QB Case Keenum, HOU (1 Viewer)

As far as impact on the team goes, I'd wager Keenum is the biggest upgrade any team has made this offseason. He's worth at least 4 wins by himself for Denver. They had BY FAR the worst QB play in the NFL last year.

In fantasy, he'll certainly help Thomas and Sanders, but he's likely a mid to low-end backup himself.

Actually probably true

Lunch Special: Should the Broncos pass on QB

I’m glad you’re back from vacation. (9NEWS reporter Mike) Klis has been an over-the-top salesman on everything Broncos. Seems like (Case) Keenum is a hall of famer and Vance (Joseph) should be given a lifetime contract. Uggggg.

Kiz: Does Case Keenum rhyme with rebuilding? Keenum is what he is. A capable NFL back-up that played very good football for one season, with the support of a very solid Minnesota Vikings defense. Could Keenum get the Broncos to the playoffs? Absolutely. Keenum is a bust if he fails to do anything less than ride the coattails of Von Miller to the postseason. But to know what the Broncos really think of Keenum, all you have to do is follow the money. It’s a 2-year deal. Keenum isn’t the long-term answer. He’s a bridge. Question is: A  bridge to where? To Paxton Lynch? To a QB selected in the the draft? To the next time that John Elway has to pull a veteran QB out of his … scouting reports on free agents?

There is a misperception about Keenum being a so-called bridge QB.

A bridge would be someone like McCown or even Tyrod Taylor...you know what their ceiling is.

Keenum's floor is well above 2017's Broncos QB crew...but Elway believes Keenum also still has upside potential (mostly consistency and decision-making) that can throw for 4K-plus yards and get them back to the Super Bowl.

Lynch has even more physical talent but not enough reps for Elway and Kubiak to definitively conclude whether he is the next Jake Locker...or Jared Goff. Releasing him to take on another QB project would be premature.

Keenum is either a bridge to an improved version of himself or to Lynch...the Broncos won't be drafting a QB at #5. This year, at least.

I agree mostly but Lynch is burnt toast.

Well a two year contract does say he is a bridge....if baker mayfield is available at 5 they are taking him....

Possibly but in some ways it would have been crazy to give him more than 2 years even if they believe in him, based on his career.  And no other team was going to offer much more than that so why give a longer contract then they have to.

How are people feeling about Case in Denver? In a 2 QB league and thinking about trying to trade for him as a second QB (QB's are hoarded so pickings are a bit slim).  Seems like he has decent weapons, could have pretty good season, but also a little concerning Minny didn't seem too interested in bringing him back.

After watching Eli Manning's inept performance in last night's match vs. Eagles, I wouldn't be surprised if Giants' GM Gettleman / HC Shurmur would at least make a phone call to Broncos GM Elway to inquire the trade availability of Keenum.  It's obvious that Broncos don't know how to cater to his strengths (i.e. more play-action).  Hopefully, Elway would listen and relent to whatever their trade offer and start swagging with Chad Kelly.

The Giants are not good. No way they trade for a guy like Keenum. They're going to to get a high pick in next year's draft and take their QB then. Why ruin that?

Case Keenum completed 25-of-41 passes for 322 yards, two touchdowns and an interception in the Broncos' 23-20, Week 6 loss to the Rams.

It was Keenum's second-straight 300-yard game, though he hardly looked good doing it. A huge chunk of Keenum's yards came on a pair of underthrown deep balls to Demaryius Thomas and Courtland Sutton. Keenum's arm appeared limited all afternoon. Keenum briefly checked out at the end of the first half as he was evaluated for a concussion, but he thankfully cleared. With just eight total touchdowns through six games, Keenum is barely staying on the QB2 radar. He gets the Cardinals on Thursday Night Football for Week 7.

Oct 14 - 7:35 PM

Coach Vance Joseph remains committed to Case Keenum as the Broncos' starting quarterback.

"Case is our quarterback," Joseph said after yet another Broncos loss on Sunday. Keenum was checked for a concussion at the end of the first half, and sophomore Chad Kelly came into a standing ovation from Broncos fans to kneel it out on the final play of the second quarter. Kelly was also tremendous in the preseason. Keenum hasn't been the worst of the Broncos' problems, but his play also leaves the rest of the team zero margin for error since he's simply unable to deliver anything more than mediocre quarterbacking. There haven't been more than a couple worse starting quarterbacks in the league through six weeks. Keenum is tied for the league lead with eight interceptions, and only Josh Allen and Marcus Mariota have worse passer ratings.

Case Keenum completed 14-of-21 passes for 161 yards, one touchdown and an interception in the Broncos' 45-10, Week 7 win over the Cardinals.

Keenum added four carries for four yards. They're disappointing numbers considering the lopsided nature of the score, though five Cardinals turnovers kept setting the Broncos up with gorgeous field position, limiting Keenum's yardage opportunities. The Broncos' defense also housed a pair of pick sixes. Lastly, Emmanuel Sanders threw a 28-yard touchdown on a trick play. Keenum has been barely playable in two-quarterback leagues this season, but he will be a top-18 option against the Chiefs' barely-there defense in Week 8.

Oct 18 - 11:56 PM

Rotoworld take:

Redskins acquired QB Case Keenum and a 2020 seventh-round pick from the Broncos in exchange for a 2020 sixth-round pick.

For his troubles, Keenum is getting a $500,000 "restructure bonus" on top of his $7 million salary. To facilitate a trade, the Broncos have agreed to pay half of that. Keenum has agreed to waive the non-guaranteed $10.5 million he had been owed. It is probably the best Keenum and the Broncos could have hoped for. As for the Redskins, Keenum is an improvement on Colt McCoy but not much else. It's a decidedly modest Alex Smith fallback plan. Keenum predictably crash landed last season after his magical 2017 with the Vikings. It is going to be a long year in Washington.

Keenum has had some sneaky fantasy value the last couple of years.

Gruden's passing offense has consistently put up good numbers and Keenum could be quite productive there.

You could have a worse option as a bye week filler.

Especially if your league rewards turnovers and incompletions.

Washington Post's Rick Snider said Case Keenum "looks like the front-runner" to start.

Keenum is still running ahead of first-round rookie Dwayne Haskins, and the veteran may end up getting the first looks during the regular season. However, the next two preseason games could definitely change that prediction. Haskins has some work to do to make up ground, but he's likely a strong preseason game away from moving ahead of Keenum. It sounds like Colt McCoy, who has missed time with injuries, is the third-string quarterback.

Case Keenum completed 26-of-37 passes for 221 yards and two touchdowns in Washington's Week 2 loss to the Cowboys.

His box score may be respectable, but Keenum struggled immensely to make reads against pressure, even missing rookie Terry McLaurin running wide open downfield before taking a hit and launching a shallow incompletion between the hash marks. Keenum has held up well as a back-end starter through two weeks (56-of-82 for 601 yards and five scores) given the circumstances, but it's only a matter of time until No. 15 overall pick Dwayne Haskins takes over as long as the Redskins continue to falter. Keenum's a tough pill to swallow even in 2-QB leagues against Chicago's swarming defense in Week 3.

How long before we think WASH makes the switch?  Looking to pick up a QB for my QB's week 6 bye, and the matchup against MIA is juicy. Next week's also looks good, against the Jints, since my QB will be playing NE.

This is a tough one. He's my main quarterback in my main league right now since Ben went down and I don't carry a back-up. I grabbed Jones and Rudolph, thinking of grabbing Darnold off of the wire. I think Keenum is a lot better than FBG or Roto have him and he's pretty good when it comes to advanced stats. High completion rate, etc.

It's fascinating, I was in the Stadium watching him play the Jets last season and he really looked terrible, missed Sanders on a wide-open throw to get the Broncos back in the game. But in 2017 he obviously did fine for the Vikes.

Currently Football Outsiders have him as their #5 QB for the season, behind only Mahomes, Prescott, Jackson and Brady (I should have drafted Lamar in EVERY league, not every league but the main one I care about lol).  Their stats have him as 231 Defense-adjusted Yards Above Replacement (Prescott is at 395, Aaron Rodgers is at 39).

I just dropped Cam Newton for him.  I still think Newton can be excellent if he's really healthy, but knowing the demands of the NFL, that could be a while coming this year, and at 0-2 with a good team except at QB, I can't wait.

But everyone else knows better and Keenum has a reputation for being a back-up so he must be bad. Seriously, don't ever bend to narrative. Let your eyes and stats guide you.

That said, massive caveat. Haskins is likely to start at some point. At what point? Who knows. But arguing for Keenum might be like hollering into a cave that mutes all vocal chord ululations. Best to not plan a lineup around him and think very carefully in how you deploy him.

Chicago will be tough tomorrow. I have him going over Jones and Rudolph. :football:

Case Keenum completed 30-of-43 passes for 331 yards, two touchdowns, and three interceptions in the Redskins' 31-15, Week 3 loss to the Bears Monday night.

Keenum also fumbled three times, losing two of them, and absorbed four sacks. He was harassed all night by the tenacious Bears' front, but Keenum committed some truly comical turnovers. His first pick was returned for a touchdown by Ha Ha Clinton-Dix before HHCD later got him again with another INT. Kyle Fuller also picked one off. Keenum's second lost fumble was one of the single most-boneheaded plays we've ever witnessed. On 4th-and-1 at the Chicago 15-yard line with the Redskins rallying down 28-15 with less than 10 minutes to play, Keenum kept it and jumped over the top of the offensive line and stretched the ball out like he was scoring a touchdown only to have it knocked away with relative ease. Just a truly dumb decision. Redskins fans booed him all night. Dwayne Haskins or Colt McCoy should replace Keenum sooner than later.

I think Skins should make changes all around..Dump Gruden, bring Haskins in for Keenum, and start Thompson at RB. Their offense would be more versatile.

I want him this week when Allen plays NE.  NE Defense #1 in the league so far.
It's either him or Jones again this week. What Jameis did to the NYG secondary was something to behold.

Keenum might not be an average league starter, but he'll put up decent fantasy points again this week if he doesn't get pulled.

Again, if he doesn't get pulled...

It's a fairly safe bet that while Colt McCoy is unavailable, and Jay Gruden is coaching the Redskins, that Keenum will not get pulled for Haskins. Colt is Gruden's guy, and was winning the qb battle in camp when he got hurt. Gruden is very much aware of how much is riding on the outcome of this Season in terms of his coaching future. Just as Adrian Peterson is not 'his guy' that fits his offense, and is unfortunately  getting his playing time manipulated, Haskins is not Gruden's guy either, and he will not put him out there any time soon, because Gruden (IMO correctly) doesn't feel Haskins is ready to win games. Wins and losses matter very much to Jay this year, despite  that the Team's ineptitude may not make it look that way. He's intent on riding or dying with 'his guys', so, if he gets fired, he can at least say he went down swinging.

That being said, you will have legit cause to be concerned about Keenum's playing time the very second that Colt McCoy is activated to the Roster, because Jay will have him back under center the minute Keenum blows something, if it looks like Colt is good to go.

Awesome. Thanks for that information.

Keenum is an inconsistent QB in real NFL play--throwing back breaking INTS when you can least afford them. But he is a pretty good fantasy QB--in my league he is QB10 right now.  WA is playing from behind a lot and having to throw the ball. He has a few good receivers although getting Reed back would help. As long as he is the starter, he is a decent fantasy play.

THis week he has a good matchup with the Giants and week 6 at the Dolphins, if you are playing the matchup.

Exactly why I'm holding on to him. NYG and MIA. I'll sit him NE Wk 5 for Jones or Minshew, dependent on feel.

Me too. I just hope he last through week 6. A win this week for WA would help and is definitely possible against Giants.
I think nittanylion's post above was instructive. I also got the feel, during the MNF telecast, that as long as Gruden was there, no Haskins. If Gruden gets the pink slip after the NYG game, then bets are off.

If they fire Gruden it's because he refused to put Haskins in - the interim HC will have no choice.
