QB Jameis Winston, NYG (5 Viewers)

Winston's comments regarding this being his first off-season without playing baseball are legitimate. Assuming he is going to be completely dedicated to football from here forward it's possible he can smooth out his mechanics if baseball isn't interfering with his motion.

The flaws most scouts see in his game, longish release and sinking of the hips, are direct results of the mechanics you have to use to be a power pitcher.

I felt like he showed some improvement there at the combine, but we'll see if he reverts to those habits once the games start.
He also sets his feet too wide at times forcing him to drift left and lose leg power. His arm is strong enough to allow him get away with it a lot.

I even saw his front foot lift off the ground sometimes. Very baseball-like. Mainly, there was a lot of extraneous, kind of, funky-chicken knee wobbling.

Edit: Listened to Greg Cosell and Doug Farrar on Winston. Interesting.

1) Despite the combine hype about his high football IQ, both question whether he demonstrates same on the field. Question how well he actually knew the offense he was running. Saw poor decisions.

2) Both agree he has an NFL arm. But question his accuracy. So the mechanical issues are showing up in a tendency to be somewhat scatter-shot as opposed to not being able to "make the throws". Both see a tendency for his throws to sail a bit. Upper and lower body not working together.

3) Cosell sees him as a not-quick-twitch guy, and that he's a bit deliberate, but says coaching can speed him up.

It's in the NFL media's best interest, especially NFL Network and NFL.com, to pretend anyone else but Winston could go #1 overall for as long as possible.

But the pick is clearly Winston.

This. The smoke screen worked for a while, but this was clear months ago.

When the Bucs had hosted him in Tampa earlier than usual, that's when everyone knew it was a slam dunk. No Mariota visits scheduled yet...

Tampa isn't hiding their intentions. Winston would have to do something galactically stupid at this point to not be the #1 pick.

I just have a massive sinking feeling about Winston. I can't help but feel like we'll look back in 3-4 years and see that all the warning signs were there that this guy was destined to bust.

Certainly possible. Nothing you can do though. WAAAAAAY worse to pass on him and watch him win Super Bowls elsewhere.

Where I'm at now is I just want to see him succeed or fail on the field. No injuries, no off field stuff. I want to see how these various evaluations play out.

I feel cheated re: RGIII and Manziel.

edit: I do kind of feel bad for the Bucks, though. First pick and no sure fire QB. I agree you've got to go with JW, but you're looking at a longish period of futility if he misses. Not even saying an out and out bust, just a middlin' player.

And if Winston is just a middlin' player do you really call him a bust? Knowing that you had to take him because of how the league works, and that #1 was higher than his grade?

It would definitely be worse considering practically everyone has him pegged at #1. It's not like there is another guy out there that people are enamored with. Even "safe picks" like OL & DL flop sometimes. It's a crap shoot. He has a 50/50 chance of being on the team in 5 years. At least it isn't as hard for teams to recover now that the rookie cap is in. If the Glaziers miss on him they are only out 40 something mil instead of 80.

This is a no-brainer pick. Even if he flops it's the right pick.

Standards are higher for quarterbacks. You're judged by playoff success, not by longevity.

I feel the opposite. He may be the best QB prospect since Luck. 18 months ago, Bucs fans were starting to dream of Winston somehow ending up in Tampa...after just a few starts at FSU. Now we have the chance. The off the field issues are scary, but the on field prospects are exciting...we could have a starter locked up for a decade. Houston and KC didn't have that chance the last 2 years.

The smart move is to trade with the Eagles if they are interested in getting Mariota. Winston then drops like a rock and they get him cheap, even though cheap is still a disaster.

So in your mind, the Bucs are the only team that consider Winston to be worth a high pick. Huh.

First it was Jamarcus Russell, then Leftwich, now Josh Freeman? Looks like we are running out of unsuccessful black quarterbacks to compare him to.
It will get worse. Wait until we get closer to the season and you'll have someone compare him to a black running QB. It's coming. I remember the year Russell came out and someone did that on this board.
Reminds me of a Jaguars game from some time ago. One of the commentators said Leftwich would have to "make some plays with his legs" if the Jags were going to win. He obviously did no homework and assumed Byron was a runner because of... his height or something.

Rotoworld:

FSU QB Jameis Winston is Todd McShay's new No. 1 prospect.
"Based purely on his tape, he's in the same class as Aaron Rodgers, Ben Roethlisberger and Matt Ryan as the best quarterback prospects to enter the NFL outside of Andrew Luck," McShay writes. The Scouts Inc. evaluator says Winston's accuracy is exceptional when his footwork is correct and a full-time focus on football will allow Winston to nail down the details in his mechanics. USC DL Leonard Williams was previously the No. 1 ranked player on McShay's board.

Listened to Cosell on MMQB and he's very positive on Winston's understanding of the pro game and ability to make throws. However, he did talk about Winston's tendency to drop the ball to his waist as he starts his delivery, resulting in an elongated throwing motion that makes the ball take longer to get out. Sometimes this combined with his long stride it leads to high throws. Probably not fatal flaws, but you're not neccessarily going change it. Wondered if it would put extra stress on the OL, but said he's not Leftwich. Said his stride reduces his functional space, which will be more of a problem in the NFL than college.

Strengths - blitz and coverage recognition, patience in the pocket, natural anticipation thrower, feel for ball location, good sized pocket passer with a strong arm and a willingness to turn it loose. Ability to make NFL throws and made them in every game in college (Cosell watched 6 games).

Weaknesses - Inconsistency, decision making.

Fun to talk about, but I can't imagine that trade ever happening. It is Bizarro NFL lately, however.
Also poss. pre-scouting a division rival.edit: "Is there a particular side you hate getting blitzed from, Jameis?"
Maybe they want to ask him about all the other prospects? If the guy is such a football guru he could provide some good insight into fellow FSU players & opponents he faced in college.

Huh? Players and coaches change this all the time. Winston has already shown marked improvement in this area based on the combine because he is no longer playing baseball, which uses a much different delivery. Bortles changed his in a matter of 1 season and it was a similar issue.

Cosell's words, not mine.

Yup, sorry.

It would be odd, but you can't blame him really. I'd be pretty over answering all of the same BS questions again and again too.
Welcome to becoming the public face of a bilĺion-dollar media franchise.
It's due to the size of the group of family and friends he'd like in attendance.
First player in history with a lot of friends and family.

i have no issue with him not coming to the draft

it doesn't help or hurt him in any way.
The last #1 pick not to attend to the NFL Draft was Ki-Jana Carter.

Every #1 QB since it became an event in 1988 has attended the draft.

The only #1 picks who didn't attend the draft were Carter, Wilkinson, Emtman, and Maryland - one combined Pro Bowl between them..

Not attending the draft seems like a calculated move after meeting with Goodell a few weeks ago. I don't think this is solely a decision from Jameis or his camp. It sounds like it is a move initiated by the NFL.

So it's too embarrassing for Goodell to have him at the draft but a team wants him as the face of their franchise?
