QB Lamar Jackson, BAL (5 Viewers)

Maybe I missed something. I thought we were talking about what happens when he loses a step running.
There are multiple discussions and scenarios going on. Even if he loses a step running, does that mean he will stop running? Wouldn't a change to a more traditional (ie, more passing) style offense get him to throw the ball more? Some people are saying a team shouldn't sign him, others are saying he isn't worth the contract he's demanding, while others still are speculating when he won't be worth it because he won't be effective running OR passing. Not sure there is a defined, singular discussion point going on at the moment.
Gotcha.
I for one do NOT think he is worth the contract he is asking for (assuming he is asking for the Watson contract). Especially at the cost of multiple 1sts. Watson wasn't worth that either. I'm still glad my Browns did it because, why not, but that's no blue print to success.
Buy hey, you are worth what someone is willing to pay.

Maybe I missed something. I thought we were talking about what happens when he loses a step running.
He will always have above average mobility, maybe it's 15-20 yard runs in broken contains or maybe it's the ability to extend plays shifting in the pocket, or rolling outside. There are lots of scenarios where he can thrive with lesser mobility than he has now.

But there is no scenario where his mobility goes to zero forcing him to become a Bradyesque statue in the pocket.

Buy hey, you are worth what someone is willing to pay.
Wise words. I wish my wife would accept them when it comes to all the #### around the house we need to get rid of.

"It no longer matters what the Italian crystal French Bulldog statue mini fountain cost sweetie, it only matters what someone else will pay for it."

Thinks the whole house needs to go on Antiques Roadshow before we can consider selling stuff.

Wait, what were we talking about?

[Update] Lamar Jackson announces that he requested a trade from the Ravens on March 2nd. Full thread:

A letter to my Fans
I want to first thank you all for all of the love and support you consistently show towards me. All of you are amazing and I appreciate y’all so much. I want you all to know not to believe everything you read about me. Let me personally answer your questions in regards to my future plans. As of March 2nd I requested a trade from the Ravens organization for which the Ravens has not been interested in meeting my value, any and everyone that’s has met me or been around me know I love the game of football and my dream is to help a team win the super bowl. You all are great but I had to make a business decision that was best for my family and I. No matter how far I go or where my career takes me, I’ll continue to be close to my fans of Baltimore Flock nation and the entire State of Maryland. You’ll See me again

Interesting.

Can tell he's his own agent 😂 Ravens already long ago told him to go out and get something done elsewhere.

Classic example of why not to be your own agent.

Just because he requested a trade doesn’t mean he will get one. Baltimore has some thinking to do. Making Lamar ride out a one year tag means he might nurse an injury for next offseason negotiations. Good luck with that

That was my thought as well. An agent would have proofread that and cleaned it up. That letter reads as is written by someone who isn't very bright. (not saying Lamar is not, just saying that professional emails, letters, etc. always come off 100 times better when grammatically correct and whatnot)

-Get me OUT of HERE!!!

I think Jackson has clearly spoken and I pointed this out weeks ago that he no longer enjoys being in Baltimore, whatever that means.
The city, the team, whatever the environment and lifestyle, Jackson is ready to move on.

You're your own agent Lamar. Go get something done elsewhere pal 👍

Or going to refuse to work and sit this one out too?
Not sure it would play out that way. As I mentioned several pages ago, this is starting to look like the NBA where star players can demand a trade (and usually get it). If the Ravens don't trade him, he could make the situation untenable. All he has to do is what is contractually required. At this point, he doesn't have to sign the franchise tender yet, so he could skip out on everything team related for months. Then he could sign it right before the season starts and be guaranteed $32M. From there, all he had to do was practice and put forth marginal effort. Would BAL really want to start a QB not giving 100%? They could sit him all season like HOU did with Watson . . . but that would be a giant waste of money.

The Ravens have until mid-July to sign him to a long-term contract, get him to agree to the franchise deal, trade him, or remove the franchise tag and make him an UFA. Jackson could throw a wrench into the 2023 Ravens season, and depending upon what they do with him it could be a wasted season.

Smoke screens and Twitter, wouldn't believe much on there right now.
Every reporter wants to try and be the guy reporting the scoop here.

Jackson can take all summer off and see if any teams want to trade for him after the Draft and after they lock up their Top 5=10 type picks from '23, then ship out the '24 and '25 1st Rd picks. Also as I have repeatedly posted, Jackson to my knowledge can wait until 3 days prior to kickoff to sign his franchise tag, that's a lot of time to relax and discuss things with many other teams and then find a number that Baltimore isn't likely to match and that's going to be more than Watson was signed for. You have to raise the number to something unthinkable like $300M was a number I tossed out and that is on the high side but likely would make him your franchise QB and the search is over as they say.

He's been franchise tagged for less than a night, give it some time.
Fun to roll back thru this thread 15-20 pages

Ravens QB Lamar Jackson says he requested trade: Team not 'interested in meeting my value'

Excerpt:

The Ravens used the non-exclusive franchise tag on Jackson on March 7. The tender is worth $32.416 million in 2023, and they'll have until July 17 to reach a multi-year extension.

The non-exclusive nature of the tag allows Jackson, who does not employ an agent, to negotiate with other clubs. Last Thursday, the NFL sent a memo to teams warning them they are not to negotiate with a non-NFLPA-certified agent who may be contacting them on Jackson's behalf.
As Jackson sent his tweet, Ravens head coach John Harbaugh was meeting with reporters at the NFL's Annual League Meeting in Phoenix. The coach did his best to downplay the news regarding Jackson's trade request.
Harbaugh said he loves Jackson and is working under the assumption that he will be a Raven in 2023.
"I haven't seen the tweet," Harbaugh said. "It's an ongoing process. I'm following it very closely, just like everybody else is here and looking forward to a resolution. I'm excited. Thinking about Lamar (Jackson) all the time. Thinking about him as our quarterback. We're building our offense around that idea. I'm just looking forward to getting back to football and I'm confident that's going to happen."

Jackson's trade request rolls back to March 2nd when he informed the Ravens to trade him and stop wasting his time.
Think about the last 3+ weeks since that transmission was sent to the Ravens verbally or in writing.
The Ravens haven't been acting in good faith it would seem and Lamar Jackson is done holding the curtain, he's pulling it all the way back at this point.
He no longer is thinking about the Ravens' shield and so their owner has to take action at this point.
They can no longer keep playing this game of chicken which is how I would describe them at this point.
The Ravens are a proud organization since they arrived from Cleveland as the Browns and get a lot of street credit in the booths and by most fans.
That said, they have backed themselves into a corner and Lamar Jackson doesn't have to lift a finger until very late Aug/Sept 3 days before the season starts.

The Ravens should no longer be given the benefit of the doubt by the press when they release statements or have press conferences about their team right now.

The question is what happens to Josh Allen when he "loses his legs"?

When Allen "loses his legs" he will be a less effective QB. Same as Jackson. The difference is that Allen is a better passer, so his version of "less effective QB" will be better than Jackson's.
Is he? I always assumed he was because everybody loves him but IIRC he had a fairly awful completion percentage comingnip
Sure, Lamar isn’t going to lead the league in passing yards, but that doesn’t mean he is a terrible passer. Of active QB, he ranks 10th in career QB rating and 11th in YPA. IMO, in a more pass friendly offense with some better weapons, he would be just fine and his passing numbers would go up.
I tend to think his passing efficiency is directly related to his running ability.

Why is this such a tough concept for so many people?

SB22, do you think Jackson has elite weapons at his disposal?
If you put Jackson on the Miami Dolphins as an example, would Miami elevate in your mind/opinion or be right about where they are right now?
Tua is considered a Top 10 QB when he isn't in concussion protocol.

Yes, he is. I posted a bunch of metrics about it earlier in the thread.

This is not at all a unanimous take on Tua. That said...

Depends. If we assume Tua and Jackson both stay healthy, I don't think it elevates Miami. If we assume one will be healthier than the other, then the answer depends on which one.

Jackson is a top 10 QB and if you think Tua is not and you put LJ in place of Tua and you tell me there isn't a difference...

-Let's not split hairs, you were kind enough to post at the resident heretic in here. I would prefer to agree with you that not all feel that way about Tua, except...
-I'm not his biggest fan either...doesn't matter because his stats up until Miami was about 8-3, he was leading the league in many statistical categories and media were pumping him up.

I would say Tua is considered a Top 10-12 QB, Jared Goff is in that area if you want some perspective, There is a Top 5-6 pecking order but after that it's a lot more wide open.
Tua's issues are mainly his health and mind, and a weak arm, and an ability to not handle pressure well, and then there's the concussions...let's take a look at Lamar Jackson

I'm trying to push Miami over the top, I saw ESPN has them as the 3rd rated roster top to bottom in terms of overall talent, Miami is right on the cusp of something special.
I would like to see them move all in and figure out a way to ship Tua and get Jackson in here, whatever the outcome I could live with it.
Miami would have then done all they could do to try and win a title.
Most of the Miami fan base, especially in here is a 180 from my thinking on Jackson. Not viewed as a target we should be aiming at.
I wholeheartedly disagree.

Bizarre timing from Lamar. He's basically free right now to seek out a trade, which of course an agent would be a great assistance with. No need to put out a tweet, he's had about 2 weeks to do it and as far as I know has not done a thing

-I think he made a huge chess move today

He has now forced Baltimore to deal with this. He certainly has no interest in playing for that franchise tag so any thoughts of OTAs, camp, new OC, there's plenty of time between now and September, but Jackson tweeting out that he has demanded a trade means the $$$ is not the issue as much, he's done being a Baltimore Raven

You don't unwrite that Tweet, it was sent with a clear message to get him out of Baltimore and for the team to have no illusions that he is taking the field.

Lamar Jackson just blew up the Monopoly Ponzi scheme known as the NFL salary cap that has many of you brain washed into thinking those numbers have much relevence when teams are able to just take salaries and twist them into signing and roster bonuses spread out over years and years, it's meaningless when these guys sign 5 yrs/$100M, it's really 2 yrs/$45M or whatever helps both sides sleep better at night and keep the media and NFL fans scratching their heads.

The Tampa Bay Bucs were light years over the cap and then suddenly a couple strokes of the pen and they are UTC
Miami Dolphins also were in the bottom half to third at the start of free agency and then like magic they trade for Jalen Ramsey

You should b mad if your team has the money and draft capital to get Jackson assuming he would be a QB upgrade from where you are at, AND THEY DO NOTHING!!!
Jackson is an upgrade at QB vs all but a handful and maybe part of another handful but mostly he's a massive upgrade and has taken his team into the Playoffs most years.
You are not going to find that very often and the NFL Draft traditionally spits out ONLY 1 per Draft on average over about a 10 year period so you are mostly striking out.
Whereas you can change the atmosphere on your team and the entire city by bring in Lamar Jackson, what owner doesn't want that? Let's start a list...

Sorry don't agree. At all.

I don't think you are understanding that there is literally zero way that Baltimore can trade him for any kind of decent compensation until Lamar and another team have at least agreed on terms of his new contract. The ball has been in Lamar's court for two weeks now to reach an agreement on a contract with a new team. That's the first step. Once terms of a contract are in place then and only then can Baltimore discuss trade terms with that team.

So I say again there is zero reason for Lamar to be sending his sabotage timed tweet today.

This would be the opposite of Chess to me. He just let two valuable weeks of FA expire without so much as having a contract extension talks with another team. Not sure how he could have played this any more poorly.

I have no doubt that was planned to match up with Harbaugh speaking at the league meetings.

Lamr Jackson, New York Giants QB.

Come on Schoen. Get it done.
This is likely THE LAST place he would end up. The Giants just signed Jones . . . meaning they would take a $92M cap hit from trading him . . . or tying up $400M by rostering two QB.
Listen 99,
-It's not a puzzle where everything has to fit neatly,
-Jackson is a massive upgrade over QBs getting $40M a year right now

That's the take away from it, not if he fits like a glove. Of course he doesn't seem to fit the Giants because they already made a commitment that they will fully regret.
Frank is just being honest that if he could have it his way, Jackson over Jones. I don't post at him that it's never gonna happen, think Frank already knows that.

My dollar and 23 cents worth...

My sitting out comment was solely on (sitting out) negotiations.

He's his own agent. Ravens long ago told him go find a deal. Presumably he's doesn't want to work at that either.....

Lamar is a classic example why you have an agent. Almost like he doesn't understand he's free to negotiate elsewhere. Not the sharpest guy.

Exactly. If Jackson wants a trade, the onus is on him to go out and do the necessary work to arrange one with other teams.

Go find multiple competing offers to gain leverage in his negotiations with the Ravens.

The Ravens aren't going to negotiate against themselves.

Jackson is taking away their ability to match some offer assuming he gets anything close to say 4yrs/$200M, forget the guaranteed part since Jackson says it doesn't matter as much as the media made it out to be.

So a team was hesitant, now they have the green light that he wants out of there and to please come make an offer.
You and I both know and most of the fans, the Ravens can simply match.
Jackson is saying don't do that and if you do, I'm not singing or playing for you and you are only going to turn this into a nasty media circus
That's what happened today, Jackson wanted to marginalize their ability to match the money by telling them "PLEASE DON'T!" and if you do, trouble will loom.

We can argue and debate who wins that tug of war, I'll let you pull harder but I want it to be known that what I described is how I feel Jackson is handling things.
You can come back with how the Ravens still have the upper hand but it doesn't change what Jackson did or my description of it.

I look forward to your next post, I am curious how you feel the Ravens can keep him at this point. All parties and kiss and make up but it appears Jackson is moving on.
I am wanting to go along with LJ for the ride and operate under the narrative he is done in Baltimore.

Sincerely,
Rose Colored Glasses LJ Fan

You and I both know and most of the fans, the Ravens can simply match.
As brought up earlier, I think the boat has sailed on an offer sheet and match situation. Teams have already shown they aren't interested in that, and I doubt the Ravens or Lamar are interested in that either. At this point, I would guess that it's a matter of teams negotiating an appropriate contract for Lamar and then working out a trade with the Ravens.

The notion that Lamar Jackson weakened his position today by Tweeting out that he demanded a trade going back to March 2nd is PREPOSTEROUS!
He totally turned up the heat on the Ravens
Teams will certainly be circling about now
The Ravens should have known that Jackson was done keeping secrets when he tweeted out they tried to sign him to 3yrs/$130M guaranteed and he laughed at them.
Didn't that give them some sort of clue that perhaps things were not going well on the negotiation trail?
Plus they insult Jackson every time their is insinuation that things would be different if he had an agent working for him like he's too dumb to handle it himself.
Tunsil in Houston was treated fairly
How come Jackson cannot get a fair shake?

Best thing he could do is get an agent. He is not coming off well taking business personally.

He actually comes off completely clueless here "demanding a trade" several weeks after the Ravens told him go find something elsewhere.

OK, what if a team makes an offer within 48 hours of the NFL Draft which plays out over 3 days
Ravens only have 5 ays to match the offer

It's like we are looking at possible future chess moves and saying no way!

FAU and MIAMI just got int he Final Four, anything is possible and all scenarios should be discussed even when they differ from our own POV.
You all knew I was going to toss in a Canes and Owl reference this week

I think the Ravens just want fair market value at this point. We will match and then we can talk about a trade. I think they want to trade him but want what they feel is fair compensation. I think I would focus on the Colts. I think the fact they have the fourth pick is huge. But if the Ravens really wanted him it would not have gotten to this point. There could be some bad blood between Lamar and someone in the Ravens group. It's just past a point where they can kiss and make up but the Ravens want fair market value for his abilities. If I'm the Ravens this would be the hill I die on. If I'm Lamar I just want to move on and I'm okay however it gets done. Just move me.

Teams still don't appear eager to give Lamar a long-term contract heavy on guarantees while including two first round picks (even if its for 24 and 25) with the Ravens likely to match. IMO, the most likely outcome is a trade ride before or during the draft.

My sitting out comment was solely on negotiations.

He's his own agent. Ravens long ago told him go find a deal. Presumably he's doesn't want to work at that either.....

Lamar is a classic example why you have an agent. Almost like he doesn't understand he's free to negotiate elsewhere Not the sharpest guy.
According to Peter King over at PFT, there has been no talk or buzz about Lamar at the ongoing league meetings. LINK
He can assert himself as a know it all but I don't hear him breaking news all that often, mostly reports on the actions of teams days after they makes moves and it's safe for him to come out and play with the big kids. He lives as a MMQB, he's not that much on the forefront of NFL think tanks.

Old school and Old guard, won't miss him a bit whenever that day happens.

I do not think Jackson has elite weapons and I don’t think they put enough around him earlier his career either.

With that said, IMHO, the amount of weapons needed for a running QB to succeed is greater than what’s necessary for a very skilled albeit less mobile QB.

Changing teams doesn’t do anything for me because IIRC, Jackson has been unavailable for the last quarter in each of the past two seasons.

The problem with the Baltimore match scenario is I believe the Ravens would be on the hook cap wise for the huge signing bonus. I don't believe they can demand to match and trade him before eating all that cap space.

You assume they ever wanted to match which IMO is a wrong assumption.

There has never been one issue keeping a team from negotiating with Lamar and then reaching out to Baltimore to work out a trade.

Let me be clear. There is no rule that requires a team to sign Lamar, wait 5 days to match, then if Baltimore does not send two picks. That's just the Ravens protection. At any time during the last two weeks Lamar could have agreed to terms on a new contract and then that team could discuss a trade with Baltimore and no one would have to worry about Baltimore matching.

Michael Lombardi has been a great source on this stuff. He's always been a Lamar fan, his son coached him college and he was big on him coming out. He's been saying for weeks that Baltimore is sick of Lamar over his refusal to accept a new contract with them and they are ready to move on. They've been open to trading him this entire time but I'll say it for the millionth time they can't work out a viable trade until he's reached contract terms with a new teams. This is precisely why they used the non-exclusive tag on him to put the ball in his court. Furthermore Lombardi has said a few times it's standard procedure for teams in these cases to call Baltimore to work out a trade once they've reached terms on a deal for Lamar instead of seeing if Baltimore would match the offer.

Teams and Lamar have had the green light for two weeks now. Two extremely valuable weeks of FA that Lamar seems to have wasted while he had his shake weight business partner "check around" with teams. Total fiasco and it's all on Lamar and his refusal to get an agent to work through the process.

You believe he will miss the last fourth of every season moving forward or say his best years over the next 3-5 while he can still muster the strength in his legs to be effective before he turns into a shivering bowl of jello behind an OL that can't protect him? He's out of the league by 30 you think? Honestly, Cam Newton was pretty much toast when he got into his 30s if not prior. It's possible even as I try and crack some jokes in there.

Next 3 seasons, 48, sorry 51 now regular season games and you think the over under of games missed by Jackson is how many?
10-15-20? I've never seen a QB miss the entire month of Nov or Dec or both every year the last 5-6 years of their careers but maybe Jackson is just a special type of QB

I respect everyone's opinion or right to weigh in with prognostications but let's get a hard number of games he will likely miss over the next 2-3 years because that's all that should matter for a team almsot ready to compete for a Super Bowl, you get a small window to strike.

It takes a trade partner, The problem is to sign Lamar to a offer sheet knowing you are giving up 2 firsts and then giving Lamar a huge contract. Also, if you have someone that is your QB now and it does not work out then that quarterback could go Matt Ryan on you. It's tough. I think a sign and trade would be best. It's not going to be a pretty.

And that would probably cost him 100 million dollars
