QB Patrick Mahomes II, KC (1 Viewer)

Patrick Mahomes (ankle) remained a full participant for Thursday's practice.

You may not think this is news after Mahomes was "full" on Wednesday, but it means he has passed one of his biggest tests. How Mahomes bounced back on Thursday after Wednesday's session was going to tell the tale for his conference championship game health. He avoided setbacks and there now appears to be a chance he could be much closer to his normal self than initially expected against the Bengals. There, of course, remains a strong chance the Chiefs are overselling Mahomes' health to psych out Cincy, but there is zero doubt as to his AFC Championship Game status. How much he is able to freelance remains the biggest question mark.

sounds like gamesmanship to me.

No one recovers from a high ankle sprain to practice in full in 2 days. No one. I wonder what they’re defining “in full” as.

If he comes out gimpy on Sunday it should be a surprise to no one.

My biggest question is whether he can go off script, and how he’ll be able to evade pass rush. If either of those are impacted, if could be a long day for the chiefs.

I saw a post on Reddit that had Mahomes comming in from practice without any noticable limp....Sorry no link. Could probably find it in r/nfl or something...

Chiefs coach Andy Reid told reporters that Patrick Mahomes (ankle) will start in Sunday's AFC Championship against the Bengals.

He's gotten in two full practices in a row and will likely add a third to that and be off the injury report later today. There's never been much of a doubt that Mahomes would play, only doubts about how much mobility he'll have on a damaged ankle. Reid said that Mahomes is "moving around good" when asked about it today.

No way Mahomes has an actual high ankle sprain, not even a grade 1. He definitely tweaked it, but an actual sprain is unlikely IMO.

all an attempt to make him look superhuman.
I believe he has an actual high ankle sprain. Contrary to what Mr. Makey spouts, drugs are not always bad.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports Patrick Mahomes' ankle looked good in practice, but that the team is uncertain of how it will respond in-game.

Mahomes, who will play in Sunday's AFC Championship game against the Bengals, skipped out on sprints in practice and didn't go full speed in practice during the week. Mahomes logged full practices throughout the week but was clearly limited in some capacity based on Rapoport's report. There's no reason to doubt Mahomes suiting up on Sunday, but his ability to roam the field and make plays off-script could be limited. It's unlikely we fully know Mahomes' limitations until the two sides square off on Sunday night.

Patrick Mahomes (ankle) said he avoided setbacks against the Bengals.

Mahomes said he escaped with just general soreness. "Other than that, I'm in a good spot." Mahomes — who did not receive a pain-killing injection before the AFC Championship Game — appeared healthier than expected, and is once again practicing in full this week. He still won't be 100 percent healthy for the "big game," but he should be close enough to once again put the entire offense on his back as the Chiefs look to pull off the modest upset.

It was inevitable Mahomes would be MVP when he was 1st team all-pro. Its funny though, that Mahomes has been so great during this stretch, that it almost seems like he's underachieving only having 2 MVPs. This had been the best non-Manning or Brady 5 year stretch for a QB ever in my opinion, and its his 1st 5 years, its possible/likely that the best is yet to come.

It's been awhile since I've seen a QB take a team on his back like this kid has to every year. They even took away his best WR LOL, and he gets an MVP passing to Kelce and some JAGs. If not for Dee Ford lining up in the neutral zone on Brady's 3rd pic, this kid would be in his 4th SB first 5 years.

Very deserving MVP

Patrick Mahomes completed 21-of-27 passes for 182 yards and three touchdowns in the Chiefs' 38-35, Super LVII victory over the Eagles, adding six rushes for 44 additional yards.

With Kansas City trailing 24-14 at halftime, Mahomes was just 8-of-13 for 89 yards and one score. Then coach Andy Reid and the Chiefs flipped the switch and scored on every single one of their second half possessions to take home the third Super Bowl victory in franchise history. It was another mold-shattering season for the most valuable player in football, with Mahomes leading the league in yards (5,250), passing touchdowns (41) and QBR (77.6). He was otherworldly efficient, leading all quarterbacks in EPA per play — by a mile — despite the offseason loss of Tyreek Hill. Once again locked onto Travis Kelce, Mahomes improvised behind him, spending different parts of the season featuring JuJu Smith-Schuster and Jerick McKinnon as his No. 2 passing-game threat. That remains Mahomes’ only real “concern” heading into his age-28 campaign. The Chiefs have to add weapons behind 33-year-old Kelce, who is almost certainly nearing his cliff as an elite option, or at least a No. 1. The scary part for the rest of the league is, 2022 was probably as weak as Mahomes’ supporting cast will ever be.

Sat out Year 1, threw 35 passes and let that be a lesson to many about the value of learning how to be an NFL QB, he carried a clipboard.
Years 2-6...
5 Trips to the AFCC and minus a phantom offsides vs Tom Brady after a game sealing interception, these numbers would be even higher
3 Trips to the Super Bowl, again it should have been 4
2 Lombardi Trophies, 2 Super Bowl rings
But for Tom Brady-Pats in the AFCC and then Tom Brady SB55-Bucs are the only reasons Mahomes doesn't have 4 rings already.

Think about it
Mahomes is a 1st ballot Hall of Fame Quarterback right now, today.
Greatest QB I have ever seen, this one with few weapons on a bum ankle was the most impressive to me of Mahomes' achievements thus far.

Fun fact: only three QBs ever now have won multiple regular season MVP awards AND multiple Super Bowl MVP awards.

Joe Montana
Tom Brady
Patrick Mahomes

That's it, that's the list. Pretty impressive when you are on a list where the only other two people on it are Montana and Brady.

Peyton Manning says hi but yeah that is the crew you want to be in

Wait sorry maybe Peyton didn't win SB MVP twice, my bad. Still that is the 4 that have multiple MVPS and multiple Super Bowl wins.

Chiefs should flip a pick for Bradon Aiyuk...Mahones would be unstoppable
Aiyuk isnt go anywhere, he's still on his rookie contract and his 5th year will be a bargain. Earliest they'd let him go is after the 2024 season.

Can't pay him though and no first-rounder this year seems like a prime time to flip him. I think the 49ers chronically under use him (because they have so much talent). I think he is a true #1 on a great passing team like the chiefs

Wrong on all counts, but you can dream.

Patrick Mahomes said, "I wouldn't say I'm 100 percent" when asked about his ankle injury.

Yes, this is the same ankle Mahomes injured in the divisional round of the AFC playoffs against the Jaguars. Mahomes battled through two more playoff games after injuring his ankle, but despite being more than two months removed from his injury, Mahomes says it's not quite back to 100 percent. The good news is the season doesn't start for another five months, and Mahomes added he hasn't had any limitations in his offseason workouts. We'd be surprised if this is still a concern come training camp.

Interesting.

Goodberry@JoeGoodberry
He's not wrong. Last year, Mahomes was partially responsible for 21.2% of the total pressures he dealt with. That's the 7th highest percentage of all QBs.
Joe Burrow was partially responsible for 6% of the total pressures he faced. That was the 3rd lowest percentage.
(Via PFF)
Jordan Foote@footenoted
Orlando Brown Jr. on blocking for Joe Burrow:
“Now, as opposed to having to play in a lot more space with guys on my edge, guys have got to rush through me because Joe isn’t necessarily at 12-1/2 or 13 yards on certain drops. He’s going to be at 7-1/2 getting the ball out.”

How does that compare to the prior season when Mahomes still had Hill I wonder? The WR downgrade last year may have affected that pressure rating as guys not named Kelce struggled getting open on time...Maybe not, but I don't know. If so, those pressures could decline as it seems the WR corps are a tad better heading into this season.
