I also noticed at USC and this year (not sure about with the Jets) that he seems pretty laid back and not a big leader type on the field. There are certainly many ways to lead but I tend to think the QB shouldn't be the one to go sit on the bench by himself when the defense is on the field. It's a hard thing to judge from afar though, so maybe I'm incorrect.

Panthers coach Matt Rhule said Sam Darnold (shoulder) is expected to miss 4-6 weeks and will be placed on injured reserve.

An MRI earlier in the week revealed Darnold suffered a fractured scapula. His absence will put the XFL's P.J. Walker under center. With Darnold struggling prior to the injury, it's possible that Walker can play his way into the starting gig permanently. However, he'll need to show signs of improvement as he hasn't looked the part of an NFL quarterback in his brief reps at the highest level. He has one touchdown and five interceptions in his pro career. The shift to Walker, who has completed 3-of-15 pass attempts this year, should ultimately be a lateral move.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the Panthers are "operating as if Sam Darnold will be out for the season" and will give Cam Newton a chance to win the starting job in 2022.

Darnold suffered a fractured scapula a few weeks ago and was placed on injured reserve. He was expected to miss 4-6 weeks, starting in the first week of November. The team signed Newton as his replacement but it's clear that the Panthers want that to be a permanent move. Darnold has looked roughly the same as he did in New York, showing no signs of improvement with a new coaching staff and better weapons. On the other hand, Newton threw eight touchdowns and ten interceptions in his lone season with the Patriots before the team cut him. He'll need to show the level of improvement that Carolina wanted to see from Darnold to earn the starting gig next year.

It would be pretty funny if Darnold getting hurt actually helps the Panthers win more and lower that 2nd round pick going back to the Jets. That's the least he can do for the Panthers at this point.

Darnold is a "few" weeks away from getting back on the field, per Rhule, who said Cam Newton and P.J. Walker would continue splitting starter reps. Perhaps we could see a majestic Newton-Darnold-Walker three-headed QB approach in the team's last couple regular seasons games. We can't put anything past the flailing, directionless Panthers at this point. The entire Carolina offense has become one to avoid for fantasy purposes. Their quarterback situation is among the most perplexing in recent memory.

Panthers designated Sam Darnold (shoulder) to return from injured reserve. 

Coach Matt Rhule hinted at this on Monday, saying Darnold "could be a factor down the stretch." Cam Newton has not been the answer since returning and has been benched multiple times for P.J. Walker. Given the revolving door at quarterback in his absence, it is likely Darnold gets another shot at the starting gig once he is healthy enough to return.

True, the main point being though that if Cam were playing well and winning, Sam wouldn’t be seeing the field again.

Cam Newton will start Week 16 against the Bucs and "play a major role," per Rhule. Whatever that means. He hasn't at all been the answer for this ailing offense. Look for the Panthers to completely overhaul their quarterback room in the offseason.

Panthers OC Joe Nixon “doesn’t expect the offense to change” with Sam Darnold starting in Week 17 against the Saints.

“I don’t think it’ll change much. Sam has been in the system all year. We can do the same things as we did when Cam [Newton] was the starter. They both can obviously throw the football down the field and also help out in the run game.” This doesn't come as a surprise given Darnold had five rushing touchdowns in his first four games for the Panthers. Darnold completed just 47% of his passes and took four sacks in his return from a five-game absence last week, but Carolina will use the final two games to get another look at Darnold, the only quarterback they have under contract next season.

Sam Darnold completed 17-of-26 passes for 132 yards and one interception in Carolina's 18-10 Week 17 loss to the Saints.

Darnold regained his starting job just in time to be devoured by Marcus Davenport and New Orleans' demonized front-seven, eating seven sacks including a sack-fumble that Davenport recovered at Carolina's 13-yard line. A majority of the second half took place on Carolina's side of the field though the Panthers did miss an opportunity to retake the lead when Lirim Hajrullahu sailed a 47-yard field goal attempt wide right. Darnold's 5.1 yards per attempt ultimately dragged the team to their 11th loss of the year. The Panthers will take the field one last time in Tampa Bay in Week 18 before undoubtedly making changes across its organization this offseason.

I really liked Corral this year. Would prefer him in the late first with a trade up though. 

I think their defense looks very good and is quite young. I'd build on the OLine and worry about QB in 2023. Tough for coaches and GMs to do that though if their job is on the line.

Yeah, it's frustrating because he will have 5-6 really good plays/passes in most games but then dink and dunk and look scared on the other plays. You can see the possibilities but I don't think he every pulls it all together. I wonder why he looked so good at USC? Maybe simpler reads or easier defenses.

Gase had that as well - Sam and the O would look solid the 1st 15 or so plays and then completely look terrible - gotta blame the coach and the qb for not being able to adapt

Also agree that it is very tough to develop a QB if GM/coach on the hot seat - better to just end it now if even considering.

They have no 2d rd pick but a high 1st - maybe they trade down to mid teens for a QB prospect and recoup the 2d rder.

Panthers GM Scott Fitterer said Sam Darnold "will be back" for the 2022 season. 

"When we protect him," Fitterer continued, "he looks like a good NFL quarterback." Okay, champ. The reality is the Panthers do not have much of a choice with Darnold owed a guaranteed $18.8 million next season. Even so, Carolina should look long and hard at adding some competition this offseason.

Fitterer added there were no hurt feelings between the organization and Darnold after the Panthers' failed attempt to lure Deshaun Watson to the team. Wretched in 2021, Darnold seems to be the default starter for Carolina if the team doesn't acquire another QB -- Jimmy Garoppolo, perhaps -- via a trade or in the NFL Draft. Fitterer said the Panthers are "monitoring" available signal callers. No team is more down-bad at quarterback than the Panthers, whose head coach, Matt Rhule, has to have a decent 2022 to keep his job. Being forced to start Darnold could mean Rhule loses his job by midseason.

The Charlotte Observer reports "there's a strong chance" QB Sam Darnold will be the Panthers' Week 1 starter.

Panthers GM Scott Fitterer called Darnold the favorite for the quarterback job last month. The Panthers overhauled their offensive coaching staff after Darnold went 4-7 with 13 interceptions over 11 starts in an injury-shortened first season in Carolina. There's some "belief in the organization" that Darnold, who was the youngest starting quarterback in league history and is only 24, will take a step forward in 2022. After missing out on Deshaun Watson, the Panthers plan to stick with Darnold over trading for a veteran starter but haven't ruled out drafting a quarterback with the No. 6 pick.

As a Panthers fan, I'd rather them draft a QB in the first round.  Let that QB get his growing pains out this season. I'd rather see that than Sam or Jimmy behind center. Rhule possibly getting fired at the end of the season wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing.

Agreed, as a long time DJ owner I’m more concerned than ever he’s going to be one of those guys whose ceiling will be capped due to QB play. And if they go with a rookie, it will be another few years to trudge through.

Yeah I wonder if they would go for a 4th this year plus a future pick.  Carolina could do way worse at QB than Jimmy and they could be a respectable team with him at the helm given the state of the NFC south

Agreed, I'm pretty much rookie or Mayfield for any team that still could use a QB. 

Very much make or break for Rhule, I can't help but think firing Brady was a mistake too.

So you'd want a bad qb from this draft to learn a system he'll have to forget next season instead of a good one from next year when the qbs don't suck to start with a new coaching staff?  You sure you're a fan?

I've been saying this since the Jets.   I don't know if I would want Darnold to be my third string developmental guy either, he just seems broken.
