These are the only two that even came to mind to me that you could make a case for. Jordan is probably really, really close for me and I wouldn’t really argue either way.

Just looked it up because I didn't know for sure: Babe Ruth's teams also won seven championships. Two as a young starting pitcher for the Braves, then a third one with the Braves when they converted him from pitcher to outfielder mid-season. And then four more with the Yankees.

 
My favorite Brady stat: Tom Brady is number 2 all time…in receiving yards…for players over 40 years old.

1. Jerry Rice: 2,169 yards

2. Tom Brady: 6 yards

T3. Everyone else who has ever played in the NFL for all time minus Brett Favre: 0 yards

23,204. Brett Favre: -2 yards

Tom Brady announced his retirement after 22 NFL seasons. 

In a statement announcing his retirement, Brady said "it's best I leave the field of play to the next generation of dedicated and committed athletes." He thanked his Bucs teammates and said he "couldn't be happier with what we accomplished together." Brady and his agent knocked down premature reports this weekend that the all-time great QB was stepping away from the game after 22 seasons. Obviously Brady didn't want to distract from the league's championship games. While he won't leave on the high of another Super Bowl win, Brady retires after a season in which he led all passers in completions, yardage, and touchdowns -- a mind-blowing feat for a 44-year-old quarterback. Two of Brady's 40-plus touchdown seasons came in his final two years in the NFL. He finishes his career No. 1 all time in both passing yards (84,520) and touchdowns (624), reaching an incredible ten Super Bowls and winning seven -- six with the Patriots and one with Tampa. His departure likely spells the short-term end of the Bucs as Super Bowl contenders. Rob Gronkowski is unlikely to return to Tampa without Brady under center, and Chris Godwin would seemingly test the free agent waters more seriously than he would have if Brady had stayed for one more season.

I would in fact argue that Lebron should squarely be in that discussion. In fact he's the only athlete I can think of, and for sure only one who was not in a supporting cast type role, whose finals/championship game appearances were higher then Brady's SB appearances.

 
I've heard this no place but I'm going to say that while  it seems crazy due to his age unless I see him start to let himself go I will continue to believe he's not shut the door for good yet and if the right situation unfolds will consider returning after a year away.

I think he was just kind of tired of Arian's along with family dynamics at play. Maybe a year off will have everyone re-considering, including the family who wanted him home more.

James has played 2 fewer seasons and has seen a bigger drop off in his play than Brady did but he does have 10 finals appearances vs Brady's 10 superbowl appearances. James is 4-6 in the finals, Brady 7-3.

He announced he was leaving the bucs. Today is the day to talk to the bucs fans and his teammates from this year.  

He will retire from football later this year after signing a one day contract with the Patriots.  Then he will talk about his career here. That's how you are supposed to do it in these situations.  Go Brady

I don’t get the Arians hate angle. They won the Super Bowl their first year together and were a couple injuries away from another NFCCG and likely Super Bowl together. 

Brady seemed to be loving football again as a Buc. Invigorated. Arians style had a lot to do with that.

I never saw Gretzky play and don't give a rip about hockey, but seeing his stats is mind-boggling at how far ahead of everyone he is.  

IMO any "best athlete" conversation has to include Michael Phelps.

If you removed all his goals - he'd still be the NHLs all-time leading scorer just based on his assists.

Maybe but it's telling that Peyton Manning had more good things to say about the Patriots organization in his retirement speech than the guy who spent the majority of career here.

I always felt like I was playing against that middle linebacker or that safety or that defensive coach.

"I’ll miss that handshake with Tom Brady and I’ll miss the plane rides after a big win with 53 teammates standing in the aisles, laughing and celebrating during the whole flight. I’ll miss playing in front of so many great fans both at home and on the road. I’ll even miss the Patriots fans in Foxborough, and they should miss me because they sure did get a lot of wins off of me.

 
I would suggest that anyone who is hurt or upset that Brady didn't mention Boston or the Patriots in his initial statement today needs to get a grip.  He helped get your city/team six championships.  Shut it, thank him for being a big part of those six rings, and get over yourself.

No one even close? With all due respect, Bobby Orr was as great or greater than Gretzky (imho) so the no one close isn't going to fly with me; carry on.

Agree 100% But I think it is much more the radio and tv talking heads and their vocal minority pia followers pushing this crap. Yeah maybe the types of people who regularly waste hours trying to call into a talk show have a hair across their ####; however for the vast majority he is  a god who can do know wrong. Seems like an intentional slight to BB & Kraft org and if that is how he feels that's fine with me.

We should start a separate thread and set the criteria but ftr, Orr distant 2nd? There has never been a greater hockey player than Orr, maybe as good, but none better and this not even close stuff is a bit nauseating.

We are all entitled to our own opinions and trying to belittle me for mine in this case is a bad idea. Gretzky was great, so was Orr.

You likely didn't get to see Orr like I did and it was a different era; people have different criteria(greatest scorer, sure Gretzky), I get that. Like Red, I don't have a beef with you if you like Gretzky, but like Red I think Orr is the best (or at least as good) as ANYONE I have ever seen. My primary beef is with those who claim Orr is a "distant" second to Gretzky which is a bunch of horse karapp imho.

We can agree to disagree.  For me, Gretzky is the distant 1 and then Mario, Orr and Howe fill out the hockey Mt Rushmore, and I am not sure anyone is close to displacing any of them.  I will leave it at that.

 Criteria might matter. It might also introduce a few new names. 

 
This should go to the FFA forum but don't forget Gordie Howe played 6 seasons in the WHA competing with the NHL. He had another 174 goals and 508 points there. Plus, he didn't need a 3rd liner to play with him to protect him. 

Anyways, that Tom Brady is pretty good, huh!
