QB Trevor Lawrence, JAX (1 Viewer)

Yeah, I spent big on running backs and WR, and picked up Purdy for a reasonable amount and paired him with T Law for cheap. I hope to have two top 10 QBs if things work out well.
Who's your pick this week? Asking for a friend.
Who’s my pick?
Purdy or Lawrence?
Oh sorry. At some point in this thread I think I was discussing Lawrence as a Superflex option as that was where my head was at.

I have them in Superflex, so I choose them both! But if I had to roll one, I think I’d roll Purdy week 1.

I have TLaw in over Purdy rn. But I chase upside and I think this game could be lowkey shootout.

How does T Law have more upside than Purdy? Purdy has had much higher ceiling games, specifically last year, and that was without CMC at times.

Is it because the over under? Panthers defense projected to be bad? Lawrence projected to do better this year? Seahawks defense on the road is no slouch?

Yea^ to all. Plus lack of prep time with sf receivers. Travis Hunter and BTJ are stronger receiver tandem imo.

QBs are super close in ranks, but I think bad D/ better matchup is the main rationale for me.

Also I am bullish on Liam Coen as OC. Maybe I’m ahead of myself.

My Lawrence over Purdy decision had similar rationale. Plus I am starting Purdy in another league so I don’t completely lose out if he has a big game.

No more excuses this season, added Coen and Hunter, BTj is a stud. Will be interesting to see if TLaw finally delivers on all that hype. Carolina is a pretty easy start to the season to get the motor revving...

Was very tempted in some of the leagues to start him but ended up starting Stroud, Caleb and Fields instead, I just couldn't do it not until he can prove it.

He's got a ton of weapons and a great coach but I don't see a natural passer when I watch Trevor Lawrence. His throwing motion seems odd to me, a little awkward like he's shot-putting the ball or something, and there's a lack of fluidity or dexterity in his movements - he's heavy footed and heavy handed, maybe not a superior athlete like many of his QB peers? I don't know, I could be wrong, but it was enough for me to avoid Lawrence everywhere thus far. I think he's a decent QB2 in superflex but that's it.

Currently have Lawrence in over Mayfield but struggling on it. Vegas has the JAX and TB point totals almost exactly even.
Wow. I don’t have Mayfield but would gladly slot him in over Lawrence if I could. Wouldn’t even hesitate.

Yep. I made a huge mistake there.

I see the flashes of superior QB play in Lawrence and they can be extended at times, but overall he just can’t seem to maintain that level of play. I was hoping he’d get past that plateau of inconsistency that he seems to be stuck on and CAR’s D was a perfect kickoff for that.

I’ll continue to hold him in dynasty - he’s a solid backup FF QB. I held Mayfield since drafting him as a rookie for the same reason - he showed some seriously superior skills early on and now he’s finally upped his game to bring that level of play consistently. But I won’t make the same mistake I did this week until Lawrence proves he can do it as a regular base of his game.

Answering four questions following the Jaguars' dismal 31-27 loss to Cincinnati Bengals

Ryan O'Halloran
Jacksonville Florida Times-Union

How bad of a loss was this for the Jaguars?

Answer: This game was a giveaway. Point blank. Period.

Teams who are supposed to be good aren’t supposed to lose to a back-up quarterback (Jake Browning).

The Jaguars had the game in their hands just about all the way through — they didn’t trail until 18 seconds remaining.

What happen on Lawrence’s two first-half interceptions and why couldn’t they line up right in the first half?

Answer: Let’s start with Lawrence. The Jaguars only stopped themselves in the first half, rolling up 267 yards, but leading only 17-10.

Lawrence’s first interception, on the Jaguars’ second drive, came when he threw off his back foot after left tackle Walker Little was dusted by Bengals edge rusher Trey Hendrickson.

Lawrence’s second interception, on an over-the-middle throw, happened in part because Thomas made a business decision and didn’t extend his arms to either catch it or at least break it up. Bad look.

But on the final drive of the first half, an inexcusable error by Lawrence. On third-and-10 from Bengals’ 22, he crossed the line of scrimmage — and by a couple of yards — negating a defensive penalty in the end zone. The Jaguars settled for a field goal. Lawrence should know better.

As for the penalties, the Jaguars were called for four illegal shift flags in the second quarter alone. All were declined by Cincinnati, but that is troublesome for the Jaguars. Trouble hearing snap count or pre-snap shifts? Needs to be fixed.

After the game, coach Liam Coen said the staff will have to examine if there was too much in the game plan to combat the crowd noise and Hendrickson, forcing the errors.

This guy is never going to be elite….
Thought there was a time he was going to be.
What is holding him back?
His lack of talent?

He’s like the generic version of Danny Dimes.

All kidding aside I once started a text war on our group chat defending the generational talent. I was wrong.

I’ve never liked his “it’s just a game” vibe. He’s not a baller. He’s not a leader. He’s just a dude. He could care less either way. Shouldn’t be in the NFL with his attitude.

Just feeling the need to pop in here and admit defeat. I was wrong on Lawrence, at least for where my individual expectations were. Some of the problems this year aren't even the same problems he's had in the past. And with the level of talent I was ascribing him (not generational, the bar was never that high for me, which kind of makes it even more frustrating at this point), he should be better than he is this season with Coen, with BTJ, with a vastly improved line (compared to what it's been in past years), with a solid rushing game, and a defense that was kept them in games and left him in a position to secure wins for his team. And he just hasn't done it. Something is up with BTJ for sure. But at this point I just can't reasonable make excuses for Lawrence anymore and it's hard to believe there is another level of potential for him in what feels like the best situation he's had yet in his career.

I guess the upside is while I do have high ownership of him, it was mostly all low cost investments made over the past year or two when his value was outside QB1 range. Just still feels bad to be so off on this one. At this point it's hard not to believe the Jags couldn't swap Daniel Jones in there and find more success which is pretty pathetic.

I admire you for taking your lumps, but this isn't done yet. It doesn't look good, and I just checked to see what his history is. So it's not really a beacon of light towards greatness, but you never know. Damn, I want to be positive but I'm having a hard time. We will see if this is really who he is or if this gets turned around.

The Lawrence situation is starting to remind me of those old school Christmas tree lights where if one bulb was burned out, none of them lit up. It's a long and tedious process to find the culprit but it's starting to look like he may be the "bad bulb".

I was in desperate need of a QB in 2021 when I used one of two 1st-rounders on Lawrence. :kicksrock:
I didn't have a 2nd but traded back in to select Zach Wilson as well.
Luckily I also traded for Hurts earlier that offseason. :pickle:

He did not play bad last week, his supporting cast let him down.
Exactly. While not great, his receivers (talking to you BTJ) have dropped a ton of balls.
They have also admitted they are still learning the playbook. Which, honestly, is inexcusable at this juncture.
Not unexpected though, right? How much have these guys played together? It's not just knowing the playbook, but knowing each other.

September football in the NFL is the new pre-season.

It's certainly the organization itself as the "bad bulb".

Christening anybody into the league with Urban Meyer would scar them. As we've often seen, take Darnold with the Jets as another example, it's just near impossible for a QB to succeed when you're switching coaches and coordinators and schemes out literally every season.

I've often wondered as I've gotten older how many Brady's/Manning's/Mahome's we've missed out on because the crappy organization that took them at the top of the draft is (shocker) actually crappy and doesn't know how to set a young QB up for success.

That kind of organization vs examples like Mahomes or Rodgers who sat back and developed their guy and built a suitable roster around them before throwing them into the fire, almost like they had an actual plan to set him up for success.

Yeah I'm not cutting him in dynasty or anything, but it will definitely effect the way I draft this upcoming year. And I probably should have listened to others more last offseason and taken a swing at a QB from the 2024 class. I didn't have a shot at Williams or Daniels, but I certainly could have scooped Nix who I did like. I just felt solid with Burrow, Love, TLaw, and a couple more years of Rodgers to pass over QBs for other guys I liked (took Ladd and Pearsall with two picks I had prior to Nix going off the board). Mistake in hindsight. Hope to have an opportunity to grab one from this upcoming class.

Sucks that the JAX offense now has to deal with Shane Waldron. Poor BTJ and Hunter as well.

Ouch.
How does this guy get jobs?
I wondered the same and tried to read on it. Best answer I could come up with is he's a very nice and likable guy. I get it, shouldn't be prioritized over actually being good at your job lol. But it is noted several times by players and coaches of multiple organizations. And I can only imagine people in power want to lean towards hiring guys who will follow orders and not rock the boat. Especially if they don't see themselves as a "players coach", maybe they like Waldron to balance that out and be the so-called "mom" in a coach/player parental dynamic.

They tore up the Panthers on the ground and moved the ball well. I expected him to go off against the Bengals and he kind of did. If his WRs catch a couple of those he has a monster day. Houston's defense is tough and the Jaguars got the win. Tampa didn't really take off offensively until week 4 last year either.

If they can clean up the drops he'll be a stud.

I think there is an institutional comfort under the guise of "professionalism" and its not limited to football in sports or even sports as a whole.

Its a hire that won't get you fired but is not going to lift you.
