Naperville Trails 1/2 Marathon Race Report
The weather was as advertised this morning. High 50s to low 60s. Near ideal conditions and far and away the best for any of the half marathons I've run. It was windy but the course is through a forest preserve about 1/3 of which is in the woods, so the wind wasn't that bad. I was well rested so, all things considered, I thought I have a great chance of breaking my PR of 1:31:18 and even getting under 1:30. I was shooting for 6:50 miles...
Mile 1: 6:32. I decided to wear my heart monitor this time. However, I didn't realize it was as loose as it was! I fidgeted with it for a while but then it slid down to my stomach. I took it off and tossed in under a tree to go back and get later. Oh well!
Mile 2: 6:29. I was going way too fast and was having trouble settling into a pace.
Mile 3: 6:45
Mile 4: 6:42
Mile 5: 6:48
Mile 6: 6:51
Mile 7: 6:54 I started struggling a little here. I got a side stitch for 1/4 mile or so that impacted things.
Mile 8: 6:49
Mile 9: 6:42
Mile 10: 6:45 Around here I was feeling pretty decent. Tiring, of course, but for the miles left and with the time I had banked, I knew I would get my goal. That peace of mind really helped me relax and just see if I could keep the pace.
Mile 11: 6:47
Mile 12: 6:40
Mile 13: 6:43
last .06 :22 (my Garmin was measuring slightly long. Maybe it was the angles I took.)
Overall finish 1:27:46. Overall, 13th out of 600. 2nd out of 63 in my AG (large AG! And the guy who was first won the whole thing!) I also beat all the women.
I've very pleased with the time, of course. A 3:08 marathon and a 1:27ish half have certainly blown away my expectations going into 2012. A nice confidence builder for the Chicago Marthon although I don't think my endurance is where it was this spring.
ImpressiveI dont know how you guys can hold a pace like that for so many miles.
The HR was very close to earlier 5Ks that were in tougher conditions, so it probably gets back to the training. Anyway, nice to run near the front, and the race director gave a "wow" after announcing my time..something that wouldn't happen in the big CARA races. I'll try again next week at a race right in my neighborhood ...see if this one helped get my legs back under me.
Plus you still beat Sand by 0:02
On my ignore list you go.Congrats on a killer race. You demolished it!
on the run (1st). Overall 10:33:51.
All 4 of us from the thread finished!!!! Wraith got me by around 10 minutes, as predicted, by destroying the bike leg in insane winds. I had nothing for them and he blew by me at the 19 mile mark of the ride. No PR for me, missed it by less than 2-minutes, but ran the 1/2 at the end over 20 minutes faster than my first HIM. I'll get to a RR when I get a chance. MUCH more fun than my first HIM, made even better having so many friends racing too.
It was disappointing to have to toss it but it's too hard to adjust the strap on the fly! This was the first time I've run without it in about a month.
At least you tried. 1:27 is awesome man.

. Once we were done, I took Mrs. SC to the Madonna concert. Tickets said show started at 8 p.m. Knowing they never start on time, we arrived about 8:30-8:45. Madonna didn't start until 10:30.
Show ended a bit after 12:30 and I was shot. Took train back to brother in laws and arrived there by 1:15 and in bed by about 1:30 a.m.
and HFS, your ride back to town was ####### amazing. 5 mile split at 24 MPH!??!?!?!?!? ####. While the three climbs were tough, it was the wind that cooked me. The middle climb was into the teeth of the wind. For the record, I shed my Clyde bias and cheered wildly when Wraith was called up to the podium. Damn cool to see a guy a roped into this sport grabbing hardware.
And you got that right RE: last 10K. Philly's course sets you up for a strong final 10K if you manage the first 20 correctly. There's some hills between 18-20 that are just enough to hurt ya for that final 10K if you aren't careful. If you come out of Manyunk feeling strong, its a flat/fast finish.
