Naperville Trails 1/2 Marathon Race Report

The weather was as advertised this morning. High 50s to low 60s. Near ideal conditions and far and away the best for any of the half marathons I've run. It was windy but the course is through a forest preserve about 1/3 of which is in the woods, so the wind wasn't that bad. I was well rested so, all things considered, I thought I have a great chance of breaking my PR of 1:31:18 and even getting under 1:30. I was shooting for 6:50 miles...

Mile 1: 6:32. I decided to wear my heart monitor this time. However, I didn't realize it was as loose as it was! I fidgeted with it for a while but then it slid down to my stomach. I took it off and tossed in under a tree to go back and get later. Oh well!

Mile 2: 6:29. I was going way too fast and was having trouble settling into a pace.

Mile 3: 6:45

Mile 4: 6:42

Mile 5: 6:48

Mile 6: 6:51

Mile 7: 6:54 I started struggling a little here. I got a side stitch for 1/4 mile or so that impacted things.

Mile 8: 6:49

Mile 9: 6:42

Mile 10: 6:45 Around here I was feeling pretty decent. Tiring, of course, but for the miles left and with the time I had banked, I knew I would get my goal. That peace of mind really helped me relax and just see if I could keep the pace.

Mile 11: 6:47

Mile 12: 6:40

Mile 13: 6:43

last .06 :22 (my Garmin was measuring slightly long. Maybe it was the angles I took.)

Overall finish 1:27:46. Overall, 13th out of 600. 2nd out of 63 in my AG (large AG! And the guy who was first won the whole thing!) I also beat all the women.

I've very pleased with the time, of course. A 3:08 marathon and a 1:27ish half have certainly blown away my expectations going into 2012. A nice confidence builder for the Chicago Marthon although I don't think my endurance is where it was this spring.
:excited: ImpressiveI dont know how you guys can hold a pace like that for so many miles. :tebow:

Chase the Bear Glenview 5K

20:27 (6:35/mi)

Avg HR: 173

1st in 55-59 AG (out of ..5)

This was a small, local 5K (we had to stay on sidewalks for much of the last mile). But overall, a nice little event. My daughter enjoys coming along, so it was fun to have her with me.

mile 1: 6:28 ..HR 163

mile 2: 6:42 ..HR 175

mile 3: 6:37 ..HR 180

last .1: 6;25 .HR 183

I knew right away I did not have my high gear as I didn't Sand the start and could tell the legs weren't reaching very well or turning quite quickly enough. Too many distance runs and not enough hard speed work lately? Just tired from a busy summer? -ptts- The HR was very close to earlier 5Ks that were in tougher conditions, so it probably gets back to the training. Anyway, nice to run near the front, and the race director gave a "wow" after announcing my time..something that wouldn't happen in the big CARA races. I'll try again next week at a race right in my neighborhood ...see if this one helped get my legs back under me.
90% of us here would be thrilled to have an good day like that much less an off day. Congrats.
THIS. :goodposting: Plus you still beat Sand by 0:02 :hophead:

Funny, thinking that this morning. Ran a 5k for time since the suckex was an incredible 114. My new quest as of late has been to try to break 27:00. First time ever I had a sub 9 min pace but nowhere close to sub 27. To think these guys can finish, grab a drink, towel off and come back and get me on a 5k kinda blows me mind.

Finished up week 8 of Pfitz 18/70 yesterday. I'm glad to get this nutty week behind me.

Tue (10mi recovery 6/4 double) - 73/73 and super muggy. I toyed with the idea of actually doing the 2nd run, but work and kids was just way too busy. So I only ran the 6. My legs felt horrible. I almost quit at mile 2. Then by mile 4 they loosened up and felt amazing. Really weird. 10:08/130

Wed (14mi MLR) - 77/73 at 4AM. Crazy humid. I didn't want to run at all, but slugged through it. Had more HR creep than usual. 9:34/143

Thur (5mi recovery) - 77/67. A little less humid, but still gross. For whatever reason, I felt really fresh. HR was low. Single lowest HR I've ever recorded on a run. 9:59/127

Fri (11 w/ 6LT) - 66/66 and foggy. Like yesterday, my HR was a good amount lower than usual. I didn't really get into the meat of LT range (I should be around 175 and not break 178) until the 3rd LT mile. I felt amazing and had a lot left in the tank. Could've easily made this the 12/7. Splits: 7:34/161, 7:25/168, 7:22/170, 7:29/173, 7:30/175, 7:25/175 AVG = 7:28/170

Sat (6mi recovery) - Had to bag the run. #### hit the fan right out of the gate with work and then I was on kid duty while the wife was on a girls night out. :sadbanana:

Sun (20mi LR) - I finally got out at 7AM and was a wreck. 3hrs of sleep, my mind all over the place thinking about work and having a 20 miler to get through. Thank god the weather finally broke - gorgeous 66/57. My HR was up at the beginning and I never really settled down. Couldn't stop obsessing about work. Legs tightened up pretty good at mile 18, but I was able to keep pace. HR was too high for my taste, but still solid compared to the 155+ I used to run these things in. Ended up at 9:20/147. Another successful 20. Doing it in back to back weeks is really encouraging.

56mi for the week, which is silly when I feel like it was an off week.

Hey, guys. Didn't get back from Ironman until late last night, so I'll be catching up here this morning. All of my friends did great down there, including one who won her age group (F45-49) by going 1:16:08 in the swim (24th in her AG), 7:14:02 on the bike (4th), and 3:16  on the run (1st). Overall 10:33:51.

As always, crazy inspiring. I'd still love to get comfortable in the water so I could mess around with the tri stuff, but I think that this particular brand of crazy is beyond me.

You're gonna need to unpack that a bit GB ;)
I thought he summed things up perfectly. :football: All 4 of us from the thread finished!!!! Wraith got me by around 10 minutes, as predicted, by destroying the bike leg in insane winds. I had nothing for them and he blew by me at the 19 mile mark of the ride. No PR for me, missed it by less than 2-minutes, but ran the 1/2 at the end over 20 minutes faster than my first HIM. I'll get to a RR when I get a chance. MUCH more fun than my first HIM, made even better having so many friends racing too.

beer 302 - Congrats on the distance PR!

sho nuff - 3-hour, 18-mile run, and a 50-mile week? Awesome!

prosopis - Nice work on the 11-miler! How's your eye?

BNB - Speaking of "crazy".... :loco:

Sand - 3rd place? Congrats!!

furley - Nice job on the 5K. Did you make it out to Bubolz??

medal monger - Congrats on the AG win!

Jux - Way to go!!! I'm hoping to get my half PR down into the 85 range. We'll have to run one together!

Ned - Another solid, solid training week!

And for me, rest day yesterday (not really with all the running around I did in Madison), but I did have a really solid 20-miler on Saturday morning. One of those days when I felt really crappy at first, but then I loosened up and felt great.

Started slow on purpose (9:32 for the first mile, 8:30/mile first ten) and then picked it up. Averaged 7:52 the rest of the way, going 7:49 or faster each of the last six miles with the fastest being Mile 20 at 7:27.

Back to the grind today with an easy 10 after work.

Yeah, maybe late spring next year after Boston. Or maybe even early spring -- I don't yet know if I want to incorporate a half into Boston training. We could probably convince some other local FBGs to join us.

I just got done reading a recap of yesterday's race. I don't have a lot of perspective with regard to the other disciplines, but some of those run times coming off the bike are ridiculous.

OK, that's freaky. We really are on the same wavelength.
:hophead: Green Bay is a possibility.

Awesome stuff! I'm not sure what is crazier. Running a 3:16 marathon after all that running and biking. Or the idea of spending 7 freakin hours on a bike. Seriously?

Saturday - woke up at 5 and by 7:30 was on a train to New York City for a draft. At bar by 11:30 with beer in hand. Draft lasted until about 5:30. I was buzzed pretty good by drinking all day. Headed to my brother in laws for dinner and a few more :banned: . Once we were done, I took Mrs. SC to the Madonna concert. Tickets said show started at 8 p.m. Knowing they never start on time, we arrived about 8:30-8:45. Madonna didn't start until 10:30. Show ended a bit after 12:30 and I was shot. Took train back to brother in laws and arrived there by 1:15 and in bed by about 1:30 a.m.

Sunday - awoke up at 6. Dragged my hungover, tired butt out of bed and was running in Central Park by 6:45. It was a long run day so I wanted to make the best of it. I intentionally went slow so I didn't crash and burn. I ended up doing 16.34 miles at 9:10 pace. Central Park is great because there is so much eye candy to look at. I was doing well with my run until at about 16 miles I stopped at a water fountain to get a drink and when I was done, I straightened up and was really dizzy. That was my sign to stop soon, so I cruised back over to the Upper West Side and walked back. Hence the 16.34.

My heel issues are much better (although I wear shoes in my house now). I think I am dealing with some minor Achilles issues. Whether that was the source of the heel pain or a result of adjusting my stride due to the heel pain, I'm not sure. I'm just managing it and in general, it seems like it is getting better.

Sand - 3rd place? Congrats!!
Thanks! I guess 3/460 will do for an end to the tri season.----

Super huge congrats to the HIM finishers - Wraith, 2Y, Dexter, and Spina. You guys rule. Kinda bummed it looks like I won't be able to come up for Iceman.

And Jux for an insane HM time. Jeez, man.

Oh, and :lmao: Ned. Nice 55 mile week, too!

As for Me v. Wraith, smart money is on Wraith. Dude has been downright religious to his HIM training plan, whereas, I am not sure I am fully recovered from the Survival Tri a few weeks back... I am really trying to stay goal-less for this event. But, I hope to come up with a HIM PR (and hope Wraith doesn't have to wait to long for me at the finish).

Congrats on the podium. They say bike for show and run for dough, but it looks like the bike was decisive. How ugly was the bike course?

wraith. 2Y2BB -- Nice job guys. Sounds like you a had a good time.

SteelCurtain -- 16 miles on almost no sleep and probably still a little drunk from earlier in the morning? Yech. Congrats on getting through it.

_________________________

Pretty lousy interval session earlier this morning -- 10 miles with 4 x 1200. Wind gusts of up to 30 mph certainly didn't help, but honestly my legs were just not responding today for whatever reason, so this would have sucked even if it had been perfectly still and 20 degrees cooler. I could only average a 7:15/mi pace on the intervals, which is poor for me since I'm hoping to do a sub-22 5K later in the fall. I'm also feeling a little sorer than I should be from this, but I guess that part shouldn't be surprising as I get to the end of this training cycle.

For those calling me crazy, here's my pre-lim run thru at weekly mileages of the next 30 weeks. Comment/suggestions welcome.

cycle 1 - 22, 34, 30, 34, 40, 38, 32, 42 (Shut-In week) - slow build to 40 mile week level

cycle 2 - 40, 53, 64, 33, 65 (Table Rock week) - build to 50-60 mile week

cycle 3 - 40, 55, 47, 32, 67 (Tsali Double week) - step back / maintenence cycle

cycle 4 - 40, 51, 64, 42, 31, 67 (Black Mt. Marathon week) - endurance cycle

cycle 5 - 36, 71, 78, 35, 27, 111 (Umstead week) - final build and taper

Seems relatively manageable given the weekly numbers many of you are posting.

Already see some things that need massaging.

For those calling me crazy,
Yeah, GB. We're not calling you crazy. We've accepted that you're crazy. :P -----Just as a general note. Today at lunch it was 77/50. Ran 5 miles at 8:20/mile. Heart didn't explode. Finished with a kick. Smiled as I finished. Did not have soaked shoes for the first time in forever.Every year I seem to forget that running can be fun. Like really awesome.

Legs responded well for a 7 mile recovery with some strides today.

Saturday's rain and front cooled it off nice here.

Did not get out til 9:45...and while it was about 71...really low humidity and a breeze made it feel great.

Was easy keeping the HR under 140 except on a few hills.

Even paced it at about 10:30 which is what my long GA runs have hovered towards and my HR would climb into the high 140s.

First few miles I was probably going more in the 10:15 range as there was more downhill.

Strides got me going well too today and were not a big struggle.

Really surprised at the lack of any real soreness after a 50 mile week and an 18 miler.

Don't think I will be as lucky this week though.

I know virtually nothing about training for that kind of race but I'm really surprised this kind of mileage would be enough.

:jawdrop: and HFS, your ride back to town was ####### amazing. 5 mile split at 24 MPH!??!?!?!?!? ####. While the three climbs were tough, it was the wind that cooked me. The middle climb was into the teeth of the wind. For the record, I shed my Clyde bias and cheered wildly when Wraith was called up to the podium. Damn cool to see a guy a roped into this sport grabbing hardware.

2Young, Wraith, Dexter, Turkish Harem - You guys are men among boys. Amazing job.

Jux - Great half! Nice and consistent pacing throughout.

Ned - Seriously? You are getting Grue like in this training. You are gonna smash 4 hours at Philly like its nothing. No doubt in my mind.

My update -- I did an easy recovery run today. 2.77 miles. 9:59 pace and average HR of 119. It was nice and easy after my 16+ miles yesterday.

All true stories. Wraith waltzes into Michigan and snags hardware with a solid swim and a killer bike segment through some serious wind. 2Y was his usual beastly self, just slightly less beastly than Wraith on that given day. Having done the course with them gives me enormous respect for their numbers and accomplishment. They are also excellent people to enjoy bourbon with afterwards! :banned: I hit most of my goals, though they were relatively modest compared to the above performances. More training would have made the experience more enjoyable and the goals more aggressive, but I am glad that I sacked up and did it. Having 2Y, Wraith, and Dexter there was awesome.

Nice job!!! I know how tough those events are - I've finished two, and DNF'ed two others. So getting through it is a real testament to your physical training and mental toughness. Congrats, JS!

It was a great weekend with 2Young, Dexter and T.H. Loved racing & hanging out with those guys!!
Congrats on the podium. They say bike for show and run for dough, but it looks like the bike was decisive. How ugly was the bike course?
Thanx GB. Three big, long climbs - 1/2 IM bike course

You HIM guys are inspirational. Seriously. The thought of running a HM after swimming/biking for ~4hrs :loco: :X Carry those medals proud.

Proof that your head is certainly not right coming off the bike, I put my running sunglasses propped on my forehead while leaving mike bike glasses on and ran out of T2 with 2 pair of sunglasses on. I realized I'd left my bike glasses when I went to drop my running glasses down. :bag:

just wanted to drop in and congratulate the HIM'ers out there. Told them on FB, but what an accomplishment for you guys.

Bourbon Chase in three weekends for me....Been trying to run as much as I can. Not sure if I am ready for it, but away we go anyway.

That's OK. I had a good laugh a couple of weeks ago when one of my friends told me how she accidentally ran a half-mile wearing her bike helmet during a brick workout.... :lmao:

Ned - Seriously? You are getting Grue like in this training. You are gonna smash 4 hours at Philly like its nothing. No doubt in my mind.
Agreed. Ned = serious sandbagger.
 nah. Just have a lot of respect for 26.2 and what can happen. I'd be lying if I didn't feel the same way about 4:00, but I never in a million years saw 18/70 going this well.
Do me favor and on one of your training runs that requires MP for a stretch to try to do 8 minute miles (3:30 MP) and see how it feels. THEN make your decision about whether you'll run Philly with me at the 3:30 pace.

Looking at your training, HR, etc, I seriously think that 3:30 is in your realm. That being said, I completely understand that races aren't won and lost in the first 10-15 miles. Its probably the last 10K.

I ran out of T2 with my helmet still on. The crowd was there for me and let me know... otherwise I probably would have been a good mile or so out before I realized.

I have a 16/12 MP run this Sunday, so we'll see. Maybe I'll let the HR be my guide for the first portion of the MP and then go for 8:00 on the last couple to see. That should be a good test since it'll wrap up a 67mi week. And you got that right RE: last 10K. Philly's course sets you up for a strong final 10K if you manage the first 20 correctly. There's some hills between 18-20 that are just enough to hurt ya for that final 10K if you aren't careful. If you come out of Manyunk feeling strong, its a flat/fast finish.

You need to respect it, but you have trained enough to have confidence in what you are capable of. #### happens sometimes that don't allow you to make a goal (if you are Grue, it happens more than sometimes), but it doesn't mean that the goal was wrong.

:lmao: At the end of one of our days during RAGBRAI, one of our teammates walked into Culver's (fast food restaurant), ordered his food, and sat down with his helmet on. We noticed while he was ordering, but were too busy laughing to be able to tell him. ________________________________

My update:

Elliptical feels too good. I got in 70 minutes yesterday, and have zero residual pain today. If I weren't missing race day adrenaline, I'd can running for good right now. Not going to happen.

Over the weekend I got in a hard 22 mile bike ride, with the winds well over 20+ MPH. I fought hard for the first 19, to go 20+ MPH, but lost it on mile 20 getting my HR up to 180+. I shut down the goal, and treated the last mile short stretch as a cooldown.

Sunday I did P90x chest and back (= the first of the 5 lifting workouts). I somehow PR'd on 21 of 24 lifts/pushups; two of them tied PR's; and the other (freaking second round of diamond pushups) was well below a PR. This workout was after tailgating all day for the A&M/FL game (my caloric intake had to be record breaking), and getting just a couple hours of sleep due to extracurricular activity. This was by far my best P90 workout I've ever had. I truly feel in the best shape I've been in, in over 20 years right now :boxing: .

Nice job on C&B - that's hardcore! Out of curiosity, how many total push-ups are you doing for that workout? I want to give Dexter some much deserved credit on the HIM - brother doesn't get to train much because he travels CONSTANTLY supporting our men & women in uniform. He still showed up, put it all out there, and finished 70.3. I think most people in his position wouldn't have had the guts to start, let alone finish. But he did, and I'm very proud to have run the race with him.
