Ran a 10k in June (12 Viewers)

Holy cow, what a weekend!

ghost ..son of Bass ..IK ..Mrs. IK ..pizzatyme ..FUBAR ..MAC -- way to go everybody! So cool to read all that.

Weekend highlight for me was at my university's graduation ceremonies yesterday. My daughter graduated with a masters degree in social work (gerontology). Because of my dual status as staff/faculty, our president allowed my to step in for her and hand my daughter her diploma on stage (and get a huge hug, too, generating a nice crowd reaction).
Seriously, what a weekend around here. I'm glad everyone is compensating for my lack of running due to the week away and coming home to a sick daughter.

Congrats to all!

Damn fine work goin on in here fellas.

Awesome job fubar, pizza, ghost and anybody else I might have missed.

Good luck annyong. I hope you place in your AAG (asian age group).

Good luck anybody else.

Also, trail >>>>>>>>>>> road
:goodposting: , although I'd add a few more >
Agree although the last few weeks have been crushing me. I run with a group on Saturdays and on occasion lead the 6-8 mile slow run. It's no-drop format so we stop at trail intersections and make sure no one gets lost frolicking in the woods. It's a great run and gets a lot of folks out on the trails who typically wouldn't go for fear of getting lost. Anyhow, that past few weeks I've had some speedier folk in the group recouping from injury and had to run at close to race pace for me. Yesterday I had a guy that wanted to go between 8-10 so there is a pretty easy 10 mile route we do that I started on. Two of the other guys in the group typically run with the fast group but missed their start time so we all went out together. Just about kilt me but it was a solid run. Next week is going to be a LR at my pace, #### em if they want to frolic fast ;)

Ned- Building back up nicely I see. How does this fit in with your archery pursuit? Anymore recent news on that front?
Outdoor season has started, but no major tournaments until late summer. Logging a lot of late night training sessions in my basement (short yardage shooting at 10yds and under is like a batter in the batting cages - all about fundamentals). Been studying a lot on the mental aspect of winning. I've learned a lot about myself and am shooting very well these days. The 3rd in NJ states has been a good stepping stone in my mental game. The reason I'm diving back into running so hard is because of my wife. She told me there's no reason we couldn't juggle the running and archery. Who was I to argue? it helps that our oldest is very into archery after winning NJ states.

I'd strongly encourage anyone doing anything competitive to read 'With Winning In Mind' by Larry Bassham. The power of visualization is very real.

I used my 9 miler today to try and find a goal pace for my half next Sat. Last fall I ran my first and only HM in 1:50:40 (8:26 pace)

After today I'm thinking an 8ish min/mi pace, which is a lot faster than I originally planned. What do you guys think?

Congrats to all the racers this weekend, what a representation from the ffa.

Found myself in a predicament this morning, out of town for work and woke up in my hotel with no car keys or running shoes, left them at a friend's house and she was unable to drive them to me so I could get my run on. I said f it figured I'd try out running barefoot. 3 miles on sidewalks and city streets and it wasn't as bad as I was expecting. Didn't step on any glass or needles or anything but man that pavement was on fire (about 90 degrees outside).

Do any of you currently or in the past do the barefoot thing? Is there a surface I should be looking to run on or do you just run on sidewalks/streets/paved trails and your feet eventually toughen up and get used to it? I would kinda like to do a barefoot half as part of my 12 halves in 12 months this year. Anyone ever heard of a half marathon tailored to barefoot running?

Annyong - I think under 8:00 should be the A goal (you can always adjust if necessary). That's a hilly course though, right?

I absolutely wrecked my half. My previous PR was 1:43:02. My new PR is 1:41:09.

This our town's local marathon / half-marathon. I've run the half a bunch of times and have the course completely memorized. Very good conditions for the 7:00 am start -- about 40 with light winds (8-10 mph depending on which forecasting site you believed). The HM course is pretty sheltered so that level of wind is negligible. It was also overcast the whole way, which was nice. I ended up running almost the entire course with half a dozen 20-somethings (three M, three F), some of whom knew each other. One guy pulled away from all of us around mile 10, and I pulled away from the rest about a mile later. Technically one was doing the full, so we lost her at the split between miles 10 and 11.

I came into this planning the beloved 5/5/5 approach, so I'll break out my splits that way.

Miles 1-5: 7:38, 7:38, 7:49, 7:33, 7:41. I went out "fast but comfortable." Several years ago I managed to break myself of the habit of starting too conservative and then finishing with a bunch of gas sloshing around in the tank. Covering 13.1 miles is a non-issue, like it's a non-factor for most of you guys, so I want to make sure I'm racing, not just running. Mile 3 was a little slow in part because it features a small amount of off-road running and a couple of choke points. You can see that I pushed a little on mile 4 to make up that time. Honestly, I knew somewhere between miles 3 and 4 that I was going to crush my PR.

Miles 6-10: 7:43, 7:38, 7:42, 7:43, 7:47. At the halfway mark, I was on pace for 1:40:30. I knew it was extremely unlikely that I would be able to maintain that pace, and I'm okay with a mild positive split. The slower splits here are a combination of me pushing up against my lactate threshold and a deliberate decision to back off very slightly. Mile 10 is an outlier, featuring a very steep hill. It's only 0.2 from bottom to top, but it's a tough incline and also hard to descend safely. Every year I willingly give up some time on this rather than attacking it and leaving myself depleted for the final stretch. In other words, that 7:47 is completely fine, normal, and acceptable for that particular mile.

Last 5K: 7:35 (dropping the hammer), 7:41 (picking the hammer back up), 7:41. Last 0.19 (Garmin): 7:20 pace. In my training leading up to this race, I had been doing my long tempo runs at about a 7:35 pace. I tried to pick up the pace during this last stretch, but it just wasn't there. If I can run 13.1 miles at this pace, obviously my "true" LT pace is probably a little faster than I thought it was, but there's no question that spending this long at or near my LT threshold was holding me back at this point. Not fading, but no real capacity to mount a surge either. I would have had to slow down if this had been a 15 mile race instead of a 13.1 mile race.

Official results: 1:41:09, 7:43 pace (7:40 Garmin pace)

26/355 overall

3/19 M 40-44. I actually got credit for 2nd in my AG because the first place guy was 3rd overall and 1st in Masters.

This particular result may end up being a lifetime best since I'm not getting any younger, but sub-1:40 is only 69 seconds away. Long endurance isn't the issue -- I'm pretty sure LT is my binding constraint at this distance now. Gotta give it a shot though, either this fall or next spring.

Mrs. K ran this morning as well. Her 1:51:xx was good for 3rd in her AG. (She also benefited from faster runners not being able to double-dip in the AG results; she was really 5th but we always take AG awards however we can come by them).
Congrats Ivan. I really enjoyed this report. Very interesting how you break up your half. You need to do one of those events with your wife where the ladies get a head start.

FUBAR - Looks like you're primed for IM training. I know you're a brick guy, but stay focused on that run training. It will carry over to your bike. Congrats on the huge pr.

Based on this, I think sub-8:00 might actually be a little on the conservative side. You did this run faster than that at something less than 100% (race) effort, and it's only four more miles. Then again, I don't know how you handle hills.

You can always just go out at 8:00 for the first few miles and take it from there. If you're feeling good at the halfway point, pick it up.

Sand, how is the new HR watch working for you? I see TomTom jumped on that train...might have to ask for another Christmas present this year ;)

Looks like a solid review. Might be an early birthday present to me.

Speaking of gifts; just got my 6" x 36" roller!
Ugh, I'm so close to preordering the runner cardio.

The lowest I've seen my rHR was 49; mHR is 196. All this chatter makes me want to experiment with HRR.
I went ahead and pre-ordered the runner cardio. Can't wait to ditch this buggy motoactv and the chest strap!
Get us a review!
It's due here on 6/3. I'll be sure to review it after I take it for a few spins.
I don't know how, but Amazon sent me an email saying it was ready early and has shipped. I'll have it this afternoon. :excited:

Hoping to dial up the mileage a bit this week, good start nailing my 8 mile interval this morning. Try to run 4 miles between 5-10k pace (something under 9 minute miles) & 4 recovery miles under 10. Ran this last week and managed the fast intervals ok but missed on the recoveries. Today:

9:26 - 8:18

9:39 - 8:44

9:51 - 8:39

9:49 - 8:43

Felt pretty good after but makes for a long morning

So yeah, my 5k...

Well, the bad news I didn't break 19 or even PR but the good news is that I did win the entire race. :bowtie:

Was a terrible week of training and honestly, I was feeling a bit burnout with racing in general. If this race wasn't started by a friend of mine, I might have bailed. BUT I knew with the odd start time (1PM on Sunday) and hot weather (80+) I would be very competitive overall. So lets get it on.

Settle in at the start line and look around...yeah, I'm winning this thing. I don't know if there's more pressure or less when you know that you're going to win a race without even bringing an A+ effort. I sorta felt compelled to give it my all though because it's my friends race and better times make the race look more legit.

Mile 1 - I take off with a pretty decent tail wind and it's basically me and a bunch of kids sprinting like hell for the first 800 meters or so. I stay relaxed and watch them blow up one by one...so adorable. At the end of mile I have a huge lead - 5:48

Mile 2 - The mental struggle starts...I know I can't lose the race but I could break 19. So I do my best to keep it moving but at the turn around I feel that wind that was pushing right in my face. I slow down big time. - 6:25 (18 minutes is too far off now I tell myself)

Mile 3 - WTF am I doing?? My body is telling me to ease up...you've won the race. I try and fight the urge and pick it up a bit. - 6:16

.1 - I can see the clock and it says 18:??...I step on the gas but it's too late - .33 seconds (5:38 pace)

I lost focus and came in at 19:03...1 second slower that 2 weeks ago. I'm pretty confident that I could have broke 19 yesterday but I don't think I'm a great front runner. I really could have used someone to push me yesterday but the 2nd place was buddy of my and he finished in 20:27. Oh well, hard to be too bummed with my first race win. Got some hardware and $50 gift card to ****'s. That's $100 in gift cards in 2 weeks from races.

1/167 overall w/ 6:08 pace.

You know, despite the vomit inducing pacing, you really can clean up at the shorter races. My last 7 5k's and 1 6k dating back to 2011 I've finished 1st in my age group 6 times and 2nd twice.

All-American Marathon (FIRST year)

As mentioned, this is the first year of this race, so there were some kinks to work out IMO. Overall it was a very well run event, but minor things like only providing 80 free beers and an underwhelming post-race food court (they only had oranges, trail mix, bananas, honey buns and water) need to improve next year. I don't mind mixing half runners and full, but they need to separate the runners by time better. Some of the people in front of me at the start were practically walking, which creates logjams.

One bonus - Meb was there, signed autographs at the pre-race meal and spoke post-race. Not the best public speaker, but seems like a good dude.

Intentionally did not bring the HR monitor as it got distracting in my last full (March) and I just wanted to run by feel. I wanted to use the yellow-orange-red plan, first 10 miles being easy-ish, next 10 pushing but not overly hard, then let it go on the backend. Not sure I quite did that, but I like my pacing.

First 10 miles - maintained a steady 7:29 pace, fastest mile being 7:21, slowest 7:46, mostly in the 7:20s.

Okay start, but it wasn't in corals, so running around slow people sucks. Around mile 8, they had volunteers lining the road with American flags which fit the theme very well. We got onto Fort Bragg at this point and off the major highway at mile 10 when the half runners turn right, the full runners turn left.

Feeling pretty good through 10.

Miles 10-20 - maintained a steady 7:49 pace, with only mile 20 being over 8. Fastest mile were a couple in the mid 7:30s. Feeling really good about the PE pacing. I started passing quite a few people at this point who probably didn't know how to run a marathon. Weather was still great.

Miles 20-end - a bit slower here, at 8:21. two slow miles uphill at 8:39 (22) and 9:16 (24), but the rest were 7:59-8:08.

Mile 24 was the worst hill of the race, but we knew that going in. My plan all along was to power walk it, which I did while staying with the guy in front of me who was jogging up the hill. Walking here enabled me to run right past him at the top of the hill and had enough energy left to feel decent the rest of the way. Felt better than I probably should have over the last half mile, which I ran at a 7:35 pace.

I think I've mentioned it before, but I don't run many races so I'm still learning proper pacing. But I think this was my best paced marathon of the ~10 I've done over the past 12 years. All but two miles were between 7:21-8:08. I'm sure I haven't reached my potential as while I did train for the marathon, I cross trained more for the IM than focused on the run. Most of my running over the past 4 months has been on trail except the weekly long run which I did on the road.

Overall 3:28 47/810, 7/104 in my age group.

Thats what I'm worried about. I train on almost no hills. Not a lot of them in my immediate area. Here is a crappy screen cap from the race site. Is this a "hilly" course?

Nope. Just throttle it back a little going down into those little valleys on miles 3 & 6 and you'll be fine. ~40' climbs aren't much to worry about.

Not New Orleans flat, but pretty darn flat. Those little dips are pretty minor and you'll probably like them as they add a bit of variety to the run.

FUBAR - that sounds beastly! Final time?
mentioned it earlier, but 3:28
I'm senile, I guess. That is one heck of a time.

I've got a quarter sized burn blister forming on my foot after my impulsive barefoot run yesterday. Any tips on how to treat/heal it as quickly and painlessly as possible? Probably screwed up my running schedule for the week.

Leave it alone unless you really have to be on it. let it air out as much as possible and quit doing stupid #### like running barefoot

Thanks for all the kind words everyone! It's nice to feel a part of the community here.

By the way, the One America Indy Mini Marathon is absolutely a first class event.

We went to the Convention Center Friday night to get our badges and they had about 100 vendors in there selling and giving away running gear and supplies. That was pretty neat in itself.

Then Saturday morning I was a part of over 30,000+ participants. 30,000!

To me, being from Indy, the coolest part was going around the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. I've been there for several races, but to get to walk it you experience how massive it is. Plus I got to kiss the yard of bricks at the finish line like so many drivers have done after winning the Indy 500 previously. That was special!

There were over 30 bands and cheerleading groups along the route playing music and keeping everyone pumped.

One of my favorite memories is all of the people out there cheering everyone on. I had my son's name on my shirt and I bet I heard his name shouted 500 times. That was awesome!

Anyway, I encourage you all to come and do it! By the way, if you're interested in next year's event, they have an earlybird discount that ends tomorrow May 5th. Entry is $55 (normally $75). Just google One America Indy Mini Marathon for details.
I am thinking about signing up for next year. My wife ran/walked it a few years ago. I am just starting to run and I look at it as a great goal for which to train. I have never been a serious runner, other than when I was in the military and my First Sergeant was awfully serious about me running. I think I am going to do a 5K this summer and a 10K in the fall. If both of those go well then I will run the Indy Mini.

Love the stationary bike at the YMCA.

Recovery ride, hr under 100, supposedly 10 miles in 22 minutes. That can't be right but I wish it were.
