Ran a 10k in June (7 Viewers)

I likey me some Accelerade (currently orange flavor).

floppo, can I borrow the (PTT) shirt? Man, fall gets busy for me. I got in a couple of pretty solid 6 mile runs this week, incorporating some hard pacing. Away to Des Moines this weekend (Parent's Weekend). I'll run about 7 miles on Saturday, exploring a different part of the marathon route, then when I get back on Sunday I need to squeeze in my long run. Gruecd's got me thinking, but I expect to target 20 miles.

Looking forward to the weekend reports!

Once the race photos are available, I'll have to make sure I give you guys a link to the pics for bib #2266, the lycra hottie!
Not as hot from the front as she was from behind, but still not bad.You can actually see me running behind her in this one. I'm the guy wearing the blue singlet and black shorts.

And here is one of me. Don't feel bad; I'd rather look at the girl, too.

It's all your's, good buddy!gruecd got me thinking too- I'll stick to the 20m as scheduled and not add the 2m. (miles... not meters/metres- for the roarinsnoring inclined).

yummy. If it get's better from the back, no wonder your race went to hell...And it's funny- I'm used to seeing tri-photos, where every single one of the running segment looks like we're all walking- you guys look like you were flying.

Maybe if I shave my head I could be as fast as you are. You are streamlined.

i'm running out of places to jog here fellas.

all the same paths/routes are boring the hell outta me. i find runs are a lot easier when i jog new places.

I bought some Orange Accelerade at lunch to try
Where'd you find that? :moneybag: All I can find is Fruit Punch :pickle: , Citrus Grapefruit :ok:, Mountain Berry :good:, and Peach Mango :ok:. I even asked the Accelerade dude at the Expo at my last race, and he said those were the only flavors currently in the stores. :lmao:
Local bike shop. But, it can be found much cheaper online at Nashbar and a few other sites.

All kinds of tri/biking/running websites (I use Nashbar) carry the Accelerade powders... but I'm sure you knew that.
Nah, not quite addicted to the point where I soak up every website. Just enough to be dangerous. :D

Run them in the opposite direction (e.g. counter-clockwise if you've been running them clockwise to this point, etc), run backwards (literally), run naked, or run with your eyes closed.

Today I'll do my first bike ride since my calf injury. I'm going to ride from our house to my daughter's (age 5) soccer practice (with her on her Barbie bike!), and will then try to get a very slow 15 miles in during her practice. On Monday, I'll start strength training on my calf, and will hopefully start running in the next couple of weeks. Baby steps.

Drive your car to a park or green space away from your normal surroundings, or to the nearest University = New scenery (of all kinds) tends to help!I would not recommend that you do either naked or with your eyes shut though.

Well, I did it....signed up for a 5k that will take place tomorrow morning. Thought about signing up for about two weeks, but wanted to see how my body felt before I committed.

Anyone know where I can pick up a mobile oxygen unit?

i'm running out of places women to jog play with here fellas.

all the same paths/routes woman are is boring the hell outta me. i find runs "those activities" are a lot easier when i jog do it in new places.
furley, I recognize the cryptic cry for help from a newly-married man. I feel your pain. Heading to a nearby campus, naked, is probably the correct response here. HTH

  Create your own: Exhale firmly, and you'll force an effective and instinctive inhale.

Just do what I do, when I am bored with my regular paths. Drive down to the beach and run alongside the ocean. Lots of wimmenfolk there. Plus it is harder to run on the beach, at least it is for me.

 it's like you said what i was thinking :bag:
...hopefully you mean just the running-naked-through-campus part. Of course, this all comes from a guy who almost got kicked out of college for streaking through the heart of campus at 10:00 am one winter day a few decades ago. My face was covered, but I suspect several ladies still recognized me.

You're in WI. You can't be more than 4 miles from a Lake

Can I have the shirt when you are through with it? I came down with the flu yesterday and am in the midst of trying to rehydrate and keep food down. Fever broke and I am feeling better, but weak as heck. Lucky for me, tomorrow is that adventrue race with starts and stops and I can even ride the people mover, so I am not worried, much, other than barfing along the way would be a bit embarrasing. Trying to see the bright side, I am carrying less weight, down to about 156ish.

lake <> oceanin fact i'm about 1 mile from the Bay. only it's not developed at all. suppose i could run through the waste treatment facility that's on the waterfront.. that might be tresspassing though.

Ran 2 miles yesterday on 1 days rest. Scored a 21:20 which was 2 seconds slower than the previous run, but thats fine by me. It was a little humid but cooler and cloudy. What was better was my ending heart rate was down to a 168 from 180, and after 10 minutes was down to 120 compared to 138 the previous run.

I'll keep doing 2 miles at a clip for a few more weeks then bump it to 2.5 depending on how I feel. Gotta pick back up in the liquid intake, as it has been averaging about 70 over the past 4 days. 11 days in with average caloric intake of 1779 per day, with a net of 1560 per day subtracting exercise. This does not include normal basal caloric usage at all.

Starting night shifts tonight, but will get a run in tomorrow evening before work. Weather looks nice for the weekend.

And as would have it, my timing couldn't have been better. I get a call over the lunch hour that my dad and brother have extra tickets for the Husker game tomorrow. But, being 3 hrs away there's no way to do both. :lmao:

******Race Report******

I ran the South Daytona 5K this morning. I finished in 25 minutes flat. 18 seconds better then my previous PB.

I finished 46th out of 160 overall, and 2nd of 7 in age group 40-44. :goodposting: :lmao: :pickle: :pickle: :pickle: :pickle: :pickle: :pickle: :pickle: :pickle:

I won my first award today.

This me with the award after the race.

SteveUK also placed 2nd in his age group (45-49), again.

Me running to the finish.

I hope everyone else had as good a running experience as I did today.

Hey, Darrin, congrats on the PR and your first age-group award! Well done! :X

Personally, I find myself feeling closer and closer to 100%. I did an easy 7 miles yesterday afternoon at 8:01 pace, and then I got back out this morning for another 5 miles at 7:41 pace (and felt very good doing it). I think the stars are starting to align for next weekend's TC10!

Corgrats Darrin & Steve - Hardware = FUN.Here is another Race report: I’m going to Vegas….. Baby!!!! Team Bad IS Beautiful (which included me) won the inaugural Motor City Scramble. What an awesome “race”. We ended up running somewhere between 6 and 9 miles if I had to guess and being a runner was a HUGE advantage as we needed to cover a lot of ground. Also have to do things like direct my running partner through a puzzle blindfolded, played guitar hero, did a soduku, Motown trivia, an obstacle course at the YMCA, have 4 tourists do the YMCA at a spa, gather clues at the Michigan Sport Hall of Fame, paper airplanes, etc, etc all in three hours and change of the allotted four hours. It was an absolute blast. Oh, forgot, there was also a photo scavenger hunt. This is where t got interesting. My buddy’s camera failed near the end so we didn’t get this bonus task. However we were only one of two teams to do all the tasks. Lucky for us, the other team blew one of the tasks giving us the victory as we finished first.

Hopefully, they’ll have photos out soon on the web so I can share. If one of these comes around your areas, I would highly recommend it. We’ll definitely be back to defend our crown next year. The flight part of the trip doesn’t kick in until next year, so we may hang on to it and do the ½ marathon there in the later part of next year.

As fun, was the after party at the Hard Rock. We were by far the oldest competitors out there, but the kids we competed against were very cool to hang out with. AND, The City of Detroit is an awesome place to visit and the people of the city were great today.

ETA Steve in to the Congrats, thought I got it the first time!

finished in 29.09, but am disappointed in my finish....had to run the last mile into a 35mph headwind, which really took it out of me...

like furley, I ended up behind a youngin...I think she was 13-14 as she was the only runner in the Under 14 age group. I make myself feel better since she is the daughter of one of the few marathon runners in the area...she finished about half a block in front of me...tried to catch her, but just didn't have enough left at the end.

I've always ran at nighttime (around 9pm), so taking on a morning run was somewhat a concern. It wasn't as bad as I thought, but I'm completely drained right now.

That's great Darrin and Steve!
Thanks Dash. What's amazing is that these are the first awards I've ever won for running. I ran for about 3-4 years when I was in England - stopped there in about 1996. 10 years later and I am MUCH slower but picking up age awards. I'm hoping at some stage next year to be running closer to my PR's of my 30's - though maybe that is unrealistic. :deadhorse:

Thanks. I just realized that I didn't give much of a race report. The temp at race time was about 75, but there was a nice breeze. I felt real good this morning and I was hoping to have a good race. My first plan was to start slower than the llast race. When I crossed the 1 mile mark one of the volunteers said 7:47, twenty seconds slower than the 4 miler two weeks ago. I tried to run the second mile at about the same pace, and I passed Steve at about the 1.5 miles. When I crossed the two mile mark the volunteer said that I was at 15:51, so the second mile was run at 8:06, which is slower than I wanted, but I was still 9 seconds ahead of my goal time. In between 2 and 3 miles I caught up to another runner and when I went to pass him he sped up and was pacing me for a bit. With about a half mile to go he looked over and thanked me for setting a pace. I thanked him back and then he sped up a bit. I was actually able to speed up and catch him again for a bit, but he beat me by a couple of seconds. You can see him slightly ahead of me in this video. After the end of the race I tried to speed up and sprint in, but the video shows that I wasn't really going that fast. Man, I thought I was flying.

OVerall I was real happy with my effort, and I think maybe I have a bit more for the next race.

Here is the video of me getting my award, which they did not take out of the box before the presentation.

Both videos were taken by Steve's wife with a digital camera. They are a little fuzzy on the website, but look better if downloaded and watched in a smaller area.

My wife took the stills in the other post. My wife is the woman in the award video.

Thanks ladies.

Thanks to everyone that posts here for the motivation.

Again, I hope everyone had a successful race/training day.

Thanks for sharing! She represents my favorite part of race days!!FYI: I'm getting close to getting back into the game. This is great news, gb! Baby steps, yeah- but they're still steps. Congrats and keep up the healthy, good work. I definitely want to learn more about the swimming.

10 hours until the Bridge to Bridge, my first race and a 12K. Great to read the reports from Darrin and others, I'll be sure to let you all know how it goes!

What a day! Turned out to be a great day for a race, cool at the start, but sunny and no wind. A classic San Francisco fall day, a perfect example of why locals always say the best weather is September and October (I know Floppo, we're not supposed to tell people that). 10,000 participants between the two races (7K and 12K), that was quite an experience considering it was my first race.

It went really well, I know I beat my safety goal of 75:00 (10:00 mile), and pretty sure I beat my 70:00 (9:20 mile) best case by a little bit, just don't know by how much. I'm not sure because my stopwatch (my iPod) got paused at the 3:43 mark, which I didn't realize until I hit the first mile marker. And if there was a time displayed at the finish line I missed it, so I'll have to wait until the timing chip results are posted to know exactly how I did. What I do know is that my 2nd mile was 8:35, and my third was 8:49, and I was feeling good. I just ran after that and didn't really pay attention to my time, but I think I probably kept it around 9:00 miles the rest of the way. My stopwatch at the end showed 60:10, so assuming I missed 7:00 or so in that first mile (obviously pretty crowded and tough to get moving for especially the first 1/2 mile), I finished somewhere around 67:00, which would put me right at 9:00 miles.

Much eye candy throughout, gotta love spandex in the morning. Several times I found myself pacing a lovely example of the female form for awhile, nothing like that to keep you going.

The course made a turn at Fort Point underneath the Golden Gate Bridge, so for awhile I was running one way while people who have already made the turn are coming back the other. That was a little discouraging for a minute or two seeing all the people several minutes ahead of me....but after I made the turn and saw all the people several minutes behind me I was pumped up again.

As I neared the finish line, I started skipping songs on my iPod trying to find something to help push me through the end...2nd song to pop up was The Warrior by Scandal, couldn't have been a more perfect song to help drive me through the final couple of minutes.

Thanks again to everyone here for all the encouragement along the way, and I thought several times during the race about what I'd be posting here afterwards, which is just further motivation. Since I run by myself (I've NEVER run with anyone else), this group here really are my training partners in a way.

So with a 12K under my belt, I guess a 1/2 marathon is the next step? :goodposting:

I always thought April/May was the nicest weather... :excited: :lmao: ;) Great work, duck! Amazing that you ran so seemingly fast for your first time running that far! I assume you started at the Bay Bridge? Did they make you run up to the bottom of the GG Bridge? I'm spacing on where Ft Point is- there's a hill involved, right? How'd you feel during the race? Did the pace feel ok... was there something left in the tank afterwards or were you pretty tired? Again- congratulations and great job!ETA: I did a 1/2 marathon where there was an out and back like what you described- I actually liked seeing where people were in front of me, especially the guy right in front of me (couldn't catch him, unfortunately).

Did a 20m (MILES, not meter/res) run today.

Gimme that damn PTTS back Tri-man... it was a rough one. The wife threw her back out 2 days ago, which coincides with the last time the baby pooped. Both were cranky and helpless, putting more stress and lack of sleep than Floppo needed going into the run. I knew from the first 2 miles that it was going to be tough going, but I decided to push it some, especially on the back half to try and negative split it.

Did the Williamsburgh bridge through Brooklyn to the Brooklyn Bridge back to Manhattan (6m) and out and back along the E River, around the Battery and up the Hudson 4m. Had the return Brooklyn Bridge (ie: hill) at about the same point in the run that I'll have the 59th St Bridge on raceday. El Sucko. As did running through pretty barren parts of Brooklyn past the Navy Shipyard, through the Hasidic neighborhood under the W'burgh bridge and back across it and it's steep approach... felt like I was going backwards.

Did the out in 1:25 and the back in 1:26 for 2:51 total. Considering how hard it felt like I was pushing and how worn out I've been since getting back, I'm not as happy with the time as I probably should be.

Plus I came home to a pissed off, quasi-invalid wife who passed on the baby who wouldn't stop crying (not at all like him- normally a pretty happy guy) until he finally dropped his deuce at 4:30 this afternoon. :lmao:

Oh... ran by the finish of line of an amazing race- The Tunnel to Towers run, in honor of a fireman who, getting caught in shut-down Holland tunnel traffic on 9/11, strapped on his 70lbs of gear and RAN through the tunnel to the towers, where he gave his life. Amazing story, and what looks to be an amazing race (3m).

April/May, September/October - really you can't lose. The race started at the Ferry Building, so actually 1/2-3/4 mile up the Embarcadero from the Bay Bridge. Ran along Embarcadero, through Fisherman's Wharf, and then a hill up into Ft. Mason (30% grade, but only a block or two). I was actually stoked to hammer that hill, having done that hill up to Phoenix Lake a few times in the last few weeks, but it was so crowded I couldn't go as fast as I wanted when I got there. About 1/2 way up in started to open up and I sped up a bit, and coming out of that was the only time I was really winded. Ran along Marina Green from there, out along Crissy Field, and then to Ft. Point (which is right under the base of the GG). Turn around there, back along Crissy Field, and then a slow incline for the last 1/2-3/4 mile up into The Presidio and the finish line. Beautiful course, since you're along the water almost the entire time.I emptied the tank the last 2 minutes (thank you again Patty Smyth and Scandal for the push), but I think I might've been able to run a little faster throughout. I was afraid of pushing it too hard, not having experience running this distance (I did a long run about the same distance a few weeks ago, but was going much slower obviously), and I think a couple of times I slowed down a bit, not even consciously. My breathing really only got tough after the one hill, but a couple of times I was feeling it in my legs a bit. I know, Tri-Man, I know - lunges. What I did enjoy was that most of the race, particularly the first 4 miles or so, I was passing people, rarely getting passed.

Well, today was supposed to be a rest day, but I felt guilty after sitting around all afternoon watching the Packer game (addicted to running), so I went out for a quick 4-miler. Averaged 7:41, but with negative splits throughout, going 8:09, 7:47, 7:31, and 7:18.

I've only taken a quick glance at today's posts, but it looks like I'm not the only one who had a good run today. Congrats on some strong performances! :towelwave:

Thanks again to everyone here for all the encouragement along the way, and I thought several times during the race about what I'd be posting here afterwards, which is just further motivation. Since I run by myself (I've NEVER run with anyone else), this group here really are my training partners in a way. So with a 12K under my belt, I guess a 1/2 marathon is the next step?
First off, congrats, great time, great report! I've done the same thing, thinking what I'd post (honestly, I am not sure I even care what I write). I think it takes your mind off of what you are doing, in a good way. And, I think the motivation to post postie vs neagative in huge too. There are great stories here, and a ton of amazing effort & success.
