so.... uhhh.... any of you other guys have issues with, uh, things being jarred loose?
Huh?
i don't know how to put this gentlyi, uhh, it's like when you hammer down a burrito after a 12-pack of beer.. then wake up the next day and go to the Chinese buffet and top it off with a huge glass of milk.
I left my decoder ring in my other pants, do you mean does running create a situating where the turtle is poking its head out or the opposite
i have a powerful urge to #### when i finish running. for the last 10-15 minutes it's pretty much "touch and go". when i get home i pretty much have to take care of it.
ALWAYS do your business before going out for a run. I don't even think about leaving the house until afterwards...

 There's nothing worse than being 2 miles away from the nearest toilet when you need one the most.

Truer words have never been spoken. I still remember one particular "run" (pun intended) when it took everything in my power to make it to the nearest Subway restaurant to use the toilet. That was almost some SERIOUS embarrassment.

Furley follow-up:

Re: question/option 2 - Most of the time, I just pop out the door and take off at pace. It's kind of always been that way, though I believe it's helped over the past two years that I have my regular stretching routines. Before a run, I'll mainly just do a careful stretch of my calf muscles.

Re: "number 2" - I'm very conscious of this before workouts. Particularly when I'm in my before-work routines during the summer, I don't head out until I've taken care of things. I'll eat just a bit as soon as I wake up (even just a handful of cereal) to help get the system working. I've had more than enough of those days where I think things are OK, and then about four miles into the run, activity starts churning. NOT fun.

I'll be out of town this weekend, so I'll miss a great opportunity --- they're opening a new 12.5 mile highway extension through the southwest suburbs of Chicago next week (I-355). This weekend, for a modest fee, they're opening it up exclusively for bikers and runners! How cool is that? I'd love to be out there doing one or two loops on the bike, or just running some of it.

1) for guys who recently completed the Couch Potato to 5k plan or something similar... guys who are running 5 miles or less. do you find that the first mile is harder than the rest? i really struggle to get my wind and rhythm for the first mile or 1.5, once i cross that point my breathing is smooth and easy. i'm not going fast but i'm not struggling either. 2) for guys who have been running a while.. does this happen to you? does it last longer? say 3 miles?3) i'm still going with the "5 minute warmup walk" before jogging. do you guys do something similar? do you go from stretching to jogging? more warmup? i'm thinking my struggles stem from not being warmed up properly.. 5 minutes of walking doesn't break a sweat. i don't think 25 minutes of walking would do it either. do i just have to accept the fact that i'll struggle for the first mile, forever??
It's still always the toughest at the beginning of a run for me, absolutely, for about that first mile. In the 12K I ran a month or so ago I warmed up, stretched, warmed up some more, stretched again, so I was really ready to go and don't remember having that issue as the race began. But that obviously isn't very convenient for training runs.My normal routine is typically to warm up with a walk and then 2-3 minutes of slow jog, then stretch, then take off. My calves in particular would never let me just take off without being warmed up and stretched, and sometimes I find myself having to stop 5-6 minutes into my run to strech my calves again despite all that. Afterwards I always cool off for a couple minutes and then stretch again. This routine works well when I run during the day at work because I walk 5 minutes to the gym, change, put in a couple minutes on the treadmill, stretch, and then head out for the run. At home that's tougher because I do always end up stretching somewhere outside after I warm up, which becomes even less fun as the weather gets worse.

5 miles tonight on the treadmill. 9m/m pace. Pretty easy. I am going to try and run outside tomorrow and Sunday.

Happy running this weekend!

Man do I love this cool weather. I ran 11 miles today in 1:41:07, 7 minutes 8 seconds faster than my best time from a month ago. I did today's at a 9:11 pace. I really am beginning to think that I can do the ten miler on the 22nd in 1:30. I hope everyone else is as successful this weekend.

:lmao: I was going a totally different direction with that one...
I think I was too. :bag: I had a few drinks prior to posting after a crappy drive from IN to MI.

Based loosely on the advice from here, I switched from cold stretching to running at or near pace for about 1/4 to 1/3 of a mile and then stretching. I found it made a big difference in how I felt the day after the run. The first few paces after the stretch feel awesome as the muscles feel a great deal more flexible. I only do brief stretching of the calves, hamstrings and groin as well as some torso stretches (as I started to run longer distances, I found my rib cage getting sore, the torso work pre-run stopped this). I do similar stretches post run. After one crappy treadmill run earlier this week, I went out and bought a reflective vest (Brooks, velcros tight, like it a lot). I went for a night run last night, in the rain around 40 degrees or so and had a great run last night. No more treadmill until I absolutely have to. I ran without music to be aware of what was going on around me. I think the vest worked well. Cars stopped at lights making right turns at lights. I all out sprinted through intersections to avoid traffic and, more or less for giggles as a change in tempo. I wore "winter" type gear as was a bit too warm (Brooks winter lined pants, wicking long sleve top with synthetic top and wicking hat). The combo kept me dry too. I was trying to bust a sub 30 minute 4 miles, but didn't quite get it. Missed it by a minute and 20.

Ditto about the cold weather, and nice job on this morning's run! I did 12 miles this morning in the barely 30-degree weather with one the girls in my running club. She's a little slower than me, so it was a nice, easy run at 8:17 pace. It's kinda good; I always tend to run too fast on my long runs, so she keeps me in check.

Try plugging your 5K time into this Running Calculator for an indication of what you can do

i think i like the idea of the saturday run. i can get up early if i want.. run for as long as i want.. and have all day to recover. :lmao:

Yes, so what's your point? But thanks for the update. Are you doing this in every thread, or is this one just special.

first nipple bleeding today, too. :o
Two words. Nip Guards.
Two more. Body Glide.
   Body Glide = greatest running related invention (besides women's tight fitting clothing)
Amen. On the side of the Body Glide stick, it states "great for feet too", and they are right. With this and double walled socks I've had zero blisters, or other feet issues.Body Glide, its not just for nipples anymore. (thought I'd put my marketing degree to work).

I am still stuck in the dark ages using Vaseline  .

Ran 10.37 miles today with Steve at a 9:21 m/m pace.

21 miles for the weekend, most productive one yet.

Vaseline works just fine for me - Body Glide seems fabulously expensive in comparison  33 miles this week for me - most since 1996

Don't have a race coming up soon, so I haven't posted much but I just wanted to say thanks for all the useful information in here. Ran 3.5 miles through the neighborhood yesterday morning and 4 on the treadmill today. I'm working on cutting my mile times.

Did 9 miles on Sunday morning. Did the first 8 at 9m/m and then did the last mile in 8:01.

I tried the strawberry Clif Shot Blocks instead of the Gu. They taste/feel like thick gummy bears. I found the Gu much easier to deal with as far as logistics go. Trying to to open the CSB bag and then only take out 3 of them while sometimes they stick together was annoying. I would use them again.

I did 5 miles this morning. After my weekend runs I wanted to slow it down today so I went out and ran at a comfortable pace. Ended up doing a 8:52 pace. I really thought that I was going slower. Any way I feel great right now.

I did use the shot bloks for the first time this weekend. The only flavor I could find was cran-razz, I could not really tell what the flavor was when eating it. I didn't have any trouble with the packaging because I opened it pre-run and put it in this. The belt is so light I cannot even tell that I am wearing it. I am going to buy more shot bloks and use them on long runs to see if they make a difference in the way my legs feel at the end of a run.

How did you like them compared to the gels you've tried?eta: Oh... nice job on your "slow" run! Almost exactly my marathon pace.

Apparently we're all on the same wavelength here, because I tried the Shot Bloks for the first time this past weekend, too. I also tried the strawberry flavor, and while they didn't taste great, they certainly had a better consistency than the gels. The only minor problem was that it was pretty cool outside when we ran (upper 20s), so the Bloks were a little hard to chew. I'm guessing this won't be a problem when it's warmer outside. Like Darrin, I opened the pouch beforehand and just dumped them into a plastic bag, which seemed to work OK.

Other than that, followed up yesterday's 4-miler with another "putting-in-the-miles" 5-miler at just under 8-minute pace. I'll do a nice "medium-long" 8-miler tomorrow and a couple of other short runs later this week before doing 10-12 this weekend.

I'm Back...unfortunately.

EF: GREAT to hear that you finished, and I love the PTTS pic's!

Re: doing your business; coffee helps me clear the system, though on race days I always have fears of not clearing the system out enough

Re: nipple bleeding: I go shirtless on most long runs (this post is better w/o pic's!), and always use body glide for races

We had a great time at Atlantis. We ran 3x (5.5, 4.5 and 4.2 miles respectively) and as our blood streams turned into alcohol streams, the runs became more difficult. I easily put on 6 or 7 pounds, and won't be in too much of a hurry to take it off (stored up for the winter!). I got a nice and slow 6.5 miler in this morning and am hopefully starting to work on my base to run the Austin Marathon in February. Time will tell.

Who has races coming up?

:lmao:

Me, tomorrow night. I have an 8K along a 5 mile long lighted Xmas display. They close down the road and charge folks admision to drive through. Tomorrow night is the kick off event. Then, the family is off to do the beach thing too. We are heading to Mazatlan for the Thanksgiving week, meeting my sister, bro-in-law and their kids. My brother-in-law puts me to shame running wise, so I'll be spending the week trying to keep up (but I can still out  him).

i've got the Noodleini coming up with gruecd the saturday after Thanksgiving. just a 5K but with 10 extra lbs of turkey in my stomach i'm interested to see how it works out.

:pics:

which reminds me i have to get over there to sign up for it.

While no races are planned, I am already looking forward to next season, which will start with shorter distances. Targeting the Olympic distance triathlon feels right, for now. I took today off work and got in two workouts - a 40 minute swim this morning and a 90 minute bike ride this afternoon. It feels good, knowing that these these times already exceed the race times for an Olympic tri. Itching to run again, too, but the Achilles still says 'not yet.'

Damn... it makes me really happy to read that post, tri-man. (not about the achilles though- sorry to hear it's still not there).I got so hooked into the 1/2s (my ideal distance due to the proportion of swim to bike/run) and the longer time required, that I started dreading NYC as soon as I signed up. But it's an olympic and you are totally right- 90mins on the bike- 60mins running, 45mins swimming... all very managable training sessions for a guy like me these days. That really just made my day... ;)And the beauty of NYC is that they time it so that you are swimming with an ebb-tide down the Hudson. I did it in 24 mins last time- a good 10+mins faster than in a slack-tide/lake. You can pretty much lay flat on your back with a cocktail in one hand and finish the swim faster than I usually take to do 1500meters.eta: Any specific races targeted?

I tried 'em as well, lemon-lime. I tried just sucking on 'em at first (heard that was a way to do it, but they really didn't dissolve very well), but then chewed up one as I started my 10k. I wasn't too pleased with the gummy chunks getting stuck in my teeth. :lmao:Guess I'll finish off the packs I have during my marathon in January.
