Ran a 10k - Official Thread (9 Viewers)

I do beach running in the summer, and a few years ago I started buying sand socks.  Not the most stylish looking, and they probably only last 100-150 miles before you wear through them, but I haven't had any issues with blisters wearing them, and they also protect you from any stray shells you might land on.

For running truly barefoot, not only do you have to get acclimated, but I learned the hard way that different beaches will affect your feet differently.  I can go 4 or 5 miles barefoot at the Delaware beaches before the blisters really start forming, but I tried running barefoot in New Smyrna Beach, FL, and I actually tore my feet open after about 2.5 miles.
Sand socks?  Interesting!  I was unaware. They're like a bidet for the feet.

I paid the price for that beach run in Gulfport, but that was one of my favorite runs ever.  6 miles - the 'out' portion was on the hard sand near the water; then because of low tide, the 'in' portion consisted of running maybe 30-40 yards out in the Gulf ...running between the low tide sand reefs and splashing/high-stepping through the water in between them.  If I somehow get washed away from shore, I'd have ended up in Honduras or something.  Good times.

I've determined that the hardest thing about training for a marathon while having a newborn isn't fitting in the workouts. It's inadequate recovery between workouts due to the lack of consistent, uninterrupted sleep.

Question for you... with plans to race the monumental in November, is it possible for me to do a 50 +/- mile hike in early October? We used to day hike different parts of this trail a lot when I was a teen/early 20s. Actually coach used to also take us here occasionally for runs when getting ready for cross country season. About a dozen years ago, I the whole thing North to South in 3 days. I have a friend that has been talking about wanting to do it at some point. Yesterday we were talking and he may be doing this sometime this fall. Basically looking to do it with some pace - we'd go 50 miles +/- from south to North in 2(+?) days - i.e. 20 to 25 miles per day.

Is this something I could do/fit into training in some manner about a 4 to 6 weeks before the Monumental or is it dumb to even consider? I was a fat, out of shape dude when I did this before and packed poorly (i.e. carried far too much gear). I have wanted to do it again for awhile. Kind of prefer to do it in the spring but this fall may be the more optimal time to plan it out for scheduling (that is other than the monumental...).
I am in the same boat as you.  My endurance has fallen off and its just about time to get back on the horse and start my prep for Indy.  I'll be honest, I'm not optimistic I'll be able to make it to PR shape in 7+ months.  Will you?  Perhaps...perhaps not.

All this is to say, this hike seems really interesting and if its important to have that experience, I would do it.  I think you could probably make it so it has very little impact on your overall race planning.  If it does, then so be it.  The memory of this will probably be worth it.

There will be other Monumentals, but you have been waiting 30 years for this hike.  I'd do a hard tempo the day before the hike and use the next two days of hiking to help strengthen the legs by lugging that pack.

You only live once....make cool memories when you can.

Interesting.  I have the exact opposite experience. My cliftons will last 600 miles while others at 400 miles.
I'm a big heel striker, and that's where they went flat.  If you're not a heel striker, that could help to explain the difference
Fwiw, my older cliftons have gone for 1k +/-. They've completely had it. My newer ones are around 400 and going strong.

Will try out those new Sauconys and get new clifton's as needed or when they go on sale, whichevers first.

There is just a little bit of difference between you and I going for a marathon PR... and by little, I mean boatloads! Partially because you have set a much higher bar than I ever have. And a big part because I had plenty of holes in my training the first time around so there is lots and lots of room to do better between now and then.

But, funny you would mention it because last night and this morning I was playing around on strava and found some features I hadn't really looked at before. No idea how they are calculating any of this stuff, but strava says my fitness level is getting close to where I was last year about this time before I started to slack off. Which also has me in the ballpark of where I was 2 years ago when I decided to run my first marathon. And there were plenty of lulls between then and November so, there is zero reason I can't be in better shape this November than I was 2 Novembers ago if I just do the work I am supposed to do between now and then.

As for doing the hike or not, I think I could do it and be ok but that doesn't I should do it. We will see if my buddy is even really serious about doing it or not and/or who else may sign up to go. Also depends on when he decides to do it verses when the Monumental is. I appreciate the feedback and will just have to decide what is most important to me as the plans emerge.

4/27 in bay ridge brooklyn, 3 loops (1 hour away via subway or water taxi/ferry), probably a little bit of hills but not much, risk of wind by being on the the river.
Just signed up.

Turns out they also have the same race this Saturday. My legs aren't right for it...but tempted.

This is my problem. I hit the heels pretty hard often, and even worse, on the outside of my heels. I do this walking and running and it's pretty easy for me to tell when it is time to replace shoes by the wear and tear on the outer heel. Usually I start to feel it after runs in my knees, etc and a quick check on the souls of the shoes makes it obvious. They tend to get rather rounded there and the loss of support is blatant.

This is solid advice, and it's also the reason why I'll almost certainly run Boston in October despite the fact that it could possibly have a negative impact on my race in Indy.

Now you know why I haven’t qualified for Boston yet.

Dang kids.
Word.  I didn't even think about marathoning until my kids were grown and off to college.  I was generally happy with a summer triathlon, and even then, I was fortunate to be working in university settings with pool, track, and gym access.  Of course, those years were before I got addicted to the drug known as the 10K Thread.

The inside of my right knee is a little sore.  Seems to go away once I'm warmed up (or did last night, at least).  Diagnose me, internet doctors....

Not running marathons isn't an option for me.  What remains to be seen is whether or not I can achieve the same high standards that I've set for myself.

I'm not the nut some of you are but I'm not sure how many marathons I have in me. I am definitely doing at least one more but not sure how many others after that. We'll see is all I have to say about it.

**looks at schedule**

Medium long run, 80 mins

**recalls my consumption so far today**

3 beers, 2 tullys, and a piece of irish soda bread

**welp...and away. we. go**

Not running related, but do @ChiefD or any of you other gents know some voodoo to remove a stuck cartridge in a shower valve?  We've tried some vinegar and heat so far with no luck...

Are you tryin to remove the whole valve? Is it plastic?

I assume you have the water off. If it's a whole valve it should just slide out of there. Can you take a pic and post it?
At work right now so negative on the pic, but it looks something like this.  The one in there is 20 years old and leaking a bit (well, when the water is on).  We have very hard water and apparently it's relatively common in those scenarios for the piece to be very difficult to pull out due to build up.  Hence, the vinegar and heat suggestions.  One of my coworkers suggested letting WD-40 soak in so I may try that next.

Ah ok.

Gonna be hard to get that one out based on that age. I like to use my BFH for those. Usually does the trick.

Oh, and to bring this thread back to running after selfishly turning it into the 800-shovels help line, at 10 days out until my half I have officially started weather stalking.

Some WD-40 and extra violence ended up doing the trick.  Thanks again!

How does it look?
Fairly meh.  50ish but windy and showers.  It's so far out though that a lot could change.

Some days I feel like I'm light years from where I was and some days I have hope. Tonight was a good night. But it also was a good reminder that I have plenty of work to do.

This would be a bad idea....right?

I need to figure out if I'm doing speed work tomorrow or going into a two day taper....

(Had planned on biking out and running one loop this Saturday anyways...)
