Ran a 10k - Official Thread (12 Viewers)

Agree.  If you aren't sucking wind or HR going up dramatically to run the same or slower pace as you progress, seems all good.  Maybe the tempo wasn't too fast, MAC.  Maybe you got faster.
I'm hoping it was both.  There's no way I hold that pace for an hour, but I think I would have made it 5.  I didn't even know I went a full 4 until afterwards.  I knew it was 25 minutes and change, but figured it was closer to 3.5 miles.  Either way, I'm trying not to let it inflate my expectations for my St. Patty's 5 miler, but after yesterday (which had some snow/ice components too) that'll be difficult.

I am racing a 5 miler tomorrow, not sure what to expect as it is a fairly hilly course that I haven't run before.

I gave my notice today at work.  I have been at this job for 16 years and started here right out of college so this is all new to me.  I start the new job on 3/14 and my commute will now be 9 miles instead of 32.  This means potentially more time to run or maybe I will now sleep in an extra 30-45 minutes everyday.

Now you're gonna be even faster.

Congrats on the new gig!!

Thanks guys, I am excited about the new job.  One of the downsides is I am losing my real life training partners, it's a good thing I have got this place.

New board blows, no idea why the Hang box showed up above...

Day three of rest for me with the ankle, and skipping my long run tomorrow. Trying to take the long view but I am seriously stressed out. Hope to try a very easy run on Sunday but nervous about it.

Missing a few days or a week won't cut into your fitness much at all.  Better to be patient, hard as that is.

And congrats, pbm!  The uncertainty of change can be difficult, but you'll quickly settle into new routines.  In a few weeks you'l be wondering how on earth you tolerated that long commute for so long!

Finished my first 8k in just under an hour.  I thought I would get more tired than I did, but the energy was good.  Shooting for 10k next.  It was a lot of fun.

The more you race, the more you get a sense of how hard you can push yourself ...the more you build confidence in your racing.  Way to go!!!

For me, it's the new life as a professor - no classes on T, Th; a single noon class on F. But in keeping with your thought, I have no idea how I managed to do it before, given work and family. A big trade-off was sleep.

eta: Speaking of Steve, I got the new Runners' World with a breakdown of the Olympic marathon trials. I sooo would have loved to have seen Steve as part of all that! Steve, I trust it eats at you, knowing you were on the cusp. But we are all so proud of your success and effort!
Hi all, sorry for not being around for the past couple of weeks. I made a decision to take on more responsibilities at work that ended up being more time consuming than I expected. (then again, I am sure almost everyone here can relate, so I am not going to ##### about it, part of growing up)

I was going through the thread and trying to catch up on the last 2-3 weeks I've missed before I make a big personal announcement on the running front, and it looks like MAC ran a huge PR at a local 10K and there is an impending showdown at Broad Street. (which is a bucketlist race of mine, but I can't run it this year due to the latest curveball I have been thrown in my spring racing plan). Looks like this year's Boston marathon crew is putting together some solid training as well.

I am going to piggyback off of Triman's post above since it's related to some huge news I got about a month ago, but I have finally done enough research/follow-up/prep and my training is coming around again that I am now comfortable announcing that I am going to follow through with the opportunity of a lifetime.

So I was born in Taiwan and actually moved to the United States when I was 9, and became a naturalized citizen in 2004 at the age of 22. At the time I was a recent college graduate and no plans of running competitively again, so when I was told that U.S. did not recognize dual citizenship with Taiwan I just nodded my head and accepted it as a fact. Well, the weekend of the Houston marathon a friend told me about a dual citizen of Taiwan/U.S that had recently represented Taiwan at the Junior/Youth world championships in 2015 and also competed at USATF junior nationals. My father and I did some research and made a few phone calls after the race and we got confirmation that I am indeed still eligible to represent Taiwan in international competition. Long story short, I am going to try to get an Olympic Marathon qualifier (2:19:00) their qualification window closes, and with only one other Taiwanese national with the standard so far I may have a shot of going to Rio if I get it. I was planning on going for it at Boston, but the kicker is the time has to be run on a IAAF-certified course, and Boston is out. (well, you can get a qualifier if you finish top 10 in that race since it's an IAAF gold label race, but the only way that's happening is if some natural disaster prevented all the Africans from making the trip). The IAAF-certification requirement also pretty much knocks out every race in the U.S. this spring (unreliable conditions, hilly courses, lack of competition). I got into a coupe of fast races in Europe in mid-April, so I'll be putting my money where my mouth is and spending a nice chunk of savings to go chase the time there in a couple of months. :)

Whoa, this is so awesome.  Can you start (or someone start for you) a Go Fund Me up without harming your amateur status to defray some of the cost?  I would be so in to invest in this dream.  Either way   to see how this plays out.

Steve, as always you're inspirational.  It's fun watching from afar as you pursue your dreams.

So I'm in sort of a conundrum.  (although that might be too harsh a word)

The Mt. Mitchell challenge and black mountain marathon races are this weekend.  I'm registered for the marathon but Bass and I were discussing swapping (pretty sure Bass could just run the 26 without swapping but the swap allowed me to do the challenge).   I'm pretty sure I could finish the challenge but would be tore up afterwards and probably take around 7 hours (maybe longer?). The races take place near the home of one of my best friends I haven't had a chance to hang out with much in the past few years and we'll hit Asheville afterwards, presuming I can walk.

If I do the marathon I'll be in a much better position to enjoy the weekend with a good buddy.  If I do the challenge, I'm expecting to not be able to enjoy Saturday night.  Long term satisfaction might be higher with the 40, but I'm rather looking forward to hanging out on a guys' night - which I haven't had in a long time.  Of course, all of you will probably tell me to do the 40...  truly, what would you do?

Appreciate it.  I haven't been running as much as I've wanted to over the last 6 weeks or so and this 8k reminded me of just how much I get out of these things.  I did my last official 5k in 34 and change so my mile average can be better.  I have another 5k in April and hoping to get under an 11 minute mile.  That would be a good time for me.  If you look at me, you'd never think I can run at at all, but I like being stealthy.  Here's a reference pic: Osaurus post Gasparilla 8k

I would run the 26 and hang with my buddy.  A marathon is still serious business, and as time goes on hanging out with friends becomes more rare.

I'm leaning this way.  Not to get into personal stuff here, but having a good night out would do my psyche some good.

Fantastic Steve.  We'll be watching.

Doctor's appointment tomorrow to see what to do with my knee.  It's crazy to be hoping for surgery, but that offers the best chance for some ability to run, which I really can't do right now.  I can run on the TM for about five minutes without pain.  The good news is that the pain goes away by the next morning, so I am not doing any damage.  If I had to live with it I could run a bit.

My nephew ran his first half a couple of weeks ago and is running his first full in April (OK City).  He suggested we try for a half Iron after he is done with that.  Maybe I could manage that with the knee as it is.

Would be an easy choice for me to do the 26, but I get the impression you're wired differently than most. I mean that in a good way. But like Chief said as you get older the chNces to spend quality time with old friends are harder to come by. And 26 shouldn't leave you feeling unfulfilled on the running front.

Week 4 in the books, and it's been an interesting start to this training cycle. Mentally I am not into it - and not sure why. Half is April 9th, and my A goal for this one is 1:45. B goal is 1:48.

As such, I've tried to switch up my training a little bit this time. Before I started training with the HM, I just ran based on how I felt. Then, when I started running by heart rate, I ran so many slow miles that I'm not sure I was ready to run fast when it came time for the HM. So this time I have tried to run more of my runs at a slightly faster pace - really by feel. And then a couple of days a week run by HR and keep the engine slower. It seems like 150 - 155 seems to be my sweet spot for my slower runs.

I can most definitely see progress though in my HR. I've compared a few runs versus last year and even some this year:

Jan 29, 2015: 4.4 Miles, 153HR, 10:38 Pace

Jan 26, 2016: 4.01Miles, 155HR, 9:40 Pace

Feb 18, 2015: 4.13 Miles, 150HR, 11:11 Pace

Feb 17, 2016: 5.01 Miles, 151HR, 9:56 Pace

Feb 25, 2015: 4.34 Miles, 168HR, 8:56 Pace

Feb 9, 2016: 4.32 Miles, 169HR, 8:12 Pace

Feb 8, 2015: 9.02 Miles, 146HR, 11:46 Pace

Feb 7, 2016: 10.34 Miles, 155HR, 10:16 Pace

I am encouraged as hell by these numbers, and my plan for this half is just go balls to the wall and see if I can crush it. But dang, it's been hard to get going this year.

Best of luck Steve, someone get the funding thing set up!

after four days off from running (hit the bike pretty hard Fri & Sat) I ran 8 yesterday @ 8:21, stayed away from hills to lessen the stress. The ankle was uncomfortable but iced it immediately afterwards and it didn't stiffen or swell up so feeling pretty upbeat about it. Hoping it was just a tweak that needed rest and not a chronic/overuse type of thing. I'm resisting the urge to run today despite feeling good and will get back on the bike. Planning on three easy runs Tues - Thurs, day off Fri then hopefully feeling good for 20M on Saturday. Will definitely swap in some bike workouts instead of running 7 days/week going forward.

true, and a sub 4 would have been top 3 in my age group last year.  So there would be a goal.

be careful!  it sounds like you're being smart, but if you need to break off the 20 to prevent injury, it's well worth doing.

FUBAR - I agree ...stick with the marathon plan (with a better shot of enjoying the weekend).

Nigel - good to hear you've had some improvement.  If you try the 20, you might want to do some loops that keep you close to your home base in case you need to bail.  But in one respect, slow easy miles would be better than any hard effort.

Chief - Keep plugging!  Exciting to see the improvement year over year.

Steve - Wow!  just wow!!  I'm sure you know what you need to do to find 3 more minutes.  It's doable.  Make it happen!   Wow!!!

Thanks for the support as always guys. I got a couple of jokes from close friends about how my "consolation prize" for not qualifying for the U.S. trials may end up being going to Rio. (and also Europe). I am set on the financial front, the upside of balancing an office job with my training is that I don't have a lot of time/ways to spend my paycheck other than bills/food and running trip. Plus, my wife is talking about making the trip out of makeup anniversary trip that we didn't take a couple of years ago, so I am definitely not going to use a gofundme for that.

FUBAR - I like the marathon plan as well for the same reason most others pointed out. It's harder and harder to find a chance for quality time with friends.

Osaurus - Belated welcome to the thread. One of my good friends runs that race (Gasparilla) every year, glad to hear you guys got decent weather/conditions for it this year.

Worrieking - Hoping for good news with the knee. Get healthy so we can run Houston together again next year.

Nigel - Best of luck with the ankle as well.

ChiefD - Agree with Tri-Man, it's cool to see the progress you are making, especially knowing you still have a lot more room for improvement because you're training with a scientific and patient approach.

A big training week for me.  Running on M and W doesn't work well due to the teaching schedule, but it works fine to focus on the other five days.

M: rest day

T: 12 miles, recovery/easy

W: strength work

Th: 14 miles w/ 12 miles tempo - 7:41/mi, HR 155

F:  10 miles, recovery/easy

S: 12 miles with 40 repeats of a modest slope (< 100 yds long)

S: 22 miles - 8:37/mi, HR 141

So my first ever 70 mile week!  I'd done the exact same 12 mile tempo run back in mid-November, and that was 8:09/mi, HR 154.  !!  And as those on FB know, the Sunday run occurred after 2 hours on the roof of my two-story colonial fixing a wind-damaged chimney cap.   Even then, the run was rather effortless ...just cruised through the neighborhoods of Chicago.

Steve, it is one heck of a consolation prize.  The ups and downs associated with not making the US Trials after all the work you put in, and now you have a legit chance of running in the Olympics is unreal.  Which marathons are you considering?  You just raced a marathon a month ago, are you recovered from that effort?

Tri-man, if you keep putting in 70 mile weeks you are going to be much faster than 3:30.

Ditto!  Looking forward to following along on your adventure, @SteveC702!

Yeah, his 12 "tempo" miles on Thursday are less than a minute per mile away from his Sunday long run pace.  And @tri-man 47 isn't 155 a little lower than your marathon pace HR?
Yes, Juxt, marathon average would be in the mid 160s.  Ideal pattern is mid/high 150s for 10 miles+, creeping through the 160s for 10 miles, then 170s and gutting it to the end.  I was just touching 160 at the end of the 12 mile run (and then only because I picked up a bit at the end).  Implication, as pbm notes: In a rested state, I can theoretically start with 7:40 or better (due to the downhill nature of Boston's first 16).  Then I hold a good pace through the hill sequence before pulling the motivational tricks to finish strong over the final 5 miles.

I'm pretty stoked over the next six weeks of training, which includes the university spring break in two weeks (=nothing to do but run).  :boxing:

Sent FUBAR a pm but the RD kind of hosed me so I don't have a 40 mile ticket anymore.  Matter of fact, I'm on the outside looking in.  On the plus side, I can watch FUBAR finish and my son is going for his first mary finish.  Sounds like you two have the same 4 hour goal.

Why don't we both shoot for the epic summit next year.

I mentioned here how cool it was going to the premier of this at the SF Run Co. a few weeks back, hanging with the film maker and the subjects of the movie - Billy Yang's Mont Blanc hit YouTube this week, well worth the watch.  Whether it's the 100K CCC or the 100M UTMB, this is a huge goal for me to one day toe the line in Chamonix.

Should be a blast.

For next year, in theory I'm on board.  In reality we'll have to see.  I might sign up for it because they'll let us defer, but we might be in China around this time next year for a few weeks.  We won't know the exact timing for a while yet.   If we go before the race my training will take a hit, if it's after it will work.

Then there's the fact that I don't know what goals I'll have for 2017

I've lost 6# over the past week thanks to this stupid friggin' stomach bug that won't go away.  Praying I'm turning the corner today.  It's the first morning I haven't had to spray. :X :X

The guilt about my lackluster winter is starting to weigh on me. :hot:

When is your goal marathon, Fubar?

Speaking of marathons, I feel like I'm already itching to sign up for another one. Isn't if funny how short our memories are? Or how selective? I look back at the summer training fondly, even though I know it was pure misery over half the time. Anyway, I'll probably wait and most likely run the same marathon in the fall.

Yeah, I've been waffling back and forth on this one. A month ago, I was ready to run one. Now, not so sure.

Chicago sign ups start in a few weeks, and unlike last year, they will charge your credit card automatically once you are selected instead of giving you a week to really decide. So if I attempt to get in, I need to be fully committed.

I hope you get better soon and you get your mojo back.  This thread is a lot more fun when you are chasing after PRs.  I am afraid your training guilt is only going to get worse this summer when you see Hang10 working his way to a sub 3 and FUBAR getting a BQ.  You could be on that wave.

No pressure.   :D

I, too, would like to see Ned return from namby-pamby land and get back on his horse.   :P

Meh. You will go out this weekend and run some crazy ### run like 12 miles at a 7:55 pace.  With a HR of 135.

I keep thinking about hating running last summer when the humidity was like running in soup.

But dammit, I look at those HR numbers I posted yesterday, and I hate to give up now. I've made a ton of progress over the last couple of years.

I do have a couple of things working for me this year though. My work released a new benefit this year, that after 5 years of being here you get a 30 day paid sabbatical. I've decided to take mine the last week of July and the first three weeks of August.

So I will have some serious free time to pile up some miles. Well hell, now I'm talking myself into it again.
