Ran a 10k - Official Thread (5 Viewers)

ran what is, i think, my 2nd fastest trot ever (i don't keep detailed records. just go off memory.)

wind was stiff enough but the temps weren't bad. over-dressed for 20 degrees with a pair of mittens & vest over the top of my shirt.

highlight had to be the start line tower of speakers, which normally blast music, then the anthem, then the race countdown petering out a few minutes before the official start... then only emitting random booms every minute or so while we all stood there idly, confused.

nothing like standing in a big crowd and a sudden boom going off

when i checked results yesterday, the men's winner for a 5 mile race was just over 23 minutes. first place by about 3 minutes and change!

today he's no longer listed    🏆 ❌

What do you wear on your lower body when it’s too cold for shorts? I’m looking to upgrade this winter but I’m not sure I want to rock tights.

When it's that cold just put shorts over the tights. I will go tights only if I'm on trails or it's dark because the maximum number of encounters can be counted on one hand. Compression sock/shorts combo works for me in the 20's too - a little extra attention to head, hands, and neck then my legs aren't uncomfortable. Dont feel like I need my knees covered until it's down in the teens.

Why not? You shy? ;)

Nah. Much more effective (and a better look, IMHO) to just invest in a pair of quality wind briefs.

Whatcha mean?
Once it's that cold it's just about time on feet. The exact tipping point for me depends on a lot of factors, but once I'm dressing for warmth and comfort I no longer worry about the quality of run. I'll get more out of it by just dressing for the conditions than by trying to force a workout. Save the workouts for when conditions are tolerable. Or schedule a date with the dreadmill.

I rock the tights with shorts over them in cooler temps.  I figure I'm more likely to get "man, he's committed to be out running in this crap" looks than "what a fashion trainwreck he is".

Or at least that's what I tell myself.

What do you mean by this? Not sure this happens here.

Carmel, which becomes my goal race for the spring.
Sweet!

When you are done with your race, you can come pace me for my final 13.1.

Hopefully we can arrange for a meet-up before the race. Maybe even lunch or dinner the day before if you are so inclined.

I guess if I decide to run a spring marathon that should be the one?

Do it. Maybe we can talk @gianmarco into running the half.
That would be cool. I haven’t decided what I want to do in the spring but an early marathon could set me up for some late spring fun at other distances before I get into Chicago Marathon training in the summer.

I hadn’t considered Carmel until your post. I want to make sure I don’t lose fitness by taking too much time off and training for this might be a perfect prescription. I’ll think about it more next week and make sure I can take that preceding Friday off.

Me and the misses are going up that Thursday, so we would be around all day Friday to grab my packet and execute a normal marathon routine. We are staying at the Marriott right down the road from the start/finish line.

18 week plan for me starts Monday. As mentioned before, going to do the Hanson plan.  The goal is to not miss a workout and really try and put as much into this as I can and make an honest effort into breaking 4:00. Praying that my stomach stuff holds up, which so far has been good for the last 12 months or so.

Weight is already down about 4 pounds, so I've trimmed some excess weight during base building. The plan is to lose another 5 before race day, so that would put me at 145 pounds.

Based on the reading I've done of the Hanson book, coupled with my heart rate data over the last 4 years, I think I'm going to train as if my goal is 3:50. This is ultra aggressive, but I am going to trust the Hanson process.

If my heart rate data throws me any red flags, I'll back it down, but this marathon deserves my full cooperation. Both mentally and physically. The plan is to also dial in the diet even better over the next 18 weeks - the right types of calories and a severe reduction in the bad stuff.

So bye bye soda, and beer intake will be seriously reduced. Sugary snacks will be reduced dramatically. Processed foods reduced dramatically. Should be entertaining for my wife going to the grocery store.

Pray for me.  :headbang:

Regarding next year and @gianmarco, when do we find out if we won the lottery for the relay race?
Lottery for team entry: Monday, Nov. 26 - Monday, Dec. 3

Lottery winners announced and charged entry fee: Wed, Dec. 5
(Entry fee is $600 per team plus processing)

I'll be on this on Monday.

ETA -- I think I mentioned this, but it's usually about $150-160 per person between entry fee and van rental.

@Ocram, as you get into heavier mileage, you probably won't even want the extra soda, beer, and bad foods.  And the longer runs will do a lot to trimming the pounds.  In that regard, you might want to add some strength training early on here, knowing that the long runs and heavy mileage will slowly eat away at the upper body mass.

So an 8-year-old boy ran a 3:32 marathon here yesterday. Torn between amazement at the kid and a little concern about whether that’s physically ok for such a little kid

Amazing.

And having raised two boys now past age 8, they would normally run around the house and yard for 3:32 without stopping every saturday and sunday for years.

Should have strapped my running watch on one of them. Probably went 26.2 easily.

Sweet.... All accounted for except @JShare87 and I'm pretty sure he's in (plus enough maybes that we should be good to go). I'll be on it tomorrow....
Thanks for doing this. Let me know if we get in, and I can send you money via PayPal/Venmo/Zelle or whatever.

One request. Let's get one of those 15-person vans. The extra space is invaluable.

The running gods hate me.

5" of snow on the ground and a blizzard warning until 9 pm tonight.

All you can do is laugh.

FWIW I don the boots and plough through the snow at a slower pace.  Still a good workout, even if it's not running.

Oh, I will run. Luckily my city does a great job of clearing the streets. I just run on the street instead of the sidewalk. It will be fine. Just hope it's not a sign of the next 18 weeks.
