Compare the average winter temps of Kansas City to northern cities and then HTFU.

https://www.currentresults.com/Weather/US/average-city-temperatures-in-december.php
And the small Fall window when most of y’all take a break from complaining about the weather where you live has officially ended. ;)

Of course none of you live where everything is on fire for a month every year.  I did my share of #####ing about that.

But the rain came this week (first in over 180 days in some places here in The Bay) to douse the fires and clean the air, and it was like Goldilocks out there this morning for my run - clear, sunny, and about 55 degrees.

I’m still not really training, just going out and running what I feel like running. It’s kind of nice, worrying about nothing other than getting back to some level of consistency.  With lottery season happening over the next two weeks I should have a better idea of what the first half of next year will look like, and I can start to map out the training plan.

Hope everyone had a great extended weekend with family and friends!

The running gods hate me.

5" of snow on the ground and a blizzard warning until 9 pm tonight.

All you can do is laugh. strap on the Yaktrax and enjoy a peaceful, slightly-high stepping run through the snow.
Fixed.  I truly love a run in fresh powder (before the thaw/refreeze ice layer underneath forms).

I wonder if you guys got in my head - we got a group together for a 6 person 60 mile relay 2 weeks after this.  Given the timing it's not gonna go well - or at least fast, but should be a hell of a time.  Still bummed this didn't work out, but - June 1.  Not in this house!

Are the odds pretty good of getting in?

The team I was on and that my wife was on prior has gotten in every year they've tried.  I don't know if it's because there's preference or what, but that's all I know.  I would lean toward saying yes, pretty good.

This race just started in 2013 so as it gets more popular, it may get more difficult.

@gianmarco I don't see any reason I can't be on the B Team if you need me. Might have to bring the wife and kids and make a family trip.  Thats the weekend after their school is out and we always do something fun.

Looks like all the "B" team people couldn't commit and were only going to maybe be available as subs.  And it looks like we have all 6 for the team.

Doesn't seem smart to sign up for a 2nd team at this point.

If you want it for sure you can always nab my spot.  I am committed to do it, but it's a week before my summer vacation. So it wouldn't break my heart if someone wanted my spot.

anyone else get mad at themselves when they look out a window at home, see a race going by and realize you aren't in it?

spaced that there was a 15k & half marathon on Sunday. haven't run either in the past.. for no good reason. turns out the route goes right past my house now. had no idea until i let the dog out for her morning constitutional.

then i just stood in my doorway watching people trot by for a good 30 minutes.

We'll see.  Maybe a firm alternate list is needed instead of the B Team.

Noodleini, right?  I actually thought about heading up for that, but I decided to wait and (maybe) do one closer to home this coming Sunday, weather permitting.

When you are done with your race, you can come pace me for my final 13.1.
:lmao: :lmao:

Regarding lunch/dinner, I'm not sure if that will work since I'll be coming down with my wife and a couple of other friends, but we should definitely try to connect for a post-race beer or (at the very least) a pre-race picture!

One of the reasons I didn't consider a spring marathon is because it'll be nice to go through winter without needing to get out in this stuff.  I'll do it again, but last year proved to me that mentally I'm not ready for back-to-back.  Hell, I wasn't even really ready for what happened last year.  Bounced back well, but early January made me her #####.  I need at least one off before I think about it again.  We're getting something good over the next 50-60 hours and I'll probably go for a short stroll tomorrow as long as it's safe enough, but that'll be it until it's outta here.

I'm lucky that I can hit the Pettit when it's crappy outside but I need quality.  I can tolerate the cold/snow when it's just a matter of bundling up and putting in the miles.

Lifted legs yesterday for the first time in a long time.  Lowering myself down to use the toilet this morning was a challenge...

When you've got such a long way to go, it's understandable......

I think someday I'll come to terms with indoor running.  That day isn't now though.  It took all winter, but I eventually was able to get myself up for intervals workouts on the dreadmill.  Initially I hated every second of them, but not so much that it negatively impacted output or caused me to lose focus and screw up form or led to problems in runs in the days that followed, etc.  And by March I no longer had to psyche myself up for them - if the elements and my schedule didn't intersect then I just went to the gym.  Mile repeats March 14th was the day I finally knocked down that barrier - 6:30/6:15/6:00/5:45.  30 degree day, but with 20-25 mph wind and uncleared sidewalks.  Didn't even consider doing an outdoor workout - just went to the gym.

There are indoor track options around here - and the next time I spin the wheel on a spring marathon wrapping my head around them will by my mindset priority.  Not just going to do it, but maintaining focus throughout and eventually not even thinking about it when deciding that's the best choice for the day.  I don't have to expend any energy ensuring I stay locked in on the roads and trails - it's natural.  For me indoor running is an energy succubus though.  I'm not sure what I waste more energy on - thinking about tempo's (that I may never do again) or any runs indoors.  But I'll over come it some day.

The snow/cold is one thing ...but this current storm that rolled through Chicago had heavy, wet snow with lots of wind, and now it's turning colder.  I waited until the snow ended to shovel (2 hours of full body effort), but those that cleared the snow early now have a thin layer of ice developing.  I hate ice.

Need some injury advice.  I'm not sure how it happened, but I did a tempo run on Wednesday night.  Everything during my run was totally fine, felt great actually.  I might have gone harder than I should have, but only for maybe a mile or 2.

Anyways, I get back to the house and I'm halfway stretching in the kitchen.  There is still nothing out of the norm.  Probably 10 minutes after getting back to the house I leaned on my counter talking the the wife and kids for a few minutes.  As soon as I pushed myself  from leaning on the counter I felt this instant sharp pain in my upper hamstring/glut area (I'm no doctor, so its where the ### meets the leg).

I took yesterday off and felt a good bit better.  I missed an easy 3 mile run on Thursday so I figure thats a good one to make up today.  I felt okay getting up and ready, but after about a mile it got painful again.

I have a lot of running on my plan between now and the Dec 1st HM.  You guys think this is just a pulled muscle that 3-4 days rest will cure?  Didn't know if the fact that it was an instant sharp pain suggested it was more than just a pulled muscle.

I didn't stretch at all before that tempo run...just kind of eased into it.

Muscle pulls usually happen during activity; not after.  Is there bruising?  If no then it's likely not a pull/sprain.  When was the last time you net 450+ miles across 4 1/2 months?  You've developed quite the training base since August and what you're going through may just be a product of overuse - just from what you described my mind went to your back/sciatica.  Not saying it is, you'd need to get it checked out to confirm/deny.  Definitely give it at least a couple-few days before running again, but just being 2 weeks out from the race mentally I'd plan to just start the taper a little early.  Ultimately, just remember you'll be best off toeing the line over tapered and healthier than the alternative.
Quick update...Its been 10 days since I've run and I still don't think I could go out and have a successful run.  On a scale of 1-10 the pain went from about an 8 to a 5 at best.  Today is the best its felt and its still uncomfortable.   @MAC_32 I think you are correct about the sciatica nerve.  It seems spot on from what I've read.   Any walking or standing with weight on it makes it painful.   I hopped on the bike a few days ago and felt no pain at all.  I thought I might experience a set back the day after, but there was nothing.   I'm guessing that pretty much confirms that its not a pull or a strain?

I'd like to be a bad ### and tough it out for Saturday, but I think I'm going to sit this HM out.   I really have nothing to prove to myself, I know I can't beat my PR (1:53:04) that was never the goal anyways.   I was able to stick to the plan I had for 10+ weeks and I'm happy with that.  I fell into running 20-25 MPW and it felt really good.  I need to get to where that's the floor and maybe this time next year I'll get to 40 MPW.  I'd feel so stupid to fumble thru the race only to set myself back for 4-8 weeks during the nice time of year here while turning in a 2 hour run.

I think I'll reset some goals for the winter/spring around here.  There's always a 5k my company sponsors I'll actually RACE this year, then a 15 mile trail run in Feb and there's always a HM somewhere close in March/April.

I saw the quote this morning and it hit me.  "You cannot plant and reap in the same season."

I also reserve the right to change my mind by Friday.   :boxing:

I have taken some time off with a busy holiday weekend. My son ended up skipping the 5K as he got pink eye the day before the race, so I ran with my daughter. She has a bad ankle that she has been dealing with for too long and she ended up twisting it about a mile into the race. It was a struggle for her, but she battled through it.

There is a black Friday football game that my buddies and I have been playing for 26 years, last year I decided to watch from the sidelines because I wasn’t recovered from my marathon.  This year I was shamed into playing.  Game (two hand touch) went well with no major injuries, but I am sorer now than after the marathon.

At the bar after the game many beers were consumed, memories of the nonathletic football game long forgotten, some bets were made. My buddy Jeff was busting Fat Jerry’s balls about having to skip the half marathon we ran in September because of injury. Jerry challenged Jeff that he could beat him in a mile race.  Jeff quickly accepts and they agree that they will race the morning of our fantasy football draft (Saturday Labor Day weekend) with $200 on the line.  When my brother in law heard about the bet, he wanted in and they both quickly agreed that he and anyone else with us at the bar could get in on the bet as long as they were over 200 lbs by 11/30/18.  This was to prevent me and one other runner from fattening up to join the competition, everyone else involved was well over 200 lbs and didn’t need to prove it prior to 11/30/18.   There will be a weigh in on race day, just for record purposes and fun.

I am trying to figure out who will win this thing.

Fat Jerry won the original fat man Olympics when he beat two other fat guys back in 2008, no time was recorded for the event.  The following year he challenged me to a race where he finished around 6:10 to my 5:59. He is the best natural athlete of the bunch, and always surprises people with his athleticism despite his weight.  He’s a former Marine and isn’t really that much heavier than my other friends, he was really fit when we met him and got the nickname (from Jeff) when he quickly got out of shape. He is most likely to injure himself in training, the most irrationally confident former athlete I know, and is a lot heavier than he was back in 2009. Most recent race, 28:28 5K in March 2016 when he was targeting sub 22 – a lost $100 bet.

Brother in law is the 2nd best athlete of the group, played some rugby post college.  Most career oriented of the group, least likely to really train. Will be less embarrassed than the other two if he doesn’t win. I sense he likes gambling more than competition. Most recent race 30:51 5K in March 2017.

Jeff is the least athletic of the three but has done the most running recently.  He ran the Richmond half in 2:45 and a 33:27 5K (in the middle of a 10K). He is most likely to train for this event which isn’t saying all that much, as he didn’t train at all for Richmond.  I think he’d be the favorite if this was a longer race, he’s willing to suffer but likely doesn’t have the foot speed if this comes down to a sprint in the end.

We were trying to figure out what kind of time would win this, I mentioned that someone will probably have to run a sub 6:45 to beat Jerry. I thought I was giving Jerry credit but he got insulted by this. I said that I probably run 5 laps faster than his 4.   He bet me $200 that I couldn’t fun the mile 1 minute faster than him (which was significantly easier for me than what I offered to him), I accepted the bet knowing that it is highly unlikely that he’ll get in sub 6 shape by September.

Jerry kind of screwed himself by making the side bet with me assuming he doesn’t lose a ton and weight and run a sub 6 minute.  If he does that I’d be happy to lose the money knowing he really changed his physical fitness for the better. Realistically though him trying to stay within a minute of me may cause him to crash and burn, opening the door for either my BIL or Jeff.

The important part of all of this is that none of us drove home that night and my BIL was suffering greatly with a hangover for the 9:45 AM family picture the next day.

Definitely looks like fun. Can't see being able to commit at this time but might be interested in this in the future. We'll see how things develop around that time, might be interesting to show up at some point as "support". But planning a family vacation around that time and planning to hike this the knobstone trail sometime around then as well. (https://www.in.gov/dnr/forestry/4275.htm) Grew up down that way and used to day hike it a lot. Have done the whole trail before but it's been a few years. Planning a multi-day hike not one your your crazy "ultra runs", however! ;)

After totally neglecting any sort of strength work for most of my running "career" and all of the last year or so, I've decided it's time to get that going.  I'm going to start with just some body weight stuff and see how that goes, and maybe work my way into the gym in a month or two.  I know from past experiences that DOMS is inevitable the first time or three, so I eased into it yesterday with just a few air squats, lunges, fire hydrants, push ups, and planks.  And of course my groin, hips, glutes, and high hammies are all aching today, and I'm getting in and out of the car like I just ran a 50 miler.  #######g embarrassing.  But putting it in here anyway for accountability purposes.

@JAA, good luck with your nose job.

:hifive:

Right there with you today.  The 4" of wet snow on the ground aided in my bailing on today's run, the shoveling of it this morning too, but even with just 2 weeks off and an abbreviated workout yesterday my inner thighs are screaming uncle.  Unlike grue my adventures haven't been the trek down though.  It's been standing up.

Just a quick note:

Feel so lucky to have escaped a more significant injury.  The Achilles has been great.  Ran last 2 days and while I could feel it a little during the run, had no pain or soreness or tightness or anything afterward.  That was a frustrating 3 weeks and can now empathize with those going through much more.  Wanting to get out and not being able to is an awful feeling.

Crazy how quickly fitness can come and go.  My run a couple days ago was relatively easy and felt so hard.  Yesterday already felt so much better.  Will probably give today a rest (especially with temps in the 20's with a decent wind) and get back out tomorrow when it warms slightly into the 30's.  I'm increasing the winter gear so that I can plan on running more during this cold weather.  We'll see how big of a ##### I am soon enough.

Naperville Noon Lions Turkey Trot Race Report (5K)

This is the last race of the year for me.  I was expecting to PR since I've been racing well this fall.  I set my PR just this September of 17:45.  I've run this race every year since 2015 because my mom likes to run it.  This is the first time, though, that I've extended my training this late in the year.  6,364 finishers.  A large race for a 5K.  There are tons of young, fast runners too -- high school cross country types and other excellent runners in their 20s.  I had no illusions of finishing near the top.  Winner broke 15:00 and the top 14 were all under 16:00.

Weather was a little warmer than expected, about 30 degrees.  About a 10 mph wind that hit us the most in the 1st mile and near the end.

Mile 1 5:36

I started out fine and was feeling good.  This mile is hard to run the tangents well on because there is a winding divided street and there was some congestion.  Even though I was lined up near the beginning, there were a lot of runners Sanding the start and I had to weave around them later.  I was OK with this split.  I wanted to run the miles under 5:40 but I also knew that the Garmin would have this race more than 3.10 so I'd have to try to keep this up.

Mile 2 5:39

I was still passing people but things had thinned out considerably and the course became much straighter.  I was still feeling pretty good and focused mainly on my breathing which was under control.

Mile 3 5:41

I've felt worse in other 5Ks without question.  But I just couldn't stay under 5:40 average lap pace.  My legs just kept slowing down even though I kept trying to push.

Final .15 on Garmin, 5:32 pace

I got passed right around the mile 3 point which was I think the only time I was passed after mile 1.  He was a younger guy so I didn't care much.

Official time 17:41.  PR by 4 seconds. 42/6,364.  1/281 in AG.  Nobody older than me beat me.

I'm satisfied with this one although, to be honest, I was hoping to do a little better.  My mom finished with a 12 second PR at 30:27 and 2nd in her 71-75 AG.  I thought she would PR since she has started routinely running up to 5 miles instead of 3.  She was disappointed to come in second although I think it's funny that she got crushed by about a minute and half.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
Great way to end the year.  You were practically flying.  1/281 is equally impressive.

I hear you. I really need to find something between trap bar deadlifts and the thighmaster.
Kettle bells, good mornings, squat to dumb bell press, resistance band side steps, and tri-man's favorite - lunges (forward and back).  I also do dumb bell rows while holding lunge position.  Rest one hand against a box then ensure opposite shoulder to foot is a straight line - almost in plank position. I don't have access to one right now, but I'm also a big fan of using the abdutor/adductor but not in sitting position - lighten the load then levitate a couple inches above.  That way I'm in total control of the movement.

Haven't done a dead lift since I transitioned into running as my focus and until I read something to lead me to believe otherwise I don't intend to do one.

I was just doing regular back squats with hardly any weight, and they wrecked me.  I also do single leg RDLs....great for balance.  A trainer told me once that single-leg stuff is important for runners since we're on one leg most of the time when running.

Smart trainer- love the single leg stuff.  I often do things like that during rest periods as a super set to upper body exercises.  Controlled hip swings, single leg squats/box jumps,  - sometimes jumping lunges if I'm feeling antsy.  All about stabilization and body control.  Hadn't considered the RDL Before though.  May steal that.
