Ran a 10k - Official Thread (11 Viewers)

Hmmm...maybe there's a reason I've fallen off the cliff.  Apparently the heat is causing me to by 20%+ slower.  Does anyone know if that applies after you've done some heat adaptation training?
Heat acclimatization is a thing.  It’ll get better.

On that note, it was “53 feels like 53” this morning at 5:37 AM on my run. And 83% humidity, per Klimat.  So I totally feel you guys.

Camping up along the Superior Hiking Trail this weekend with the family, and doing a solo trek up there again for a full weekend in August.  :giddy:

Hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable holiday weekend!
Sounds like plenty of time to get in some good training for Superior in 2 months.  #GetThatStatesQualifier

We keep getting you, me, and @BassNBrew in the lottery, and we're bound to have an FFA cornhole at States at some point in the next few years.

No matter what you do heat will negatively impact performance (so will the cold).  The heat (and the cold) will effect everyone to different degrees - pun unintended.  But if you practice in the heat (and cold) anyway you will perform better than had you not.  If you won't practice in suboptimal conditions then if suboptimal conditions happen raceday then it will impact you more than your competition and put yourself in a position to not meet whatever goals you had set out.

So don't read too much into your output right now. Just keep doing it.  Embrace the suck and it gets better.

9C (48F), feels like 9C (48F) this morning for me at 0440, per the weather station I have in my back yard.  Light wind out of the west.

The struggle is real.

Thanks. All in for burning river in 3 weeks. Anymore course tips would be appreciated

I guess my 500 net calories per day is catching up with me.   Insane fatigue during my hot and humid run this morning.  Had to stop and catch breath while doing what is usually warm-up pace today.   Need to fix this before Sunday.

You need a bone dry July. That course is soaked.  25 miles north we've had a top 5 wettest spring and it's been a lot worse down there.  Large portions of it don't get much sun light.  It's due to trees, but also the steep slopes if they're pointing in the wrong direction.  Then those steep slopes lead to other areas collecting water that may or may not be tree covered.

But if we don't get a bone dry July you may actually be better off with a consequential amount of rain.  The terrain is obviously going to vary throughout, but if my options are ankle-to-calf deep water or mud I'd want as much water as possible.  Sure, soaked feet present their own set of problems, but I'd rather deal with that than what is more likely to happen after running through miles and miles of mud.

I doubt I'll bother going down there pre-race to give an update on the actual course.  The mud and standing water I'm navigating in the much drier parks further north are enough for me.  There is one long section you'll be happy you won't have to deal with with the course change.  It's my favorite one to run, but in dry season's it's off limits in my mind until at least now.  Unfortunately, I may not run it at all this year.

have I told you guys lately that I love this thread? from advice to humor to encouragement to motivation to amazing stories of BMF-dom... this thread rocks!

Buckle distance
That’s what I thought.  💪

That’s one of the handful of Western States qualifiers that’s within reasonable road trip distance from here, so I had given it some thought at one point.  Can’t wait to follow along and hear about it afterwards.

Dang. Not much to like in this post. Recommendation on a type of shoe?

Did 7 miles @130 this morning.  I’m not sure if it was because I was sweating to death or my compression shorts were not fully dried out but HOLY CHAFFING BATMAN.  The run didn’t bother me at all - the chaffing is probably going to limit me to swimming the next 2 days.  Which is ok - did another .5 mile to the pier after lunch.   Eating at a place called Aunt Catfish - I’m hoping they have all you can eat shrimp or I’ll settle for catfish.  Unlike you guys running until you puke I’m going to eat until I puke.  #BEMF  (eating)

Hilly trails are about : thismuch: harder to run than flat roads... and of course I mean boatloads...

At the cabin for the weekend and decided to run the local permanent cross-country course in a park here I've seen but never run. Mile 1 is gently rolling hills through fields. Not bad... Mile 2 is constantly up and down hills in a root infested trail through the woods... it also could use a little better marking. Mile 3+ repeats a decent part of mile 1... except now those gently rolling fields are a PITA on tired legs... then continued on for a nice slow mile on the paved loop.

I really need to do more stuff like this with elevation changes... these were baby hills but they still kicked my butt!

Also was reminded of how beneficial it is to run with better runners when on wooded trails... I was wrapped in a cocoon of spider webs by the end.

And back to a brutal day. 13.1 miles in just under 3 hours. The pain just takes the snap out of the legs. Monday is the big day when the doc gives me an injection in the spine. Fingers crossed all goes well otherwise I might be hanging up the running shoes

We don’t have a emoji thing for this one. Best of luck and medicine to you GB.

Wow ...fingers and toes crossed.

And yes, that is an auto-posted workout on Strava.  Garmin Fenix 5X Plus -

@Zasada's wife:  "I think we should go on a road trip for our anniversary."  (Ignoring the fact that I work for an airline and we can go anywhere in the world, but hey, whatever)

@Zasada:  "Sounds good, we could go to Waterton, Fernie, or Whitefish -- all are under a 5-hour drive."

Wife:  "Whitefish, they have a Target!"

Me: 🙄

[Zasada Googles "Whitefish Trail Race"]

:excited:

Guess who just signed-up for the 37th Annual Big Mountain Trail Run!  Only 6K... BUT... ~600m (~2,000ft) of elevation.  It's like somebody designed a ~5K just for me!!!

No illusions of competing for anything near the top-10 but 50th percentile is definitely doable.  Woot!

...and my work productivity plummets as I scan my usual hikes for a grade that best approximates the race grade...
Who works on the 4th of J.....oh yeah.

Reminds me of one of the not-so-smart fraternity brothers I had, talking about road tripping up to Vancouver for the 4th because “it goes off up in Canada for the 4th!”

Hope it gets you back out there pain free gb.

HFS to the above.

In the office today briefly for some meeting-free time to catch up a bit and then work on race & training calendar.

87/68. Trudged along for almost 3 hours to get a half in. Felt a little better at the start but Mother Nature whipped my behind

Came back from running this morning and looked at the weather. Dew point of 77. I don't remember ever seeing it that high.

My HR was difficult to control towards the end of one hour.

I haven't been keeping up, but I pray you come out the other side in good shape here.

I need to check in on the thread more often. Having to read 4 pages worth in a sitting is looooong.

The only highlight with all this /running/ talk is that Oz is going to do a full IM in Chattanooga. .
