Ran a 10k - Official Thread (1 Viewer)

As an of 1 but when I did this in 2017 I think I left my best on the HM course and my legs suffered the rest of marathon training.  Probably a result of a weak base on my part but I remain unsold on ‘racing’ a half in marathon training for me.  Running it as a long run/progression would be my approach nowadays.
Here here. Maybe my recovery timeline will change with time, but as of right now I simply cannot do this. Even without a taper. I'll be a wreck for at least a week after and clearly at the wrong time. I'm a proponent of training for a half then using that to springboard into a full plan though.

I can usually bounce back from a half marathon in a week or so.  It helps to forgo a long run that week and getting some extra rest before the race.

I've never been able to treat a race as a training run.  My mind can't deal with that.

Here here, to that too. I can not taper for it, but I'm still going max effort that day. I don't know how not to.

Registered for Rehoboth,@pbm107.

Staying at the Admiral Hotel, will get down Friday to try to cop my bib before expo closes.
Cool, I will be at the Breakers Hotel & Suites less than 0.5 mile from you.  I should be arriving Friday afternoon, are you spending the night Saturday?  I'll be there with two old friends and my sister.
Booked a room at Breakers also for Fri night only.  Not sure if the whole family is coming yet or not.

Hmmmmm.  I'm dealing with a cranky ankle so maybe Rehoboth is my play other than Indy.

Decisions decisions
Comparable finish time estimate-wise per FindMyMarathon but Rehoboth has some packed cinder trail miles and maybe wind off the sea to contend with.

Good luck with da crankle.

Zach Bitter (ultrarunner and fellow Wisconsinite) is attempting to break the 100-mile world record this Saturday....indoor at the Pettit Center as part of the "6 Days in the Dome" race.  He's starting at 9am.  The record, set way back in 2002, is 11:28:03 (6:53/mile).  Zach already owns the American record for 100 miles and the world record for 12 hours.  If you're wondering, that's over 363 laps of the 443-meter track.

How many crickets is he gonna eat?

Lots of good running talk in here.

I caught a 40” northern yesterday on my 50th birthday, and had a ton of beers and some great BBQ with my brothers and uncle here in Wisconsin. (Had to bring the BBQ up here from KC of course, since all Wisconsin does is cheese)

Gonna sit in a boat today for 12 hours and then again tomorrow. Should have brought running gear - it’s like 50 degrees right now. lol.

Alas, I shall have more fun hanging with my bros and catching fish.

Congrats on the new house Gian Stenerud!

Just coming in here to vent a bit.

Race tomorrow.  29K trail, ~1,000m of elevation.  Not really excited about it.  It's the "Moose Mountain Trail Race" but the Moose Mountain trail has been closed all summer so that the Province can reconstruct the fire lookout at the peak.  So race organizers had to use a different trail in the area that doesn't go up Moose Mountain.  And that really reduces the appeal to me.

But it's paid-for and I need to do a long Saturday run anyway (haven't done one in three weeks), so why not.  Plus my friend is racing with me, so at least I'll have some company.

And despite trying some piriformis stretches, my right leg is actually getting worse.  Glute pain is now spreading into the hamstring and calf.

I should probably take some time off after the race, but I lose fitness so fast (as seen during my two marathon tapers and post-race recoveries) and I don't want to regress.  I've only had three sub-50K (30mi) weeks all year (all marathon-related) and I love that I have this good habit going.

I could run a PR HM right now for sure, even with the pain, but getting to 30K probably wouldn't be possible due to my butt getting progressively worse as any run increases in duration.

Sitting all day at the office also doesn't seem to be helping.  By the end of the day my right butt hurts just from doing that.

Again, just venting.  Move along, nothing to see here.

@Zasada  I really think you should do physical therapy, especially since it's getting worse. (Or see a sports doctor first and have him/her recommend physical therapy.)  I've done it twice now during marathon training (so I keep logging the miles) and it's helped both times.

Thinking like this is how you end up on the shelf long term.

Agree. This is good advice.

I couldn't get through a couple training cycles without my PT

It's a trap.

Thanks.

I've been really lucky in life, never had any medical issues.  Never broken a bone, never had surgery, never been hospitalized.  So going to see medical professionals is really foreign to me.

The one and only time I have tried running in the past (2011ish), I got bursitis in my right knee after a couple of weeks.  It was bad enough that I was limping visibly.  Took a couple weeks of hobbling around before I finally went to the doctor my wife made me go to the doctor to correct.  Which, incidentally, was just two days of mega-dose Naproxen and I was cured.  But didn't get back to running after that.

So anyways, what I'm trying to say is that going to the doctor isn't something that comes naturally to me.

But I found a sports medicine clinic near my home and just sent an inquiry to book an appointment.

Appreciate the nudge from all of you.  A little nervous, but will report back on how things go.

And yes, I'm a poooosay when it comes to this stuff.

Thanks.

If it makes you feel any better it took me several years of failure and being yelled at by this friendly mob to finally see someone winter 2015/2016. After I did was finally when I broke open the lid that was holding me back and have (**knocks violently on wood**) stayed healthy and knocked out > 2K miles each year since.

Good luck and try to step back. I am struggling with this now and really trying to take the next weeks at a big reduction so to not torpedo the rest of the year.

I think massage and a PT opinion is great advice to consider. I am going to PT weekly for the next couple and will probably keep an every 2 week protocol through December.

I pushed through @gruecd's recent killer workout this morning (4 hills; mile; 3 hills; mile; 2 hills; mile; 1 hill; mile).  With extended wu/cd to get to a good hill, it was 13 miles of challenging effort.

How whipped are you? I'm trying to figure out when to schedule my first attempt at it - or something like it. Thinking about a week from today, but I'm supposed to golf that afternoon too.

Thanks.

You're in Canada - you're already paying for it, so you might as well use it!

Actually, I don't feel that whipped.  In some ways, the long steady runs are tougher from the cumulative fatigue.  This was a trade-off of effort and intensity for the slow slog of a distance run.  My overall pace, oddly enough, was about the same (a little better, actually) as if I'd have just run 13 miles.

But let's see how I feel tomorrow.  (Esp. after a planned 17 miler.)

Went kayaking today with a friend from work.  The friend has 3 kayaks, so we brought my oldest.  Great fun, son got stuck a few times and fell in once. It didn't seem that far from where we parked his truck, drove up and put in, but it took slightly more than 2 hours.

I need to do that more often. Probably not the day before a race.

Some serious BMFery today.  You guys are animals.

Bart, Grue 1.2, Tech-man 47, JuxtmyHR, Big Mac, and TJ UpZaSadADaMountain all with monster efforts today.
Thanks.  Race was fun.  Not significant enough for a RR, but the short version is that it started easy.  My friend isn't great at the uphills and I was all "la di da, this is like a leisurely walk".  Then we hit the turnaround point and he was set loose on the downhill.  Guy is a freaking demon on the downhills.  Which proceeded to wreck my quads but had us passing a bunch of folks.

Don't have the results yet, but it was more work than I planned but also more fun.  Looking forward to next year when the actual Moose Mountain trail is open again and they can use the standard course.

I’ve been running without heart rate data the last few days since I’m using my old watch (Garmin 910xt) while waiting for shipment of a replacement Vivoactive.  I must say, it feels kind of liberating not worrying what my heart rate might be creeping up to on hills and stuff.

Although the new watches are prettier and have a lot of nice new features, I think my old watch (and even my 305 before it) was better at the basic GPS functions of tracking and pace.  I’ve experienced some weird stuff with my two Vivoactives but I fully trust that 910.

I had all kinds of issues with my Vivo which is why I switched over to a Forerunner 735xt. Zero regrets.
