Ran a 10k - Official Thread (6 Viewers)

Heading out now. Looks like sleeping in is going to cost me about 10 degrees. I drank some alcohol Thursday night to celebrate. Skipped my run Friday morning. Ate a pint of diary-free Netflix and Chilled Ben and Jerry’s last night to further reward myself. Now it’s back to the grind.

Alright, alright, alright.

I’m still at home while guys dig out my foundation to figure out what/where the fix is to that part of my water problem. I need me some pint of ice cream and alcohol, my nontraining stress has been bad.

Run or ride later and tomorrow. PT Tuesday as my body, despite a huge volume reduction, feels like ####.

You deserve to celebrate, enjoy

Anyone else up this morning to run?
Nope, wife is working til 2. I got up early and knocked out a couple quiet hours, but the wild animals are now revved up so I think I'm stopping and will try again later. Maybe I can run somewhere in there too. And maybe I should take the week off when they go back to school and just lie on the couch all week.

2nd run this week with #1 son...really want to make this regular with him, but will have to tie it into his upcoming school schedule. ETA..and general punk-assedness

Ok, so woke up this morning at 4:00 am so I could start running at 5:00. Had to be done by 7 because I had a bunch of other stuff going on, plus it was supposed to rain all day. Got out the door at about 5:05 or so. Finally just got back home after all the morning activity at 11:04 am:

1. Ran 10 miles. This was good - haven't hit double digits in a few weeks - just have had zero motivation to run and just overall haven't felt good at all. I'm about 3 miles in and just slogging around and then this just popped into my head: "You are a ####### marathoner you big effing pooooooooosay"  Let's just say my mood was in a much better place after that. What made me think of that was I was thinking about grue and gian and mrs gian next weekend and it just made me realize how lucky I am to be able to run like this.

Rain started coming down the second I hit my driveway. Booyah. :headbang:

2. Farmers Market. Me and the boy donned our rain gear and hit the market. It was pouring. Got our supplies while we handed out soaked dollar bills - reminded me of college where we would hit the strip clubs except now I'm trading cash for taters instead of cash for ta-ta's.

3. Mickey D's for a breakfast burrito and hash browns for the boy.

4. Hockey practice with my daughter. She is ten and hockey is the sport apparently. They serve beer there. Works for me. Did not have one this morning - I'm not a drunk for goodness sake. Popcorn machine was NOT running - major bummer. Told the concession gal she needs to have that thing rolling by 8:00 am. She agreed, and they usually do. No popcorn today.

5. Quik Trip - the better of the chain of Quik Trips in the US for a big fat coke and snacks for the kids. After all, they only ate an hour earlier.

6. Ace Hardware. Time to get some grass seed to over seed with 100% weed free tall fescue. Let me tell you something about grass seed: that Scott's brand you all buy from Home Depot has about 1% weed seed in there. So let's say there are 100,000 pieces of seed in there. That means you are introducing 1000 weeds into your lawn when you seed your lawn with that stuff. Buy the good stuff people. Bam!  :boxing:

Have a good day gents!

Saw the PT for the first time on Friday, came away impressed as he spent a full hour just evaluating me.  He gave me some band exercises for the tibialis posterior and anterior, as well as isometric banded fire hydrants and clamshells.  I'll be back on Monday and he'll evaluate my running gait, otherwise we're waiting on anything more aggressive until we get my MRI results (scheduled for Thursday).

And in the dumbest turn of events ever as a final kick in the balls for 2020:

9/6/20 -- Minocqua weather forecast:  59 degress at 7am (51 dew point) and 69 degrees at 11am (58 dew point)

9/6/20 -- St. Louis weather forecast:  59 degrees at 7am (55 dew point) and 74 degrees at 11am (59 dew point)

Temps drop in StL the day we leave for Wisconsin.   :kicksrock:

if you end up needing/wanting a massage therapist, I can highly recommend one in San Rafael- she's incredible. and an acupuncturist in bolinas... if that's your thing.

eta: and gl with the mri results.

And: after my 14 miler today, first time in a year or two that my pee was rust colored.  Hmm..
Are these regular teenish runs typical for you, tm? Seems like you've been doing a number of them lately

Well, I’m targeting 50 mile weeks, just because.  And due to the heel spur and a generally busy schedule, I get out 4-5 days a week (it’s unproductive to do a ‘short’ run, as it’s likely to cost me the next day).  As a result, I’ve tended to run a lot of double digit runs.     I don’t mind this routine, but it will be much easier when the temps drop!!

Welp. My butt is officially a strained glute.  I'm sad to say that I'm thinking I likely strained it a bit in the FBG virtual races and tried to run through it and it got progressively worse.

Thankfully, this fall is busted with races, so I'm going to try to not worry about it.  I'm seeing a PT and it should get better soon. I am running really slowly as to not aggravate it.

My virtual Boston will likely be run in Boston suburbs on September 13 with a bunch of other Boston runners.  We will run a 3 mile loop around a lake so we will be able to all cheer each other on even though we will have people running 3 hours races all the way to me who will likely run a 6 hour race.

I also signed up for London virtual for October 4. I figure I'll likely never run London so this was my shot.  If I don't feel like doing it, I'm only out $35.

Good to see you guys all chugging along.  Kudos to @krista4 on her 50 miler.  Excited to see Mrs. @gianmarco and her worse half run 26.2 soon.  Hoping the injuries that @Zasada and @SFBayDuck have heal.  Most of all, congrats to @JShare87 for getting the doctorate!

And lets have a moment of silence for @gruecd.

Such a great run today.  25K/900m.  Started 0530, and ran with headlamps for about an hour.  4C/39F.  First couple km with a light jacket, but quickly started to heat up and put it in the pack.  90% of the run in a short sleeve and shorts.  It was glorious.  There were gloves though (@JShare87).  So nice to finish a run and not be a dripping, sweaty mess.  Fitness is still improving, too.

Only downside was the two trail poops.  That vegetarian ground beef is not a slow-moving subway...

Sorry to hear this.  What exercises does your PT have you doing?  I'm doing a lot of resisted lateral monster walks and the like.

Really can’t wait to get out there with my gloves. Saturday morning at 9 am was brutal. 88 and humidity was brutal too. I’m officially over it.

I had to cancel my appointment this past week because of work.  He has me doing very little resistance stuff as it was too sensitive.  I think he will start me up this week on more advanced stuff.  I'll let you know after I go.

Thank you! Let me know if your university is hiring. I figured you could get me in, since you’re the president.

Btw, in case you guys weren't aware, I'm running a marathon next weekend.

I discovered a feature for my watch on Garmin that allows live tracking. I can select up to 5 people to add to the list and it'll text updates on the race. It'll include when we start plus updates every mile with total time, last mile pace, and estimated finish. If anyone is actually interested in that, let me know.

I want the option where we can send you texts during the race.

68 deg, 56 dewpoint.

Oooooooh yes.
Breeze looks pretty favorable also. 7mph from the west and southwest. Should be a crosswind most of the first half, and then REALLY give them a push from miles 13-19. A little headwind until mile 22, which would actually be a nice cool off breeze at that point, before a final push north to the finish for the final 4.2.

Looks pretty good to me.

That was my weather for my run this am.

But yeah...marathon and whatnot

Since @gruecd is on time out, you might want to sign him up. He seems to take an active interest in your running activities

You can sign me up if you want.

Though, my wife did give me the green light to come up and root you guys on. Still thinking about it.

Enought about them already.

Let's get back to what's important- me and my weather.

Damn....that's some perfect race conditions for our gang! Maybe too hot and humid for the banned guy, but otherwise- niiiice!

I know we're rightly all wrapped up in team Yan's upcoming kicking of asses, but I had this thought this morning during my great weather recovery run- what's the goal?

No races on the horizon. What am I hoping to do with my 25-30m/week? Nice to have dropped  long plateaued pounds and heart rate, sure, but otherwise...?.

Then I remembered I opted to defer the NYC 1/2 for March '21. It's a stretch, but I think I'll try to PR that.

In that regard...I need your collective help. I can likely do a 1:49:59 right now if I tapered- maybe push for 1:45. My 1/2 pr is 1:32:41. Is it possible to push these 15 years older legs back to that? Gotta essentially get a minute per mile faster. What's the best plan? Ok...go.

You can definitely do 1:45 provided it's a course you are familiar with and don't get lost and confused.

Want to get faster? Run more. Get up to 40 mpw and do it consistently.  Given your history and your base, if you do that for the next 6 months you'll shock yourself with what you can do. Do base training for next 3 months with mostly easy miles at 40 mpw.  Get in at least one double digit run per week. Build to getting a 14-15 mile runs. After that, do a specific training plan for 3 months leading up to it with speed work to really get you ready.

It's easy if you put in the work. And you'll get way faster.
