What a crazy story. I try to give the benefit of the doubt, but damn. The evidence is....wow. And those that spent the time to uncover it all???????
I read all about the ####### the other day. He's not getting the benefit of the doubt from me. There just doesn't seem to be any evidence that his time is legit. Just think, Ned. His marathon PR is only 2 minutes slower than yours and look at your race history vs. his. It's unpossible. I'm saying cheater.
His Athlinks page: http://www.athlinks.com/athletes/213451360

He cheated.
No doubt. I've got a history of pretty decent race times and I'd be extremely fortunate to run a 3:11 marathon. Out of 20 races he doesn't have a single result under 7 minutes.
Yeah, here's what a 40-something year old BQ qualifier Athlinks page should look like: http://www.athlinks.com/athletes/119757387 :P
Yeah he cheated, if he didn't he would have provided the GPS data from his watch by now. He lives less than 7 miles from me.

Punch him in the face in front of his wife and kids.

how do some of you run at lunch? do you have a shower at work or just be sweaty the rest of the day?

I'd like to start doing that but we have no shower here. maybe just towel off as best I can in one of the stalls?
I only do lunch time runs on days I work from home. Otherwise my runs are after work or after dinner. I wouldn't mind doing a morning run but I'd have to get up at 4:00am to do it and there's not way I'm going to do that consistently. Years ago I would do lunch runs and shower at work. Was nice but I would keep sweating for 30 minutes after I was back at my desk which was annoying as hell.

when I saw this article a few weeks back, I thought it was a lil dooshy that his kids would learn all these great lessons from watching their dad run a marathon. Taking them to the sites of Boston, sure, I'll bite. But asking anyone to spectate a 4hour run is purely self-indulgent.Starting to side with the school on this one.

He cheated. The course format made it easy for him to jump in and out, and as stated - unpossible for him to run that time.

Hang 10 InspiredR, and desiring to get some speed back, I hit the track this a.m. for 8 x 400m @ 1:29 avg. for each. What I really need to do, though, is get in more tempo runs and longer repeats.

Good luck to Duck, gruecd, Ned, Chief, and Juxt!!!

Nice pace!

So the good news is that there has been a change in the weather pattern, so predication for Saturday is low 70s, not mid 80s.

The bad news is that the RD sent out the following, with a picture of a Mountain Lion:

Here kitty kitty. Seriously though! We are proud to announce that both Almaden Quicksilver Park & Sierra Azul Open Space have both been reopened. The 100k & 50k events will continue as planned. We know that most of you are very experienced with the threat of Mountain Lions, Bears, Rattle snakes, wild boar, and lady bugs. Some of you are not. Please see photo for instructions and greeting technique. You should be aware that there are 4 females living on the course. One of them is a little star struck and likes long stare downs and walks along Woods Road Trail. The primary areas of concern are atop El Sombroso (Kennedy A/S), Bald Mt A/S area and Tina's Den A/S (named after one of the Pumas). We have put way too many other exciting features on the course to open a petting zoo in the Los Gatos (The Cats) section of the course, so please use extreme caution when running and thanking volunteers. Please be alert at all times.

Have fun and God Speed, Greg Lanctot (President, Quicksilver Running Club)
No, I will not be sharing this tidbit with my girlfriend, who for the first time in one of my big ultras won't be there to crew for me (her mom is coming into town from Cabo). And I'm starting to re-think my decision to not have a pacer for the final miles....

Good lord. It sounds like you might actually have a pacer, though not one you'd desire.

Juxt, I race a trail HM next weekend in Michigan. I was hoping to pop out and cheer you on ...but my wife had carpal tunnel surgery yesterday, and I need to drive her out to her mom's place for a visit. :kicksrock:

Please wear your heart rate monitor, SFBayDuck. I want see the data when you're running for life. :shark: I will probably look similar to the course elevation map.

Motivation! You can outrun a lion. or at least outrun the other runner.

Upper 60s and humid here this morning. Thank God the race isn't today, because my body isn't ready for this #### yet. :yucky:

Good luck racers. I will be checking on progress and being envious. Still no running.

That story made me look up my athlinks page which I haven't seen in a while. Some of our local races don't make it on there, but it is cool to reminisce and see how well I progressed.

Definitely no cheating here.

I know a few of the people who were involved in "outing" the guy. One of them started a Facebook post that's gotten 400+ comments. I mean, I don't like that Rossi stole a spot from another runner, either, but who has the time to spend all day playing Matlock like that??

Full disclosure time for me. When I reported my 37:57 5k the other day Endomondo screwed up on my phone so it's possible I was really over 38 minutes. It feels good coming clean, especially before someone calls in to question how a fatass like myself was able to run under 13 min miles. Please forgive me.

Bravo, sir. At least you didn't pull a Tom Brady.

Interesting to note my HM PR pace in 2012 was faster than a 10 mile pace from 15 years before. Results don't go far enough back to catch my top 5K times from the early 90's (year, not age ..yet). I blame that on Al Gore.
my HM PR has my name spelled wrong.

no... really. :oldunsure:
Athlinks is terrible. They misspelled my HM PR too - 'Steve C.'. WTF?

GL ultra folks!

Not much going on my way (buying a house, selling a house, bleh). I did get in a #####ing ride yesterday. Started out in a big group and by the first real mile it was down to three - myself and the two tri guys that win all the local races around here. Yeah, that kind of ride. For the meat of the ride hit 240watt average, 261w normalized (and HR at an average of 171 out of 188 max - smack dab on threshold). Nothing like near an hour on or slightly over threshold LOL. Power might be more than half of what FUBAR does on a normal day. :flex:. :P
Pretty sure you have that last part backwards. You'd kick my ###.
When the state TT championships come around we'll have to do it together. I've never done it and it would be a fun time. And watch Olheiser, Toone, and Fisher fly by.

Also, Cheaha is the 17th. That's on the list for me unless the skies open (like last year).

:excited: go team go! Scary to think I did 16 miles less, on the bike, than these guys are running today.

LT build ladder, 2 miles easy, 2 hard, 2/4, 2/6, 2/8, 2/6, 2/4, 2/2 total of 46 miles. Average 20.4 mph. Windy, so it would have been a great day to have a power meter. Avg hr 151, the hard portions were in the low 160s

Good luck to all this weekend.

For me...had a bit of a tweaked knee (no real damage but slowed down the running) and now a case of some nasty bronchitis that has sidelined me the last few weeks.

On the Dad front...3 total tumors right now...has been using this "Optune" device which uses electrical fields to keep cancer cells from dividing and creating another mass (that is the very simplistic explanation). Wears it about 18 hours a day...along with Chemo. That has definitely worn him down in recent weeks and his mobility has gotten pretty bad. To the point he was admitted to the hospital in Milwaukee last monday. MRI showed the 2 older tumors have not grown and the newest one had actually shrunk a bit. So that was the good news. They were worried the device and chemo were not working and the tumors were growing again. He had some fluid built up that they thought may have been the problem...but after a procedure to drain it...his mobility was still not great.

His cognitive abilities are still there which is the other good news. They also did some sort of scan or test on the spinal fluid to determine if there were lesions on the spinal cord that could have affected mobility...but that was clean. They just don't know why his legs are this affected at this point. After 5 days there, he is headed back home today. Supposed to make a decision this weekend whether he wants to continue both chemo and the optune going forward...thinking that if he stops one, maybe the mobility could improve a bit or just quality of life or whatever. Its all left up to my Dad now.

My stepmother has been awesome through all of this as has my dad. Always keeping a positive attitude and, odd to say, but the hospital visit gave her some time to rest as she was not the main caregiver for those 5 days. So right now...we have no clue whats really going on.

Puts a lot of things in perspective and definitely motivates me on lazy days to get out and work out or run to keep myself strong.

Good luck to all runners and Shonuff, fingers crossed for your Dad.

I'm just back from a 10 miler, wore both the Garmin and the TomTom to compare HR data and as suspected I confirmed that the TomTom has been giving me crappy HR data.

Keep in mind that my resting HR is in the 50s and based on a stress test I had done last fall my max HR is around 180, just doesn't get any higer on the beta blockers. Here is my data from today, with TomTom HR followed by Garmin:

8:47 176/123

8:36 175/125

8:41 173/128

8:35 177/130

8:30 175/133

8;33 176/136

8:43 181/132

8:32 176/132

7:54 140/138

7:44 144/141

Overall: 8:27 170/132

Odd that after 8 miles it looks like the TomTom started to get accurate readings. I'm definitely wearing it tight enough. Maybe wearing it with the face of the watch on the underside of my wrist would give it better access to my pulse? Don't really want to wear it like that though. I guess I'll contact them and see what they suggest.

All of that aside my run was f'ing awesome today. Perfect weather, felt strong and relaxed the whole run, pushed a little the last couple but felt like I could have kept going at that pace comfortably for a few more.

Cruised for about 7 miles. Fell off a cliff. Everything shut down. Body, then mind. Finished in 2:00.

On the bright side, no rain or thunderstorms. Humidity was 75% though. Suck index was about 132.

Sorry guys. Pretty much a fail today.

Bummer but bad races happen to all of us. What happened? You go out too fast? What kind of pace were you pushing for the first 7? You wear your heart rate monitor?

Groovin’ in the Grove 5K race report

This certainly isn’t the biggest 5K (only 183 runners this year), but it’s an annual event going on for 26 straight years now so it’s well run and I like it. The start and end are on campus of a small local university but most of the race loops through the adjacent neighborhoods. This is the 3rd year in a row I’ve run it. I came in 8th in 2013 at 19:33 and 3rd last year at 19:02, so I hoped to have a good showing this time. I’m coming off my PR of 18:27 set in March and my goal was to best that meaning I’d have to run half mile splits around 2:58.

Weather was fine. About 60 degrees and overcast. Wind about 7 mph which isn’t bad considering how windy it’s been this spring. It rained last night so there were a few puddles.

Pre-race things were fine although I didn’t sleep all that well, as usual.

This is going to sound conceited, but looking around at the start, I really only identified a few people that might beat me. I even lined up in the front row at the start. Usually I like to be two or three rows back but nobody seemed eager to move ahead of me.

First half mile: 2:55, Average HR 153

Typical fast start by several people, but by the end of this split I was in 3rd. But I’d never been this close to the leader and the escort police SUV. I’m maybe 30 yards back. The lead guy is someone I assumed would be competition. He is an older, weathered tattooed guy but he has a runner’s body (turns out he’s 39 -- younger than me). Right behind him is a younger guy but he’s a little pudgy and I’m surprised he hasn’t dropped back yet.

Second split: 2:53 HR 162

No change in place during this split. I’m feeling OK. Probably as tired as I should be but less tired than I was at the mile mark during my last 5K. I see that I’m around 5:47 at the mile clock which I know is 18:00 pace. I’m still about 20 or 30 yards back from the leaders but I tell myself to not worry about that and just focus on running my race.

To 1.5 miles: 2:57 HR 167

Pudgy guy falls back and I pass him but I, in turn, get passed by a 35 year old who is making a move. I also saw him in the beginning but I’m honestly surprised he’s this fast. He then slows right behind the tattooed lead guy. I’m still a good 20 yards back. Still in third. Another runner catches up to me, a young guy, and starts running right next to me (which i find annoying). About half way through this split I look down at my watch and realize I’ve slowed to above 6:00 pace! I pick it up and ditch the young guy.

To 2.0 miles: 2:55 HR 170

I close the gap to the two lead runners and then pass them into the lead. I look at my watch to check if I’ve stupidly sped up but I really haven’t. They have slowed. I felt very weird passing them thinking it will be humiliating if they pass me back.

To 2.5 miles: 3:00 HR 172

OK, now it’s really hard. The wind is in our faces and there are a few rolling hills. Although I slow a little, so did the other two. The former tattooed leader is maybe about 20 yards back. I glanced back once and can hear his footsteps. The other guy is farther back and I’m no longer concerned about him.

To 3.0 miles: 2:57 HR 175

My quads are starting to burn. There are some turns during this section which allow me to glance back a few times. My lead is about the same but I try to prepare myself to pick it up to a sprint if I have to. With about a quarter mile left I speed up a little in hopes it will discourage the other guy from trying anything.

Last .10: about 0:31? (5:13 mile pace) HR average 177 but 182 as I crossed the finish line

I have enough of a lead still that I know I’ve got it. I try to finish as hard as I can. I know I’m also fine as far as a PR goes. I see the clock tick pass 18:00 which would have been great to beat but, all things considered, no biggie. Passing the finish line is a surreal feeling as I hear the applause from the spectators knowing all eyes are on me.

Final time 18:08. Second place was 18:14. This is the first time I’ve ever won anything in my life, even if it is just a small, local 5K.

Yeah, I wore it. I glanced at the data briefly when I got home. I'll post a full report later.

I didn't go out any faster really than I have been. As a matter of fact, I felt GREAT for the first 7 miles. And then I just crashed. Heart rate was where I needed it to be the whole time.

Not sure if the humidity got me, or the cold I've been fighting all week, or what. Just died.
