Ran a 10k - Official Thread (4 Viewers)

So I checked out the Strava group and am a bit torn. I like the community nature of that group but I really like the integrated training plans on Runkeeper. I might check out the syncing site tapiriik. Anyone else do this?

Great job, Mac!

I ran ten this morning, my longest run since 2014. It capped off a 40-mile week, which is also my best this year. I still have a long way to get back, but I feel pretty good about this.

:lmao:
Short version - there was a 50 mile ride, metric century and century. I ended up winning my own 73.86 mile ride. Slightly longer version - I was all alone on the 2+ mile climb at mile 30 and I think that's where I took the wrong turn. The century lines were yellow, the metric century were blue. I saw a LOT of blue lines (maybe there's a lot of support for cops out here? ) and ended up using Google maps to get back on course.

My hips don't lie, they hurt.

Solved. I ran with Runkeeper and tapiriik nicely synced it over to Strava. I'm Chad in the group. Thanks for the invite!

Sorry I didn't make it. I decided to go to my kid's game. He wanted to make sure I was coming last night and it swayed me. Glad you had a good time, despite the interesting route!

BTW, lots of stuff next year that can be done. The State TT time trial is something I want to try once. There are some pretty good trail races down here to run. Really thinking of doing this next year - the 60 miler is supposed to be epic (no way on the 100 - if it took Toone 8 1/2 hours it would take me an eon or two).

A mountain bike might be my next purchase. I have a free one from westlaw, a jeep POS that I wouldn't take anywhere and should probably get rid of.

My wife is already sick of hearing the things I want to buy - a kayak, a stand up paddleboard, a mountain bike, a tri-bike...

Well considering I just bought my wife a new car today those things look like chump change. She should insta-approve your proposed purchases.

Lots of good MTBs on Craigslist or the like.

 I like the way you think, but the problem is each of those represents more time away from the family. I'd have to curtail training or find a way to bring four kids on each of those. Plus they each would take up more room in our garage, which I already can't park my car in, despite it being a 3 car garage.

Tawnee (endurance planet) read my question about the "century run" (apparently we can't use that term in running), after they blasted me a bit, the answer they gave matches pretty well with what I thought. Depends on goals but not a good idea to do the 100 and two months later the HIM.

Guess I'm glad I already decided against it.

They also insulted how little training I've been doing. :bag:

So now I know what it's like to live the life of SteveC. ;)

Ran a mud run with some friends this morning - we were a part of a group of 40 people from a local gym. Ten teams of four. I've never done a mud run before and considering I was still f'n sore from last week's marathon I just wanted to have fun. I figured we'd all run as a team, but I was told this morning that they were semi competitive and to just go run your own pace.

I took off with our wave and just settled in. I figured if I could get my legs going to MP that would be just fine. After the crowd thinned out and we passed the first few obstacles I realized I was all alone and could see 1st/2nd about 100yds ahead. That turned on the competitive switch. They were 20-something kids so I figured my endurance would eat into them. It did - I passed them on a longish stretch between obstacles at mile 2 (only a 5K race).

Whoa I'm in the lead! It was cool seeing photographers jumping out to take pics "hey here comes the green wave leader". I was passing a ton of people from the wave before and got log jammed on some obstacles. Little did I know one of my teammates was tracking me and snuck past me a few obstacles from the finish. I didn't care enough to try and sprint after him, but dang that would've been cool to win!

This was something out of my element but I had a blast. The ensuing tailgating was friggin awesome. Wish I was still there drinking IPAs!

Did my 20.04 today, and the weather was beautiful. 54 with a dew point of 13 at 7am.

Went out and did the first seven at an easy pace: about 10:04 with a HR at 148. Decided to ramp up and run a MP for 10 if I could. Ended up running the next 10 at a pace of 9:27 with my HR of 162. Had a good stretch in there for about the first 6 where I was at around 9:14 at the same HR. Went back and looked later, and realized pretty almost that whole 10 mile segment was uphill, except for about the last 1.5 miles. Oops. :bag:

Then finished up the last 3 at a pretty slow pace. 11:14. Legs were cooked. I knew this going in. Did not eat well leading up to this run, and with 3 kids soccer games yesterday never had the time to properly nourish myself.

All in all, a good run and I'm really pleased. At this point the taper starts, and then to race day. I think a realistic plan for me on race day is go out at a 9:30ish pace and just see how I feel.

73.46 miles in this week. Coming off my half marathon, it took most of the week until I felt like I was somewhat back to normal. I wanted to get more than 70 miles but didn't care about doing anything at MP or faster. I had to get a new recharger for my heart rate monitor so I didn't wear it until Saturday.

Mon: 7.31/7:55

Tues: 14.42/7:36

Wed: 6.17/7:45

Thur: 10.32/7:40

Fri: 7.30/8:02

Sat: 7.62/7:36/127

Sun: 20.31/7:21/135

3 weeks now until the marathon. I'll cut back a little next week but still want to get in more than 60.

Any input would be appreciated from the peanut gallery. Waffling about how to approach the next two weeks before my half Sunday 10/4. I'm still a little beat from my 10k yesterday, so I'm thinking a recovery 4 tomorrow then off Tuesday. At a loss thereafter. I topped out at 14+ miles 8 days ago, have been in the mid-high 20's per week, and (knock on wood) everything is clicking right now.

My immediate thought is tempo Wednesday and a week from Tuesday (5-6 miles each) with a moderate distance run (8-9) at 70-80% Saturday. Probably doing recovery's Thursday, Sunday, and a week from Wednesday with a shake out run a week from Friday. None of them more than four, maybe five miles.

That look like about the right balance?

:lmao: I listened to that one yesterday, and actually thought of you when they started talking about using the term "century" for a 100M run because I know you've used that here. I never thought it might actually be your question.

But yeah, you better get to running!

Well here's a pic of Tawnee, so.....

And not as fun to look at, but the other host is Lucho who won the Leadman series a couple of years ago (Trail Marathon, 50M Run, 100M MTB, 10K run, Leadville 100M run in about a 6 week period). Before he became an ultrarunner he was a pro triathlete for several years.

Nice week Juxt!

Great long run, Chief.

Ned, face it, you're a fast dude now.

Good week for me capped off with a really hot 20 miler today. I still haven't been wearing my HRM and I don't really worry about pace just effort, so my format is miles / elevation gain.

Mon: 10 / 840'

Wed: 10.1 / 1,693'

Fri: 5 / 741'

Sat: 5.5 / 696'

Sun: 20 / 3,442'

Total: 50.7 / 7,441'

That's a solid 10 hours all on trails, and the first time this year I've had over 7K' in climbing in a week that didn't include an ultra. My quads and hips are tired this afternoon!

So, once upon a time I ran some races. Never all that fast, but I've run 5ks up to a marathon.

Then I had a bunch of kids (#4 on the way) and tore my Achilles and stopped running altogether.

In the last two months, I've managed to get back up to consistently running four days a week, 45 minutes at a time. I'm hoping to run a handful of races next year, leading up to a half-marathon or more.

One thing I really like is a solid training plan that's individualized. I have goal times in mind and specific races in mind and I'm looking for a plan, preferably through a phone app, that handles this well. I've been using Runkeeper but their plans don't seem very amendable (not sure if the upgrade is worth it or not) and I just found My Asics which seems to be in line with what I'm looking for. Any other recommendations out there?
Check out the OP. There's a slew of info linked there.

The best motivation you're going to find is right here - it's a little freaky how motivating being a part of this thread can be. A lot of us are using Strava to log our workouts - it's a cool social kinda site. We have a club over there - https://www.strava.com/clubs/TeamFFA

Speaking of the club - there are a few names I don't recognize in there. Do we have some intruders?
:hey: I'm Craig. Still struggling to get over my hamstring issues. :(
I'm Matt if it wasn't clear who the slow Canadian was...

Looking for advice for a goal for my 1st half marathon (4 weeks away). Today I did an 18 km slow run in about 2:10. This is with my wife who is slower than me, and doing 10 minutes running, 1 minute walking, which is how the running room up here does all it's marathon training. It was the longest run I've ever done, but I wasn't exhausted at the end/didn't "empty the tank". For the race, I'm going to separate from my wife and go a bit harder.

I'm not fast, my fastest 5K time is around 28 minutes. I'm told I will run quicker during the race, would 2:10 be a reasonable goal based on what I've said here? I think that would be a bit under 6:15/km which seems like it would be tough but possibly doable? I feel like 6:30 would be fairly easy and 6:00 would burn me out too quickly (does my metricness make this too difficult;) ).

I'm too drunk to convert km to miles. Good luck on your race.

So why exactly is 100 miles not a century, regardless of sport?
When runners think way too much of themselves. Like hipsters. And VW owners. And guys who vape instead of smoking a real cigarette. Not to mention the twits who spend 4.00 for a PBR at the bar when they can could have bought a sixer for 4.00 not even ten years ago.

People are dumb sometimes. 100 is a century in this life, in past lives, and in future lives.

 Or it's just a cycling thing. Kinda like spandex uniforms, shaving of the legs, and gathering in groups of 25 or more at coffee shops.

Now I'm going to go put on my trucker hat, buff, and drink an IPA at the trail head.....

Been absent for a while, just catching up. Nice work as always fellas.

Finally over several nagging injuries (I think).

Hiked back to back fourteeners this weekend. Pretty brutal. Gained an amazing respect for the ultra runners that tackle these elevations running, not that I didn't already have a ton for them.

Volume (mileage, KM don't count) is king - given that your longest run so far is ~11mi, I'd play this cautiously. You'll most certainly be able to finish it, but I think 2:15 might be a more reasonable goal; 2:10 isn't totally out of the question.

If there a link and a time for this Endurance Planet answer? Sounds like it would be good for a few chuckles at FUBAR's expense.

Holy crap you guys log some miles. I see 6 runs over 10 miles today among a group of just 20 people. Crazy.
It was a pretty big weekend for distance over at the strava. Juxt and Duck with 20 milers and myself with a PR long training run of 22. Ran another PR in weekly mileage with 68.6.

But now I'm sick. :X :(

ETA: Looks like Chefs had a 20 miler as well...it should have been on the strava clubhouse though.

Remember when I said I was a creature of habit? :oldunsure: Well, this summer couldn't have been a better example of that, but I'm hopping back on the horse. We have a little semblance of normalcy back in our lives, but it's still not perfect. I don't know how far gone I am or how far I regressed and I'm not sure the best way to figure that out, but I start back this week. I'm not sure what else to do, so I think I am just going to start the C25K program all over again. Wish me luck, I'm gonna need it.

http://www.enduranceplanet.com/atc-treadmill-test-can-predict-marathon-time-does-kinesio-tape-work-building-miles-for-ultras-and-more/

And answers to YOUR questions:

-Follow up on our last podcast and letting your race choose you: Damien asks, Shouldn’t that be true for the distance too? What about Tawnee going from marathon to ultra?

-Training for a 24hr and trying to figure out a training plan for it, including two-a-days, long runs, etc. Lucho gives his advice and some concrete numbers.

-Recently adopted MAF training , now doing Maffetone’s 2 Week Test, and it has been rough! Feeling like crap and running even slower. Is this normal? Carry on and stick it out?

-Transitioning from just triathlon training to ultra training as well. How to balance the three sports with an added emphasis on running if looking to do a 50k run, 100-mile run and 70.3 triathlons int he next year?

-Is the 10% rule crap? And an old post from Tawnee on why the 10% rule is outdated.
Her discussion about the 10% rule stemmed from my question.

took yesterday off. swam 50 minutes this mornign then ran 6 miles in vibrams. Slow but felt mostly smooth.

which reminds me - these riders, for a cycling event, have no idea how to actually ride.

I get it, drafting is completely accepted in these events. No problem. I didn't do it but mostly because of circumstance - one guy did draft off me for ~15 miles, and I planned to change places before my visor broke.

But many groups were either 3 (or sometime more) wide across the road or individuals were riding in the left side of the lane, not passing anyone, just staying there.

Garmin Guys, did they do away with the classic look over the past few days? I had my profile bookmarked on the classic site as I like it better than modern. When I hit the book mark today, it took me to a log in screen and then on to modern. I looked all over and do not see an option, now, to view activities in classic.

When I hit the book mark today, it took me to a log in screen and then on to modern. I looked all over and do not see an option, now, to view activities in classic.
I have both sites bookmarked and the old one still works.

Modern is fine after you get used to it. Stop being an old fogy and accept change! ;)

Thanks!! Based on your reply I logged out and back in and hit the bookmark again and it took me back to classic. I can't stand modern, except for seeing the sleep data from the VivoActive.

Yeah, I used to go back to the old one at first but now I don't even bother. The modern one works fine.

I still use the old one for the progress summary reports, for the weekly, monthly, and yearly data. From there you can access the classic look.

Bunch of 2-timing bastards in here. :hot:
Serious question, can I pull all my Garmin activities to Strava (going all the way back to 2009)? I haven't toyed with Strava all that much.
Seems most of the fitness apps talk to similar but different apps but won't talk to each other.

I can link MyFitnessPal to Runkeeper to Fitbit through the apps themselves. But I can't link Runkeeper to Strava.

BUT, I found this website. You go in, hit the sync button and your different apps align. Garmin, Strava, Runkeeper, Endomondo, all on there.

That's a pretty cool site. Looking at their FAQ, it looks like it will sync your historical data too.

Ran an extra 1/4 mile so I didn't get robbed this time. 93 + 68 = 171 suck index. October 3rd is going to be a cake walk.

Pace dropped every mile but under the circumstances, I am okay

Why do you choose to run right in the heat of the day? You a sadist?
Close. A former Marine. "The more we sweat in training, the less we bleed in battle."

No, to be honest I didn't realize it was that hot. It felt good when I first got out there, it surprised me when I looked up the temp and dew point when I got back.

I don't mind it, I like sweating, it just limits my distance now because I can only carry about 20 oz of water and I go through that in about 2 miles at this heat. So today I ran 2.2 out and back, stopped at my house refiled my bottle then ran another 1.25.

One thing to consider is that you'll get better quality workouts in less extreme conditions. If cooler temps would allow you go further and faster, don't you think that would be beneficial?
