Ran a 10k - Official Thread (5 Viewers)

RB Marathon: Nicholas Chadick - 10 Mile in 1:11:40. Pace 7:10. Est: 3:07:54. ETA: 10:14 AM. Presented by Rehoboth Beach Running Company

15 sec behind his pace band, hopefully he is feeling ok.

It's been a disappointing season for Boston qualifiers.  I thought we'd have 5 at this point but we've only had 1.  It seems like it has been bad luck with injuries and stuff other than commitment or ability.  I hope everyone keeps it up and tries again this winter or spring.  I'm definitely still planning on running Boston 18!

I plan on signing up for my spring marathon at the end of the month.  Just want so see if I can handle some training first before I signup.  If all goes well I am in for Boston 18.

Sucks for @Ned but he is still an amazing rock star.   His positivity is infectious.

Although I'm completely bummed he didn't BQ today, I'm thankful he had the smarts to back off and not try to be a hero.  If he had grinded forth full steam could have resulted in a serious injury that would have put him on the shelf.

All too often, we are reminded the marathon distance is not something easy or automatic.  One can put the training in and the smallest thing can derail the race.

I hope @Ned picks himself up, dusts himself off, gets healthy and gets back out there.  He has the BQ in him.  We all know this.

This group is a serious source of inspiration. I thought about y'all sweating me today and it was a big motivator, but unfortunately I couldn't hang today. I don't feel like rehashing it but I owe you a recap... This is what I texted to SC, pbm, and comfortably numb.

"Achilles is toast. Was on fire at ten. I stubbornly kept going. By 13 I couldn't push off. Backed it off for a mile and realized I was just dragging my leg forward so I shut it down at 14. Had to jog to 19 to find Erica."

The disappointment really fricken sucks, but I'll be back. I'm committed to Boston no matter what at this point.

Incredibly wise to recognize the situation for what it is, than to push yourself into a more serious injury.  That sucks bad, but I love the above.  Can't wait to follow your next go at it!

Yup, marathons are tough.  I think I've mentioned my count, that in only 3 of my 11 have I been in relatively positive spirits at the end.

And yup, Ned has it in him ...for sure.

So sorry, Ned!  I'm sure that was tremendously frustrating ...struggling for a few miles, then having to jog on after the shutdown. :kicksrock:

:sadbanana:

I know the feeling @Ned all too well. It completely sucks to DNF but that is/was the smart move. Hoping that decision speeds your recovery and we can get ready for spring time when we all start racking up the BQ's.

DUCK'S IN!!!   :pickle:

Selection #122.  I have it live on FB and got to see our guy spring onto the stage.  Very cool.

Congrats, SFDuck!  So happy for you.

Drawn almost exactly halfway through...what an agonizing wait that must be.  Can't wait to follow his journey there.

Oh and Duck, you should quickly go scratch your name off those raffle tickets and write me name on them.

Thanks fellas!  They even pulled my name again about 10 picks later, guess it was my year!

My boy Surf got in again, too. It's gonna be a hell of a year.

Oh man, just checked it. What a bittersweet day.

Ned, sorry to hear about this day. I know how hard you worked for this. Just feel sick about it for you.  :(

Duck, great news for you! I know this is what you have been working so hard for, and wishing for, and training for. So happy for you.

AWESOME news Duck!!!! Really stoked for you man!!!

Side note, local friend of mine got in as well, Tin Ha #106. 5' nothing but can run all day.

Feel bad for ya Ned but I know you got this.

Sorry man, now you'll just have to come out and crew!  It's good karma for future lotteries.
 tell us more about this crewing.

Stoked about your selection.  It's funny when I'm this excited for a guy I've never met.

Oh man, sorry Ned. Smart move bailing, you'll be back. Hope you're not too beat up.

On the other end of the spectrum, really ####### happy for you Duck!

@Ned, really sorry today didn't go your way.  Sucks to have the fitness to reach that goal but have something else get in the way.  Looking forward to the next one and seeing you get that BQ.

Not great quality as it's my phone recording the video showing on my iPad, but here's the clip that Tri was watching.  It's cool for me to see, because I basically blacked out for a minute.  My girlfriend said she didn't even hear them say my name after the "from Novato, California....".  But I did, and we stood up and hugged, I gave her a kiss, then ran up to the stage.  I was backstage for a couple of minutes watching, and I tried to text my buddies and parents and my hands were shaking so much I just gave up and put my phone away.  And the room must have been super dusty because my eyes kept watering.....

Thanks for the thread title change Ned, as always I'm humbled by all the support from you fellas, only two of whom I've yet had the pleasure to meet!  But I hope that changes this year, details to come for anyone that's interested in a trip to beautiful Lake Tahoe the last weekend in June.....

Very happy for duck!!!!!!

Ned you will be back. You are one of the most positive and supportive guys I have never met.

Ahh, with 2.5% odds there's nothing to be sorry about.  I'd love to have had a horseshoe up my ###, but I'd also have felt incredibly guilty to get my lone ticket pulled when there are those such as yourself (in their 4th, 5th, and 6th years) just dying to get into this race.

Therein lies the rub...I'm likely not a 100 mile mainstay, but WSER is stuck in my head as something I just have to do.  So, a 100 miler this coming year it is I guess. And the year after...and the next year...and the one that follows.

But man, I'm so pumped for you.  Time to get after it.

Did three miles in Nigel's hokas.

They made me feel fat, old and out of shape. Stupid Nigel. Stupid shoes.

(Can't wait to get back out there in them)

Really sorry to hear about the race, Ned.  I think the obvious lesson here is that Liverpool sucks.

Amazing to hear about baldy... Congrats!

So much for taking it easy getting back for me...

Guy in my neighborhood gave me a free entry to a 5K trail race tomorrow morning. Based on last year it could be a pretty weak field though...might be a decent race to cherry pick a "W".
Smile 5K

Typically when I've tried to cherry pick some cross country high school kid shows up and ruins everything. I've finished 2nd quite a few times in 5K in recent years and it's been to a teenager every time. So of course this race would come down to me and a 16 kid who runs XC.

The course was a fun little trail that has a bit of sand and some little rolling hills. I had run this trail many times but never at any real speed. Guessing before race that the best pace I could probably handle was 20-30 seconds slower per mile than my 5K road time.

The youngin toes the line and sets the pace. He takes off pretty fast and I make the decision to keep my distance and see if he comes back to me. About a half mile into the race I see that he's got about a 10-15 second lead on me but he's not pulling away. I take this as a good sign. I'm not feeling great but considering how little I've run in the past 6 weeks, I'm doing alright. At the end of the first mile I had closed the gap between me and him to about 5 seconds.

Mile 2 I can tell he's fading but make the decision to hold back my move until I can fully commit. I sit on him and let him do the pacing. Honestly slowing down is alright by me at this point. We hit the turn around and I'm right on his heels and we are about 30 seconds ahead of 3rd and 4th place. I can tell he's really pressing to keep the lead around the end of mile 2 and that's when I decide it's time to go. I make a strong move and grab the lead. It works and he doesn't even give chase. He hangs on for about a quarter mile but then suddenly the foot steps behind me go silent.

Mile 3 I ain't letting go of this lead. I do my best to keep my form up and keep it rolling. Hit the tape at 19:41 (had the course a bit short). XC finishes a distance 2nd +54 seconds. I broke the boys spirit apparently.

So do you what's better than setting a PR? WINNING. Getting my 2nd ever win was pretty damn fun. It's cool when racing against the clock becomes secondary to racing against other runners. I gotta do this again.

Awesome job @Hang 10:thumbup:

Guessing the ankle is feeling good.  :)
Wow can't believe I didn't think to mention my ankle. Yeah, happy to report that running at speed didn't seem to bother me at all yesterday. I can't say it's fully healed but it's certainly trending in the right direction.

I got in 10 miles including my warm up and cool down, bringing my total for the week to 42 miles. Pretty happy with that.

I ran nine miles in glorious 55 degree light rain this morning.  I love rain runs. I especially like the stares from onlookers.

My longest run in 11 months.
