Ran a 10k - Official Thread (2 Viewers)

Nah - I'm in a great place right now.  First time since April in which I have a goal that I'm working towards and I'm stringing together a series of quality workouts.  This 10K isn't the goal though.  Not trying to accomplish multiple goals at once is something I'm trying to get away from and I think this is my first test.  The biggest issue with those conditions is maintaining warmth.  Your body has to work harder and your immune system becomes more inefficient when it's not.  And I'm already battling a cold.  So doing a race that starts and ends on a pier in lake erie with no businesses around that will be open for hours and a car that'll be parked about a mile away amidst 40some degrees temps, rain, and high winds is a recipe for avoidable problems later.  An entertaining read? Sure, and if it were my goal race I'd say #### it and run like that thunder snow sleet hail storm half in 16.  Then I'd just prepare to shut it down for the rest of the weekend and hide under blankets chugging soup to try to normalize again.  It isn't the goal race though.  And I then need to turn around and taxi my wife to and from an out-of-town marathon.  It'd be nice to check both the 5 mile and 10K box this fall, but if I only get one then so be it.  So if the conditions don't change then I'll just tempo Friday and not tempt any of those potential issues.  Juice vs. squeeze, homey.
Glad you’re in a good place. Hope you picked up on my sarcasm.

What are the absolute best headphones you can get for running.  Preferably something I can download music on (or even get radio stations) without having to keep my phone on me.  Looking for comfort more than style

No experience with these but looked around since I didn’t realize this was a thing.  I have had bad luck with the wireless headphones I’ve tried over the years either with pairing or charging.  Anyway these look cool.

Samsung Gear IconX (2018 Edition) Bluetooth Cord-free Fitness Earbuds, w/ On-board 4Gb MP3 Player (US Version with Warranty) - Gray - SM-R140NZAAXAR https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07642QKFS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_bTNXBbSGXRQFF

Very bad reviews on those.

Sony Walkman.

I think all these older age group records are going to be smashed in coming decades.  I don't think the running community at large even thought much about this stuff decades ago.  Now I'm sure there are tons of older runners who are reading such articles and are really motivated by it.

When I was looking at her Athlinks page, I wondered if you've run the same races as her.
Now that I look at it we keep picking different years to do some of the same races.  It's probably also a function of my decreased racing.  When I was doing 10-12 per year in 2014 and 2015 that's when I'd see her.

the link says 'ludicrous' which I think is faster than ridiculous.
It's funny but I kind of expect that there should be 70-year old women who can do this.  Although the fact that men didn't let women run in major marathons until 1972 probably plays a huge role.

Yup!  When I started my racing career some 35 years ago, we had no idea how other runners were doing.  Race results often were a mailed postcard with our time, place, and AG placement.  With the ability now to find all the information on-line, it creates the motivation to pursue specific goals and records.

Fixed.

Talking about how things were in the past always makes me wonder how we'll look back on today's tech in 20yrs or so.

For me it's about what stays in my ear or not.  I use Yurbuds exclusively.  If I wanted waterproof I would go with the Sandisk Clip sport plus and some bluetooth yurbuds.  Right now I use a regular Clip and some wired yurbuds.  I have to bag the player to keep from sweating it out (I sweat worse than Grue).

Nobody sweats more than me. Guaranteed.
There's a reason I said may.  But I'm significantly worse than literally everyone I run with here.  They get so irritated with me because they're gasping for air and I'm fine at usually a faster pace, but they're only sweating normally whereas I'm a greasy, oily mess.  I have a trunk full of towels in both of our cars, so whenever I run then have to drive I'm not swamp ###'ing up our cars too.  There's a reason my wife moved our running clothes bin to the laundry side of the basement.  The back of the laundry side of the basement.  And around another corner.

You just described what I need for a half mile warm up.

I've recorded sweat loss - I can do bit better than 1lb./mile lost in the summer.  If you boys beat that -

The wife makes me sit outside for about 10 minutes to cool off and not drip sweat everywhere.   Have to hang sweaty clothes separately.

Just wrapped up filming that show for HGTV.  Luckily they opted out the scene with me running, but we did have to do an interview scene.  We had to break twice cause I started sweating thru my shirt.  They hit it a hair dryer then threw it in the freezer for 5 minutes.

Don't know when it airs, but I'll let y'all know.

In week 6 of the Higdon HM plan.  Still feeling good.  Glad I choose the plan that included speed work.  I've never really done it before, but its become enjoyable.  Had a 40 min tempo run yesterday.  Ran those 40 minutes around 8:40.  HR stayed 149-159.  That suggest anything to you HR nerds?  Did I leave some on the table?  It felt moderately comfortable.  I think I could have maintained that a good bit longer.

I keep some of those foil blankets from races in the car and use them to lessen how bad my car is.

Also, the HAHA like thingy should be a picture of Nelson from the Simpsons.

SI is 63 (you read that right) here outside of Idaho Springs, CO.  The lodge I’m staying at is at 10,500 feet.  It’s cozy.

Our mountain bike group had been doing night rides for a few weeks, but I haven't been able to go.  My brother has been pestering me to go, so I finally went last night.  Using bright ### lights on your helmet and bike to light the trails, it is an absolute blast.  I had more fun in the dark than I did in the daylight.  I don't know what it was about it, but man I had an absolute blast last night.  I even set a few segment PRs in the dark.

It also helped that my energy was amazing; We rode 17mi and I felt like I could go all night.  My fitness is definitely coming back slowly.  That feeling is motivating as hell.

After losing three weeks to this stupid knee problem, I was extremely excited to start running again this morning. Spent my little vacation foam rolling, icing, etc. trying to make sure this wouldn’t be an issue ever again. The result? It took all of 0.5 miles for the knee to start hurting again.  :wall: Back to the doctor I guess.

last time i rode a bike in the dark was drunkenly, in the AM, in a state park.  bird flew right in to my face. managed to keep the bike upright and not fall.

probably my greatest athletic achievement.

Are you going to a regular doctor or one that specializes in sports medicine?

I'm finally starting to stack some workouts - have run 13 of the last 20 days, and after this morning am now up to 5 runs per week, which is my goal.

I've run 21 miles since Saturday, and plan to increase the weekly mileage to 30 by mid-November.

Weight seems pinned at 200 lbs, which has been disappointing, but I think that will start to come around with a month of 25-mile weeks. It's still baby steps, but this is the first time I've put together three straight weeks of weekday morning runs in 7 years. I am optimistic (hopeful) that the switch has been flipped and that I can keep it going after being glued to the couch for so long.

Is it weird that I'm more scared about running fast at the relay this weekend than I am about attempting a marathon PR in a couple of weeks?  :scared:

Went to a regular doctor for my first appointment, and he said he would refer me to a specialist if it’s still an issue after a couple weeks - so it looks like that’s my next step.

I laid low for three weeks to let my inflamed hip settle down (and to wait out a chest cold) ...when  I finally ran a few miles two days ago, the gait felt very foreign to me, and I can feel some pain in the hip area again.  Looks like I, too, will need to see a sports doc to determine what it is.

LOL.  Hey, my wife is running the Green Bay Hot Cider Hustle half marathon.  You going to be there?
no :( not running it anyways. might pop out and check it out since the route goes near my house, though.

you going to run along with her? wait around the start/finish? somewhere along the course?
