Maybe a 5K is more up your alley. ?Thanks guys. Ran like a ####### idiot and went out way too hot, suffered through the last 10 miles, but hung on for the massive 23-second PR. You'd think I never ran a damn marathon before.
Congrats on the sub 3 and PR, considering how low your HR was the first half of the race it is understandable that you ran a bit quick early on.Thanks guys. Ran like a ####### idiot and went out way too hot, suffered through the last 10 miles, but hung on for the massive 23-second PR. You'd think I never ran a damn marathon before.
Awesome job grue. Thanks guys. Ran like a ####### idiot and went out way too hot, suffered through the last 10 miles, but hung on for the massive 23-second PR. You'd think I never ran a damn marathon before.

Almost a true Couch to HM. Congrats, GB, well done! Time to build.....2:10:22
Oh yeah!
Welcome back!Been a way from this for a while...various injuries and a schedule that has not been conducive to running (dealing with a now HS Freshman and ridiculous competitive marching band is nuts). Starting slowly to get my big butt back into gear...don't think I will run many races...but want to get back to where I had been as far as pace and running shape.
Come back and see grue is still killing it.
Congrats.
A long road ahead being older this time around. Ankles finally feeling normal, sinuses clear and no surgery for them in sight. A small break between marching band season and winter drum line for my son will hopefully get me into a rhythm before the kids activities take over our lives again.Welcome back!
Welcome back. Time to sign up for another 42 races.Finished. Meh time, but way faster than the first 10k I ran. Got pretty emotional out there. A lot of stuff pent up that needed to come out. I’ll give a better play by play later after some drinking at EPCOT. It’s nice to back after my 5 month hiatus.

A lot of guys here go for a run while their kids are doing their activities. Unless, of course, you love watching...A long road ahead being older this time around. Thanks. Scaling it back next year. No way am I doing 20 again. This year was calmer with a projected 12. Not going to burn myself out again.Welcome back. Time to sign up for another 42 races.
Great race!

A little more detail... first about me for those that may have missed it - I turned 48 years old 4 weeks ago tomrrow. I'm like 5'11.5" after a little old man shrinkage and currently weigh about 223.5 - by all accounts officially obese still right now. I've lost about 9 pounds in Octobers so.. I haven't been running or even working out at all until about 7 weeks ago, then I rolled the crap out of my ankle and basically had 4 weeks to get ready when the swelling mostly went down. The longest run I've done in as long as I can remember was 2 Saturday's ago and was 8.7 miles at about an 11 min/mile average. I did run a 5 k at a 8:42 pace earlier this week. That was fun and went faster than I expected. All things considered, I'm pretty happy with the results. Looking forward to doing another one in the future to see what I'm capable of.

Wtf? This sounds like a country song. What race?Glad everyone had good races. Mine not so good. Lost a Bose earbud. Missed the final cutoff 2 miles from the finish by minutes. Stuck my truck and have been waiting on a tow truck for 2 hours. Truck is about 2 feet from a 1000 to 2000 ft drop off. Can’t see the bottom where it would stop but I think it’s in another county. Trying to enjoy the 50 miles views
Congrats again! When will the next race be? Are you going to run through the winter?I'm sure I've got at least 10 minutes in me - totally want to break 2 hours next time out!
I've signed up for a 5K "series" with a friend of mine - first one is in 2 weeks, 2nd one in mid December, 3rd on in early January - figure those will keep me moving during the winter. Plan for winter is a combination of running when nice enough and going to the "crossfit fitness" classes at work - they are typically cardio centric workouts - lots of assault bike, rowing, running, etc.Congrats again! When will the next race be? Are you going to run through the winter?
Indy Mini would probably be a good choice.I've signed up for a 5K "series" with a friend of mine - first one is in 2 weeks, 2nd one in mid December, 3rd on in early January - figure those will keep me moving during the winter. Next half will be in the spring - there's like 4 races relatively close to me between mid April and mid May - I'll sign up for one of those. Not sure which one yet.
That's one of the options and a high chance I do that. There's a couple people at work that have said they will sign up to and be kind of an accountability group / running club which would always be good to have. I've actually been a volunteer for that one a couple times. Between seeing it and talking to others, the only problem with it is that if you aren't in the front, then you are running with 8 billion of your closest friends and the amount of bobbing, weaving and dodging you do can be a bit of a pain.Indy Mini would probably be a good choice.
Haven't seen you post here in a while. Maybe just missed them. Great to see you are at it.Glad everyone had good races. Mine not so good. Lost a Bose earbud. With your backstory and limited training, the race you ran today was seriously outstanding. A 2:10 is one helluva start to a running career. Can’t remember if you have a background in running from your younger days, but your time was really, really good.A little more detail... first about me for those that may have missed it - I turned 48 years old 4 weeks ago tomrrow. I'm like 5'11.5" after a little old man shrinkage and currently weigh about 223.5 - by all accounts officially obese still right now. I've lost about 9 pounds in Octobers so.. So, all that said, I don't have full mile splits - my phone was registering a crappy gps signal at the start so I tried changing from strava to map my run to see if that would help. I also have on my fitbit HR and strava linked up with that but mapmyrun registered it as a 8.5 mile run and strava/fitbit only called it 11 miles - I DID THE WHOLE 13.1 PEOPLE!
As a note - before I hurt my ankle, I was wanting to see how close to 2 hours I could go, maybe break it. With then only a month basically to get ready, I decided that I'd be mostly satisfied with anything under 2:30 and recent runs put anything under 11 min/mile as the goal.
So, on to the race... I was in 'wave 3'. It was mostly empty when I got to it so I walked up toward the front of it but not all the way - new there would be people pushing more. Basically I was right just between the 2 guys with the 2:05 and 2:10 pace sticks for the half. By the time the fancy people go off and the first 2 waves are gone, it's about 8:10 when we are starting. Countdown goes and we are off. I settled into a comfortable jog - didn't want to do anything stupid but didn't want to be a chicken either. More people are passing me than I am passing and felt a little bad for being up as far as I was but I'm more or less keeping up with the majority of the people near me.
First mile marker arrives, look down at my stopwatch and it's about 9:45+/-. Definitely faster than I planned but didn't feel like I was doing anything crazy. 2nd mile marker arrives and I'm still under 10/mile. 3 - same and I'm feeling great. By this point mapmyrun had already gone a little flaky with its updates so I just ignored that little looked at the running clock on my wrist periodically.
Mile 4 and the math is still easy - clock read like 38 something. Mile 5, feeling strong. Mile 6 and then the 10K scoring marking and I'm on cloud nine. Semi-official 10K split online says 1:01:37. By this point I've been able to have a couple brief chats with folks, love the energy of the crowd and just floating along feeling great. Hit mile 7 and then the split between marathoners and the less crazy folks for the half and all is good. Couple of us halfers yell out wishing the full folks well and I crack a joke about the smart people obviously took the correct turn - I'm so clever!
Mile 8 clicks off and now the math is harder cause, you know it's over an hour and all so calculating to make sure I'm still under 10/mile is getting harder but I'm on pace. Mile 9 hits and I happily note to myself that we are about 70% done and feeling good. I also note to myself that I'm now in uncharted waters and further than I've run in who knows how long. We get to the 10 mile marker and I remark to those lucky enough to be near that it's now "just" a 5K to the finish. Shortly after that things started getting a little tougher.
About the 11 mile mark my breathing isn't as smooth and I'm starting to have to labor a bit but I'm still basically on pace. But there's a kid - probably like 15 that was in front of me, then walk and I passed him, then he went back in front, etc. about this point I am passing him as he's walking again and I look over and something like "come on, we've got this" and he picks it up and runs with me for awhile. I figure he should be thinking "that old fart shouldn't beat me", I'm thinking some combination of "come on kid, you can do it" and "I'm not letting this little turd beat me!" I left him behind a bit later when he walked through a water station and I just kept moving. If he ever passed me again, I didn't see it...
That said, about the time I passed the 12 mile marker I decided that 1.1 miles might as well be forever. At this point I had to concentrate a bit to keep my feet moving at pace. I actually had been ahead of the 2:10 pace runner for a long time. He caught/passed me about here and I used him as motivation to keep myself moving. Not sure if he was just ahead of me or behind me but I crossed the line, stopped my personal watch at 2:10:15 and was totally ecstatic. Got my official time from the tent as 2:10:22 and I'm still kind of waiting on it to sink in.
It was some combination of both inspiring and depressing to have a couple of marathoners pass me in the last 1/2 mile of the race but those guys are nuts. Pretty sure my official time is faster than the fastest full finisher but just barely if it is.
I'm sure I've got at least 10 minutes in me - totally want to break 2 hours next time out!

#### man. I guess you could have torn a torn calf muscle (paging thread Doctor). Get another pro to check you out. Good luck J.Is it possible to tear a muscle in the lower outside of the leg? There is no way I am dealing with a shin split here. I cannot walk without excruciating pain. Lower leg is the size of a damn telephone pole. Any thoughts?
Thanks. Nice work. I'm pretty sure you had to have run past me near the finish - I was standing right at the final corner about the time you would have been finishing. Was trying to see if I could pick you out and give you a little personal cheer around that last corner but I missed you. Not sure what name, if any you had on your bib but was trying to watch at about the time I knew you would be coming through.Congrats!!!
I was basically an average XC and middle distance track runner in high school. 30 years ago I ran an 18 minute 5k and a 2:03 half mile. ?With your backstory and limited training, the race you ran today was seriously outstanding. A 2:10 is one helluva start to a running career. Can’t remember if you have a background in running from your younger days, but your time was really, really good.
Judging by your posts today, it is clear you are proud of yourself. And you should be. And everyone here is proud and happy for you as well.
You did awesome.
I do not think it is my calf. It is my lower left leg on the outside. The pain is on the front and outside of my leg. It also hurts where my foot meets my ankle, front and center of my leg. I just find it hard to believe it’s a shin splint.#### man. I guess you could have torn a torn calf muscle (paging thread Doctor). Get another pro to check you out. Good luck J.
I'd go see someone for sure. Just start with an orthopedic physician. Is it possible to tear a muscle in the lower outside of the leg? There is no way I am dealing with a shin split here. I cannot walk without excruciating pain. Lower leg is the size of a damn telephone pole. Any thoughts?
I was wearing all bright orange....singlet, arm warmers, and shoes. I had “Chad” on my bib.Thanks. Nice work. Yes, probably. I wore sleeves yesterday.JShare87 said:Watching the NYC Marathon. Why do some of the elites where the arm sleeves? Is it because of the cold? I could swear I’ve seen some wear them when it’s not cold out?
Just 1.Yes, probably. I wore sleeves yesterday.
PS: no way the lead women can hold this pace
