Ran a 10k - Official Thread (4 Viewers)

Weather app this morning reported it was about 22 when I was getting dressed and stretching inside with a "real feel" of like 12... it was actually nice when I got out there. From about 3.5 miles till done, I would remove my hood for periods of time. At about 4.5 I took my gloves off and carried them until the run was done and I was walking the cool down.

As much as I'm not a fan of the cold, I think I'm starting to appreciate it's potential to be better than the summer...

I'm not terribly excited about this HM in a little over a month and kind of regretting signing up for it but we will see what happens.
It's all about perspective.  View it as a training 13.1-miler to set a baseline for future improvement.  Don't go out and try to compare to where you were pre-injury.  This is the one you compare future HMs against.

Temp says much much much less than wind and whether that yellow thing in the sky is out or not.
This.

Was supposed to rest day, but I was bored, and I didn't feel like driving to the gym, so I headed outside for an easy 5-miler. Temp was only 3°, but there was very little wind. It was actually pretty pleasant.

Same for me. I was expecting pain outdoors today but - 2 F really wasn't bad when there is no wind. Icicle mustache and all.

Yeah, I've noticed the same. Ran in the teens but with sun and little wind and it was fine. Ran in the mid 30s and it was overcast and windy and was not nearly as nice.

I've also learned that a thermal base layer is huge. That and a fleece top and I'm perfect along with fleece running tights. Gloves and a balaclava and it feels nice and comfy. After about half mile, the balaclava top comes off and it's just a gaiter.

I'll give it a shot running in single digits next week but that may end up a bit much. The only thing that really sucks for me is how my glasses fog up with the balaclava. I'm going to start running in my contacts, I think, even though I never wear them anymore.

Speaking of gloves, any good recommendations? Every pair I get, my hands still seem to freeze and the temp is only in the 40s-50s.

Okay I said I would get in here more as part of my yearly goals so let's do it!

Gianmarco I see you are having second thoughts about signing up for that HM which is coming up.  I can only add for myself that doing some races between my target races is what is helping get me out there and running as consistently as I have the past five weeks. Last year I had 5 months between my last fall race and the one in the spring and I let my conditioning go because too many mornings I just did not want to exercise and it was easy to push it off.  This year I potentially have 1.5 months between races so it has been easier to get myself going. That being said, I am hoping to do this race next Sunday. It is only a 5K but I wanted something to keep me motivated, measure where I am at, but not be too hard on my conditioning as it is six weeks before my 10K race.  I have not signed up yet as have been waiting to get an idea what the weather will be like.  I have never had to run in the rain before and 45% and rainy is not my idea of fun (plus I don't want to get sick and derail my March race). I did go out and buy myself a throwaway light poncho today.  I have a feeling I will sign up in the next few days and do the race unless it is raining cats and dogs. As to my results so far in what I want to accomplish I really have no clue where I am at. I have been stuck at a certain pace so I was trying something different to get my speed up. Instead of doing true intervals I started doing half mile at a faster speed and a half mile slower, increased speed over a couple of weeks and then started trying to do more distances (.6 mile then .7 mile) at the faster speed while doing less on the slower (.4 and .3) with the plan to work it done to 100% faster. Couple weeks ago feels like I hit a brick wall and my legs just don't want to go fast for much of any distance. I backed off a little on speed and going to try backing off just a little more this week as maybe I just pushed too far. So we will see how it goes. That is partly why I want to do this race as I need to see what I can do in competition. Then next week figure out my plan for those last weeks heading into my 10K.

Lastly, thanks everyone for contributing so much to this thread. It helps keep me motivated seeing all of the efforts each of you are putting into it and all of your support for each other.

@Juxtatarot and @SFBayDuck hammering-out 20-milers today.  And one of them on a treadmill.  That's some serious dedication there.
Well mine was only 18.6, but was about 4 hours with 2,200 of gain. My first “real” long run since Grindstone, and all the connective tissues are feeling like it right now. But fun to be out going long again.

When I finished I stopped for a bite to eat, and found out my name was apparently drawn in the Wasatch 100 lottery today in the most “runner” way ever - on a Strava comment.  My year just got a whole lot bigger!

Awesome stuff.  Can't wait until I can "watch" you rock this race!

Been off the grid for a bit and way behind in this thread.  I’ll hopegully catch up later today.

Leading 3:45 pace group this morning in Miami. 6 am start with 20k people. Hope the rain holds off.

ill follow up later!

Awesome!

Good luck and enjoy!

He's been locked in the last couple splits at 8:33 pace. He's a machine.

Looking at the tracker and course, that's an awesome route (with the exception of a short part through a not so pretty part of town).  It actually goes right by one of the places I used to live there. Might have to consider this one in the future if I ever run one.

Watch time was 2:11:45.  Slightly disappointed but I knew I wasn’t t fully prepared.   Happy to have one done and have that 5 year hiatus behind me.

I live here but where we run that race and where I train are totally different.  The hills are brutal downtown.  I’d find a straightaway and feel like I could settle in, then I’d hit a hill and I’d be zapped.

Felt good to be back though, no complaints here.

race temp were about 37-45.
Well done, jb!!!    :pickle:

Other than my 2 races (Oct and Dec), I just ran my first long run (10+ miles) since September.  With today being one of the last days it won't be frigid (was 25 today with no wind) and nothing planned for the afternoon, it was a perfect day to get out.  I've gotten through all my runs this week without any quad or knee pain so it was time to give it a go.

What a fantastic run.  First of all, I ran it without any music (don't like the feel of the earbuds under the balaclava) and enjoyed every moment of the run.  I haven't run with music in a while now and I think I enjoy it more.  But considering this was a long run, I'm glad I didn't miss it.  Secondly, where a few days ago my pace seemed slower than my effort, today was the exact opposite.  I felt like I was taking it really easy to start and was pleased to see some of the paces I hit (even though nothing terribly fast).  None of the run ever felt uncomfortable and I was even able to speed up toward the end relatively easily.  I wouldn't call it an "easy" run, but I never felt like I was working.  That was incredibly encouraging.  Also, no leg pain whatsoever either during the run or afterward.  I finally feel back to normal.  It's been a while.

The best part was that I was hitting hills today without any kind of difficulty.  That is a first.  In the past, even when I was doing a training plan and getting more miles in and in better shape, hills still always were an effort no matter what speed I did them (slow or fast).  Today, every elevation I encountered felt like I was running on flat ground.  It was the strangest thing because I kept waiting for the effort to have to increase or just the feel I get every time I have to climb and it never showed up.   I don't know if it's all the quad stretching I've been doing or if it's the fact that I've been seeking out more elevation lately but I'm so excited about this.  Yesterday's run was similar where the hills felt easier than usual but today was even better.

I looked back and only 1 of my long runs in the past was faster than today's and considering how good today felt, I can't believe it when I look at where I was just a week ago.  Finished the week with 33 miles which isn't bad for me all things considered lately.  This next week is going to suck but I'm going to get out as much as I can.

The obvious difference between me and @SFBayDuck

Me:  "Hey, @Zasada, you should try running a 5K with your current fitness level and training"

Duck:  "Hey, Zasada, you should try running a 50K with your current fitness level and training"
There's no reason I can't do both, right?

Well there are lots of reasons the 50K could be a problem.  But those aside, this looks like a possible plan:

I just signed-up for this St. Patrick's Day 10K (races in Calgary in Jan-Apr are both dicey weather-wise and hard to find), and I'm eyeing The Slay the Dragon 50K in BC.  @SFBayDuck, how would that one be for a 50K noob like me?  Elevation (1600m/5200ft) far less than my one-day PR (2580m/8500ft) and the goal would be to just finish (rather than run/race, per your suggestion).  Also a friend of mine is up for it too, which would make it even more fun.

My 50K options are limited by the timing of the Calgary Marathon (26May) and the Moose Mountain 29K (24Aug), both of which I'm excited about.  This 50K sits nicely between the two (29Jun).

Week 4 of not training - 4 1/2 hours running (32 miles), 2 hours lifting, 1 1/2 hours shoveling.  The 8 hours of exercise were the highest so far - W1 6.5 hrs, W2 6.25 hrs, W3 7.25 hrs - and actually isn't a whole lot different than peak marathon training, which probably helps explain how I feel right now.  No real rest either as all but 7 miles were done in some snow and that run was done on flooded sidewalks in cement shoes.  Part of it is the cold I've been battling, but I'm in a bit of a fog right now.  But this is probably why I am noting right now that scheduled this week as deload.  I couldn't anticipate the weather, the last two weeks and what's to come this week - but I wanted to hit a mini peak last week. I think I accomplished that.

We'll see how much of a cutback week this actually is - I'm still 2-a-day'ing today but both will be of the lower intensity variety.  I'm not making any plans between tomorrow and Friday.  It's looking like I may be able to back load miles and I'll lift another time during the week.  So we'll see how much of a cutback week this really is, but maybe I only really need 2-3 days of limited activity to get fresh again.  Not gonna force it if my body asks for more time though.

Would love to see you fly through a 5K!  But that's just me.....
Yeah I'll keep my eyes peeled for one of those as well.  I think a 5K race won't be that much different from my Strava estimated PR, though.  I ran some pretty hard 5Ks in training...

So... was looking over some runs of some you in the fbg group - started with @gianmarco after seeing his discussion of the 10 miler above because of the detail of how good the run felt and was looking at his HR/cadence etc. and was comparing to other runs he has had recently. Then was looking at other people just to see where they are out of curiosity after paying so much attention to mine in recent runs. The one thing I learned is that apparently @Juxtatarot is apparently some kind of zombie! Running mile after mile after mile after mile at like 7 :15 to 7:30 pace and a HR barely averaging less than 130 is crazy stuff!

Looks like tonight and tomorrow are going to be treadmill days.

20mph north wind with bone-chilling temps. Tonight is an easy 7 miles, and tomorrow is supposed to be a speed workout. I'm sure I shall have a story about trying to figure out how to do that one on a treadmill. There's a good chance I'll get kicked out of the community center for looking like a dooooooomaaaaas.

I have always been a huge fan of @Juxtatarot‘s HR. Not sure why, but I always look at that for everyone. @gruecd‘s HR has been looking pretty nice lately. Just knocking out miles in the 7s while the HR is chilling in the 130s. Impressive stuff!

Ok... I'd like to submit my formal application to be admitted to the FBG BMF Running Club. I've felt plenty included in the community so far but between my 6.6 mile run in 20* weather Saturday and going outside on the truly mean streets of the East Side of Indy today at lunch, I feel ready to humbly request to to from Associate Member to Full Membership and to acquire all the rights and privileges associated therewith.

Not sure if I experienced a runners high or if that was just a contact buzz from the fine gentlemen I passed along side the road, but I think I really am hooked again rather than a passing fad. Had a nice 5 mile jaunt through town instead of trudging along the treadmill and was really wishing I had the time to keep on going.

So much fun!

Agree. I’m so jealous of some of these HRs. I’m like a 165 at my slow pace and 180 at my race pace and like 190+ at HI
