The Pines just claimed five more victims. 10 people made it there within 15 minutes of the cut off. This course is just brutal

DFL Just ripped off a blistering 16:48 pace to save his race. That is big time digging deep

7 hr to do 16 mi. He built a big cushion. It’s sufferfest time but he’s a bmf
Except I have vibes that he’s not suffering, as all the training is paying off at this stage and he’s simply flowing. Already looking forward to the race report and he’s not even done!

We shall see but this isn’t his past racing MO. I think the report will read that he just visited a dark place chasing 30. Hopefully he can kick back and enjoy the rest of the ride to his successful race completion and maybe take some time to bask in the glory of his accomplishments

Some crazy cut lines at this event. 2:15 to go 4 mi. Followed by 1:45 to go 7.2. Maybe  A planned nap and coffee for the sweeper

There are four guys on the current 7.2 mile stretch that dock is on who have been out there for four hours

Yeah, this is about the time he survives on chicken broth and warm coke.  I’m sure he’d like to be sub-30 ...hoping it happens!

Boom!  Second wind activated.  Great work Duck!!!!

Needs a 16:10 pace to pull off the sub 30.  I'm not going to bet against him.  It's going to be another 2.5 hours until we know.

Probably 2.25 with the difference in report lag.

What’s the terrain like over the final few miles?  Anyone check the course out?  It’s more likely that he gets some less technical terrain that he can plod along at a steady pace.

It's all down hill, but it's been that way for the last 20 miles.  Hard to say, seems to be mostly motivation.  Recent finishers aren't picking up time vs. the prior segment.  Of course the last sub 24 hr guy pulled a 9:42 pace out of nowhere after running 14s for the last 40 miles.  He bested the podium finishers over the last 9 mile segment.

First 29 hour finisher was posted at 29:20.  Time to start checking for a Duckdate will be about 45-50 minutes.

One broom victim at Sunrise2.  New DFL made the cut by 3 minutes.  She is going to need an 18:40 pace to finish.  Everyone else looks to be on track to finish.

San Diego100M instant reaction after just finishing 3 1/2 hours ago and not having slept for 37 hours (and counting) race report

So awesome to come here and see all this. It’s funny, I was going to tag @BassNBrew on Thursday night to remind him to do his combo play-by-play and color commentary. Love everyone else chiming in as well, especially @SayWhat? with the contrarian color commentary, like Mark Jackson arguing with Jeff Van Gundy.

The course was much tougher than I expected. While the climbs weren’t too steep, it was really technical and rocky in sections, especially that 7 miles down to Cibbets Flat and then back up. Not Grindstone rocky, but really rocky. Just unrunnable for mere mortals like myself, to the point that coming back up was actually easier. Rocks gave me blisters big time from about mile 60 on.  @tri-man 47 called it, i never got sick but after a gel decided to hang out in my stomach and not move on for 45 minutes despite me throwing all my ultra tricks at it, I was down to just tailwind on the course and hanging out in the aid stations drinking broth and Coke to get more calories in. And it was hot out there, lots of exposed stuff, so extra time spent loading up my sleeves, shirt pockets, ice bandanna, getting wet, etc to try and counteract that. So way more aid station time than I liked, even though none of it was “I’m going to sit here because I’m tired,” which was good.

I executed mentally pretty well, other than a  low spot on that 7 mile descent and the start of the climb. I snapped out of it a bit, but then started to think sub-30 wasn’t happening and I let that get to me. At mile 84 I finally took the time to deal with the blisters, taking a pin off my bib to pop a couple and then re-lubing. That helped, and as I started back up the trail I was doing the math again, and realized it might be possible. That whole “it’s all downhill” for the latter part of the race isn’t really accurate at, as there were some nice climbs coming out of there and I started picking people off (12 people between miles 84-91, per the live tracking). I rolled into the final aid at 91.5 determined to try, and with the outside thought of  a new PR by beating my WS time of 29:47. So I quickly iced up, filled my pack and bottle, and was getting ready to go when Surf tapped me on the shoulder.   We had run together for the first 21 miles on Friday when he started having some health issues. So he told me to go ahead , and he ended up slogging his way to mile 44 before dropping. And yet there he was the next day saying, “I’m here to pace you.”  We took off and I told him sub-30 was the goal, and his response was “what was your time at States?”  And so off we went, him pushing me and me just trying to keep shuffling along, especially on the parts that weren’t rocky.  Finally it was within earshot of the finish celebration, and I managed a blistering 11:46 mile 102 and 10:52 final 0.3, which felt like a full on tempo effort.  All in all I must say I’m pretty damn satisfied right now as I sit here getting ready to dig into a giant burrito.

(sorry this is more stream of consciousness than usual....37 hours no sleep and all.....)

Well done duck. I thought the 30 had slipped away. What has slipped away is any chance of me being able to pace you in September and not being spit out the back

Incredible work, Duck.  Enjoy that burrito.  You earned it, and a dozen more.
