Just fuel up that diesel engine tonight and grind that MFer out tomorrow. See you on the other side with your WS100 qualifier and a new buckle.

Just read this week that hard rock was canceled and no lottery next year. Was bummed for you when I read that

Do we have tracking info somewhere for Brew?
There is, but the site is terrible.  First of all, it has "DNF" in big letters for Chip Time and Gun Time for everyone, since they haven't finished yet.  Secondly, I've tried both mobile and desktop and there doesn't seem to be a way to see a full results list that shows where people are tracking relative to each other.   You can sign up for text alerts, I just did that but haven't gotten one yet so don't know if that'll work.

But at least we can check in and see as he comes through the following aid stations (site doesn't even have mileage listed that I could see, so I'll put them here):

North Hawkins (9.5) - he was through here in 1:50:09, 11:36 pace, 128th

Valley Picnic (26.6)

Kendall Lake (40.2)

Silver Springs (51.2)

Kendall Lake (62.2)

Valley Picnic (75.8)

North Hawkins (92.8)

Finish (102.3)

Well, he is 10 minutes ahead of his schedule. Nice work @BassNBrew!

I made it through my first long run in months without my groin/adductor  giving.  There is still pain but usually it had been "giving way" (I don't know how else to describe it) to a whole higher pain level around the 10-mile mark.  I made it 17 miles and decided not to push it.  (I also was pretty tired.)

Perhaps physical therapy has helped.  We've mostly focused on hip stretches and  glut strengthening.  I  might have to keep working on these glutes.  Who knows, maybe someday I can learn to "fire" then like @MAC_32 does instead of them just being along for the ride.

Yup, too much snow in some areas still, and a ton of avalanche damage combined to make sections of the course unusable or aid stations not able to be reached.  So all entrants and wait list just roll over to next year.

Thanks.  Bib 97.  Should be updates posted every 30 minutes at the website or you can download RaceJoy and get a live feed.

I have my pace chart based on 29:59:27.  Going to try and bank some time as I know I'll suffer in the heat on the pavement section which will be during the heat of the day.  May end up walking most of that, we'll see.

Key milestones

Hawkins 6 am

Oak Hill 9 am

Robinson 11 am

Hike and Bike 3 pm

Silver springs 4:45 pm

I'm all full of myself for running 16 miles this morning and this is the first post I see when I come by... :lmao:

Doesnt matter, I'm still all :pumped:  :headbang:

How did that pace feel? If this was an easy run and your heart rate stays at 155, you are breaking 4 hours easily.

Glad you asked... Some observations...

First to answer your question... pace felt good through about 14 miles. Last 2 my HR was creeping up, my mind was wandering a bit, my body hurt a bit... Overall I still didn't feel terrible but was having to work more.

But really learned why people have been telling me to get more miles and more long runs. I knew but really felt it today. Normally it's about mile 10 of 13.1 that I've started to "feel" it. Today I felt like it was pretty "easy" through about 11.5 or 12 miles. From 12 to 14 I started to "feel it", if you know what I mean. At about 14, it felt like the last mile of HM - just keep moving, just keep moving, etc.

Once finished I know some of the issues the last couple of miles was pure mental - never done it before, mind telling me it had to suck, etc. Watch tells me it was some physical with elevated HR, etc.

Also, the route kind of is a good mental test, IMO. Starting downtown and going north means that there are few people to start and there is less shade. Northern end has more people, which is a "pick me up", IMO. But then the last 2 or 3 miles means I'm all alone, temp is rising, shade disappears. Figure if I can persevere there, I can do it anywhere, right?

So, today with little cooler temps, nice pacing, and still have like 3 months to go, I feel pretty stoked today about being able to go sub 4 hours. Still have a lot of work to do to get there, but today is definitely a happy day!

Also started testing some in race fueling today. Got a nice Nathan's belt with water bottles a few weeks ago and have used that on a couple runs. Picked up some clif bloc gummies this week and used them today. Have to do some research on "recommended quantities" and such between now and race time but I liked having them today and that all went well too.

You may pick up some Tailwind to mix with your water. Adds calories and a lot of other good stuff and your body should easily take it in.

Out Strava feed this morning is a nice list of BMFers. Seriously, y'all are Killin it.
Geez, no kidding. Some serious miles out there today.

What about our boy @AAABatteries? 20 miles?

"La di da I'm just going to roll out of bed and bust out 20 miles even though I've barely been running for months cause I've been hurt and it's not really my thing except now it's my thing because I just knocked out 20 miles like I'm an ultra guy BMF and the #### is just warmup and maybe later today I might even just ride my bike for 200 miles or something.  CHUBB rating -- Emily Ratajkowski and Gal Gadot completely naked together on a mattress of chocolate and my famous French fries"

Crazy stuff!!!  BMFing all over the country.   :hifive:

@Brony drops a solid 27.6 mile bike workout and doesn't sniff the podium (behind 65.8, 63.6, and 50.0).  As I said on Strava, if I'd have followed my original plan and driven north a ways before starting my run, Brony and I would have passed each other on the DesPlaines River trail.    :bye:

@The Iguana speeds through a distance PR of 16 miles and tops three other double digit runners but also misses out (20.0, 19.1, and 17.1).

...all while @BassNBrew says "oh, it's a BMF kind of day?  Hold my beers."

2 weeks ago I felt kind of like crap after 13.1 and was questioning my sanity and ability to actually do 26.2. Today I'm on cloud 9 after finishing 16 and loving all this more than ever. I'm sure there are plenty more ups and downs between now and November 9th, but I ok just appreciating the high for today. I'll try not to let it go to head too much...

I'd imagine the weather as a ton to do with that too. Also doing something I've never done before is pretty motivating, IMO. Still a little daunting if I think about the fact that I still need to do another 10.2 miles after what I finished today! With a HR starting to touch 180 at the end of 16, there's still plenty of work to do so that will keep the "high from being too high" as the cliche goes.

15 more weeks!

I'll settle for the bronze bike today.

Although Strava is still cheating Suunto. Not so much the distance today, but Strava tracked my 3 minutes sitting at lights as moving time. (I paused Suunto).  Not a big deal today (just lost 0.3 mph), but I don't get why the transfer is screwy.

Got to bed later than I wanted last night, so I didn't get out until almost 9am for my 13 this morning. Warm and humid, but I took it easy and got it done.

Brewers/Cubs (and beers) with @wraith5 tonight, so it remains to be seen if I'll run tomorrow or take a rest/recovery day before I start my training cycle on Monday. Got my schedule for weeks 1-4 today. Coach is NOT taking it easy on me.

Goal(s) for 2019 (in order of estimated difficulty):

  1. Reclaim the CR on the Ann & Sandy Cross Paradise loop (currently about two minutes faster than my PR)
  2. Run the Chevron Houston Marathon in January

    • Bonus goal:  Do it in under 4 hours (Done!)
  3. Finish the 29K Moose Mountain Trail Race in under 4 hours in August

    • This could be a low bar, hard to estimate times but the course is about double the length of my usual Moose Mountain O&B and 50% more elevation (which I can do in about 2 hours) -- the website suggests it is about equivalent difficulty to a street marathon, and given that I have a 4hr goal for that, it seems reasonable here too
  4. Run the Las Vegas Rock n Roll HM in under 1:45:00 in November

    • Too low a bar?  Should I aim for 1:40?  Not sure how much improvement can be expected at my level of fitness
  5. Complete a Prairie Mountain ascent in under 50:00 (Done!)
Second 2019 goal completed this morning.

Was really concerned through the week that pulling ~two minutes off my PR would be tough (PR was 51:43, goal was sub-50:00).

So, in @SFBayDuck fashion (albeit on a much smaller scale), I mapped-out three checkpoints to pace my time and see how I was doing.

I won't bore you with the details, but by the first split (1KM) I was almost two minutes ahead of pace and surprisingly just built on that through the next two splits.

And I knocked just over six minutes off my PR.  45:37.

Clearly I need to work on my goal-setting.  But just as clearly, I have regained my mountain legs much faster than I anticipated.  They just went into hiding while I was training on streets Jan-May of this year.

Oh and because I was so stoked about my PR, I decided to knock-out two more ascents.  20K (12mi) total, with 2,018m (6,600ft) of elevation.

I too noticed all the BMFery on Strava today.  Nice work, guys!

So, I'll be honest, this run was probably a mistake - for a couple of reasons - it was kind of last minute, I've not run this far before and I probably need some different gear if I want to do this again.

Quick story on why - earlier in the week my buddy who I hike and camp with texts me and says he wants to get out this Saturday for either a hike or run.  I hadn't been hiking in while so we tentatively were planning on that.  My plan was to run last night (Friday) and then hike Saturday.  So then on Thursday my friend says he's out as he won't be getting back until late Friday night and was wanting to rest.  So I decide to just go solo on the hike.  Then on Friday my wife calls me and says that we are going out to dinner as all the kids had gone to the lake with some friends.  I tell her that's cool but then I'm going out running - but her Aunt is in town and she asks if we can go visit her at her Mom's.  So, pulled the plug on the run last night to hang with the family (had a great time so glad we did it).  While we were there I'm thinking - ok, what am I going to do tomorrow.  I've only gotten 6 miles of running this week so far and I really want to do the hike.  So, I'm like- why not do both.

When I go for a longer hike it's usually 10-15 miles and I always just walk.  So today, I decide I'm going to try and do like our good buddy Duck and go after the trails and do 20.  I've got a decent pair of trail shoes but no good pack - more just hiking packs.  I got some water and some fuel and headed out.  This route is through Kennesaw Mtn. National Battlefield Park - it's a huge park and enough trails to probably do a marathon without needing to use the same part of trail twice.  I've done the route I took several times hiking but never hike-running and never this far.

Let me repeat - in retrospect I think I'm probably lucky I didn't injure myself - I'm feeling pretty good right now and think I'll be fine but my legs are dead.

The overall route ended up having just a hair under 1900 ft. of elevation gain so almost but not quite an average of 100 ft. of elevation per mile.   I probably did several dumb things during the run but starting out a little fast was definitely one of them - granted a little fast for me on this course was 13 minute pace.  My plan was - miles 1-5, try to maintain a decent steady pace; miles 6-10 to really hit the downhills and then walk if needed on the uphills (4 of the 5 miles have a negative elevation); miles 11-15 just try to keep moving and walk as little as possible and then miles 16-20 just hang on.  Pretty much worked out like that so was pleased overall.  Was hurting quite a bit the last few miles and my pace really fell off - was hiking as much as jogging the last 3.

Total - 20 miles - 14:53/mi - total time, basically 5 hours (4:57)

@The Iguana - fantastic job, you run was super impressive, great steady pace.

Let's go @BassNBrew!

The tracking site is so bad that I downloaded the Racejoy app, which seems a lot better.  According to that, last check in he was at mile 60 in 15:40:21.  It indicates he was at Hike and Bike (57.7) at 6:41 PM, so just 11 minutes off his goal time at that point.  So yeah, he's gettinsome

Sounds like my kind of day, nice job!

I used more of a hiking pack when I first started going longer on the trails as well. Stuff would bounce around in that thing so badly!  Once I decided long days on the dirt were my thing I bought a Camelback designed for running, and then went to the Ultimate Direction race vests that I've worn for the past several years.

I haven't used my trekking poles since Grindstone, and Wasatch definitely will require them so I dusted them off and headed out to chase a couple of the steepest sections around.  I worked my way up Mt. Burdell and then hit Old Quarry trail, which is good for 721' of gain in .78 of a mile.  Headed back down and then back up to the top again.  Then it was back down to the trailhead, across the way, and up Little Mountain which is 558' in .64 miles.  That one sucked, and wasn't particularly encouraging.  I was also out of water and it was 88 degrees by then, but still I realized my legs for steep climbs are just not where they need to be right now.

I thought my 3k' of gain in 13.5 miles was pretty good until I got on Strava and saw that @Zasada doubled my vert in a mile less.

In the process of having a number of adult beverages. Before I have so many that I go too far overboard, I just wanted to tell everyone how much I appreciate the community, the encouragement, the wide advice (that I often ignore) and everything else this place offers. There are so many solid people hear and just so much bonus motivation that I can't even adequately communicate the effect this place has had on me.

Thanks, folks. You guys rock!

It really is a great thread.  It’s also a model of how we should respect each other here at FBGs.  Even when we disagree on things (and, yes, running can be contentious), we always try to do it in the most respectful manner possible.

Imagine if the whole world acted like we do here. (You may say I’m a dreamer...)

Day 58/100

Reacclimating to being at home. Had a great nap this afternoon, then got out and did 5 miles. 4.5 of that was jogging without a walking break. I think that that is an all-time personal best. Like, best in my lifetime. I don't remember ever running that far, non-stop before. Considering I could maybe run a mile nonstop wen I started this, I'm pretty happy. Weigh-in coming up on Monday. Regardless of what the scale says, I'll be making some substantial dietary adjustments. Heading to GNC tomorrow.

Bank: $580
New recruit?

@Tecumseh, you might want to check this thread out. Open invitation :)

Dude. With all due respect. You come in here all Jimmy La-di-da, luring us into this false sense of security that you are easing into this. And then you pull out this 20 mile bullcrap outta your Energizer Bunny butthole.

Jesus man, you did 20 miles today. We don’t care how you got there but that is some bad-### sheeeeeit.

On the CHUBB scale that is like banging Sophia Loren in her prime followed by Kate Upton allowing to play helicopter pilot on her major assets.
