Ran a 10k - Official Thread (3 Viewers)

Mike Wardian took 2nd at Baltimore marathon last weekend and he’s rolling just over 6 min miles in the 50k at Marine Corp. The guy just runs and fast.

He’ll hit the last stretch where it’s all right there for last mile or so then I charge up the hill to the Iwo Jima monument at finish. He can hear the finish and crowds are back after a brief gap.

Thanks, guys!  Yeah, lots of rain through most of the race, and lots of water on the ground.  Splish splash, for sure. Really tough conditions for a marathon.  My watch messed mile two, so I wasn’t certain of my status.  I finally got a solid rhythm from mile 6 through about 19, and felt great about those splits, then held it steady after that.  Last climb to the finish was really tough.  Spent 15 minutes in the med tent afterwards. 👍 Got a BQ-35. 😁. Hoping the PR of 3:28:27 or so is good enough for a top five finish.

I really appreciate the support.  I tried to BMF it through the race and through the rain.

I was able to go run the 10k route my race will be on this morning and kind of figure out course.  So I was happy to be able to get an idea on it -  the route was a couple tenths short so there must be part of it I didn’t figure out but close enough.  The good is it’s not as hilly as I thought - just a shade under 300 ft. elevation for the 6 miles I did.  The bad is about half a mile is on the rocky-sandy shoreline.  We should be fine if we don’t get rain but if we do that section could get messy.  The really good news is I did those 6 miles in 9:38 pace which was faster than what I set my A goal so I need to rethink that.  I wasn’t even really pushing things - kept the HR in the 150s pretty much the entire time today and then I ran an easy 4 more.  Not really sure how aggressive to be with my goal pace.

Run by HR. Comfortably uncomfortable for the first 3 miles. Then hammer home the final 5K.

Cut it in half

Short race report

I’ve been going back and forth on whether or not to race based off the weather. The weather usually doesn’t have an impact on me mentally. But I’d be lying if I said this past week hasn’t impacted me because it has really been brutal. After one 67 degree morning, I thought the awful summer weather was in the past. Nope. This week we have seen the highest lows on the entire year. I’m talking 78-80 degrees as the low with maximum humidity. Enough ####### about the weather.

I decided to race because I somewhat felt obligated to a few family members that were going to attend. Last night, my wife and I got into an argument about running and its impact on a few things. We had a friend’s party to attend and couldn’t stay past 9 because I wanted to get some sleep.

Woke up around 3:45 after about 5 hours of sleep. Went straight out the door to do my first ever Neurostim run. My past Neurostim runs have occurred about 30 minutes before the race which don’t really count. I did a mile and in hindsight was probably a poor idea. Sweat a ton because of the weather, even at a 10 minute pace. You know what they say, never try something new on race day, well I did. I am not saying that was the issue, but I think it did more harm than good.

Out the door and at the site about 15 minutes early. Short warm up and then started. Stuck with a group of 3 for the first 4 miles. Looked at my watch 5 mins in, Garmin says -2 performance and I am struggling to breath. I knew that was the end of a reasonable time. Still haven’t figured out how to calm down before a race without letting it have a huge negative impact on my breathing.

As for the race, not much to say. I went out at what should’ve been an easy pace, but my breathing and HR said otherwise. I didn’t really look at my watch the entire race. Ran completely on effort and gave it all I had. When I saw my time at the line, I have to admit I was pretty embarrassed. I realize it’s a “fast” time for many, and I mean no disrespect, but I can run 7:15, even in those conditions, fairly easy.

Outside my first marathon, this was my most painful/difficult race. I wanted to quit at mile 5. I wanted to and almost did puke at mile 7. But, I stuck with it and gutted it out. As embarrassed as I was about the time, I was extremely proud of my effort.

With all that being said, I think I may be done with racing for a long time (other than the marathon distance). I work so hard everyday but just cannot preform in a race. I am not the best person leading up to races. I overthink everything about them. I was in a good place with running, and I will not let this change that. Thanks for all the well wishes and compliments.

@JShare87, sorry about the struggles and frustrations.  Maybe think about traveling north for some cool weather racing, now that you’ve got some friends up this way. Make it a ‘runcation’ with your wife. Even if it’s a shorter race 10K or HM, it’d let you run in better temps and you’d get a nice trip in.

That sounds kinda crummy all around but impressed that you BMF'd for that many miles.

You have every right to be proud of your effort.  I get that you're disappointed with the time, but I echo @tri-man 47's comments.  Find a race with good weather/conditions and turn it into a race-cation.  I did that in Montana in August.  Wife went shopping while I went to my race.  Then the rest of the weekend we enjoyed the sights/restaurants.

Same for my baby-Ultra.  I went out racing while she enjoyed a nap and the mountain village.  Met me at the end.

You would crush a 50-degree HM!
