Nope. I would take the same approach you are with the buff/gaiter as needed.

Can you can get away from people on any routes back in the city?  Are trails crowded but streets are less so to spend more time on those routes vs where the crowds are or the city is just too dense to avoid people?
It's NYC. No way to avoid people when the weather's nice/warm. Way less runners when it's cooler to cold.

I have a run that goes over the wburgh and Brooklyn or manhattan bridges that takes me through a less dense section of Brooklyn. But in Manhattan, it's impossible...at least downtown where I live.

In MD I passed maybe 1 or 2 people per run. So easy to just pull up my shirt over my mouth/nose for that instead of using a mask.

Sorry all for not posting much lately.  I also shutdown my social media accounts since like the new year. I’ve been very low key the last 6-7 months.

The reason for this is I decided to run for political office. Well, a local municipal election anyway. The election was this past Monday, and I won.  Kinda crazy and I could write for days about the campaign and the election process but prolly better I don’t share :) .

The point of me sharing is that going forward each of you know that when you address me, please use either “Sir” or utilize a virtual 🙇‍♂️

👋

Stick it to the man!

Congrats!

Congrats, that's awesome!

Was this the campaign strategy?  :)

Up and at 'em to try and beat the heat. Body is really sore from tearing out my bathroom yesterday. Gonna shoot for a two hour run.

Enjoy your 4th gentlemen.

I’m up too! What do we do now?
Coffee (and Bailey’s) here.  :coffee:

Wife claimed prime early morning running window with a friend today, which seems to be a common occurrence of late, so I’m going to be getting the mid-morning window as things heat up.  Yeah!

Hope everyone has a safe 4th weekend!

The old man is up!  Some nights this un-air conditioned cottage makes for a lousy night’s sleep.  We just upgraded the electrical and bought a portable A/C unit that we can rotate between the three small bedrooms, but we’ve prioritized the rooms for the grand babies.

Heading out soon for an 8-10 miler.

Oh, hi 10kers. I didn't realize we should have scheduled a 6am Zoom get together this morning.

Not running today. Hopefully long tomorrow although my left Achilles is hurting a bit. Had to avoid a dog walker a couple days ago and stepped in a hole while running in the grass and tweaked it. Felt a little burn yesterday and not thrilled. Same thing that shelved me for 3 weeks about 2 years ago. Doing stretches and rest today.

Have a good holiday weekend, gents.

You're not allowed to zoom.

🙄 You’re not even allowed to Zoom anymore. Should’ve scrolled to the bottom. It appears @MAC_32 was faster, again! No surprise there.

NYC was not so sucky for the run this am. Lower temps and humidity. Crowded on the Hudson River, but fine going across, over the Manhattan bridge through Brooklyn. Williamsburg bridge will be an ongoing problem with people.

Big day today @JShare87!

Woke up this morning, and got in my two hour run - ended up being a 10 miler. First one of those I've had in awhile, but damn I'm out of shape. After that:

- Farmers Market

- Mowed grass of friend who is dying of cancer

- Went to Quik Trip for a tall coke and a donut

Home by 10 and the rest of the day is for relaxation. Tore out my master bathroom yesterday, so today's fireworks will be mostly shot inside the old toilet sitting in the front yard next to my garage.

BBQ chicken on the grill later along with my famous fries + some farmers market bounty.

Oh, and I made a video for you wankers. Happy 4th!

Now that’s a damn near perfect day.

How did you not have a random shovel in the background in your kitchen for that video?

2/10, will not watch again

Wow, the glute pain went from absent on Tuesday to "I can barely walk" today.  Tried the trails this morning (hoping the different terrain/footstrike would be better) and now things are as bad as they ever were back in Oct.  That was fast (last year it took months to progress like this).

Just back here to whine about it.  Wife offered me a butt massage.  So there's upside there.
Definitely feel that.

On the plus side, kayaking is so much better than running.

:scared:

So today...

Woke up, took the dog outside while I read for a few minutes (my 12yo had convinced me to read wings of fire book 1).

Glance down by the 7 pine trees, looks like my dog is standing there. Then he's also by the porch :oldunsure:   I look again by the pine trees, that's a ####### coyote in my backyard. 🥺 It's chasing a rabbit, then leaped over our 6' fence. My dog keeps looking for his new friend. Then the coyote jumps back in. Murphy watches his new buddy, the coyote catches a rabbit and jumps over the fence again. Murphy looks genuinely upset that his buddy is gone. I'm standing here like "that dude could kick your 35 lb butt big Guy"

All good though.

Kayak on the Tennessee River. Love it.

Got back home, take the wife to home Depot to buy 2 toilets. 😻 Then Rita's for Italian ice.

Relaxed most of the afternoon, we'll do a fire in a little bit here.

Happy Independence day y'all!

Little 5 mile jaunt on the trails with the pup this morning, took him to a creek to cool off, then home and into the pool for me. Mimosas (or as my kid calls them “breakfast wine”) made their way into the mix, and here it is like 7 hours later and I’m still poolside, bikini-clad babe by my side, listening to some tunes.

Going to whip up some carnitas for dinner in a bit, then some Netflix and chill, as the kids like to say. Or maybe just the Netflix part, because we’ll both fall asleep at 9:30 on account of the breakfast wine and all.

This is turning into a thing, and I’m here for it. Hell of a little Saturday you had!

Wow. I see them pretty regularly here, and when I’m out around dawn with the pup I’m on full alert as I’ve heard stories of them taking dogs. At 50 lbs Summit is a little bigger than most of them, so between that and my presence hopefully they won’t get any ideas.

That's my hope, my rat terrier / Shepard / ??? Alabama mix is probably okay, but you never know. I had never seen one in our backyard, but there are a few coyotes and deer in the greenway behind us.

About to go try 10 miles

SI at home is 168 (73 temp, 95% humidity) but at the rail trail 15 miles north where I’m going to run it’s ... also 168 (5 degrees cooler but with the rarely seen 100% humidity)

I drank 5 beers yesterday. Also played in the lake and sun for the day.  Not sure which one hit me worse but I feel like I’m going to die.

The SI would be the dew point plus the temp. Not the humidity plus the temp. The weather you’re describing would be an SI of 144. We call that glove wearin weather round here.

99% humidity, but only 75° so not bad but it got hard to see through my riding lenses with all that sweat.

Get back, feeling pretty good. See 20.6 mph. :) Then see JT "beat' me by 0.1 mph.  (He also rode another half hour, but that's besides the point)

Jackass

;)

How crowded is NCR these days?
B&A has been crazy but the heat is taking the crowd down so there is one upside to it, right @gruecd??

It’s been ok but keeps getting worse. Few runners but more and more cyclists, many of whom seem to have no clue what they’re doing. And it’s exploded with people tubing down the Gunpowder over the last 2 weekends

I always start from the Sparks Nature Center which puts me nicely between the crowds at the start of the trail and the crowds at Monkton. I was there by 730 this morning and it was great but things were already getting mental by 9

Good run, as the sun came up the temps increased by only a couple degrees but it dried up a lot of the humidity. Just tried to keep the HR comfortable- it slowly inched up over 130 after an hour. Did the first 7 at what turned out to be 10:30 pace then picked it up to 9:30 for the final 3 once I knew I had enough in the tank to finish

I had 5 big margheritas poolside here in NJ yesterday...out by 9:30. Officially have turned into old man smithers. I guess doing a long hard run in the am didn't help.

Didn't bring my running stuff and am regretting it...really pretty and hilly where we're at in horse country Long Valley- I'm sure some good running to be found.

Im a little late here, but this has been a big learning for me.  First I should say everyone is different.  You need to learn what type of sweater you are.

I dont know the exact numbers for other people, but I have found doing endurance training for anything more than 5 hours a week, I need less water and more electrolytes.  When I say electrolytes, I really mean salt.  Im learning that I am not a water sweater, I am a salt sweater.

People who say to drink more water, like 100oz a day, those people dont exercise much IMO.  When I would do that I would pee every 30 minutes and my urine would be completely clear.  I would get headaches in the afternoon and pains in my hamstrings in any run north of 8mi.  Once I started intense endurance training, that habit of drinking so much water killed me.  I am now spending a ton of time eating salt.  Like literally putting salt in everything.  I rarely drink water without adding salt anymore.  When I say salt, for me it means that fufu Sherpa Pink salt with all the minerals in it.  For endurance drink?  I love Gatorade endurance, I buy this one.  For carbs, I like this GU.

Now when I sweat, its more crusty and salty and my body feels so much better.  I can now feel when I need salt and when I have had to much.  Its like when I eat something salty it tastes like forever awesome.  Or if I have had too much salt, I feel thirsty and drink a couple sips of water.

The good by product of this is now I stop so much less on longer workouts to pee.  I drink so much less fluids before a race.  I also purchased these, but prolly wont try them out until the hotter months.

My A race this year will be my first HIM.  Im guessing ~6.5 hours of suffering.  What Im learning is that once you get past 3-4 hours of endurance, your body starts hating sugar.  For that ive been spending a lot of time learning to consume heavier calories during a race.  Ive learned along those times that apparently its a strength of mine as I seem to have an iron stomach.

PS - I love these nutrition topics!
Welp, after today, I'm taking a dive into the salt supplements.  There's just no way for me to keep up with fluids right now.

Drank almost 4L of water during our long run today and was STILL down 7 pounds at the end.  I picked up a hydration vest with a 2.5L bladder, which is heavy AF to run with, but I don't have a choice.  Car stop each 6 miles to drink more and refill the bladder.  No other practical way to do it.  Just so. much. sweat.  I'm pretty sure if @gruecd was a JV sweater, I'm at Olympic level when it comes to sweating.

Anyway, just picked up some SaltStick capsules and going to start trying those.  I don't know what else to do when running in these conditions and trying to stay hydrated.
