Ran a 10k - Official Thread (5 Viewers)

My schedule actually fit the lunch run today, and I felt like I sweated off a whole person.  Mid 80's and huuumid.  Fortunately your weather is on its way.
Dunno about you, but it looks like we are just getting one day of 50something dew points and even that'll be kinda warm. Gonna try to tempo cause this is the best we got...then it'll be several more days before we may get our second wave of fake fall.

Yeah, nothing great running wise here : upper 70’s during the day and low 60’s at night, but the last couple of days were ridiculous and felt like July, which I think is supposed to end tonight.  Car said 90 yesterday afternoon.🥵

87/67 for us for the next 5 days in a row.

I shower post run, but I'm still sweating for sometime after. Like Chef the evenings last too late to run in the morning, so lunch is my window. If others schedule afternoon meetings with me then that's their own damn fault.  :X
Take a cold shower, and you will not sweat after. In my case, I hop in the ice bath after my morning runs. Quick shower after and my body temp stays low for a while.

My post wasn't questioning his advice at all even though it seems that's how you took it. I was wondering what the specific diagnosis was that he gave you. I'm pretty sure "Achilles is ####ed" isn't it as most coders won't allow that and compensate for it.

I'm guessing he's calling it "Achilles tendonitis" or "tendinopathy" but I'm curious for future reference.

I was also asking if indomethacin was the anti-inflammatory he prescribed. Again, for learning purposes.
lol out loud at the thought of a doctor coding something as Achilles is ####ed.

Also didn’t have my glasses on and was wondering why you thought horse dewormer would help him.

Yeah, zero chance I could run over lunch at work here in DFW.  Even in cool temps, I sweat enough that it would make the rest of my day pretty gross.

Still an early morning guy.  Get it done first thing, and it isn't hanging over me the rest of the day.  And while it tends to be the most humid part of the day, at least it's cooler.  And the sun isn't beating down on me.

On a related note, the other day I saw a guy out for a lunch run at our campus (which is quite large) and he was all @gruecding it and running shirtless.  At work.  Really?  I get that it's hot, but really?

oh... and he prescribed Voltaren 75mg tablet- arthritis medicine, pain/anti-inflammatory

FWIW, I had bursitis in my knee way back (the first time I tried to pick up running).  Shut it down for a few weeks, and even spent a weekend in bed to try to get it to heal (I was walking with a limp).  None of that worked until I went to the doctor and he prescribed a mega dose of Naproxen.  Fixed it overnight.

The dose also resulted in some GI bleeding, but I'll be damned if that pill didn't work miracles on my knee.

Fill the prescription.  YMMV, of course.

Fair enough.  I guess I'm not buff enough to feel like I could be around my work colleagues shirtless.  This dude wasn't any Adonis, either.  But perhaps I'm on an island on this one.
I'm not "buff," either.  But that still wouldn't stop me.

Yesterday was the first time I've worn a shirt to run since May. I wear one out of my office, put it in my car, then put it back on upon completion. And there isn't such a thing as a buff endurance runner. Get out of here with that!

It's a spectrum, though.  As someone who falls more towards the "emaciated" end of the spectrum, I've only ever run shirtless at the beach, and I feel a little weird even there.

yeah- running shirtless for me:

1- leave the apartment and walk through the apartment building without a shirt- oh, hi Mrs Carbunkle from 3B- I see you're checking out my nipples and love-handles. how you doin'.

2- run 1/2 mile through city sidewalks jiggling and bouncing to the oldies.

3- run on the river/bridges etc... feeling great.

4- run 1/2 mile back through city sidewalks profusely sweating, jiggling and bouncing to the oldies, working and brushing my past people heading to work on busy sidewalks.

5- oh...hi- you're still here standing in the lobby, Mrs Carbunkle?

I wore a shirt yesterday, and that was one of just a handful of days since back in June or so ...just too hot and humid.  My shoulders and biceps are definitely marathon-scrawny, but at least I have some definition in my pecs.

This is funny. I actually run by my job every morning shirtless. Even though it’s pitch black, there are a few early-birds that are at the school while I’m running. I often pass people as they’re pulling in. I always wonder if it’s not appropriate (me being an administrator and all).

Meh.  Everybody has nipples.

Quite a few years ago at the university, I was walking down a hallway at from the locker room to the pool for a midday swim.  Coming down the hall were my boss, the VP, and a couple of guests who were with her (maybe contractors).  We all chatted for a moment, but it was more than a little awkward, trying to act normal while standing there in my speedo (though with towel in hand).

For your sexy self, yes...it’s appropriate.

For the rest of us tubbys and scrawny skeletons....no.

So, my 13 year old son had his first cross country meet tonight. I talked him into running so he could in shape for hockey.

He’s in the B Group. In this area they have 3 groups - A, B and C.

Supposedly this is to separate kids by speed level so kids are placed with similar runners. Clearly the coaches sandbag this because the kid who won the C group ran a 6 minute race. (That one is a one miler). The A and B group runs two mile races.

Anyway, I take a quick mental scan of the course on my drive in, so I have a little intel to give him before the race. The course is a rolling hill course, so from the starting line we can see out about where the first mile is. It then turns and you can sight of the runners again at about the 1.25 mile mark.

At that point there is a large hill there, and once you crest that hill you have about a half mile downhill to the finish. I point out two large trees at the top of the hill and tell him:

”once you get there, you go and go hard til the end.”

I also told him: you are fit for this. If you think you are tired, you aren’t. Push through that and I promise your body will respond. He nods ok and off he goes.

The gun goes off and I start the stopwatch on my phone. At the 1.25 mile mark I see the first kid. I start counting kids, and by god I look and immediately recognize his running style - He’s running 4th and about to climb that hill.

I started walking toward a corner about 100 yards from the finish. They turn a corner here and then they can see the fans and the finish line at the bottom of the hill.

He crests that hill and he’s still running 4th. He’s turning to see where his competition is, and there are 3 kids stacked up about 2 seconds behind. I whisper to myself: “you gotta go kid.”

He comes to the corner where I am, and we look at each other right in the eyes and I shout:

”You gotta go. Go now. GO GO GO!!!”

He puts in this incredible kick - it damn near made me cry on the spot. And proceeds to smoke those kids down that hill at full sprint.

Final Finish: 4th!! Top ten of each group medal.

PODIUM!! Unofficial time for two miles: 12:59.

Booyah! So proud of him. What a day.

"I was in the pool!"

What are your thoughts on cortisone shots? I’m trying to explore options of reducing pain for this marathon to help improve performance.

Would have to improve short term performance at the risk of worsening an underlying issue at race intensity. If you can address the area post race it would be great for longevity.

I'm so swamped with work & IM training that I have hardly been able to keep up with this thread let alone post in it. Just want to say you (& some of your kids) are truly inspiring and I can not wait to see how everyone does in your upcoming events!

Last Sunday was the half ironman in Santa Cruz, CA. This was my second triathlon and first Ironman sponsored race in preparation for Ironman California on 10/24/21. I had no real time goal in mind, just completing it and improving on transition efficiency were my main focus. The course is really incredible it set along the coast of California almost the entire route with the 1.2 mile swim around the Santa Cruz Wharf. There were 1700 participants lined up on a cool, foggy morning standing in the sand, waiting for the cannon to go off. It was awesome.

Santa Cruz IM70.3 (6:32:12)

1.2 mile swim (45:24): I lined up with the 40-45 minute group figuring that was a conservative enough time with just enough cushion and hopefully not get swam over. I was wrong. They sent 5 at a time off every 5 seconds and before I reached he first bouy I felt like I was back playing high school hockey. WTF?! I was kicked in the head & right thigh, arms and legs grabbed and held, rolled over and cut off and I was getting pissed. I finally moved to the outside (something I should have done from the start) and got into some clean water. It was foggy enough that made sighting difficult so I just followed the crowd trying to find a good rhythm which for some reason was difficult to do. I finished pretty much on schedule and ran/walked to transition which was .4 miles from the beach. Just enough time for the fog & sea water to clear from the brain and jump on the bike.

56 mile bike (3:17:57): This is such a great ride and you can tell the difference from Ironman sponsored races from local ones. Traffic was controlled the entire way out PCH and back. There is nothing like the peaceful sound of the ocean in the morning....until a freight train of tri bikes comes flying past!  We had the whole place to ourselves and it was fantastic. I think I could have pushed a little harder on this knowing what I know now but I was happy with my pace and my legs felt great as I entered T2. I was in & out of transition quickly but had to take a quick leak before heading out on the run.

13.1 mile run (2:10:23) The run route followed the bike route for the first 4 miles then turns into Wilder Ranch State Park. It was basically a trail run through the park on fire road that wound along the cliffs above the ocean. I really did want to stop a spell and take it all in but hey, we're racing here so I pushed on. I followed my HM routine and walked through the water stops sipping Gatorade and tossing water over my head for the whole race. For some reason I took some potato chips and mistakenly drank some Coke at mile 8, by mile 10 I was getting a side stitch and quad cramps were whispering at me. I guess this was the wall I heard talk about. Fortunately, this is were you turn to head home and I was able to work my way through it by just not thinking about it and focusing on my incredible surroundings & the people cheering along the way to the finish.

Transitions/Hydration/Fueling: I wanted to improve here and I did. Thanks @El Floppofor the suggestions to my previous triathlon. I sweat....alot and I am always concerned about hydration. I think I may have overdone it here as I felt a little "sloshy" towards the end of the run and I have no idea why I decided to try out potato chips when I never eat them even if I'm not racing. Seemed like a good idea at the time but I think it led to the cramping and later, sour stomach.

So that's it...sorry if TLDR but I want to get this documented as part of my Ironman journey. The next 3 weeks I ramp up my mileage in all 3 disciplines then taper the last 2 weeks. My body has been pretty good this week with the exception of Monday but that had more to do with an 8 hour drive home the day after the race. I found a great airfare for my wife & I so we will be flying up to Sacramento and shipping the bike ahead. I was going to rent a tri bike up there but after consulting with my coach it will be better to use the bike I've been training with for the big race and not make such a big change going into the IM. Tri Bike envy runs deep in me right now......

Have a great weekend Ya'll enjoy your training, we are fortunate & blessed to do the things we love to do!

Cheers!1

Amazing!

I'm from Sausalito originally, so I know that area and freezing water pretty well. So jealous! And excited for you... really sounds like an amazing race. Only race I ever did out there was Escape from Alcatraz... which, growing up on fearing those waters as a hypothermic death trap, was the scariest thing I've ever done.

some quick followup thoughts on your report since all I have of Tris is the memories of being a gear/technique-head...

how did the transitions go? anything specific that you did to make them go better/faster/less-befuddled?

sorry...potato chips?  where and when did you eat those?

sloshy stomach... were you drinking a lot on the run? what were you drinking? I think we talked about it- but I always consumed my main calories and liquids on the bike- both energy/electroylte drink and straight water. easier discipline in which to take in solids and liquids and to digest. I'd stop about a half-hour out of the run (except for water). run for me was water, gel or two (maybe) and an electrolyte pill. Did you take any of those, or was that your potato chip adventure instead?

re: bike... how are you set up? it's a road bike? with aero-bars? bento box? bottles on tubes, and/or behind the seat and/or in aerobars? My poor bike, sitting in storage a long, long time.

the other day when I ran past the first person I remembered I had shaved my chest and stomach before Sunday’s swim. I was self conscious at first but

Awesome work.

What sort of weekly time / mileages are you peaking at here?  Always dumbfounded by the thought of training all 3 things.
Thanks!

This week: Swim 2-3 hrs/5-6K yds, Bike 5-7 hrs/90-100 miles, Run 5-6 hrs/30-40 miles

Next week: Swim 2.5-3.5 hrs/6-7K yds, Bike 6-8hrs/100-110miles, Run 6-7 hrs/40-50 miles

3rd week: Swim 4-5 hrs/8-10kyds, Bike 8-10 hrs/110-120miles, Run 7-8 hrs/50-60 miles

In lieu of running long next weekend, I've been asked to be part of a relay team (La Jolla Cove Relay). 5 person team, each person swims a mile and then rotates around then swim another mile. Swimming in the ocean>pool and it's not even close.

I have a road bike (Trek Domane) that I installed tri bars on. It's so fn heavy but it's a solid ride and I'm comfortable on it. No bento box, just two water bottles one with Gatorade the other with Tailwind & water. I ran out of Gatorade and ditched it during bottle exchange for straight water around mile 30.

I was more intentional in transition. No fiddle farting around this time. I had my food(1 Crustable/2 Wafer) already packed in my bike jersey with  (2)Goo taped to my tube....no socks, no gloves. I wear compression socks for the run so I put them on under my wetsuit and wore them on the bike. Worked out well because it was really pretty cold to start the bike and having my legs covered was a bonus. I also wore my flip belt and had my salt tablets and Ibuprofen in separate pockets and took 1 salt tablet and 3 Ibuprofen just after the bike turnaround. I drank 1Hotshot in T2 to help avoid cramping. They had potato chips on the run along with Redbull & Coke starting at the mile 4 water stop. I think I chowed the chips at mile 8 and washed them down with the Coke thinking it was Gatorade  I think if someone offered me a shot of Jagermeister, I would have done that too!

I could be quicker if I could find a tri jersey/singlet but I haven't had any luck. I'm an XL in normal clothes, XXX in tri gear   Still looking to find the right kit and I know.....the clock is ticking.

Do you know what happens when you don’t run much for a while?

Yeah, you get bad at running.  (Ok maybe not BAD but weaker legs)

monthly HM, kept it fairly easy on the legs and they still hurt. Heart / cardio was fine as expected. 1:59:35. But the next 3 (oct, nov, dec) should be better.

So.....my 9 year old daughter has COVID.  She most likely got it from her fully vaccinated teacher who just tested positive on Thursday evening.  She seems to be OK so far.  Just some discomfort and fever that set in super early on Saturday.

The whole house has been feeling tired and run down the last few days (before confirmation) so not sure if we all have it or not...that's the only "symptom", though now everything feels like one.

Number one priority is getting people healthy and having my daughter be comfortable.  Daughter #2 is showing no symptoms but has asthma issues and it may hit her harder if she gets it.  Wife and I are vaccinated so, hopefully we dont get it or just have mild symptoms if we do.

Running wise, not sure what this is going to do.  I've taken the last 2 days off and my 2 runs before it (thurs/fri) I had to cut short because I felt terrible and my HR was out of control---now I'm wondering if it was from overtraining or COVID?

Kids are now going to be staying home from school so, that's going to be a fun wrinkle.

Hope she gets better quick.

What was the result of the rest of the family's covid tests?

GL getting everybody and yourself through this.

We havent taken any yet.  My oldest had a full up the brain one today at Walgreens, but they said they are super backed up and it would be like 2-4 days for the results...we wanted to know sooner than later with what we are dealing with.  All the rapid tests are sold out around us, but we got one from a parent on her soccer team.

The rest of us were waiting to know her results before getting ours.  Now, we will either sign up for the Walgreens test or try to get some rapid from somewhere.

ETA - I know there is a chance we have a false positive, but my wife is an NP in a peds office and was immediately 95% sure she had it based on her symptoms.  The wife is seeing tons of this lately here in Ohio.

Week 13 - navigating the fog

This week has been a blur. Not til I sat down and put pen to paper did I realize all I accomplished either. A noteworthy takeaway from each day too. All told I net 62 miles, which is the 4th straight week of 60+. On the surface the features center around Thu-Sun - an 8 mile tempo Thu (6:21 pace), 11.5 early Sat morning (7:37, aHR 142), then capped off the week with a 15 today (7:35, aHR 143). My greater takeaway's actually resonated elsewhere though. Sure, that stretch was what this week was built around - pushing myself Thu, comfortable but uncomfortable Sat, all leading to Sun...but that was really the only part of the week that didn't have my adjusting on the fly.

I set out Tuesday afternoon in 88/64 heat and full of work stress. I didn't want to do anything of consequence, but a brief but timely exchange of messages with Gian shortly beforehand refocused my attention. Despite my stress my HR was low throughout mile 1, so I started firing up the inclines as the plan called. Get to a hill, run hard up it. Try to keep my HR in the 140's otherwise. Some of them were longer than others, but I probably did a couple dozen of them...and they were therapeutic too. Glad I had the HR to reference throughout or else I may not have done this workout. Nor would I have pushed as hard on the evening hill repeats we did with the XC team.

Both Wed and Fri recovery runs began the exact same way. High stress and much needed. The difference is my HR was still low Wed and after about 10 mins I really settled in and felt great by the end. HR rarely jumped over 130. That was not the case Friday though. I was quickly into the 140's then stayed there, so I cut it short to 30 minutes. Thursday's tempo certainly played a role, but having that data available certainly aided in decision making. And had I kept going this weekend may not have gone as well as it did.

Time to move onto week 14 and I am very...VERY much looking forward to a weather pattern change Wednesday. One more SoS workout then fall is here!

Week 9

53 miles - 6 runs just under 8 hours and 1,636 cumulative RPE.  Good week and good workouts. Legs are loaded yet responding. Couple core and like 70 stretching/rolling sessions.

M - 6x 800, nice to go a bit faster (10k pace) and shorter overall workout.

Th- 2 x 4 @ MP, I took this for slam dunk on paper and needed to put more effort into this to perform.  Good lesson to sharpen focus.

Sat - long run with MP finish last 2 miles that ended up 15 total. Took this down the hill towards Annapolis easy and then worked it back up the hill and came to the marathon pace miles ready to go. Happy with this.

MP miles have been getting to mid 150s HR and been consistent. Not going to adjust training faster unless something really favorable occurs with cooler temps and upcoming weeks with stretched out SoS sessions. I need to tighten the deviation more than anything.

A bit freaked out by the 5 training weeks from here til taper but its time to HTFU. Upcoming week has first of 3 10 milers at MP that will tell me a lot about a lot Might shorten the long run this upcoming weekend due to travel and will prioritize the SoS days while away and go from there. Temps here look better this week but then will be in TX for another shot of the heat I reckon pardners.

Onward!
