In the unlikely event that those of you real men who haven't already quit the pushup challenge are looking for a new way to knock out some reps, I was reminded the other day how my high school football team did a thing called the "21 drill."

Start with 21 pushups and 21 crunches, then 18 pushups and 18 crunches, 15/15, etc., all in direct succession with no breaks. Super quick and painful way to knock out 84 of each.  

I think I'm gonna do this tomorrow morning.

Unrelated, the stupid on-again, off-again metatarsalgia in my left foot flared up again late last week, and while it didn't stop me from doing my 9-mile trail run on Saturday, it's to the point now where I can't even walk without a limp.  I'm taking anti-inflammatories, and it's sloooooowly getting better, but tomorrow I'm seeing a foot doctor with the hope that he'll give me a cortisone shot to knock out the inflammation once and for all.  In the meantime, I'm just sitting here getting fat(ter).  

I'm pretty sure that my bike shoes are the culprit and that there's just too much pressure on that part of my foot when I'm riding out of the saddle with heavy resistance.  Gonna make an appointment at my LBS to see if they can help me get fitted properly for some new shoes to hopefully alleviate that problem going forward.

I couldn't resist the $99 Endorphin Pro sale and got myself a pair.  So now, I guess, that's my designated "racing shoe".  

The Endorphin Speed pair I have already I don't know what to do with.  They were my racing shoe.  Can they be a training shoe as well?  Should I put them in the training rotation?

Speeds can definitely be a training shoe.  I like them, but they're not nearly as comfy as the NB Rebel v2.

Correlation != causation, but my calf injury came while I was running primarily on the NB 1080v10.  So, out of an abundance of caution, I'm staying away from NB now.

Will put the Speeds into the rotation.

They are actually designed to be the training shoe.  The idea behind the Endorphin line with similar styles but slightly different functions was to give you a set of shoes to get you through a training cycle and race day.

1)  Shift -- Slightly more cushion, designed for long runs during training (and recovery runs).

2)  Speed -- Very light shoe, very similar to the Pro (nylon plate instead of the carbon plate), designed for speed workouts (intervals, tempos, etc.)

3)  Pro -- Race day shoe (carbon plate)

IMO, there's very little difference between the Speed and the Pro and the Speed is a perfectly good racing shoe.  I think I like the way it feels better than the Pro, tbh.  And, IIRC when they first came out, the Speed is designed to last longer than the Pro as well.  So yes, start training in your Speeds.

just signed up for the NYC 1/2 in March.

totally forgot my spot from 2019 had been pushed back. 

now I have an even greater excuse to get my achilles right and start doing some exciting heel droops.

That works.

 Or do push-ups every time the packers (or whomever) score, in the amount of the score. So last weeks something like 7, 10, 13, 20, 27, 30, 36. That gets over 100 in many games.

I went to the Bucks game last night, got home at 10:30pm, and immediately sat down to get a little work done.  It was 12:30am when I realized that I hadn't done my push-ups for the day... :bag:

I know this isn't how it works, but I'm still going to make up the ones I missed.

Also, I got a steroid injection today for the metatarsalgia flare-up in my left foot that's had me sidelined since Saturday.  Next step is to get some new bike shoes and probably some sort of inserts.

 
Received my Boston confirmation today.

In lottery for Berlin, I'll hear in January.

Registered for Chicago with my time qualifier.

Awaiting NYC marathon opening for time qualifier. 

I doubt I'll do all four but likely three of the four will happen.  My wife only knows about Boston at this point.  :bag:

I routinely register for events, buy tickets for games/concerts, etc., and then discuss later when the timing is right (i.e., when she's been drinking).

Also received my Boston confirmation, and I'll probably register to run Prague in May (deferred from 2000).  I'll almost certainly run Monumental again next November.  And I'll cram a R3 in there somewhere, too.

Agree.  I'm back to traveling this week and next.  Plus the holidays and a work trip to Florida in January, this is NOT the time to bring up what I'll be doing 10 months from now.  Nothing good can come from that. 

What is an R3?

What part of Florida and what day? You could always run the Celebration marathon with me. What’s another 26.2 miles for you?

 
Cortisone shot yesterday afternoon, successful 4-mile test run on the treadmill this morning.  Doc said to wait a day or two before running.  Yesterday was Thursday, and today is Friday.  That's a day, right??

I decided that "The Wire" will be my winter treadmill running entertainment this year.  I watched the first season a while back and part of the second, but then I stopped.  Started over with S1E1 this morning.  Just 59-1/2 episodes to go...

Hoping to fun run a half marathon on Sunday morning with the president of Marathon Tours, who happens to have a place on a lake here in Wisconsin about 45 minutes away from me.  He's actually got a pretty cool story.  He was my divisional manager at Morgan Stanley (then Dean Witter) when I first started back in the late 90s, and we've kinda sorta kept in touch.  I want his job when he retires.  I don't know if I'm qualified (probably not), but I'm totally serious about that. Anyway, weather is supposed to be miserable (temps in the mid-30s with wind and rain), and he'll be running way more slowly than I'd like, but it might be worth it to hang out with him for a couple of hours.  Haven't registered yet, so we'll see.

That is an interesting story!  Make sure the mrs. is on board with the bolded.  I could see that being the case since she has an international perspective.

 
I thought I was keeping in decent shape on the bike with outdoor riding and throwing in the occasional something of substance on a weekday and a long ride on the weekend.  Anyway, now that I'm back riding indoors, the numbers weren't backing it up.  Not that I mind - with no races per se, my goals are just to simply to continue to ride and stay in shape; whatever that means at any given moment. 

Did a race this morning and placed 19 out of 57 in the C category.  Not a remarkable place, but I finally got a notification that my FTP (functional threshhold power) went from 196 to 198.  Plus, based on my time on one of the segments, I got the green jersey (best time on that segment) for the 2nd half of the ride.  I know this sounds like nonsense to most of you, but both were 'firsts' for me since being on Zwift and at least some validation of my work the past month. 

I'm at 4,800 miles year to date, so I'm targeting 5,200 goal for the year.  I'm also looking to get another 16,000 feet of elevation by year end to complete an unlock challenge by Dec 31.  Both of these are doable if I stick with what I've been doing the past month.

Naples from December 26 through December 31ish....depending how long my wife and I can handle my mother in law.  We are driving so need to be back no later than Sunday night.

Work trip is to Tampa, January 22-24.  I already looked as I've been asked to pace Celebration before.  Vero Beach half marathon is the weekend I'm in Florida and I could pace it, but my problem I need to work in Tampa at 12 noon the same day as VB HM, so that isn't happening.
