Ran a 10k - Official Thread (3 Viewers)

Meanwhile since I'm posting here... I have crossed the 210 mark and have progressed from having a belly but basically fit to being jiggly all over with a newly on the beach discovered plumbers crack because the belly butt and shorts hate me. And special thanks to 13yo floppinha for pointing it out.
Double laugh emoji.

Laughing with you, obviously.

Thanks for letting me know, @tri-man 47 , although I'll be honest- I was hoping it was for something like setting an IM PR and not this.

Sending all my love and healthy thoughts and prayers for every step of the way going well for you on this new journey.

If you get to wear an eye patch for whatever reason, please send pics.
No eye patch, but given the planned point of entry, I might end up looking like a tonsured monk. That'll be a hoot.

Go big or go home, right? Shave it down, and then buy a warm toque.

Surgery date set: Saturday, December 14. Two weeks …so taper time?

From Tri-Man Jr.

"My Dad is out of surgery and did very well, according to the surgeon. He is awake (and told the nurse to say hi to us) & in recovery, and will be there for about another hour before we are able to see him. More details to come this afternoon."

♥️♥️♥️

A story I was asked to pass along....

"When my dad first came to his room (we were there already waiting) he was pretty groggy, and he was trying to say something. My mom came in closer and he was able to whisper “Where’s Michael?” She turned, confused, to the rest of us.. not knowing who this ‘Michael’ is. My dad repeats “Where’s Michael?” to our continued confusion. A few moments later Wally’s eyes open a bit wider and he says “It was Michael who killed Sollozzo” and he smiles. Turns out he was pretending to be out-of-it so he could prank us with a Godfather quote when he first got to his room 😂"

Ok, now it's criminal we don't have a :lmao: emoji, @Joe Bryant . Because that is totally epic.

I’m home! Doc says I have a Grade 3 or Grade 4 glioma …brain cancer. They’ll be able to tighten that diagnosis down in a couple of weeks when the molecular analysis is completed. That will determine the plan for radiation treatments and chemo drugs over the course of the next several weeks and through 2025.

Glad the surgery went well and you're home! Lots of love.

Good luck on the recovery and prognosis. Cheering for you GB!

@Juxtatarot - I did not get accepted into Chicago 2025. I think my most recent time guarantees me entry in 2026 when I move up an age bracket.
That’s a shame. I guess I’ll be the only FBG running it. I hope you do run it in 2026. It’s a very nice marathon.
I will be there and @bushdocda was selected in the lottery (I believe.)

Not sure if I'll be pacing it or just running it for fun.

This is true. Stoked. Planning on a marathon a month prior so not sure what this will entail other than being awesome.

This first two times I read this I parsed it that you were planning on running a marathon every month and was wondering what sort of weird plans you had for 2025.
Not that. Maybe a writing for clarity course would benefit me more than a marathon course.

This study goes in detail on legal doping for endurance. All you need is a bucket of water at the start line.

Who's gonna be first to try this?
I might as well by the guinea pig. What could go wrong? This morbid humor brought to you by:

Diagnosis update: A number of you have seen this via text or social media, but I have glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), which is a Grade 4 (or 4), aggressive brain cancer. PSA: Don't google this. :oldunsure: I'll do six weeks of radiation therapy starting in early/mid January, followed by/overlapped a month later with several months of chemo (via pill, I believe). The hope and prayer is that the treatments and my strength are better than the cancer. But those odds are not high with a GBM. I've already heard of a couple friends of friends that are now at three years with glioblastoma, and I think that's encouraging? For now, I anticipate that 2025 will pretty much suck. And while this isn't the race I wanted, it's the one I've got. So every day, I fight. Today is Sol 10 (day 10), and one of my goals is to celebrate Sol 1000.

Please pray for my children, in particular. My daughter (36) has a strong emotional attachment to her 'daddio.' She has always loved to come to my races, and she has always appreciated the FBG stories. My son (38) has the obligation to "man up" and be strong for the rest of the family, including his three sons (8 and 6, who have run short 'fun runs' with me; and 16 months). My wife has a thick skin, so she's holding up well. She and I both have a large and strong network surrounding us, though I've got all of you ...which always has and, now, always will mean a lot. For now, I'm at peace.

So sorry to hear this. Thinking of you and your family. When things get hard, just remember you’re a BMF.

And while this isn't the race I wanted, it's the one I've got

This hit me right in the feels. Instantly took me right back to this moment.

I know my gb Robbie's words from that night will encourage you just like they did me, in a much bigger fight. I haven't met too many better or stronger people than you, so just keep fighting as we all know you will.

Thoughts and prayers to your family as well, especially your daughter.

It all makes me misty, but this bit in particular.

Hello to the denizens of the 10k thread. I haven't been in here in a while, but I still think this is the most amazing group of people. Will never forget how you helped when I did my "50 miles in a day" self-directed "run" (Ok, "walk"). I followed the thread for a while thereafter, and I love this community-within-a-community you have.

I've been in touch with @tri-man 47 even when I lost touch with this thread, in part because he was so incredibly kind to come and talk with my team about "disability as diversity," a topic where he'd won an award! That experience led me to admire him even more than I had from this thread. As some have said, truly one of the best people I've come across.

So I wanted publicly to send my love and prayers and thoughts to the 47 family and the man himself. That first sentence above...yeah, it just epitomizes who you are. And now I'm crying again from the beauty of the statement.

Run your race well, brother man.

You are loved.

You got this @tri-man 47 , of course if we can help in any way we’d love to.
I don’t necessarily believe that God gives challenges intentionally to those who can rise above or anything like that, although you’re definitely capable of doing great things including beating this. I do believe that challenges, trauma, even medical crap we wouldn’t wish on our worst enemy, can push us to even greater things as we learn from it and embrace life. I’m reminded of that everyday by the most joyful 10yo I’ve ever met.
You don’t have to run alone, you have many in your corner even if all we can do is cheer and support.

On a lighter note. I got a scale yesterday, mostly to measure before and after long runs and rides. Measured before today’s run, 188.9 lbs. ran 21, measured again, 180.9 lbs. body fat dropped 0.8%, body water went up 0.6%, down 5lbs of muscle. I didn’t drink anything on the run or before stepping on the scale again.
that’s normal, right? :oldunsure:

Yeah, you didn't lose 5lb of muscle. That's silly.
