Ray Rice may hold out (1 Viewer)

OWINGS MILLS -- Although Baltimore Ravens Pro Bowl running back Ray Rice indicated today during the unveiling of the new Nike uniforms that he looks forward to attending offseason workouts, sources close to the situation stressed that Rice won't be reporting until he has a new contract.

Rice has been designated as the Ravens' franchise player, at a cost of $7.742 million.

"I look forward to being there," Rice said today when asked today about whether he'll attend offseason workouts.

Rice has been consistent in taking the high road when it comes to the negotiations, but sources emphasized that the versatile star runner has no plans to attend offseason workouts until a contract has been finalized.

Rice told reporters today: I think progress is being made, but I know things don't happen overnight," adding, "If they want to get a deal done, we'll get a deal done."

The Ravens have a history of getting contract extensions done with past franchise players, including defensive tackle Haloti Ngata, outside linebacker Terrell Suggs and cornerback Chris McAlister.

The Ravens have until July 15 to get a long-term deal done for Rice. Otherwise, he'll play under the franchise tag this season.

And Joe Flacco? He wants a new deal? (last year of contract)

What about Ladarius Webb? (RFA)

Meanwhile the NFL.com Jason La Canfora blog showed only 42 players under contract and the Ravens with only Cap room: $1,751,638.00

looks like it could be Ed Reed and Ray Lewis last year with the Ravens? They will resign Ray Rice and Joe Flacco to new deals

The $1.7 million is under the assumption that they get their tenders signed. Rice wont hold out. If anything he'll skip training camp. I don't think anyone is dumb enough to pass on $8 million plus what he can get from an extension after another great season. Heck, BLT may even be playing for a championship. I must say that if the Ravens get a solid corner in the draft, then Ed Reed will have likely played his last down under his current contract. I bet that nothing will happen before the draft regardless, so any talk of a hold-out is just fluff.

I'm not sure what you mean by that...Reed's not a corner, he's a safety. And they tendered their two starting cornerbacks, so I'm really not sure where you're getting that from.

I mean, it's only April. It's not like he doesn't have 4+ months to work out a new deal. Something will get done, but it might make some

fantasy owners a little antsy for awhile.

I hope this scares the short-sighted owners into letting Rice fall in drafts :)

The team loves Rice. They will make sure he is happy.

i hop ehe does hold out and then they find a replacement who rocks the nfl landscape like the guys from 300 and yells this is madness no this is ray rices replacement and then runs through the endzone and finds a spear and throws it at the owner of the other team but only hits his earring and then the other teams see his sacrafice and bench their stars to play backups and alter the landscape of the league because frankly with my crappy roster i am going to need major upheaval in the league to have a shot of anything other than first place in the race for last so take that to the banks and if you have endzone tickets please try to place spartan spears accordingly thanks broharian the meditaranian

This is truly much ado about nothing. Like many franchised players, Rice will skip OTAs, but it's likely he will attend all of training camp even if a long-term deal isn't done. The bottom line is that something will get worked out. The Ravens always deal fairly with their cornerstone players and keep them around - Ogden, Lewis, Reed, Suggs, Ngata - even if it means they have to let some very good players walk, like Bart Scott or Ben Grubbs, Jarrett Johnson and Cory Redding this year. The downside of drafting so well is that it gets hard to keep everyone and you end having to play defense in free agency, rather than go on the offensive.

Those 42 players under contract include Rice's franchise tag and Webb's tender. Reaching a deal with Rice will shave a lot off his current $7.7M franchise tag cap figure. They're not in great shape, but they also have managed the cap effectively enough to retain their cornerstone guys. There won't be any salary cap bloodbath, but they have to keep drafting well or they could be in trouble.

Please tell me you have a blog.

Saw a similar post today about Wes Welker maybe not attending the Pat's OTAs for similar reasons. It said that if he were to attend OTAs, then he would HAVE TO sign the franchise tag for liability sake. I didn't realize that was a requirement to participate.

Not to mention, but didn't they spend a first rounder on a CB just last year (Jimmy Smith)?

Bucs should trade the 1.05 to Old Cleveland, reunite Ray Rice with Greg Schiano and let the Old Browns take Trent Richardson at the 1.05

Him and The Fantasy King. They're like brothers...where one went to school and the other...didn't.

What's interesting, is that according to the stats at ProFootballFocus, Ray Rice isn't really a very impressive runner. His value seems to most likely come in the passing game. Perhaps he isn't as valuable as he thinks and it's more the offensive line and/or scheme? Probably once he shows up at some point would be a decent time to sell in dynasty leagues. If the Ravens don't commit to him longterm, his value somewhere else could be drastically reduced.
