RB Cam Akers, MIN (1 Viewer)

Nathan Jahnke
Cam Akers ran the ball over 20 times, scored a touchdown and still didn't finish among the top-32 PPR fantasy running backs.

There was a comment in that tweet about Akers was constantly facing eight men in the box and Kelley was in on passing downs.

Did anyone else see this…? Is this a legit observation that explains Akers mediocre yardage?

Would we be talking about Akers performing poorly if he had also broke a TD run for 50 yards and had double the FF points?
There was absolutely zero blocking except for maybe 2 of his runs. They kept running him on first down most of the time. I think 15 of his 22 carries were on first down, and the rest of his carries came late to ice the game.

Kyren had 7 of his carries on first down for I think maybe 18 yds. One was on a first and 17, and another was on a 1st and 30. Overall, he faced way more passing down defenses.

Akers barely played the entire 1st half

He got 22 touches in 28 snaps overall so they were running him when he was in the game. He was definitely in on some of the first half series as I checked the game log after your comment. Maybe some of this is just about game situations and packages. They were using him to run at the end of the game and kill the clock. A single football game is a small sample to extrapolate out over a whole season.

Looking at his week 1 stat line of 22 rushes for 29 yards with 12 as a long (21 rushes for 17 yards other than the one run), if he spoke up about opportunity do you blame the Rams?

He’s absolutely fire and ice, but curious which side this one’s on as chirping for more playing time at 1.3 ypc isn’t gonna win you many battles.

At least there’s clarity now. With the Rams now entertaining offers for Akers, where could he end up? Indy? Minnesota?

Same place he ended up when this happened last year.
I'm not sure... I don't think it will be reconcilable this year. Don't think coach will put up with this TWICE.

I mean on his couch on Sunday waiting for the phone to ring
oh lol. Thought you meant staying on the Rams again.

Right, but there HAS to be something else going on here right? He has a history of this, and even if he sucked last week, they wouldn't just randomly make him totally inactive on game day.

Agreed. Feels like something is up and my gut says if the Rams truly thought he was the 100+ ypg guy who ended the year, they’d deal with the chirping.

What probably hurts him most is he feels like he landed in McVay’s doghouse again while Kyren put up stats and options like Hunter and Fournette are still out there too if not for other trades.

I traded him in the off-season to get off the roller coaster finally and so
thing tells me the Rams see the same thing.

Rams head coach Sean McVay said RB Cam Akers will be a "central figure" in the team's offense this season.

“He’s really capitalized on a lot of the momentum he built up toward the latter part of the year. And he’s going to be a huge part of what we’re doing moving forward,” McVay said on SiriusXM. “Cam is going to be a central figure in this offense. I think he’s priming himself to have a great year.” Headed into his age-24 season, Akers will look to build on a strong finish to the 2022 season after struggling to return from a 2021 Achilles tear. Akers led the NFL in rushing yards (512) over the regular season's final six weeks, logging seven runs of more than ten yards -- the seventh most among running backs over the season's last month and a half. Akers could be an overlooked fantasy pick if the Rams don't add Dalvin Cook or Kareem Hunt in the coming weeks.

Any reports that he did mouth off? I haven't seen any...

Not specifically and he’s not hurt, so something happened between him being talked up as a big part of the offense in the off-season and the deactivation today and speculation now of a trade.

For sure. My guess is that all week (or right before today), McVay was making it clear that Kyren was going to get the start or the bulk of the carries (either by practice reps, or by telling them), and that pissed Akers off and he snapped on him.

Anywhere from about RB20-RB25 off the board in most Redrafts

That's gotta be a 5th or 6th Rd pick at the latest
Complete whiff for most folks unless a trade happens, even if he lands somewhere like Baltimore, might never learn the playbook rest of year
This is a tough call but you might think about flat cutting him in Redrafts where you have 15 man rosters, can't afford to carry him and see where he lands
