Texans fan here. My hunch....hunch.....is Akers makes the cut and is 2A/B with Ogunbowale. I have a strong suspicion that Pierce gets traded soon. He's just not a fit for the system as much as he keeps trying and they keep trying. I think Akers' showing in preseason finally gives them the ammo to move forward for both sides and see what they can get out of sending Pierce for a better opportunity elsewhere (Dallas?).

Any team who doesn't run a wide zone he could fit into. I still think he's got talent, but the zone scheme is not for him.

Unfortunately the majority of NFL teams use wide zone as their main scheme and more often than man blocking schemes, with perhaps a few teams being a exception.
Personally I think a RB who can succeed in a zone blocking scheme can also be successful in a man scheme. Never heard of an example of a RB not being good at reading man blocking but good at zone.

Well if I am wrong about this I am sure someone here will let us know and we can all learn something from that.
I don't think a man blocked play has as many reads for the RB as a zone play has. It is a play designed to make a hole in a specific part of the defense and the RB is supposed to hit that point. If it's not there they have to either hit it anyways or go off script. Reversing field and so on.
There are some other schemes called pin and pull and trap plays that I am not sure if those belong in the man blocking category or something independent of man or zone scheme although I tend to think of a lineman pulling to me more man than zone.

Here is a guy talking about trap plays which he says NFL teams started using more in 2023.
It's still not clear to me if a trap play would be categorized as zone or man?
It does have the pulling element to it but it seems like mostly zone to me.
BTW the Vikings with Randall McDaniel would run trap plays all day long because he was so good at always being able to get the trapped defender.
They traded for Hershel Walker and Jerry Burns didn't know what to do with him.
Who will relay the play to the offense? They would send a different RB in every play for this purpose.
I also don't think Walker was much better than the other RB the Vikings already had at running the trap play.

Still looked much better than Pierce, who just looks like a bad fit for this offense. If Mixon was out, I don't think it'd take long for them to turn to Akers. He was much more dynamic this preseason and also made plays in the passing game.

I'm asking because I have a hard time believing Cam gets the start if Mixon plays and I don't think Mixon has been declared "out"?

Well it's looking possible. DeMeco is holding out hope Mixon can play, but neither he or Pierce practiced again today. Mixon could play without practicing but I doubt that Pierce would. If they're both out, it's Akers. Dare will be the 3rd down guy. British Brooks is also on the roster, and JJ Taylor could get bumped up from the practice squad. I think we all understand that.
But Koffler made a declarative statement. That news would be huge, if true, if he broke the news... since I'm not hearing anything *definitive* from anyone else.

I'm not liking our prospects either. The Viking pass rush vs our leaky OL is scary. Twists and stunts have been giving the interior OL fits. I'm sure Greenard will be plenty motivated against his old team.
I'm not huge on Akers prospects if he in fact starts, but one positive is that C Juice Scruggs practiced today. He's big for the run game, as the results of the ground game vs Indy were much better with him in there.

49ers came out and punched the Jets, a great defense, in the mouth week 1. I would argue the 49ers looked "not right" because the Vikings defense is just that good.

The point of a good defense is that they take care of business and take no prisoners. San Francisco is San Francisco and is freaking stacked and they took it to them.
Defenses like the colts went against Willis and got obliterate. Just stick with the Vikings ROS and you’ll feel good.
I can’t trust Akers, but I know it’s enticing. Just feels like a boom bust rb2/flex candidate

Mason performed to expectation because that is what the 49ers do no matter what- run for 100 plus yards a game. Plus mason is healthier and has talent.
The Texans can’t run the ball like the 49ers do because mixon is so much better than the backups. Mixon keeps the chains moving…Akers gets tackled for losses or fumbles. It’s tough to start but I understand it
Is Mixon THAT much better than Akers? I thought the Texans new run blocking scheme was well suited to both Mixon and Akers running style and that's a reason they excel.

I'd feel better about Akers if Juice Scruggs plays. The run game wasn't the same with Patterson at center last week.
