RB Christian McCaffrey, SF (6 Viewers)

He's been at practice again this week. Anyone think he plays? I'm forced to consider starting Jeff Wilson tonight or waiting until Sunday to see if CMC plays or throw in someone like Hopkins or Palmer or something.

Would you just go ahead and start Wilson and not wait?
He was at practice yesterday, and all last week, too. I think he sits again this week, bit I'm just a schlub with an opinion.
Would you start Jeff Wilson tonight with Mostert out and take the risk of CMC starting and not being able to play him? For context, I have Breece Hall and Gibbs as well (keeper league and had first pick). So I'll be starting Breece and Wilson as RBs and Gibbs in flex.
I'm confident enough that he's not playing or will be limited that I'm starting Mason. But I'm in the same boat as Wingnut.

Don't sell yourself short, Wingnut. You're a tremendous schlub.

San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey, the 2023 NFL Offensive Player of the Year, thought he would play in Week 1, but he was ruled out at the last minute. On Wednesday, McCaffrey explained what happened and that he plans to play in Week 2.

"My mentality is I'm playing," McCaffrey said, per The San Francisco Chronicle, on Wednesday. "That's where I'm at. That's how I am every week. I'm not lying. I think as soon as a player says, 'You know, maybe I'll play, maybe I won't.' That's not a good mentality to go into a week with when you're kind of on the fence. So I'm ready to go."

"I've never considered that," San Francisco head coach Kyle Shanahan said, per The San Francisco Chronicle, on Wednesday when asked about McCaffrey going on injured reserve. "I was considering [playing him] last week. So definitely not thinking about four weeks off."

I think it's important to note his words.

McCaffrey is smart. I'm going to guess words matter.

I think he means what he says when he says "My mentality". Meaning that's his mindset. That's how he approaches the game.

He even emphasizes, that's how he is every week.

Obviously he's not healthy every week. But his mentality is he's playing.

Fortunately, this week is easy with a 1 PM kickoff so we'll know early. Stay tuned.

The thing with Achilles tendinopathy is that it's tricky because setting a recovery timetable is difficult. It's a tendon issue that requires both rest and strength conditioning on week by week basis. The recovery ranges from a few weeks to several months. Since he's been dealing with it for at least six weeks, it suggests his recovery might not fall on the quicker side.

Thank you!
This is exactly how I read it. Many overreactions to him saying his playing week 2, when he doesn’t actually say that.

From my understanding, the concern here is not the calf but that contact on the Achilles could cause it to rupture.

Reminds me of the 2019 NBA Finals where Durant came back too early and ruptured his Achilles. They are being cautious for a reason, but I don't understand why they didn't place him on IR.

Maybe to avoid panic and a little wishful thinking? If the 49ers keep rolling, there's going to be no public pressure to bring him back, but I understand the caution. I think this will be closer to a 5-6 week thing and it will be because they have the luxury to wait.

From what I've read and listened to, it sounds like they are likely being cautious not because of a fear of rupture or greater injury (every doctor I've seen comment on this has said there is no evidence of Achilles tendinitis increasing the odds of an injury) but simply giving CMC extra time to give it rest.

I do think this week being on turf is the reason he's unlikely to play. The docs I've listened to say that turf increases pain in lower extremities when you have conditions like tendinitis, as in cutting and pushing off, I guess because cleats sort of cling to turf whereas they don't on a real field with dirt and grass.

I would bet on Week 3 being his return and that it's not a full load to start. By around Week 5 I think we'll see him looking like the CMC we expected.

I would actually be selling at 80 cents on the dollar.

Calf injuries that don't go away after 4-6 weeks, have little reason to go away after 8-12. And why wouldn't the 49ers at this point not be thinking about implementing a load management strategy here now that Jordan Mason has proven himself to be more than capable.

We all watched the monday night game and while Mason was terrific, but the passing offense did not run through him and the offensive structure in general was a different gameplan than the usual shanny gameplan. The FB (I'm not going to try and spell it) was out in the passing game a lot more, and Deebo was in the backfield when they seemed to run the CMAC packages.

They are not going to shelve CMAC, but I think Mason will get the End of game clock killing work from now on.

While head coach Kyle Shanahan dismissed the idea of placing McCaffrey on injured reserve earlier this week, Lynch did not.
“If that’s the right thing, it’s what we’ll do,” Lynch said. “We’ll consult. We’ll, first of all, see how he’s doing today after getting a good work session in yesterday, see how he responds. And then, all options now, as Kyle has said, are on the table.

Lynch on some AM sports radio this morning was doing typical GM politician stuff and was asked about IR and didn't shoot it down.

My guess which is worth it's weight in pocket lint: He's not playing this week, he's not playing next week, it's 50/50 going on the IR.

Listening to it and reading the editorialized quotes are vastly different.

Listening to it live he gave a very stock, “never say never” kind of response. But he’d been pretty positive prior calling it a day to day issue that can flare up and go away as quickly.

Media loves making mountains out of molehills.

Not saying he might not end up on IR, but that was definitely not as big a take-away from the presser as all the clickbait headlines are making it out to be.

#49ers coach Kyle Shanahan says that RB Christian McCaffrey had his worst day health wise yesterday in terms of pain. IR is now under consideration, which would mean missing at least the next four games.

Yeah that just happened.

But why then was CMC out there running routes today?

Weird.

Todd Gurley v2.0

Everyone said Todd was fine, but Todd wasn't fine. That Achilles is going to rupture and it's probably a game of months vs weeks.

Seems like he needs some kind of surgery or something but they're hoping he doesn't?

that was yesterday

That does not look encouraging.
Didn’t look like anything was wrong with him.
It's tough to glean anything from it but, to me it looked like he was moving very gingerly as he "jogged" back to the forest on the other side of the lake.
Yep. I thought it was all fine until that point. He trotted like I trot, and I'm damaged goods. Very damaged.
Yes, but how are you physically?

Up this to 100% going on the IR. 50/50 he's back by November.
