RB Christian McCaffrey, SF (7 Viewers)

They're now saying it could be 6 weeks of more he's out. How many days until he's just done for the year at the rate this is escalating? I've never seen anything like this.

He's fine.
He's a bit sore but he's fine.
He's got a minor injury but he's fine.
He's questionable but he'll play.
He won't play but definitely won't go on IR.
Ok he's on IR but should be back by then.
Well he may not be back for 6 or more weeks.

You missed one key milestone...last week when they declared, 'The pain is worse than it's ever been'. How does that happen when he's been doing nothing? So much smoke here

I don’t understand how SF is getting away with this…scumbags.
It's almost like they don't care about your fantasy football team.
Its been awhile since the football reporting community has been fooled this bad. No one considered CMC injured till before week 1. Then it just went from not a big deal to basically half the year.

The "calf" was there all along. The "Achilles" was new and late in the week (prior to game 1). More like under-reported and underestimated IMO. Is there a bigger red flag word in injury circles than "Achilles"?

Seeing “a specialist in Germany” now.

50/50 he’s coming back this year.
Saw that. Never a good sign to see overseas doctors. It means you're looking for a second or third opinion when you already know the answer and it's not what you wanted to hear.
Yep. At the let’s see what sticks to the wall stage.

I still can’t believe how this all played out. You can only laugh…and hate the 49ers 😂

I remember it's where guys went for stem cell treatment not available in the US. Adrian Petetson and Payton Manning went there to get treatment after acl and neck injuries. Both came out balling after

I hope he mainlines whatever “medicine” Herr Doktor has for him.

Yeah, this pretty clearly why he is going overseas.

On 95.7 they speculated PRP treatment.

I’m fine with that. Anything to get him back and effective.

Polamalu too if I remember right

SMDH...Sometimes YOU CAN predict injuries. Shanahan views his running backs as an expendable commodity and runs them into the dirt come hell or high water. His running backs have a half life much shorter than any other team because of what he puts them through. No way CMC was going to hold up to this mess. I was screaming for them to turn him into a Deebo/Welker hybrid and cut his touches but we all knew he wouldn't. Instead, Shanny kept his system and philosophy and gave CMC well over 300 touches when he's proven he can't hold up to that type of usage. It's criminal to do that when you had guys like Mason on your roster. Shanny doesn't care, he doesn't care if it's an UFA he's killing or the highest paid RB in the league. Dumb.

The light that burns twice as bright burns half as long - and you have burned so very, very brightly, Christian.

Keys you need to know on tendon injuries & impact of injections

•Tendon injuries don’t heal quickly or well on their own due to poor blood supply, especially if there are microtears or degeneration

•One key issue with tendon injuries is poor collagen production and disorganization, leading to mechanical issues of the healing tendon (issues with loading, and risk of future rupture)

•PRP injections can provide a high concentration of growth-factor filled platelets that can stimulate collagen production and improve organization of that collagen production, leading to improved mechanical properties.
Without help, your body often finds itself in a perpetual inflamed state that continues to get irritated with loading. My guess is this is where CMC found himself, with growing frustration.

•CMC is flying to Germany because they have the ability to produce a higher concentrated PRP which should accelerate healing, which I would assume he’s seeking due to frustration of how long it has already taken (and lingered).
With these injections, some athletes have been able to return within 6 weeks of the injections, even though remodeling is still occurring through up to 12 months. The injections should allow for quicker+improved collagen production, organization, and return to loading ability (eg: CMC sprinting, jumping, cutting.. load and tension through the Achilles). It’s not without risk, but return has been very possible.

—This is why I’m not viewing CMC flying to Germany as a “bad” thing. He’s seeking an accelerated healing rate. Best chance of that is in Germany, not the US.
And I do believe this gives him a shot to return after the 49ers week 9 bye, in the ~week 10-12 range. It really does depend on how the tendon responds to this treatment, but many of the outcomes have been very good, with a particular spike improvement close to 2 months (which would be week 12 if he’s getting treatment starting this week).
Tensile/loading properties will be key.

Another variable to consider is that a lot of studies discuss strictly PRP injections for non-elite athletes, so the hope is CMC is in the top percentile for recovery with this treatment in Germany.
Everyone heals differently, but hope remains. Stay tuned.

Tired: CMC is going to miss the entire season, isn’t he?

Wired: I trust Germany more than SF’s med team and feel even better about a ~Week 10 return than without injections

As others have said, going overseas to a specialist is never a good thing.
You are just hoping to hear what you WANT to hear at that point.

Pretty remarkable for him to have those injury plagued years to turn it around and play mostly every game and also play deep within the playoffs.

Was kinda shocked to see him just move on from those injuries but I guess the good luck has run out.

From what I have seen, CMC went to Germany to get a treatment that is not FDA approved or available in the U.S. It’s not like he went for 8 opinions in the States and didn’t like what he heard. He went overseas seeking a treatment that (hopefully) accelerates the healing process.

Reminds me of when LeBron saw the "LeBron of foot doctors" in Germany before coming back shortly after to finish the season and hit the playoffs 2 years ago. People thought he was done-for and he came back looking like the best player on the floor (outside of stamina issues for his age).

“Career ender?”

Holy overreaction responses in here. 😳
I have him in dynasty and re-draft. I would gladly call this season a wash at this point if it came with a guarantee that all of this was behind him for 2025.

Not a doctor. Just connecting the dots on elite 28-year old NFL RBs with injury history. We've seen things fall apart in a hurry before. Hopefully, that's not his fate. This whole thing makes me so sick that I have avoided this thread like a plague. This story has been nothing but a bad news factory. I can't fault anyone for bracing for the absolute worst just so they can be pleasantly surprised when he returns and looks like every bit of himself.

Agreed - I would say that's an overreaction. But there's reason to be concerned that at his somewhat advanced age for an RB, coupled with his workload and injuries piling up over the years, that we may be seeing a decline. I wouldn't bet against the guy, but science may disagree.

That report is just some doctors opinion, its not coming from anywhere within the organization.

The 49ers shouldn’t expect the NFL’s reigning Offensive Player of the Year back on the field anytime soon.

That’s according to Dr. Kenton Fibel, the medical director of the NHL’s Anaheim Ducks who specializes in orthobiologics, a non-surgical field in which stem-cell and platelet-rich plasma injections are used to accelerate healing for a host of injuries that include Achilles tendinitis.

McCaffrey’s visit, Fibel said, suggests he has a more serious injury, perhaps an issue that includes microscopic tears in the tendon, that hasn’t responded well to initial treatment methods and won’t resolve within a few weeks with rest. Given the nature of the Achilles, a weight-bearing tendon, Fibel said McCaffrey would likely be sidelined for at least a month and “probably closer to a couple of months” if he had an orthobiologic procedure.

Source says he is likely out "a couple of months" after his visit to Germany. Legit?

Chronicle

And even still it’s a guessing game as to how the tendon reacts after exposure to the stressors of an actual game.

Don’t see how it not coming from the organization degrades the legitimacy at all. The 49’ers were the ones that were all, “he’s good, just a little calf stiffness” then he missed a game, was placed on IR, and is now flying to Germany for treatment.

Seems like “just some doctor” is more honest than the team.

I traded for CMC last week in redraft, since I was 2-0 and the CMC owner was 0-2. The owner was desperate for his first win, so he sold CMC for pennies on the dollar. What I gave away would be worth the risk even if CMC only came back for the fantasy playoffs. If I get a healthy CMC in week 12, I’ll be extremely happy with the trade. And if he misses the season, I have no regrets because the reward far outweighs the risk.

I view the Germany story as a positive. “Couple of months?” Take your time Christian, and come back full strength before week 14!

Because it's just an opinion from somebody who is in the medical field, and it's being reported as if its fact that he will miss months when every case is different and he has no idea the extent of CMCs condition.

It seems like he will indeed be out a while, but until I hear it from the team, I'm not gonna listen to every "expert" opinion out there.

That makes sense if you didn’t cut off the part of my comment showing how the organization has shown nothing but dishonesty about his injury.

My point was that you can’t trust the organization since they’ve already proven otherwise. A random opinion holds as much water as the Niners brass.
