RB De’Von Achane, MIA (1 Viewer)

I'd be selling high on Achane. He's not even the best RB on his own team now.
I hear you, supported by Jaylen Wright's 0 rushes for 0 yards in all 0 NFL games he's played. You're probably basing this off the fact that Jaylen Wright was selected pick 120 and Achane was selected pick 84, right?

I haven't seen a lot of skill players move from Tennessee to the NFL.. Jury is still out on Hyatt and Tillman. I can't name an RB from Tennessee since Alvin Kamara?

But yeah... plant your flag in Jaylen Wright. What did Achane have yPT? 7.8? Mark Jaylen Wright down for 7.9. The only thing Jaylen Wright may do better than Achane is stay healthy.

I believe Wright can be pretty good. Achane will be dynamic until he gets hurt. Let’s face it, with his size, it is not conducive to a lot of punishment. I hear he put on weight. Will that help him, or hurt him, or doesn’t matter? I’m not looking at Achane when I think of Wright long term. I’m thinking more 2025 for Wright, but I also think he will have a role in 2024. Mostert is on his last leg.

Exactly...Achane is a scatback. He's being drafted way too high.

Is Gibbs a scatback too? Only 14 pounds difference yet no one has any concerns.

Neither are scat backs. Certainly not Gibbs after what he put on tape last season.

14 lbs, however, is not an insignificant number.

Achane handled the load in the s.e.c.

iirc his shoulder injury last season occured when a defensive tackle pinned his arm to his body before landing all of his weight onto De'Von.

Which is likely to happen again and again.
Impossible to predict the future
I can predict that Achane will be tackled by defensive players that will land with all their weight onto his body. I have no idea if it will injure him but that process will happen again and again.

I think Raheem is going to start showing his age more (Not to mention last year was an outliner as far is him actually staying healthy). Achane is quickly going to become the focal point at RB in that O imo.

Kinda gotta take all the Jaylen Wright talk with a grain of salt.... from what I've seen/read/heard, he is more of an eventual Mostert replacement and will likely not affect Achane's ability to produce, even in the longer term.

I only own Achane in one league (startup 12 team SF, start 2-4 RBs) where I acquired him for $29 (out of $200), so perhaps I have a small bit of bias/hope that he will produce solid fantasy numbers.

FWIW, I don’t doubt that Achane will produce good numbers. But I don’t doubt that the best combination will be mostert or Wright getting the most carries while Achane gets the big plays.

Makes sense - though if Mostert or (remains to be seen) Wright get the most carries, then they would also have a shot at big plays with the speed they have. If you mean Achane gets more targets and/or goal line looks, we'll see.

I mean Achane has more big play ability. Not that Wright or mostert have none.

I liked the Wright pick as a dolphins fan. However I am finding it kind of amusing that on fins boards a lot of people keep calling Wright the inside runner and Achane the COP back. I think they are making that judgment based on nothing but size. I see Achane as the more skilled inside runner and Wright having some running instinct limitations (albeit ones that the shannahan system has a history of mitigating for explosive backs). To compare to previous Shannahan system backfield, Achane is like Devonta Freeman, and eventually Wright is your Tevin Coleman type.

Not that important, but it was 11 lbs difference at the combine (5'8.5 188 vs 5'9.25 199)

Achane doesn't need Mostert or Wright to fail for him to succeed. He does need to stay healthy tho.
This. Even baking in YPT regression of over 2 yards, and only giving him 50% of the touches (a 10% increase over last year), and only projecting him to play 15.5 games still puts him as a top 5 RB. If he stays moderately healthy, he's a game breaker. You'll probably have to deal with some ups and downs, as I don't think they'll be giving him touches in games that are already won in the 3rd quarter. But the fact he's up there with Tyreek and CMC on the short list of players who can singlehandedly win you a fantasy matchup is worth his ADP alone IMO.

At his current ADP, Achane is too risky to draft. You’re drafting him at this position assuming he’ll get most of the carries and make it through a season without injury. There’s safer options.

However, he doesn't need most of the carries to match his ADP value. He can do it with less than "the most carries". He is that explosive. Meeting his value is solely based on him staying healthy..........which is a huge IF.

I think he is the best RB on the team. Can do it all including catching passes. He just might not (yet) be able to handle 15-20 touches a game as a lead back. He will be great for Miami in the role he is currently in. If we are talking fantasy then that is a different matter as ADP/investment plays into it and the debate becomes if he should be taken at his current cost. If you want to avoid then no issues here. But Achane does have top 5 upside. He is a guy that could be an RB1 but you have to pay that price and I can see why people aren't willing.

I have no questions about his talent and value to the team. 10 TDs as a rookie and a 7.77 ypc which is unreal. Yes it will regress but to what? 5.5 - a Jamaal Charles type level. He is a difference maker and is in the perfect offense. They have so many weapons that it makes it impossible to focus on 1 guy to shut him down. If they focus on the run Hill and Waddle will light them up over the top.

Miami RBs get to run against some very favorable defensive sets.

Two good points. His ADP is pricey and I can see people not wanting to pay it. But on the other hand he only needs half the touches to make a big impact. Last year he did all his damage on 40% of the touches.

Only 14? Seems like a lot to me when you're talking about overall size of the guys.

That's where I'm at too, I think Achane has top-3 upside, and Charles isn't an unreasonable comp, nor is Warrick Dunn, who would have been a ton more effective against today's defenses than when LBs were 260 pounds, and teams were less creative calling runs.

I honestly think he's being drafted pretty close to his floor. He was RB3 in PPG, and that was with 2 active games where he saw a combined 9 snaps. RBs typically experience their biggest bumps from year 1 to year 2.

Last year, Achane had 40% of carries and 53% of routes. No reason at all both those numbers don't increase (especially if 32-year-old Mostert doesn't maintain high-end play) and the carries could/should increase a lot. 50-55% is very much on the table. He's highly unlikely to get a CMC workload, but I think Achane can handle a lot more work than people seem to think. I think 200 carries and 50 catches is absolutely doable, and there is GL potential too.

And if people are wanting to talk injuries lets talk about Mostert who has had trouble staying healthy in the past. Behind them is Wright who I really like but he is a rookie. No guarantee he pans out. And then a few average RBs at best. Brooks and Wilson can run the offense but they don't bring the threat that the other three RBs do. So if Wright doesn't pan out that leaves Achane in line for increased opportunity. Even if he gets 55% of the touches if Mostert gets hurt that will be fantastic for fantasy.

For me the only worry is health and that doesn't bother me too much. He was sprinter who wanted to keep his weight down and is trying to learn what a good weight is to play at in the NFL. He doesn't get enough credit for his vision or ability to run between the tackles. He can also catch passes out of the backfield. Literally a back that is too good to be true.

🎥 Frank Smith on De'Von Achane going into year two: "You can really see a growth of his understanding of the offense... you can tell it's year two for him, he's really made substantial growth." (@MiamiDolphins) #GoFins
That's the lamest positive camp report possible.

“You can tell it’s year two for him because, you know, it’s year two, and he understands the offense more than he did in year one…which is nice.”

Having a hard time pulling the trigger on him in the 2nd round, early third.

You just know Mostert is going to be more than hanging around.

...and if not Mostert, Jaylen Wright.

One of these things is not like the others, and the Mostert prototype is what the Dolphins spent draft capital to acquire.

Just MHO, but I believe Achane is a one of the great storylines from 2023, and I think his 2024 ADP is one of the most misguided projections in Fantasy Football.

JMHO, JMHO, JMHO, JMHO, JMHO.

His current ADP is RB9. If you think it's misguided, do you think it's too high or too low?

RB 9 is super risky. Great talent, but Mostert has been good and then great the last 2 years. The oline is worse, they'll be throwing more successfully in the red zone to TEs, some OBJ, a healthy Cracraft. They had 0 TDs to TEs. Wright is an unknown, but bigger that Achane. Wilson, if he makes the team, is trusted in short yardage.

Unless he see’s an uptick in receptions I just do not see where the value is. With their stable of back’s I think they keep limit his carries. Obviously has the ability to put up points with minimal touches, however he will not be sneaking up on teams this year like he did in the beginning of last year. Exciting player to watch, but I will not be looking at him in redraft at his current ADP. I also think Wright is a perfect fit for this offense and has a chance to work his way into the rotation as well.

I'm starting to think that the FF community is overthinking this a bit...here is what we know.
  • His efficiency on the 9 games he played more than 6 snaps was off the charts. Ridiculously explosive.
  • In those 9 games, he averaged 14 touches/game & 98.3 YFS/game - his FF production 14.93 PPG
    • By comparison, Bijan averaged 11.42 FF PPG.
  • His primary established partner in the backfield, Raheem Mostert is 32. As much as I'm a believer in workload being a bigger factor than age...this is ancient by RB standards.
Over the offseason, it felt like people loved Achane...then dove into his volume numbers and got scared off. But 14 touches/game was 1.6 fewer than what we saw from Jahmyr Gibbs, and I would consider the threat of Montgomery greater than Mostert. Alot of folks are also mentioning Jaylen Wright as a potential factor, but IMO, that's premature.

Is Gibbs that much more durable or expected to carry a bigger load because he comes in 10 pounds heavier than Achane?

While I agree that Achane did little to assuage concerns over his durability, it took no time to show he belonged and I'd be inclined to trust our eyes on this one

IMHO, there's nothing potential about Jaylen Wright being a factor. He was drafted to have an immediate impact.

Wright is as close to being a Mostert clone as there could be. Mostert is the prototype back for the Dolphins offensive scheme. With Mostert advancing in age, Wright was a surgical strike of a draft pick to keep the Raheem Mostert 'type' on the field for as many downs as possible/necessary.

Mostert is 32, Wright is 21. In a manner of speaking, they are a 25.5-year old version of Mostert sharing the backfield with Achane, and that reads like a Bellcow/COP, 66/33 split, to me.

FWIW, I'm drafting Mostert and Achane only if they can be part of my Flex Committee, not as a weekly starter I need to rely on.
When I draft Mostert, I am certainly looking to handcuff him with Wright.
I am drafting Wright anywhere I can get my hands on him. A Mostert injury shoots him to the moon, IMHO.

IDK. I respect that line of thinking but fourth round & fifth RB off the board are kind of in that middle ground of team intent. He feels just as likely to have an "immediate impact" on special teams and be mostly a safety net at the RB position.

What's wrong with pairing either Miami RB with Wright?
I think Raheem Moestert will be used no more than 10-12 touches per game, they want to try and keep him fresh for the stretch run
I like Achane but an injury to either Devon or Raheem and suddenly Jaylen Wright gets a nice chunk of the offense.

The Miami Offensive Line is the one thing that should scare everyone but we'll see how it shakes out
