RB Derrius Guice, Free Agent (2 Viewers)

Rumor is Trent will report, then sit out every game and forfeit his paycheck to accrue his season and move on
I am skeptical. He forfeits about 5.5 million dollars and is on the books for 14 million next year. So if he sits ext year too he will be giving up a total of 25 million to be a FA at 32 and sign a deal maybe worth slightly more?

I'd guess he's hoping to get traded in the off season.

It's a business for all, and some owner will find his services worth the price, but I kind of would prefer if owners saw a player making good money, who refuses to play, and decided he wasn't worth adding to a team.

Having a hard time seeing the value this year for this guy in redraft.

First, you have to hold through the bye until week 11. Then, who knows if he splits with AP. Plus, the whole team in general could be a complete dumpster fire if Haskins takes over.

Will be a hard guy to trust.

Stranger lightnings in a bottle have been found, but having a hard time seeing it with other options available and only limited roster spots.
I agree. This may be terrible advice, but with an unstable quarterback, line, and touch distribution this seems like better left elsewhere.

Of course, come Wk 13, Callahan could have me eating these words. But Adrian Peterson, Guice, Thompson all adds up into division of the pie with potentially stacked Haskins boxes. That's not a Baskin Robbins stack. Nothing sugary sweet 'bout that.

In a deep league, I added him off waivers in redraft

i don’t think I would have given anything of value for him

i gave up on Ajayi (deep league) to get him (and dropped three spots in the order)  and wondered if that was even a mistake, if that give you a sense of his value

Guice is the future for this team, but this team doesn't have a bright future ahead of it. This season is a total wash, and AP is playing well enough to justify not throwing your recently healed RB of the future out for more punishment.

I don't think Guice has any real redraft value, unless you're in a super deep league and want a really bad lottery ticket option.

So we don't think this guy takes hold of the job? Add on he's on a bad team. Trying to gauge his value, if any.
I think he takes the lead back job fairly easily. Don’t really see what the Redskins have to gain by rolling out AP. I don’t think Guice has done enough to earn “protect future asset” status. They need to see if he can stay healthy for a few games and get a glimpse at what they have in him if he does. Others seem to disagree with that. Let’s see what happens.

If he's healthy he plays, a lot.  They need to see what he is so they can decide what to do in a loaded 2020 draft.  Worst thing would be so sit there in the 2nd round and pass on Swift because they think maybe Guice might possibly be a potential viable upside guy.

Agreed and after the bye he has some absolute cupcakes on the schedule too. Lions, Panthers, Packers and Giants still to go.

Hard to have confidence in Washington's medical staff. Love Guice's talent and he's a hard worker. But won't be shocked if he sustains another injury this season. That O-line is terrible and won't be getting Trent Williams back.

Meh

Say Guice stays healthy for 5 games....do you still pass on Swift?

They have too many needs to zero in on anyone.

Just guessing here, but other than haskins, McLarin, Allen, Payne, and Collins, is there anyone they shouldn't consider replacing? I'd think RB is one of their lowest priorities.

They noticed the growth, but told him it was nothing so he'd avoid surgery and keep playing for them. Cancer, being cancer, got worse without treatment. I think the team doctors figured by the time it killed him, he'd be cut or retired, so why bother?
Look I love the Skins but hate Snyder, Allen as much as anyone...but that is really a stretch saying that. We don’t truly know if the doctors thought that way. Allen might be an idiot, and Snyder too...but I doubt any doctor is that cold and calculated about a players life...at least I pray not.

So the team doctors are responsible for his cancer? Like they injected him with cancer?
Doctors make mistakes. My sister in law was told a growth was benign only to find out it was cancerous a year later when she opted to have it removed anyways.

She is not a professional athlete.

This notion that they purposely told him it was nothing is absurd

He's pretty sure the team doctors are responsible for his cancer. I don't see why he should have to suit up for that organization.
What cancer? Everything I read said it was benign?

Oh man, just saw the updates. Really does change everything for me.

Absolutely correct they weren't cold and calculating, they were merely incompetent.

Washington activated RB Derrius Guice (knee) from the injured reserve list Wednesday.

Guice posted 10/18 rushing and 3/20 receiving in Week 1 prior to being placed on injured reserve. Adrian Peterson, however, was also healthy scratched under Jay Gruden for that one. Presumably fully healthy out of the bye, Guice remains a thin play at his position given Washington's offensive woes with rookie Dwayne Haskins under center (behind shoddy protection). He'll be an RB3/4 if gifted Chris Thompson's pass-catching role over the second half of the season.

It will remain to be seen how the carries will be split here -- the most intriguing backfield for ROS to me after CLE with the return of Hunt.

That said, I believe Guice gets the majority share of carries -- ADP and CT don't go away, but I think the team will want to lean on Guice to see what they have, and if he performs to expected talent level, he can absolutely be a flex/RB2 ROS.

If guys like Lindsay and Howard are Top 15 rushers by yardage on cruddy offenses/split backfields, I think there is reason to beleive Guice can be successful on a clearly bad WAS team, even in a split backfield, if he gets some modicum of volume share -- and performs well with it.

That's what I'm gambling on, anyway.

With you on this.   I'm going to try to add Guice this week.

I have him on my dynasty team and I picked him up a couple weeks ago in redraft.   I have super duper low expectations.   This board seems like it the only place that really loves him (for the most part), other owners In my circle have zero interest.   I hope this board is right!

At some point, WASH has to figure out what they have in him. Can't find that out on 25 or 30 carries a season. He needs to play. Season is a lost cause anyways, so good time to audition these younger players.

If Guice was activated from IR on Wednesday, how come he still shows IR status on Yahoo leagues on Friday night?

He shows as active in both my yahoo leagues

Well, in our Yahoo league we have 4 bench and 1 IR positiion. The manager that owns Guice still has him in the IR spot while also doing other activity. It just reads IR GUICE. Other managers are asking me, the commish, how come and just because of a bye doesn't matter either. Anyway, I'm sure Guice owners are hoping for a little dividend payout.

Anyone else that uses an IR spot see this?

Matter of fact i experienced the same thing. Guice still in my IR but I’m able to make lineup changes.  I have tried picking up anyone off waivers, but im Thinking it would work. glitch in the system.

Probably just yahoo being yahoo.

I seem to be one of the few that doesn't understand any reason why the Redskins would rush Guice back into lead bad, workhorse duties. The Skins are finished... ADP clearly isn't in their long term plans... why would they want to run their oft injured RB of the future into the ground? To find out if he can run the football well? That's kinda silly.

is it? the 2020 class has some talented backs. all they have under contract for 2020 is a rb just comi g off an acl tear, and another rb coming off an acl tear and meniscus repair. they need to see what they have in Guice so they know if/when to take a rb in the draft. Guice is far from proven. The only thing he has proven so far is hes needed several surgeries over the last 15 months

I’d argue it’s as important that Guice plays as Haskins. The Skins have to know going into the 2020 draft if they have their cornerstones on offense or not.

But... Guice is coming off a significant injury.... after he came back back from a serious injury. I'd say it's a lot less important to "see what they got", than it is to save him from unnecessary wear and tear. It isn't as if they are going to run out and draft a RB in the first couple rounds next year, they have too many needs. It makes much more sense to let ADP take the pounding down the stretch of a finished season, in which they already don't have their best lineman,  which will obviously be the target area in their draft. I'd also say that using a more experienced RB like ADP will allow them a better look at Haskins.

I disagree. Of course the Skins, especially after losing Williams, will be targeting lineman next year. It's already going to be difficult enough judging Haskins behind this line, let alone putting an inexperienced RB back there with him. I seriously doubt that they'd be using a top pick on a QB again, regardless of how Haskins finishes. I'm even more sure that they won't be using a high end pick on a cornerstone RB, with this many needs. However, Guice's terrible injury history in his young career is already enough reason for them to reach out and grab a RB at some point in the draft... and it's also enough for them to think twice about rushing him into a heavy workload on the back stretch of a lost season.

Based on his inability to stay on the field is say that’s been answered.

and if there’s a chance that rehabbing for longer could help Guice long-term, then I agree it’s foolish to run him out there.

if it works out & he dominates, it only hurts their draft selection.

if, god forbid, he gets hurt again / has a setback, then they’ve further ruined what could have been a promising long-term asset.

seems like lose/lose to me. But then, this is the franchise that destroyed RGIII, so...

no?

Why not?

as you said, hes coming off a major injury off a major injury. his career may very well be over. they need to answer that question.

If they didn't have Guice, would you still think theyd pass on a rb in the first few rounds? This may very well be the case, we dont know

Sure you can give him more tim, but his tissue was finished healing weeks ago, if it was going to heal in the first place. Way more questionmarks after his most recent surgery than the ACL from a medical/anatomy/healing perspective

Because the docs say he’s 100% and good to go.
The docs are clearing him for his knee. What about the fact that players coming back off of long stretch if inactivity tend to get injured? What about the fact that he has trouble staying healthy anyway... and just missed season and a half with injuries? What about the fact that this season is over for the Redskins and there is zero upside to not allowing him more time to get healthy, or at least working him back very slowly? Let alone, the line is awful, and they are starting a rookie QB who could benefit from having an experienced back like ADP back there. Not to mention that ADP had ran very well since the new coach took over.

I don't think team doctors were malicious. I think they were (are) bad doctors and more interested in getting players to play than in diagnosing things. I don't think they had a clue it might be cancer, nor did they care. There's a reason the Redskins led the league in games missed due to injury in 2017 and 2018.

Thanks for sharing the article.  Sounds like malpractice i team doctors are responsible or this type of thing.

It's possible they choose to save Guice from wear-and-tear but I don't think we should discount the notion that the coaching staff is also auditioning for jobs next season and are going to prove they can develop young players, particularly Haskins and probably Guice and McLaurin.

I doubt Guice will be a 20 touch guy this season but I expect to see him see plenty of time on the field.

They need to address the RB position and upgrade it this offseason. Regardless of how Guice looks ros. He can't be trusted to stay healthy all year. If he shows up next year and beasts all season then it's even better but they need to have a solid plan b.
