RB Jacory Croskey-Merritt, WAS (4 Viewers)

Commanders RB Jacory Croskey-Merritt (knee) did not practice on Thursday.

Croskey-Merritt was reportedly seen practicing earlier today, but the Commanders have officially listed him as a non-participant. We suspect he was participating in solo rehab drills on a side field. With the updated report, Croskey-Merritt is now on the wrong side of questionable. The rookie running back was said to be feeling “a little sore” post-game, and his knee injury was “not considered to be anything serious at all.” Friday’s injury report should clarify his Week 4 availability, but at this point, RB Chris Rodriguez Jr. has decent odds of leading the team in carries this week.

I am kinda hoping he is ruled out. I have C-Rod and I think he is a solid start if Bill is out.

I don’t recall the Commanders being this bad about injury reporting. They’ve basically told us nothing about Daniels, McLaurin, and Croskey-Merritt.

What’s going on with their beat writers? It’s their job to ask tough questions, read the tea leaves, and get us the info…

Running back Jacory Croskey-Merritt (knee) was at Friday's practice after not practicing Wednesday and Thursday. Quinn said he had a good practice. "He's working incredibly hard round the clock to get back," Quinn said. "Ultimately doctors haven't cleared him just yet. He's absolutely doing everything he possibly can."
Beat reporter John Keim.
See, this is what I’m talking about. Earlier in the week the beat writers made it seem like he was OK, it’s just a day off or a precautionary thing.

But, this indicates that it’s a legit injury that the medical staff is treating. So, what’s wrong? Is it a knee sprain? If so, is it his MCL, PCL, ACL, or LCL? What’s its grade? The reporters that cover the team are terrible.

Bill did a TMZ interview on their off day (Tuesday) and was really jovial. I can't imagine it's anything that would keep him out of a playoff game, but their medical staff could just be cautious, especially with their best players.

Gotcha. So, the Commanders are gonna act like this is the NBA, and they’re gonna assign their star players vague injury designations and hold them out until they’re 100%…

Since when do teams best players come in on the third drive every week?
I wouldn't count on that always being the norm. It's WAY early in his career (obviously).

There's a ton of reports out of Washington that suggest they're super-high on Bill. Cecil Lammey had an interesting tidbit awhile back about a discussion he had with somebody in the organization who said they already view Bill as one of their top players.

Gauging a rookie by playing time early in the season can be a poor way of determining how a franchise feels about the player, especially a late round pick. There's typically a process rookies have to endure. It can take awhile to get to the top of the depth chart, etc.

Jacory Croskey-Merritt rushed seven times for 47 yards in the Commanders’ Week 4 loss to the Falcons, adding two receptions for 10 additional yards.

JCM remains the most explosive back for the Commanders. The rookie seventh-rounder now boasts a 29-172-2 (5.9 YPC) rushing line through the first four weeks of the season, and made his presence felt early in the third quarter when he ripped off a 16-yard game on the opening drive of the second half. Despite his early success, Croskey-Merritt is averaging just eight touches per game. He’ll be hard to trust as anything more than a touchdown-dependent RB3/RB4 in Week 5 against the Chargers.

The Commanders run game has a chance to be really good. I want to see more JCM. He’s more explosive than anybody they’ve had in a while. Breaks a lot of tackles.

Side note from @Wash_PR: They’ve recorded 45+ yard runs in consecutive games for first time since November of 1954.
By McNichols and Rodriguez, to be fair.
sure, but Bill has made something out of nothing on every single carry (or damn close to it) Again, his cutting and top end speed is so much better than the other RBs. What does the staff have to lose by giving him 20 carries and see what happens? He's yet to fumble, and while he's not the greatest pass blocker yet, he's not getting anyone killed either.

In my opinion none of the backs have distinguished themselves as head-and-shoulders better than the other 2. If one of them eventually does, then he'll likely get more touches. McNichol and Rodriguez have the 2 long breakaway runs, so I'm not sure I'm seeing Bill being faster than them on the playing field. And he does have to get better at blocking. I'm rooting for the guy, but I don't see him as having earned the biggest role yet.

I think they're likely to keep using all 3 all season. Their run game works, especially when Daniels is playing, and their passing game currently needs some help, so the more they run, the better.

PFF has Bill with the highest grade in Running (not the top overall RB because he's lower in receiving and blocking), yet he's 40th in rush attempts.
Thank you for posting this. I don't know how many people are watching his carries vs the box score, but we haven't had a RB this dynamic since early Portis years. I mean Rodriguez has solid numbers the last 2 games but come on, the big run vs the Raiders was PITIFUL tackling, he just went straight ahead, that wasn't about vision or cutting. But you watch replays and Bill is cutting on a dime (without losing much momentum) and he's finding lanes that aren't obvious. That's what separates him from the other backs IMO.

I believe Bill is actually underrated. Washington is evidently going to slow-play his development, but this cat has let's just say...unique traits. I first came across Bill late March/early April. I can't remember how I found out about him, but the YouTube vid of his highlights was an eye-opener. Why had I never heard of JCM? It wasn't hard to answer that question once I dug a little bit, but I've never been so high on a deep sleeper.

Bill has the talent, but he might have a ways to go. There's still a lot at play. For one, CRod is no slouch. This may sound like blasphemy, but I think Bill's raw ability is as good as any RB in this class. I'm also really high on Ollie. This was a weird year for me in that I liked a couple late-rounders about as much as I liked the top-ranked guys on talent, alone.

I'm excited to see Bill's development. Maybe Washington speeds up the process with the loss...or maybe not. Either way, it's likely to be a fun ride.

Wish it equated to a few more FF points, maybe the second half of the season will be more fruitful.
It almost has to, right? Daniels gets the offense going a bit, young back makes some plays and earns the trust. The 2nd half of the year is usually when rookie backs really get a chance to shine.

Not exactly sure what they’re waiting for…but ok.
I'm not sure what the coaches are waiting for either. Maybe they're trying to give him a growth path so he can build confidence? Or maybe they don't trust him very much?

I have no idea and it's weird to not play him when he's actually the most effective RB in the league right now.

Well the limited usage could be playing a major role in his effectiveness.
