49ers signed RB Jacques Patrick.
Patrick had been on the Bengals' practice squad before the running back-needy Niners came calling. The 49ers backfield has been ravaged by injuries -- a tradition like no other -- over the season's first two weeks, forcing the team to seek backfield help wherever they can find it. Patrick, an enormous 6'3", 236 pound back out of Florida State, could see decent run in the coming weeks with JaMychal Hasty (ankle) and Trey Sermon (concussion) highly questionable for Week 3. Elijah Mitchell is dealing with a shoulder injury that could limit him in practice this week. In five XFL games in 2020, Patrick rushed for 254 yards on 60 carries (4.2 YPC) and two touchdowns. He caught five passes for 49 yards. Patrick played for the Bengals in the 2021 preseason, rushing for 156 yards and a touchdown on 31 attempts (5 YPC). Patrick should be added in deeper formats.

In all seriousness, new 49ers RB Jacques Patrick has some serious size. Even though he is down to about 228 pounds right now, that’s much bigger than NFL perimeter defenders and it’ll be interested to see them work to bring him down if Shanahan schemes some space
RIP Jacques Patrick, SF
Yeah I suppose if you have room at the end of a deep dynasty league, why not? But this guy does not look like an NFL level athlete.Waldman has some decent things to say about Patrick. I don’t want any part of this 8-man running back room though.
Actually has pretty quick feet for a big dude. Not going to set records in the forty though.Yeah I suppose if you have room at the end of a deep dynasty league, why not? But this guy does not look like an NFL level athlete.
Perhaps, not at his pro day he didn't. Not sure why but his shuttle and 3 cone scores there were worse than his 40 time.Actually has pretty quick feet for a big dude. Not going to set records in the forty though.
I just think he’s not that athletic. Best attribute is obviously his size. Shanny is the troll king for even contemplating running this dude out there.Ilov80s said:Perhaps, not at his pro day he didn't. Not sure why but his shuttle and 3 cone scores there were worse than his 40 time.
SF needs bodies at the position right now. But more concerning is that Shanahan doesn't seem to have confidence in Sermon atm.I just think he’s not that athletic. Best attribute is obviously his size. Shanny is the troll king for even contemplating running this dude out there.
I agree that anything is possible with Shanny, and as a Sermon owner I’m also hoping the biggest issue is he hasn’t gotten up to speed on the system.SF needs bodies at the position right now. But more concerning is that Shanahan doesn't seem to have confidence in Sermon atm.
No one should be at all surprised if a lesser athlete who Shanahan trusts more gets the lead role over Sermon right now.
My guess is Sermon is still having trouble with all his responsibilities at the position. Let's hope he only needs a little more time to get it all down and isn't actually Christine Michael 2.0
This may backfire against me, but while he was with the Jets, Cannon did not look like a RB at all. He had no instincts and is a weak runner. Now watch him go for 150 yards and 2 TDs this week.Ilov80s said:I would rather bet on Cannon, at least he is explosive.
Exactly!I agree that anything is possible with Shanny, and as a Sermon owner I’m also hoping the biggest issue is he hasn’t gotten up to speed on the system.
But as for trust, how much trust could Shanny possibly have in this XFL kid he just signed off the street? I could understand having him having more trust in the in-house options who have been with the team (Hasty, Mitchell), but at this point the 49ers options are a bunch of has beens or never were’s. If Shanny has more trust in these guys off the street or recently signed to their practice squad over a RB who has at least been with them in the system since OTAs, the outlook for Sermon could be more dire than we think.
Cannon didn't see a touch on offense until after Sermon went down. This may backfire against me, but while he was with the Jets, Cannon did not look like a RB at all. He had no instincts and is a weak runner. Now watch him go for 150 yards and 2 TDs this week.
He wasn’t signed off the street. He was on the bengals practice squad. Last year too I thinkI agree that anything is possible with Shanny, and as a Sermon owner I’m also hoping the biggest issue is he hasn’t gotten up to speed on the system.

Chris Thompson PSCam Inman
#49ers John Lynch on RBs
Elijah Mitchell: Very questionable
Trey Sermon: Looks like he’s going to have opportunities. (if cleared)
Trenton Cannon: may get some
Jacques Patrick: 'You’re going to think you’ve got John Riggins back there."
Kerryon Johnson: maybe p-squad flex
The truth is both of these guys are most likely total duds. This may backfire against me, but while he was with the Jets, Cannon did not look like a RB at all. He had no instincts and is a weak runner. Now watch him go for 150 yards and 2 TDs this week.
