Does he think he can outsmart the defense because of ego instead of using his best player??? or he is being told that they need to lose ??? It literally makes zero sense when your best player is averaging 9 yards a carry with the reasoning he gave. Sermon shouldn't have been in the game at all unless it was like 3rd and 8 or something

Pesonally, I think Steichen is one of the best offensive minds in the game, and he ran the hell out of the ball in Philadelphia with Hurts/Sanders & co, with a lot of play action. I just don't see how he wouldn't want to do the exact same thing in Indianapolis with the personnel that he has.

I'm with you on this. F these coaches who think they can "outsmart" the other team. I think Sermon is coming along nicely but man you need to have your best RB on the field in the 4th.

Why Sermon?

Sermon's only rush in the 4th was after Taylor had just had 3 straight touches and 2 long runs and was presumably winded. Of course I can't say that 100%, but it's extremely common these days for a RB to come out for a blow after that. I didn't see the drive so I'm not even sure if Taylor asked to come off or not.

After that it was all passing situations so maybe they have decided to use Sermon as their passing down back. Maybe not a smart decision but again not uncommong to have a different back in there in passing situations. Is Sermon a better blocker? (genuinely asking, I have no idea the answer)

Hilarious example considering the left guard blew his own block completely and that's what forced the rushed throw for the INT.

Edit: Obviously Taylor was terrible there and maybe AR could have stepped up had he chipped better but the tweet is implying the INT was his fault which is laughable IMO

In his press conference, when asked specifically about JT and pass protection, he said there wasn't an issue with JT pass protection, but according to the footballguys update, he now says it was the issue. What I want to know is where in this update does it say specifically Steichen had a change of heart and said this? To me it seems that FBGs is just implying Taylor didn't play because of pass protection, not that Steichen actually said it, because in the press conference he specifically said JT pass protection wasn't a problem.

Just hard to justify not having your best playmaker on your roster in the game in those moments. When you take your best playmaker out of the game do you think the defense is upset? Taylor is the one big concern as a coordinator. Let's just say he was out for poor pass protection, which I just can't see, but let's just say that was the reason. You think the defense then decides to rush less? No. They say, okay, best playmaker is out, let's really go after it. No one can convince me pulling Taylor was not just dumb football. Coach your players. Design plays to address weaknesses u see. Don't change personal to try to tape it together. Imo

JT got a lot of work in the first half and the start of the 4th where the other RBs didn't. His case is plausible as above he did have a fair bit of work in the game where the other RBs were rested.

Having said that, in PHI, Shane would use Gainwell in some 2 min offenses but I would argue JT is a better RB than what PHI had at the time. Sometimes these coaches try to outsmart themselves - no idea why.

Yeah, I'm not buying that argument.

Not saying it is true in this case but, if the other backs didn't play and weren't dehydrated maybe they didn't feel the effects. Some guys might just be more dehydrated and bagged. It happens every game - add heat to it and it is very plausible.

It's possible Steichen forgot Jonathan Taylor was on the team and he would have had him in the game if he'd remembered.

What we saw was coaches comment pass protection was the key focus and during that key focus, the team chose to have Taylor on the sideline.

We pay a lot of attention to what people actually do.

Like almost all the "our views" they are not things the coaches actually say. That wouldn't be "our view" then. They're things we interpret from watching the game and listening to the players and staff talk.

We don't know for a fact that's why Taylor sat. But it's what we think. For this one game.

I suppose you can read what he said about pass pro being the key focus and not specifically mentioning JT, and take that to mean JT sucks at it, but to me this falls short of implying Steichen meant JT is poor at pass protection. I think Steichen just forgot about JT since the RBs were not part of the passing game plan in the 4th.

I think it's pretty clear from JB's post that there is good reason to infer from Steichen's comments that JT wasn't in due to pass pro concerns.

The context provided by the OC makes it a pretty easy inference.

I don't think the video above proves he isn't good at pass blocking. That wasn't awful.
I think the play calling has been awful and Richardson just runs instead of dumping off. That is a concern.

AR is looking like a bust every team is going to stack the line and force AR to beat you with the pass so far he hasn't remotely shown he can do that. Won't be able to throw up and complete jump balls like he did vs Texans week 1. I can't see how Taylor can be a top tier back as long as teams focus on stopping him and not respect the pass. He's highly ranked week 3 so they are saying regardless of all of this he can't be contained even with defenses focused on him.

He got 23 carries and scored 2 TDs. Richardson only threw the ball 20 times. Not a lot of passes to go around for anyone. If you are concerned about targets then you might want to trade him away.

Making the most of his targets no doubt. In ppr would rather him move some of the rushing to the ppr scam receptions but 3.5 points from receiving alone is pretty good!

The biggest concern with JT's passing numbers is his target quality, even at a low ADOT. I'm beating a dead horse, but Richardson has shown poor accuracy this season.

Fun fact I heard from Dwayne McFarlane is he was out there for something like 90% of the passing plays. I never expected a ton of dump-offs from a running QB. But the threat of him running takes a bit of heat off Taylor. Maybe they can work some screens in or swing passes to JT to let him work. He's running well with the ball in his hands.
