RB Jordan Mason, MIN (2 Viewers)

Well he called kyrion was going to get touches wk1 and it honestly seemed like that was for sure happening until he got injured on kickoff considering akers had 3 touches.

I've got my trigger finger ready to drop Drake for him (Dobbins & Mitchell owner)... but still can't pull it yet
Better pull it before Sunday. He’s gonna get his opportunity and I think he’ll show up. Free Mason, unleash the beast!

just need a little more nudging...that & Dobbins getting on the field will help me feel better about the decision
I’m starting Mason over Drake this week if that makes you feel better haha

Then Wilson goes for 100/2. This thread is amusing.

Wilson looked slow. No burst through the hole

Perhaps, but my guess is that he will burst your bubble.

Wilson will get about 45% of the rushes and Lance and Deebo will get 45%, leaving about 10% scraps for everyone else, including Mason.

Shanny already said he’s gonna ride the hot hand. I don’t think that’s Wilson if he keeps getting less than 3 yards a carry

Mason will get 5 yards a pop

ok, but don’t be upset when the distribution I laid out for you comes to fruition.

Why would I get upset? This is the fun part

Trent Williams has seen Shanahan develop running backs over several seasons and no longer is surprised when an undrafted player flourishes in the scheme. The left tackle completely trusts his head coach’s judgement.

“There’s a criteria that he’s looking for,” Williams said. “I think he knows what fits his offense best. To him I don’t think it matters what round, or where he finds them at. If they come in and show the promise he expects, he’s going to feel comfortable enough to play them.”

Quote from Williams today. Take what you want from it. To me I think it’s obvious, they are preparing him to play this week. Let the dog fight begin for the 49ers top spot!

Mason is an unknown. He is a lottery ticket. He is worth picking up and waiting to see how everything works out. Hardly anyone, except those in very deep leagues drafted him so expecting Mason to come in as a third stringer after one week and become an RB1 instantly is absurd. Can it happen? Sure, it's happened before. Should we expect it and put him into our starting lineups? No way. If you feel you need to put him in your lineup, you got bigger roster problems than you think.

I’m in too deep now. I have “better” options but I’d rather start him during his coming out party and look like a genius than not standing by my convictions. If they give him a fair shot he will play lights out.

Mason reminds me of James Robinson in more ways than one. He has his same strengths. Vision, a knack for finding the crease and making the first guy miss.

Check his first run here. That cut right there reminds me of Robinson. That cut is nice and Robinson does that to people routinely once he gets going north and south.

I'm starting to wonder what it is about this "offensive scheme" that seems to leave a trail of constantly injured RBs in its wake. Every team gets injuries at RB but this seems like a constant outlier situation.

Speed backs who run with violent intentions tend to get injured in this system. I’m hoping a guy like Mason can handle more carries.

Oooh. Let me. I've answered this before. The plays in the wide zone take so long to develop that it's like asking your guy to constantly return kicks because guys get a head of steam on both sides of the ball. Think about it: the wider you are on the field from the hashes (where play originates) you get that head of steam going.

That means more injuries.

eta* This is why Deebo is so damn fearsome on jet sweeps. He's got motion going already before he touches the ball. You really can't or shouldn't be using guys like that on a professional football field if you care about their long-term efficacy.

IMO this is the issue. He's not going to get a fair shot this week. Mitchell went down and Wilson ended up on the field for 40 plays, Mitchell was in for 17, the Niners ran 68 plays total. Mason got 0 snaps on offense.

I know everyone thinks Shanahan plays games with his RBs, but that's mostly perception not reality. Shanahan is one of the very few HCs who reliably feeds his lead back until the wheels fall off and then it's next man up.

Wilson is the lead back this week. He's going to eat all the 🥧. If he goes down we'll see who Shanahan likes more among whoever is active this week.

I'm not sure I agree with this. Imo they didn't give mason any carries is mostly due to preparation. He had an extra full week of practice this week. Jeff certainly has the first crack, but if he looks pedestrian (which I think he is) then Mason is going to get touches.

I doubt that passionately. They had three RBs active. You don't put someone who is unprepared on the GameDay roster. Mitchell went down with 12:15 left in the 2nd. Jeff Wilson's first touch was at 8:43 in the 2nd quarter.

That's not a coincidence. That's how Shanahan rolls. The lead back eats, everyone else gets to chew the 🦴 afterwards.

ETA: Mason had 5 snaps on STs. 15 players had more, so it's difficult to argue STs is why he was active.

It was a really sloppy rain game could be a reason Wilson had all the touches. Indicating they trusted the vet more in those conditions. The problem is with Jeff's stat line is he barely ate the skin off the chicken and left all the meat.

I’m skeptical Mason gets more than a handful of touches, if that.

Wilson is a very capable back when healthy. I expect him to see a substantial workload in this game as well.

Also it’s going to be rainy. I doubt Shanny will trust Mason in a rain-soaked event.

So far from what I've heard about the weather is it won't be heavy and will be spotty. Nothing comparable to last week. I don't think the weather is going to have much effect on this game.

Reports say rain and high winds from morning to night.

I cancelled my San Rafael farmers market already. (My product is in cardboard boxes, and frankly I’m gettin too old for that s##t)

Not saying it’ll be as bad as it was last week, but rain is rain, and ball security is a veteran’s game.

That feels like an excuse that ignores an extensive, data filled history. Wilson isn't a world beater but I don't buy that rain was the reason Mason didn't see touches but gets over looked as a potential reason the run game was largely ineffective for both teams. That's fitting the evidence to the desired outcome.

Of course I could be wrong. I roster Mason (drafted him actually) and didn't pick up Wilson when I dumped Elijah this week so I hope I am wrong. I would love to be wrong. But there is such a large body of evidence pointing to Wilson being #1 as long as he is healthy that it simply should not be ignored.

My gamble is Wilson won't hold up for 8 games and Mason will get a crack at that point. But until/if Wilson gets hurt, he's lead back in SF.

Mitchell was running the ball just fine in the rain. I do agree about Wilson not holding up, he's constantly injured, which could potentially give mason touches. I agree Wilson is 100% getting first crack to secure the job. There is definitely a possibility Wilson looks bad and Mason gets touches this week. Mason should definitely not be started this week in fantasy but he is one of the more interesting stashes at the moment and I'm looking forward to Sunday to watch how it unfolds.

Mason reminds me of James Robinson

He reminds me of Reggie Bush.
Interesting comparisons. I don't really see the Bush comparisons. This is going back several years, but I would compare Mason more to Chris Ivory. Like Ivory, I believe Mason can have some success. He is a blue collar, hard-nosed runner.
Good comparison. Marion Barber comes to mind too.
RIP Marion
