The thing that actually concerns me more is this silliness that both will "Absolutely" play in a meaningless preseason game this week. A one game suspension would have been better than a possible multi-game injury in a pointless game.

It seems as though Tomlin is (rather stupidly) risking the health of his RBs for no reason. If one (or both) gets dinged up so close to the start of the season, Tomlin will likely (and should) get railed by the Pittsburgh press and the fans. You want to discipline them? Make them run extra sprints or stay after practice to do silly menial labor type stuff - but to put them at injury risk with a bunch of scrubs just wreaks of idiocy. All it takes is some not-going-to-make-the-team rookie to miss a block and get one of the two of them lit up (or worse).

Now, perhaps, Tomlin is just saying they're going to play - but plans on pulling both after a play or two. But is he doesn't, and makes them play significant reps, then he is just a dolt.

For those who got Bell late, kudos for having the ability to know what others didnt. That's what it is all about, being a step ahead of your league mates.

Some of us have more concern over a potential time share than a suspension. Bell only had second round value in July because of his feature back role in the offense. Without such a heavy work load, a late second round is a little expensive.

He's a knucklehead but that doesn't mean he is a bad football player. His career 4.7 Y/A on 579 carries is evidence that he runs the ball pretty darn well.

I think Blount is a decent RB. Yes, he has a 4.7 career YPC, but he averaged 5.0 YPC twice, and in those two years, his team featured good run-blocking (top-10 both years). In his second year, TB's run blocking was much worse (bottom-5), and his YPC wasn't nearly as good. His 3rd year in TB, he was replaced with Doug Martin, so even though they had a good O-line, he couldn't benefit from it. Pittsburgh had a bottom-5 O-line last year. While it's improved this year, I don't know how much, and Blount might not have the benefit of a great O-line opening holes for him.

Also, I'm not sure how well he fits in with the offense the Steelers have said they are trying to run. He doesn't run routes or catch well, and he's an average pass-blocker, at best. He would be a detriment to the hurry-up/no huddle offense they want to run, as he would limit their passing options.

Furthermore, he's not a great short-yardage runner, as has been well documented, even though his size indicates he should be.

Basically, he'd be great at running at the clock late in games when the Steelers aren't trying to throw, aren't running the no-huddle, and have a decent lead. I'm not entirely confident that this will be the case a lot this year.

Not sure the best way to punish them but I agree that risking both of them on the most meaningless of preseason games is dumb. What he should have done (IMO) is last week announce they will not be allowed to take part in either of the two remaining preseason games. Sure it isn't much of a punishment (maybe reward?) but you make a statement to the public saying how much it will hurt the team not having them working with their teammates (even if it doesn't) and you don't risk losing either to injury.

I am a little concerned about the lack of depth at RB for the Steelers. Both of these guys are an injury, one positive test or knucklehead move away from missing significant time and they have no worthy third RB on the team.

For a guy who says he doesn't take it personally when someone disagrees with a player assessment, and I generally believe you when you say that, you sure do fight tooth and nail to defend Bell.

He was mediocre last year, he could definitely be much improved this year being healthy and with better line play, but he was still mediocre and I completely understand why people are not convinced about him.

And Blount has, without question, been a better runner in the NFL than Bell, that isn't debatable. Blount is also likely a bigger knucklehead than Bell but the whole weed bust thing puts that a little bit up in the air.

Not a fan necessarily but I still feel he has run the ball better in the NFL than Bell has so far. Again, that is not up for debate. Bell has an opportunity to change that but right now Blount has proven it and Bell has not.

Bell owners...have you handcuffed him w/Blount?

They are used to handcuffs, thinking it might be a good idea although it will take away WR depth.

im not sure ...if he was so good why would tampa then NE let him go? something doesnt add up

Do you think Rashad Jennings is the next Walter Payton because he performed at a very high level behind a terrible line last year? Of course not. Do you think guys like Lamar Miller, Steven Jackson or Zac Stacy who all played behind poor offensive lines last year (Ellington too) are going to be world beaters this year just because they are behind improved lines this year? It doesn't always break that way.

I have never said that Blount is the better option for Pittsburgh but he has run the ball better than Bell in the NFL. If Bell comes out and improves to 4.0-4.2 ypc (or better) and the Steelers are winning then I don't think Blount will be much of a threat but if he continues with the 3.5 ypc routine and the Steelers are losing then, yeah, you need to be concerned about Blount.

I was actually impressed with Bell last year, at least watching him (and not just stats). Ran hard, surprisingly nimble/shifty, good hands. And this was on a struggling team while battling a foot injury.

Now, that's just my impression, but that along with the context of how he has dropped like a rock since the weed dui provides the potential for really good value. He's going a round or more later than he was a couple weeks ago.

I never said he won't be good but he didn't look impressive as a runner in any game I saw last year. He does seem to have really good hands though, which is a huge asset that makes him tougher to game plan for.
