RB Travis Etienne, JAX (2 Viewers)

And Robinson still looked slow as ever. Hyde is going to be actually be competing for RB1, and I can't believe I'm typing that. Meyer is not going to ride or die with JRob like happened last year. Just won't.

As somebody who was fading Etienne in all formats, this is bad news...he was eating up a middle round pick allowing another player to slide to me.

After what I saw of that OL, I’m not sure I want to bump Robinson up my board.

That OL was brutal.

I would not read too much into that. Granted their tackles are suboptimal. But cohesion is a not insignificant part of an offensive line being affective. The Jags returned all five starters. The two best lineman didn’t play last night. The center has graded out above 80% six straight years and was the top rated center last year.

Go to Sharp Football, PFF, or Mike Clay, and count up the offensive lines ranked 20-32 who are blocking for Top 24 backs. You’ll need two hands.

They were. I heard the announcers say there were like 2 or 3 guys out on the OL, and they implied the unit would be much healthier week 1. They'll need to be if that was the problem because yeah it was bad.
There was one play where within 1 second of the snap, literally every OL was on the ground, almost like they planned it that way as a comedy routine.

Never seen anything like it.

It’s a good point. And a rookie QB, and no Chark. They definitely had challenges last night. Left a pretty solid “dont draft Jags” taste in my mouth.

They put a franchise tag on the incumbent left tackle who I believe just graded out a career high 69.1 last year. These people do have names but there’s no sense remembering them, they’re forgettable.  They did draft a promising kid out of Stanford but I believe he has played about 72 snaps in the last three years.

First round RB, eh Urban.

I've gone back and forth on Chark all offseason. Although it is obvious from all accounts that Marvin Jones is going to be heavily involved, and of course so will Viska, now that ETN is out (for some amount of time anyway) there really isn't much speed on the field other than Chark. He should be back in time for week 1 and aside from all the fair questions about him, he absolutely is a weapon that defenses will have to account for. I think a lot of things need to come together but ETN going down really does hurt them. I dare say maybe bump Chark, though.

Good observation.

I agree - Laviska is their gadget guy, Jones the chain-mover/possession guy & Chark the field-stretcher.

the only caveats there are

1. Lawrence needs to adjust to the NFL speed. He looked a tick behind all night, even when the protection held up.

2. The OL, which has been discussed. It should be better than we saw last night, but now it has to deliver on that upside or Lawrence won’t have time to hit the deep threat.

There’s reward in JAX, but a lot of risk as well. That said, most of their ADPs are depressed, so the risk isn’t huge to FF managers gambling on jags.

If it's a sprain, then we can breathe again.

If it's a tear...it's over before it began.
Having owned Mixon last year, Cam the year before that, and Kevin Jones back in the day, as soon as I hear "mid-foot sprain" I'm like Grampa Simpson heading for the exit. I think it may be the most frustrating injury in all of fantasy football. With an ACL or Achilles tear, you know right away the guy is gone. With a high-ankle sprain, you know he'll be back (although maybe not at 100%). But MFSs are the ultimate tease. Look at Mixon last year. Literally every week there were rumblings that he might be back, but it simply never materialized. He will clog up a roster spot all season, and you'll never feel totally comfortable cutting him loose.

I'm not playing that game again. He is on my DND list (for redraft). I'll let someone else deal with the agita.

My concern with the Jax offense for fantasy is, a lot of things are different this year but will different translate to better? I had Chark last year. He was healthy for the most part but it turns out my league doesn't award any fantasy points for "field stretching".

Yeah - and the challenge with the "deep threat / speed" types is they actually have to be targeted enough to make that fantasy-viable. Tyreek Hill is the ultimate example of a successful field stretcher, but he runs all the routes, not just the deep outs & 9 routes.

My argument to that has been that on deep balls Lawrence >>> Minshew with broken ligaments in his throwing thumb. Or that Lawrence is expected to be much better at the deep ball. I saw a lot of open Chark last year and he *might* get hit in stride once in awhile now with TL. But I am far less bullish than I was a couple months ago. I don't really like what I have seen from TL so far. But it is too early.

I don't think Lawrence will end up being better his rookie year than several other rookie QBs.  His OL sucks and it all starts there.  He may have to run the ball a lot and he does well, so there is that.  He can't afford to lose more weapons.

Yeah, that was the narrative - but I’m with you. I wasn’t at all impressed with T-Law. The one deep shot he took was a floater & almost hit his receiver in the back (it fell harmlessly behind him).

A little more zip on that pass & it’s a catch & maybe a TD.

One pass, small sample size, etc but it wasn’t a confident throw. It’s preseason game 2. They’ve had plenty of time in practice to get that timing down. Weird.

I'm not sure I saw him do anything other than lock onto his first read every time. Never saw his helmet move. Typical rookie stuff but he certainly has the tools.

It also appeared he was a tick slow in everything. His clock told him to scramble & buy time as the pocket collapsed, but he was slower to react to it than he needed to be every time.

That split second timing stuff is also likely chalked up to rookie brain, but it’s an adjustment he must make, and in a hurry.

I would be all over Robinson if Etienne is out an extended time. What more does the guy need to prove??

I'll admit to maybe having confirmation bias. Before the draft, I traded him for a first, Dallas Goedert, and a very early second, too. When the draft happened, I felt vindicated. I still don't think he's a great back, but I loved him last year when he got 95% of the rushes for JAX when he was healthy. Gotta love that volume. If he gets that again, by all means hop on.

I think at this point it’s a matter of the coach proving he’ll give Robinson the volume to justify the excitement. He does love him some Carlos Hyde.

Sorry to hear that for all you ETN owners out there.  I was looking forward to seeing what he could do, even though I had my reservations about him. Thankfully only one share.  I drafted him in a devy league a few years ago and traded him in another devy league.  Having said that, losing Ronald Acuna this year hurt a lot worse.

I feel this post harder than most. And on such a dumb play. He basically had no chance at the ball and should’ve played it off the wall. He has a much better outfielder than that and it resulted in disaster.

fortunately, I’m still in second place headed to the playoffs… But it definitely stings.

In dynasty, I'd rather he be shut down for the year and come back fresh. And not that you can spin a season-ending injury, but didn't he have an insane workload in college? IIRC he is all-time ACC (?) rushing leader? 🤷‍♂️

Having the J-Rob cuff eases the sting, but man this sucks all around, but for him especially. Hope he gets well soon. At least he got paid!

I feel that pain.  Just crushing

Where do you take him in an all rookie draft now?  End of 2nd?
Were you expecting him to be so good this year that you would bump him up from a late 2nd to a top 5 pick?

If not then why knock him down that far due to the lost season?

That depends on your needs.  If it is a luxury pick I have no problem taking him mid first and stashing him (if you are a believer of course).
It's not a luxury pick.  Basically keep 8 guys each year so round 1 ends up being almost all rookies. Have pick #2 and #14.  Javonte or Pitts at #2 and maybe I still take him at #14 if he slips?

Well yeah if you barely keep any players then sure, he drops like a rock

I consider this injury the worst that can happen to a RB, along with Achilles tendon rupture.

Andrew Norwell their left guard is a name with mentioning. He has been pretty good even by pff standards which have quirks that put more onus on pass protection than run blocking.
