Just watched A History of Violence

Well, I shouldn't really say I watched it, since  three quarters of the way through I just started fast-forwarding to the end. I was really looking forward to seeing this but it was one of the worst movies I've seen in a long time. Ridiculous story, horrible acting, almost unbearable beginning waiting for the actual story to begin.

I can't stress enough how bad this movie is. It's a giant piece of crap. I have no idea how Ed Harris got nominated for best supporting actor.

AVOID!
I just finished watching this movie this afternoon. I was really looking forward to it, and I feel very cheated. The story sucks and defies all logic.
I bought it and it was okay. I mean, it was so hyped, so I guess I was just expecting more. The sex scenes were so talked about and I was really expecting something I hadn't seen before, but they were ultimately so/so.

The violence scenes were awesome and the special effects were great.

The ending was disappointing.

I don't understand how this is a part of so many top 10 lists.

:goodposting: You nailed the perfect review on this.

Jarhead=   A few funny parts, no action at all. Good insight on the life of a soldier Marine, and how lame and boring it is.
FYP and while boring at times, but lame? Pardon me?Otherwise, yeah, it's a "meh" movie

The Talented Mr. Ripley. A very good movie and well worth renting. May be even worth a purchase as I can see some replay value in it.
Very underrated movie with yet another awesome Phillip Seymour Hoffman performance.

Regarding A History of Violence:

While I agree that the film is sort of corney, I think Cronenberg took an average revenge piece and turned it into black comedy. While many of you who didn't like it may never see it again, this is the kind of film that gets better with multiple viewings.

If you liked this film, you might want to try "Ripley's Game". It's the sequel starring John Malkovich. It was never released in theaters, but it's a very good film. I was surprised at how good it was...and had no idea why this movie was not released in theaters. It's being shown at Ebert's Overlooked Film Festival this month.

Just finished watching "Best of Youth" a 6 hour Italian film. Takes a while to build, but once you get involved, it's very moving, very good...I mean you spend 6 hours watching these ppl, so you can't help but get involved.

Cool! Will add it to Netflix.

Go

I liked this movie. Kind of a unique telling of several friends' stories rolled into one film. Some great characters, quite funny at times. Great music. Smokin hot young Katie Holmes. Purrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr......

Regarding A History of Violence, I thought it was ok, but it seemed like there was a lot more story to tell, and it had the feel that important parts got edited out. 3/5

:goodposting: A nice film that flew below the radar. It's not great, but it's pretty good.

Okay, here are my problems with A History of Violence:

1. The descriptions I had read of the film had said that the guy heroically kills the robbers and then attracts the attention of the Philadelphia mafia, and we learn that the main character may or may not be an ex-mobster. I thought that was going to be the gist of the story, and obviously it wasn't. So I'll admit that this movie didn't conform to what I had expected and that may be biasing my opinion.

2. That said, the last third of the movie (when Joey returns to Philly) makes little sense and is too implausible for me to suspend disbelief. The story suddenly shifts from being a character-driven, thoughtful movie into "action film" mode.

3. The entire subplot with Joey's son and the bully was irritating. It was 100% cliched, it was never established why this one particular bully (who constantly has that cliched sneer on his face) is picking on this one particular guy. We knew where this story was going as soon as it was introduced. I mean, they already made a film version of Coward of the County; we didn't need another.

4. Unlike some of the other posters, I didn't see any humor in this movie. If there was dark comedy here, I completely missed it. Again, this could be because I expected the movie to be a drama, so maybe that's my fault, but I'm not going to sit through this film again to find out.

I wouldn't say History of Violence sucks. The acting was pretty good, the cinematography was nice, and the story has a few thought-provoking kernels. But overall I was just very disappointed. It could have been much better.

In the last month or so:

Serenity - decent if you've watched the Firefly dvd's but disappointing as a film, it was basically an hour and a half tv episode. At least fans of the short lived show got some closure.

Madagascar - Very good animated kiddie flick that parents would enjoy. The penguins and the lemurs are histerical!

Shaun of the Dead - Hilarious spoof of zombie movies. However, the first half of the movie is all subtle humor of stuff going on in the background, so if you don't pay attention, you'll miss it.

Borne Supremecy - As a film by itself it's very good, but as a sequal to the Borne Identity it really suffers. Reminded me a lot of Aliens 3 actually. The camera work by the director was awful and really hurt a lot of the action scenes too. If you are a big fan of the 1st movie you will be throwing stuff at your tv about 30 minutes in also.

Zorro 2 - Other than Catherine Zeta Jones to stare at, there's nothing worth watching here.

Murderball-

Hands down the best documentary I have ever seen. Even though I swear I heard it was a movie about wheel chair rugby it has been a long time since I put it in my que so I was expecting http://www.rollerball.com/index_flash.html :bag:

The traitor coach that went to team Canada is from Tampa, and there were a few pic's of him in a #47 jersey

I'll pipe in and disagree with the Madagascar. I thought it was one of the worst kids movies I saw- hated it (except for the monkeys). Of course compared to Chicken Little, it's probably a great movie.

Shocked by the negative reviews for A History of Violence.

I couldn't wait for the weekend to get here so I could watch this with my wife. Needless to say, my anticipation has taken a sharp nose dive.

I'll still probably rent it, but I'll have lower expectations. Maybe that's not a bad thing?

Watched a movie called "The Ice Storm" last night, terrible
:o Going to have to disagree with this.
The one Ang Lee movie I liked.
:o "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" down? I thougt Crouching Tiger was brilliant, and gets a lot of undue criticism. It is a beautiful film to watch visually, beautiful music, it's what I want out of a movie. You kind of drift in and out of a dream while watching it. The story is good and the acting I thought was outstanding, esepcially by the two female leads.

I think this was one of the best comedies in the last few years. Really funny.

It's a 30 minute short film spread out over 2 hours. I mean, I just don't give a #### about that chick's comb.

:goodposting: When I first saw this film I kept waiting for something else to happen and draw out a plot of some kind, but then I realized - THIS IS THE PLOT.

Loved Kung Fu Hustle.

Walk The Line was very good.

I saw some praise above for The Talented Mr. Ripley, which I thought was really bad. Nothing happens for an hour and Jude Law is too flaming to believe he's with a woman.

Curious, when you guys go to an art museum and see a painting on the wall, do you say "THIS IS IT?"

No - I love art and Museums but if a movie has a idiotic plot that must have been made by a two year old and is meaningless then I have to call them out on it.

Also not all art is good art.

Example: Compare the scribbling of elephant manure on canvas to the works of Edgar Degas or Renoir.

Okay, here are my problems with A History of Violence:

4. Unlike some of the other posters, I didn't see any humor in this movie. If there was dark comedy here, I completely missed it. Again, this could be because I expected the movie to be a dram
You didn't laugh at any of William Hurt's lines?

I LOVE Crouching Tiger. Poetry.

Which one was William Hurt? (Sorry I have to ask).

Explain
I thought it was a very good movie. All the characters were interesting and flawed. The acting was nice, I just didn't feel it was anything close to terrible.
Really? I agree it was well acted but I had NO feeling what so ever for any of the charachters. The ending didn't affect me too much because I didn't feel I knew the charachters well enough

Hurt Plays the gangster boss who lives in that big mansion.

Just caught 21 Grams. Very good flick. Not one to watch if you are looking to be uplifted, but Penn, DelToro and Naomi Watts are excellent.

Naomi Watts...
I saw this in the theater and loved it. Don't know if I could watch it again, though.

Good Night And Good Luck

- Nice cinematography, good performances. Not a great film. I think Syriana was more deserving of a Best Picture nomination. In this genre, I think Mann's "The Insider" was a better film.

Five Easy Pieces

- Not sure what I am supposed to like about this film. Sort of through-composed in the way that "The Last Picture Show" was. Ultimately, Pieces is full of characters that I either hate, don't care about, or am bored by.

Wallace & Gromit: Curse of the Were Rabbit

- I am a fanof W&G. Very funny.

Loved this movie.also liked the recently mention:

Shaun of the Dead: love Zombie flicks and this was hilarious while sticking to formula.

Go: always slips in ranking. Very good movie

and I really liked Crouching Tiger. Seeing it in the theater helped.

will rent Madagascar this weekend. No kids, so hopefully it is good for adults.

I thought Crouching Tiger was good, but way overrated.A better film in the same genre was Hero.

Yeah, I missed the humor. :bag:

I noticed his dialog was really stilted, but to be honest I just attributed it to bad writing. If it was subtle satire, I have to admit that I whiffed it.
