I liked the first Tron when I was a kid but it was a unique storyline for it's time. I'm sure it hasn't held up that well. I liked the reboot too but agree that it didn't have the emotion of the first.

World War Z was solid entertainment
I seem to be in the minority here, but I did not like WWZ.
You are?

I think there is a pretty even split. A lot of the criticism revolves around the fact that they took almost nothing from a source material that was rich with options. But even for a stand-alone zombie film that has almost nothing to do with the book it was still pretty much a paint by numbers film. Mediocre at best.

There's no "emotion" or "heart" in the original Tron.

Flynn is pissed because someone stole his stuff. It's could be renamed "How Steve Jobs Got His Groove Back".

Agree.

I knew long before not to compare it to the book and it still didn't help. I thought the zombies coming over the wall was cool though.

In my quest to see 52 (or 53) movies in the theaters in a year, here is my ranking of what I have seen so far

I was going for 1 movie a week, but issues in the beginning of the year have left me 6 (or 7) weeks behind. The reason for the 6 or 7 is I have Philomena on the list and it was a 2013 release.

1 Philomena
2 The Railway Man
3 Finding Vivian Maier
4 Under the Skin
5 The LEGO Movie
6 Godzilla
7 X-Men
8 Edge of Tomorrow
9 Captain America:Winter Soldier
10 Non-Stop
11 The Amazing Spiderman 2
12 How to train your Dragon 2
13 Bad Words
14 Neighbors
15 Chef
16 The Rover
17 Transformers: Age of Extinction
18 Transcendence
19 Oculus
20 Peabody and Sherman

There are 3 Riff-Trax movies left this year and at the end of the year they cram movies in for Oscar release. Should be no problem catching

The extended version on Blu Ray is better, IMO. They didn't add much but what they did really ratcheted up the tension.

That and the fact that Peter Capaldi was listed as a Doctor for the World Health Organization.

I don't know who that is but I'm guessing it's a Dr. Who thing.

Tron - 5.5/10

The original. I've never watched it before. And never will again.

That was a bad movie.
Still better than the reboot.
Oh HELL no. The reboot was a lot of fun.

What is WRONG with you? :hot:
You are an insane person.
In the land of the witless, the half-wit is king.

Nostalgia is the only thing that the original Tron has going for it. And that wears really thin really quickly if you watch it. There's almost no story, the editing is poor, as are the performances (although slack has to be given there).

It's a bad, bad movie.

Groundbreaking digital effects alone make it an important film.

The original Tron is not a movie that is going to hold up well. It was cool back when it first came out.

I had a similar thing happen with the original Nightmare On Elm Street. I loved it when it came out in the 80s. But I watched it again a few years ago with my daughter (wanted to compare it to the reboot) and it was horrible. Didn't hold up well at all.

Affliction

Nothing really groundbreaking about his 'found footage' type movie (ala Chronicle) but it was well made and entertaining. Relatively short (under 90 minutes) and a good if you want something to entertain for you for bit. 6/10.

Enemy

The premise seemed interesting - a man sees himself in a movie and tries to find the actor - and Jake Gyllenhaall is it. It had me hooked even if the ending was bizarre. 7/10.

Yeah, Nightmare had to rely on special effects a tad more than the other horror movies of that era and a lot looks bad now. Freddy running in the alley with super long arms is horrible, as is the tongue phone. The bed of a blood isn't as badass as I remember it either. Movie will still get a pass from me since it was one of the first horror movies I watched and the idea of bad guy invading your dreams >> bad guy slasher walking after you.

That said, I really didn't like the updated Nightmare either.

Would you guys be interested in forming a MovieGuys fantasy league? I imagine free might be the best way to go. Redraft league with an auction format. Might be fun to compete for bragging rights.

(Sorry I made the type so big. Just trying to grab some attention)

Watched "Joe" last night. Can see why the critics loved it b/c the acting is really good. Especially the actual homeless guy they got to play the bum abusive father. The guy actually died two weeks after filming while back on the street. Worth a watch.

But my god what a depressing movie.

There's implied child prostitution, brutal death of a dog, numerous scenes of a 15 year old being

physically beaten, and incredibly disturbing scene where a homeless man is brutally beaten to death.
Pro tip: don't rent this when your wife has promised : yes: It ain't gonna happen.
I'm thinking you should have put a lot of that in spoilers my friend.
Where can I find "Joe" I googled it and could not find it?

How does something like that work?

Yeah, not only did it ruin somebody else getting the license to, you know, actually use it, but even as a standalone flick it pretty bad. And I say that as someone who is very forgiving of big dumb action movies and has defended even the likes of Transformers on here before. And the Tron reboot, to tie things together, I liked.

I could start up a free ESPN league and then send all the interested parties invitations. Something like that.

I'm game. Movie themed names... have to go all in here.

Just watched Grand Budapest- 9/10 - really good film. Funny, entertaining the entire way, a little suspense, good cinematics. Great cast.
Is it the usual Wes Anderson fare? If so, i will pass. Not a fan of Mr. Anderson
It's funny that he is such a polarizing director. I liked his first three films quite a bit (Bottle Rocket, Rushmore & The Royal Tennenbaums) but not much since them (Mr. Fox was okay I guess). Grand Budapest is his best work since Rushmore, it might be my favorite film of his overall.
Dammit, I was thinking that I could keep passing this one by. They look fantastic, but I haven't liked any of his past 4 movies or so. I keep getting suckered in to watching his movies then it is this  for 100mins for me. Keep hearing similar things about Budapest though - much better than his recent work.
I have felt the same. Though Grand Budapest is closer to his most recent work, then say Rushomore/Tennenbaums, I enjoyed it.

Life Aquatic, Darjeerling, and Moonrise are lost on me.

3 Days To Kill

Action was fine but parts with daughter seemed forced. Attemtps at humor didn't work. Amber Heard was smokin in it. Overall average.

Her

Clever idea and Phoenix was excellent. But it really dragged in places and the ending was weak. Good but that's about it.

The new Godzilla is good.
:hifive:
Someone pointed out that there was too much people and not enough monster. But I already saw that movie, it was called Pacific Rim and I liked it. But this movie isn't the same, and that's more interesting.
If we were given more Brian Cranston I would agree however the main character wasn't interesting at all. And every time we thought we were going to get some monster v monster action they gave us a closeup of the boring protagonist or switched scenes entirely and gave us a silly news clip of the aftermath. It was okay but I was definitely hoping for more actual Godzilla.

The Hobbit - Desolation of Smaug C+ Maybe. I just wanted it to end.

And those amazing action moves Legolas did in LOTR, seemed so forced in Smaug. And Orlando Bloom is showing his age for being an immortal elf

Loved Rushmore.

Really liked Fox, Life Aquatic, Moonrise, Bottlerocket

Liked it ok: Tannenbaums

Saw parts of Darjeeling and just couldn't catch hold of it, so never tried again. Really want to see BUdapest.

I dig the styling, visual component of it and enjoy the quirks of the characters. I don't find any of it transcendent, but I've enjoyed his movies more than most I've seen in the last 10 years.

I'd never seen the Dirty Harry "The Dead Pool" before. Was more fun because of the cast: Jim Carrey, Axl Rose, Slash, Liam Neeson. Ending dragged, could have been 20 minutes faster. The toy-car car-chase was a bit goofy but fun.

Edit: how could I forget Dirty Harry's partner was the guy from "A Fistful of Yen"

That scene is just all kinds of awesome.

The Descent - 7.5/10

Not a big fan of the horror genre, but this one was pretty good.
Keep meaning to revisit this one. Remember digging it, but don't remember much about it.
it is a very entertaining flick.. the movie can make viewers feel a little claustrophobic. on top of that add in hot chicks & monsters and you have a good flick

the sequel wasn't as good but still worth a watch

7.5 seems about spot on for this movie
