Recently viewed movie thread - Rental Edition (1 Viewer)

Been watching movies too and from Jamaica...

2012 - Better than I thought it would be, which isn't saying much but still worth the rental...I'm a sucker for the disaster movies. 3/5

Pandorum - I'm a sucker for SciFi too...sort of original storyline, but the villains were too cliche IMHO. 2.5/5

Time Traveler's Wife - Way surprised about this one...Solid acting IMHO, I actually got a little teary eyed which doesn't happen a lot with me. 4/5...and totally underrated.

In Bruges -- I came in thinking it would be kind of like Grosse Point Blank, but it wasn't. There were some good parts, but I was a bit let down after seeing it get such good reviews. Not really enough of any one genre for me to enjoy fully (ie - a little action, a little drama, a little comedy, not enough of any). 3/5.

very different films, imo. "Grosse Pointe..." is a much broader comedy compared to "bruges".

I know Grosse Point Blank is a really popular cult movie. But I didn't think it was funny - and I'd call myself a Cusack fan.

Versy vicey here. I think GPB is my favorite Cusack flick.

In Bruges might be my favorite movie from 2008.

I like Grosse Point Blank a lot, but I could never compare the two. The only similar thing is the main character is an assassin.

GBP is probably my favorite Cusack movie after High Fidelity and Being John Malkovich

Say Anything, High Fidelity and Max are my favorite Cusack movies.

Top 5 Cusack:

1. Being John Malkovich

2. Better Off Dead

3. The Road To Wellville

4. The Grifters

5. The Sure Thing

Finally saw Watchmen. I enjoyed it but watched it in two sittings so hard to say if the 2:45 viewing time would have worn on my in one. I wasn't particularly fond of the casting except for Rorschach who was very good.

That's actually a really high review for watching it just once. It was one of those that started at 2.5 and worked it's way up to a 4 after multiple viewings.I couldn't rate it higher than that because of how much the love story drags out in the middle. Great beginning, great ending.

No love for Grosse Point Blank?I would have that/HF/Grifters top 3 I think
it's top 5 but not top 3. BoB is criminally underrated, I think, both as an allen film and ensemble comedy.
I love BoB, but I think it's precisely the ensembleness (is that a word?) that makes me downgrade it vis a vis CusackIt's not a Cusack movie, IMO

This is a very flawed movie. But yeah, Jackie Earl Haley is excellent as Rorschach. While I'd never see The Watchmen again, I admire Zach Snyder's visual style. With 300 and The Watchmen, he's created some effects and camera tricks that will be copied for many years to come.

I laughed out loud heartily a few times with the first viewing, so I've been a big fan ever since. Owen Wilson doing bird calls to alert his buddy while he's getting beat up at that bar is about the funniest thing I've ever seen in a movie.

Flawed in the sense that it doesn't 100% recreate the book (the early Minutemen stuff is squashed down to a musical montage at the beginning, the New Frontiersman stuff is not covered at all except for a brief sighting of the vendor and the kid reading the Tales of the Black Freighter comic at the end), and in the fact that Snyder felt the need to add in a blue penis, but not in the sense that you probably think it is.I'm not sure if you, in particular, read the book.........but those who haven't that continually gripe about what a horrible movie it is really bug me. It's a really good (not perfect, but really good) interpretation of a GREAT book.

Yes. I read the graphic novel when it was released in the 1980s. The graphic novel is excellent. The movie had some strong points. But I wouldn't recommend it.

Never seen The Grifters, Max, or BoB...guess I'll have to check those out at some point (although in regards to BoB, I generally cant stand Woody Allen movies)

Not that any of them are Top 5 Cusack film, but I think The Ice Harvest, Midnight In The Garden of Good & Evil, and Pushing Tin are all underrated and solid Cusack movies

I for one think Hot Tub Time Machine looks funny. Probably wont see it in theaters, but it looks like it could end up as one of the best comedies of the year if it lives up to the commercials/trailer

The Grifters is a solid con artist drama. Max is an outstanding look into Hitler's early days and failed art career. Cusack plays his art dealer. I thought that Midnight In The Garden of Good & Evil was awful.

it's maybe the best woody allen comedy in recent memory because he collaborated with someone else on it. it's *really* funny, imo. chaz palmienteri steals the show for me.

Agreed, def the best of the 3 that I posted too....your thoughts on Brooklyn's Finest regarding The Wire have me intrigued to maybe see that before its on DVD as well...Why you think its like The Wire? and what is/what else was good about it?

mostly due to lots of Wire alums in it, drugs, narcs, politics involved...eta: plot-wise....i think its more The Shield than the Wire....but it was great seeing some of the old Wire guys on screen again

i was entertained. gere/hawke/cheadle were good.

I thought it was a pretty horrible movie. I didn't read the graphic novel. bug that.

:goodposting: Cusack was great in Max. Interesting film.Midnight in da garden was almost unwatchable for me.I remember liking, not loving, Grifters when I saw it in the theaters and at this point have zero memory of it... which isn't a ringing endorsement.- Say Anything- BoB- HiFi- Malkovichand count me in the group that thinks Hot Tub Time Machine looks like it could be funny (or really, really horrible- don't see an inbetween there).

Trailers almost always show a film for what it is. And the Hot Tub trailer looks really good to me.

I noticed Wee-Bey was in it, but didnt realize anyone else was...nice

Last night I watched Capitalism: A Love Story.

Along with Sicko, he was trying to tackle the most important info that the general public needs to hear about and think about. However, what made Sicko work more for me was that he seemed to learn that people find him annoying, and for the most part he stepped away and let others do the talking. In this movie he seemed to revert back to the silliness and the movie suffered for it. All docs are still worth watching, so I'll still recommend it. It's worth it if it makes you think about something going on, want to read more about a topic, etc.. Just be forewarned that he reverts back to his annoying self more so than the previous movie. Also, I think by now we get the point that his hometown of Flint has had a rough time. No need to beat us over the head for 20 mins each movie about it - we get the message, now move on to another town.

Watched The Damned United last night. Best film I've seen all year. The fact that I'm a soccer fan probably helped that, though. Fascinating story about a fascinating coach.

ETA - (5/5)

Up in the Air

Pretty much what I expected from a Jason Reitman film, but this wasn't as good as Thank You For Smoking. Clooney is just a little too comfortable in a character we've seen him play many times before. Couldn't get into the character of the younger girl at all. Seemed like there should have been a little more "drama".

3.5/5

The Secret in Their Eyes - 4.1/5 - foreign Oscar winner. good story, nice payoff. still think Un Prophete was the superior Foreign nominee.

Ong Bak 2: The Beginning - If you like this style of movie, you owe it to yourself to see this. Tony Jaa is ridiculous and some of the fight sequences are just incredible. Story is pretty good, even if there is a bit of "been there seen that" to the storyline. Might be my favorite martial arts movie of all time.
quick...top 5 martial arts.

Dodgeball - this is an underrated comedy. especially Jason Bateman's performance
I actually dont even remember Bateman being in that, but its a good one....saw Starsky & Hutch again not too long ago, and it wasnt near as good as I remembered. Really only a few funny parts

The Prestige...

Is my #1 favorite movie of the past decade. Just watched it for perhaps the 12th time.

Closer...

#2 of the decade.

Almost Famous...

Though it loses its magic a little bit each time you see it.
