Swingers

Finally saw this movie, and didn't like it all that much. Vince Vaughn was great, there were some genuinely funny scenes, but the movie just felt terribly unrealistic.

Some background info on how Vaughn and Favreau became friends would have been nice, made no sense to me that Vaughn, Sue, and all those guys from LA would bother to be friends with Favreau who is completely different than all of them. I also find it hard to believe Favreau's character to be a comedian, guy shows absolutely no confidence throughout the film but he has little trouble making jokes in front of crowds? Not to mention his character says nothing (intentionally) funny the whole movie. Overall the amount of holes in the plot took away from the cool/comedic scenes in the movie for me.

well, he wasn't a successful comedian.

Those of you with HBO should check out the documentary Afghan Star. It's the Afghanistan version of American Idol but it's not really as much about the show as it is a look into Afghan society post-Taliban. Fascinating look into what's happening over there.

I use inetvideo.com to purchase a lot of DVDs. They usually have some amazing prices, if you dig around and look for them. They also have one of the most comprehensive selections I ahve ever seen.

On the downside- they are in Canada and shipping can get pretty pricey.

But thru 3/22 they are offering free shipping on orders of 50 dollars or more.

I found a lot of older/offbeat/interesting British and French miniseries and tv series.

My cart included:

Maybe seeing it more than a decade after everyone else meant the hype was too much. Personally, I think it means you need to turn in your man card.

Up In The Air - It was good. Not sure if I would give it any better then good. I don't know. I could somewhat relate to Cloony's character because I travel a lot for work. I could really related to the airport security scenes. I liked the young girls character... i thought the contrast between Cloony and the young girls character was interesting. tough to explain, but i just left the movie feeling empty... like nothing really happened. the whole 'your job is being replaced by computers' theme seems so overplayed to me it just came across as cliche.
Felt similarly. Good but not great. Felt like it didn't really have much to say beyond playing on current populist rage. Finally saw The Hangover tonight. Thought it was good, laughed a bunch. But the hype was probably too big going in....a bunch of people said it was better than Fletch, Caddyshack, or Real Genius. Not even close. I'd rather watch Wedding Crashers or Old School. Just didn't think Hangover was that clever - but again, it was good and I'm glad I watched it.

Thats sounds right on, thanks for ruining the movie for me by pointing things out that didnt originally bother me. :towelwave:

Of course delivery is expensive when youre shipping by dinosaur. (Im hilarious when im intoxicated) :towelwave:

Watched Boondock Saints the other day on IFC. Very interesting film and very enjoyable. Willem Dafoe is one of my all time favorite actors and he did not disappoint in this one. I'd give it 4 out of 5. :lmao:

Read My Lips

Spanish film (subtitled). Excellent thriller with great leads, a plausible story and intense filmmaking. THis is one of the better movies I have seen this year. Many reviewers compared it to Hitchcock. It really is rock solid and completely engaging. Its been out a few years and may be hard to locate, but certainly worth seeking out.

4.9/5 stars

Finally saw A Serious Man a few days ago. I loved this movie - I thought it was absolutely hilarious. If you're a huge Coen brothers fan like I am, don't miss this one.

The Korean kid was awesome.

I'm not sure if I'm just to old for the target demo (46) or the fact that Joseph Gordon-Levitt really was Nancy to Zooey Deschanel's Sid but I wasn't that impressed with (500) Days of Summer. The actors all did a good job, there are definately aspects of his life that I, and probably most people, could relate to. Interesting reality check at the end for him. It was good, but I had expected better with the many good reviews. 2.5/5

Vicky Cristina Barcelona

I wasn't sure if I'd like this, but this movie was quite enjoyable. Best Woody Allen movie in years. This is a good date movie, but it's a lot better than the fluff that Jennifer Aniston and Sandra Bullock normally star in. Javier Bardem, Scarlett Johansen, and Rebecca Hall are about as good looking a trio as you'll see in movies. Good stuff.

Took the kids to see "Diary of a Wimpy Kid".

Some funny moments.

Really made the lead kid to be a complete self absorbed #####. Couldn't stand the whiny little #####. Kid wasn't like that at all in the books.

Shutter Island- nice visuals of course, but sadly I knew the story in the first frame... exactly the same as Twinkle Twinkle Killer Kane, a movie I saw as a kid that I remember liking (Stacey Keach). Really liked Di Caprio in this along with Ruffalo. Even knowing the story, or at least the "story", I still enjoyed it.

The Fourth Kind

I really wanted to like this, but it was complete crap. Possibly the worst I've seen from 2009, and yes I've seen Paul Blart: Mall Cop. Nothing more annoying than the "real" scenes and the "re-inacted" scenes overlapping and echoing each other in dialogue. Probably the only time I've ever been tempted to turn my surround sound off.

I jumped a couple times, but it was just gimmicks that got me.

Junk, junk, junk.

I can't say I disliked it, although some of the visuals are very disturbing and the end reveal was hard to watch.

You must have bashed it earlier in the thread? Sorry I missed out on that. I hated Reality Bites when it came out. Not only is it pretentious but the whole thing is about Gen Xers rising above selling out to the "man", yet that's exactly what that movie did - Sell out to try and bait stupid Gen Xers into thinking it was deep and had meaning.

Exactly. The Chumscrubber was similar in that the movie is really high on itself.

kurosawa marathon on TCM tues 3-23 (starting EARLY - like 3:00 AM), runs about 24 hours...

includes less shown contemporary films (compared to seven samurai, rashomon & yojimbo... such as stray dog & drunken angel), & more notably, his first films (like shanshiro sugata), which were unavailable for many years & until recently, when criterion released them...

why? obviousness? lady's man? macho-energy? (why'd it have to be eddie?) (only need to answer the first two there)

I really enjoyed Chumscrubber, but I didn't get that vibe from it.I think I described it as a Donnie Darko/American Beauty/Alpha Dog mishmash. I could see how people would get that vibe from 2 of the three of those movies too.

I didn't care to write a lot about Reality Bites, although a bunch of us ripped it about 200 posts earlier in this thread. Here's what I said:
Wow. I'd never seen this before. I'm only half way through this movie, but what a bunch of pretentious nonsense. And all the pop culture references? It's like the writer was being sponsored by 1,000 corporations and needed to inject at least one product into the script every 60 seconds.

Chumscubber had some interesting bits, for sure. But its open content for the parental characters was unabashed pandering.

Sorry... lapsed into Barfly. Why was the end reveal hard to watch? ... oof. I think I know why.

Pirate Radio - Started out really slow. For the fist half hour or hour I was thinking... oh man... another dud. But it was an interesting setting, and the characters kept my attention. About half way through I started really liking it... and by the end I liked it even more. Looking back I think they were giving good character development in the first half and getting me 'invested' in the characters, something often lost in movies these days. Then they took that foundation and built on it.

As the plot moved further along it slowly built to the end and I really liked it. I'll tell you what, even if you don't like the movie it's difficult not to, at a minimum, enjoy the soundtrack and just wathing a re-creation of that era. I don't even particularly care for the music that came out of the 'British Invasion' but this movie made me appreciate the time / era much more. The retro styles the chicks wore were hot too.

It was unique, it was fun, it was an interesting (based on a true) story, good characters... I highly approve.

Watched Reign Of Fire over the weekend.

Never got around too watching it before now... and wish I could erase the "before now" from this sentence.

This movie was hideous... with three actors who have played great roles in movies that I've really enjoyed (Matthew McConahey(sp), Christian Bale, and Gerard Butler) I really thought that it would be enough to make it (at the very least) watch able. NOT EVEN CLOSE.

Giant fail on what seemed like a pretty cool idea for a script.

I watched this in theaters, and continue you to rent it every couple of years because I remember it being way better than it actually is.So I've been disappointed by this movie probably 4 or 5 times now.

The last time must have been before Butler's rise to fame because I don't remember him in it.

Saw Repo Men yesterday. Gave it 4 out of 5 stars. Would have had a better rating if it did not sag in the middle. And I did not see the twist at the end.

But loved what they did with the typewriter  and what the kid did to his mother

Peter, that was very naughty
 :lmao:

I remember enjoying this. But perhaps I was suffering from some kind of mental trauma at the time.

I thought it was good mindless fun. Bale was not very well known back then and Butler was yet to be really discovered. I too try to keep my expectations for movies like this low...they are much more enjoyable that way

I'm pretty sure I saw Pump up the Volume, but I don't remember it so I had to go back and read what it was about. I just read the plot on IMDB to remember. It looks to me like Pump up the Volume was quite dramatic. I guess Priate Radio is somewhat dramatic, but it is definitely much more fun then Pump up the Volume. Pirate Radio was more like the documentary of an awesome party on a boat. Pump up the Volume souns more like a drama about HS teens growing up and dealing with it. There wasn't really any serious drama that I can recall in Pirate Radio. The only real 'dramatic' plot line in Pirate Radio was very minimal, and was dealt with lightly. It was closer to a british Animal House out to sea then Pump up the Volume.

Just got done watching Brothers:

This movie might be the anti-Hurt Locker. Brothers is all about attempting to explore the damage left behind back home when a husband/father gets shipped to war and comes back. Predictable plot of Toby getting shipped out, shot down and presumed dead. Enter Jake (his brother) who's been in his shadow to fall for his wife and his family. Toby comes back after being tortured and broken down to commit a terrible act. Drama ensues. The ending was blah, but it packed enough emotional punch to tell others to give it a try. I think some of the characters were miscast, notably Portman, but overall the acting was decent. I dare anybody with kids not to be moved by the job the oldest daughter did.

While I accused Hurt Locker of being too much one way, I think this movie did too much with the emotional side and it seemed like they were trying to beat you over the head with the impact these people feel on their lives. Both movies were average, so it might be worth seeing another type of war movie if you dug the Hurt Locker.

I saw the original european version (swedish or norwegian I think) and it was very good, possibly more subtle than the US version. However it was so intense I really ahve no desire to watch the US adaptation.

Brothers

Agree with almost all of KP's review. Very emotional but the story isn't deep enough for it to ever be "great". Some great acting by McGuire and Jake G. Very believable as brothers. Not nearly as gritty as the European version. Portman has never looked better.

3/5

Men Who Stare At Goats

The way of the Jedi as taught by the church of Lebowski. Light fare that relies more on characters than plot. I'm not sure why this received such lukewarm reviews. It was exactly what I expected. Clooney doing what he does best. One of my top 5 of 2009.

4.5/5
