JCVD

Jean-Claude Van Damme plays himself in this fictional fantasy about a heist gone wrong. An odd movie, but mostly very entertaining. Van Damme gets lumped together with other meat head action stars such as Lundgren and Stallone. But I thought his acting in this movie was surprisingly good. Thumbs up.
I totally agree. I even found the sequence where they broke down the fourth wall to be well done. It is also possible that I enjoyed it more because I naturally had low expectations for a JCVD movie giving it a much lower bar to surpass to surprise me. Either way I can recommend this one without reservation.

Event Horizon' had a lot of promise(with me being a fan of Dead Space), and is entertaining enough to watch, but it's extremely unsatisfying and you'll end up wondering why the film-makers didn't spend more time working out a decent screenplay. It kinda of reminds me of 'Lost in Space ' or - it's a technical showcase, with absolutely no film beneath it.

2.5/5
i believe the studio stepped in and made some other choices for the director. supposedly, there is a much darker version out there.watched "before the devil knows your dead" last night. kind of a waste of talented actors. tomei is divine though.

Seeing PSH bang Tomei in the first scene makes the movie worth it. Not only is she in all her glory, but you got this fat slob pounding away at a good looking woman and its hilarious. Overall I did enjoy the movie though.

John Carpenter's The Thing.Love this movie. This is one of the few horror/sci-fi flicks to hold up well, being almost 3 decades old.The sets are very well made, creepy, and detailed. The explosions are fascinating. The shape-shifting alien parasite creature "the thing" has come to reality in this movie. Really enjoyed Kurt Russell's character a lot.
The Thing is a fantastic movie. This and Evil Dead are my favorite horror movies.

The movie received some very positive reviews from some respectable critics, and that's why I gave it a shot.

I liked the movie. Surprised to read you didn't care for it.
Thought it was an under the radar movie that was much better then expected. Considering the actors involved I assummed it was trash due to the lack of promotion. Pleasantly suprised. Plus anytime Marissa Tomei is naked it's worth watching.

Saw The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.

Very engrossing, well done movie.

It's the best movie I've seen in quite a while.
Cowgirl scene was pretty hot.Have read the books. Didn't think the Bloomkvist fit the profile from the book. The character in the book is a womanizer type and I just don't get that from the actor they chose.

RIP Sally Menke, Tarantino's editor on Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, Jackie Brown, Kill Bill, Death Proof, & Inglourious Basterds.
This sucks. Listening to the Raging Bull commentary with Scorsese and his long time editor Thelma Schoonmaker, that was the first time I really understood how important a good editor is.
I'd be really interested to understand more of what an editor does. Are they just following the directors notes or are they cutting based off of their judgement? Depending on how much influence they have the editor is really an underrated participant in the process. Especially in comedies.

Splinter (2008)

It's a small scale version of The Thing in a rural gas station instead of Antarctica. Very well directed with a claustrophobic style, doesn't rely on cgi which is another big plus in my book. Lacking in the plot and acting department but goes by fast enough to be able to enjoy the ride. More tension than gore but the characters are still pretty stupid for the most part.

Fanboys: 4 Star Wars fanatics set out to steal a copy of Episode 1 from Lucas' house before it is released because one of them has terminal cancer and won't be alive for the release. One of the better comdies I've seen lately... if you know your Star Wars and Star Trek. Lots of hilarious references and some great cameos by people like Shatner, Seth Rogan, Carrie Fisher, Jay and Silent Bob, Will Forte and Billy Dee Williams. Oh and Kristen Bell dressed up as Leia  . 4/5
Shocked this isn't getting more love. I thought this movie was great and I don't remember the last time I laughed so much while watching one.
 Best comedy of the year.Note: I haven't seen the Hangover.
Just watched this again last night. I think i found it in the Starz ON Demand section. Movie is just great and worthy of multiple viewings.I will note that I did watch The Hangover after seeing this too. Loved The Hangover and, pound for pound, probably a funnier movie. But that should take nothing away from the greatness that is Fanboys. Especially if you're a Star Wars :nerd:

People Under the Stairs

It's basically ghetto Goonies with a killer rottweiler, a pack of cannibals, and a shotgun wielding sado-masochist in a full bondage suit. Pretty creepy, but really all camp. Might be pretty fun to rewatch. Loved the ending.

One of my favorite movies of all time.

Funny Games: The original Austrian film from 1998, not the American remake of a few years ago. First of all, if you have kids, do not watch this movie. Second, if you don't have kids, you probably shouldn't watch it either. Squarely in the category of "great movies I'd never want to see again", this is right up there with Irreversible on the disturbing scale. The difference here is that not one iota of violence was shown on-screen, though somehow the director still made this probably the most terrifying movie I've ever seen. I've had nightmares for two nights straight after watching it. If you love a psychological horror film, see it, but you have been warned that you might be sorry you did. BONUS: The lead actor (father) is the same guy who was the lead in The Lives of Others. 4/5
I was surprised that I liked Funny Games U.S. much more than the original since I usually don't like remakes. Michael Pitt is fantastic in it.

Interesting. Naomi Watts and Tim Roth are pretty darn good actors, too. Maybe I'll have to watch that one and compare. :nightmares:

I too am disappointed that GBsaintfool didn't like BTDKYD, which I liked a lot.

Just a couple this week:

Sugar: This was a very entertaining and interesting depiction of what a baseball player in the Dominican Republic goes through to try to get first to the U.S. and then into the major leagues. Assuming what was depicted was somewhat accurate, I learned a lot about the baseball schools in the Caribbean and the grueling process of the minors. Kind of a sad movie. The lead was incredibly appealing and engaging. Definitely a must-see if you like baseball. 4/5

The Long Good Friday: Bob Hoskins' breakthrough role? A young Helen Mirren? Mob movie? Thought I'd have to love this but was just bored. :goodposting: 2/5

Saw the Ghost Writer... so what, was Polanski going for a Hitchcock parrot? Thought the writing was shameful, direction- decent, acting so-so, editing good (editing in particular reminded me of Hitchcock- there was a way they built a scene through editing to build suspsense that worked cinematically, even if the scene wasn't actually suspenseful). But the story and specifically the writing were just shambolic.

Could have been really good. But it wasn't.

Wolf

Never saw this movie before. Jack Nicholson, James Spader, and Michelle Pfiffer star in a goofy wolfman movie. Here's a movie that should be terrible. I loved it.

I liked the movie. Surprised to read you didn't care for it.
it just didn't work for me. script and how it was delivered. it was a labored effort on lumet's part.
I loved this movie. Thought Lumet did a very good job and the script was great, fantastic character development. Despite not liking it, surprised you'd call it a waste of talented actors. I thought this was hands down one of PSH's best performances, and for me his best. Finney and Tomei were also great. Hawke, Beadie, and Michael Shannon were all solid as usual.ETA: I think I actually put this #3 on my Best of 2000's list

Same here. It was free on Comcast on demand. This movie was a blast. And while Nicholson and Spader make the movie, I think the script is gold, Jerry, gold. Wolf has very little special effects, and the makeup is pretty weak. But the script is so good, you really get caught up in the story. Wolf succeeds because where most wolfman movies show the protagonist as instantly full of angst and regret, here the protagonist begins to enjoy his newfound powers.

I strongly disagree, and somewhere on here, once wrote a long essay on the many reasons why that film sucks major amounts of butt.

I probably need to watch it at least a couple more times to fully appreciate the camp. Have to admit that the stair creatures creeped me out a little more than they probably should have because it was my first viewing. Next time I'll be able to just laugh at the whole thing. What better way to end a horror film than a block party?

Love this film as well. The urinal scene was classic.

That scene goes to the heart of this film. The wry sense of humor really carries it.

hurt Locker - Absolutely loved this film.

Side question: Do casting people say hey these guys worked pretty good together before, so cast them again? Does one put in a word for the other?

The 2 leads (not renner) were in We Are Marshall together.

Watched The Road. Great performances by Viggo and the kid. Nice small roles by Robert Duvall and Omar from The Wire. Yeah, it was a bit slow but overall I really liked it. Some amazing cinematography, total desolation. 3.5/5

Cube -

Not much to like in this one. I hated all the characters and I didn't think what they were doing was particularly interesting.
The fact that they made such an entertaining movie on such a small budget is very much to like.
Diff'rent strokes/folks. I wasn't entertained in the slightest. If the characters had been the least bit likeable we might have had something. All you had was two screechy witches and two loser guys. I guess the fact that the handicapped kid is the only one that survives says something, but overall it wasn't worth the effort.Primer is how you do low budget and entertaining.

 although, I enjoyed Cube... but it was nowhere near the complete film Primer was.

I like Primer as well, but I think you're dismissing a good movie because you didn't like the characters. In the case of the black guy, I'm pretty sure you're not supposed to like him. But anywho, you're right. Different strokes for different folks.

I thought Wolf was terrible. They should have called it "Jackrabbit" the way Nicholson and Spader were jumping around.

Juice

Watched this for the first time last night. Tupac was a very natural actor. Love the climax scene to "Just Kill a Man" by Cypress Hill. Soundtrack rocked. Kind of weird how fast everything went downhill, but that's my only real beef for the 90 minute run time. Very realistic for the early 90's I would say.

i think that is ernie dickerson's directorial debut. dickerson is a fantastic cinematographer that worked with spike lee for years and years. he's one of the best with shot composition, i think. anyway, i had high hopes for "juice" but felt like it was just another story and not done especially well. yes, tupac is charismatic but the story is pretty tired. anyway, your post made me wonder what else ernie has done and imagine my surprise to see he's an accomplished tv director. he's done many, many episodes of some of my favorite shows like "the wire". i guess the shorter form suits his talents as a director.

Never heard of the guy but after watching Juice it's not surprising at all to me that he was involved with The Wire. I'll be on the lookout for his name from here on out, definitely dig his style.

I really enjoyed Never Die Alone. If anything, I found it to be an original and interesting angle of storytelling and narrative for a film that is probably best categorized as "gangsta noir"...DMX and David Arquette are surprisingly pretty good, Michael Ealy was very good, but I thought the story, cinematography, grit really overshadowed the acting anyway. Its rating isnt very good on IMDB and I got reamed on RT, but I think you'd like it quite a bit. Here's the summary from IMDB:A film noir centering around a hard-boiled, stylish kingpin drug dealer, called King David, who returns to his hometown seeking redemption--but ends up only finding violent death. King David's final moments are spent with Paul, an aspiring journalist who knew him for just a few minutes; yet King David would forever more have an impact on Paul's life. Half preacher, half Satan, and all street smarts, King David had recorded the story of his exploits on audiotape, leaving behind an often-poetic sermon on villainy and its consequences. The tapes reveal that the cycle of violence and retribution, which his actions have spawned, has come back to him, full circle, as he suspected they might all along.

Only 24 cents for a used copy on Amazon...Might just buy it :lmao:

Probably one of 12 people that saw this in theaters. Love DMX's presence in everything he does. It was decent. Also a big fan of Belly, another "gangsta noir".One, G. One.

Watching "Wall Street : Money Never Sleeps" just fall apart right in front of my eyes. Very tense second quarter followed by an informative third quarter, being followed by a fourth quarter that turns into every stupid con game movie that you've ever seen. I've never seen a movie fall so quickly. Kills the entire movie for me. Dreadful.

Funny People

I didn't know what to make of this movie. I suppose it's a dark comedy, but there was too much slap stick and stupid voices by Sandler to be dark.

The ex-girl friend plot line dragged on way to long. I liked Seth Rogan and Jonah Hill's characters but I didn't really feel bad for the George Simmons character.

The "Yo Teach" portions were random and didn't add to plot at all.

Overall, I think they could have cut a good half hour out. I would have liked to have seen less ex-GF and more interaction between Rogan and the girl he had a crush on.

2/5

Love this movie, have it on DVD and pop it in once in awhile for the DJ competition. Mike Tomlin was pretty solid too.

I'm sure it has been mentioned earlier in this thread, but I finally saw There Will Be Blood. meh. DDL's performance was awesome, and I enjoyed the dynamic between him and his fake brother, but other than that, I didn't really enjoy it too much. just kept waiting for something interesting to happen. I didn't really like Paul Dano in this, and the score was getting on my nerves. I don't think I've ever heard a movie score that grated on me so much. it didn't seem to be in harmony with the movie, but rather seemed like it was trying to compete with the visuals for my attention. I actually found the music quite unnerving. overall, I'd give it about a 6.5. I'm glad I finally saw it, but I will never have the desire to watch it again.

Its more of a drama with humor. I thought the length and plot were fine. Sandler was the main character, not Rogen, so I think going with his ex made more sense for that and other reasons. Plus, Leslie Mann > Rogen's nobody crush
